, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Karimi, Sajjad (Author) ; Shamsollahi, Mohammad Bagher (Supervisor) ; Molaee-Ardekani, Behnam (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
In this study Donepezil effect on the brain functional connectivity investigated. In order to construct the brain functional network, EEG artifacts must firstly be removed because this step has important effects on the final interpretation of the results. Therefor, a new artifact removing method is proposed and better performance of the proposed method compared to other existing methods is stated using quantitative evaluations. After artifact removal, the functional brain network is extracted using conventional methods that were applied in the similar previous studies. The reasons for using conventional methods are their simplicity and reliability. Furtheremore, to study the recent...

On the Behavior of Semi-Hinged Double-Angle Connections

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Esfahanian, Alireza (Author) ; Mofid, Masood (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, the semi-hinged connections such as double-angle connections, which are welded to the beam web and bolted to the column flange, are investigated. In this study it's tried to establish the effect of clearance setback between beam end and column flange and/or web. When the beam rotates, it is desirable to avoid the bottom flange of the beam bearing against the column as this can induce large forces in the connection. The usual way of achieving this is to ensure that the connection extends at least a few millimeters beyond the end of the beam. For this purpose, several connections are designed and considered, based on two different shear capacities for the beam. For each...

Investigation and Modeling of a New type of Semi-Rigid, Steel Beam-Column Connection under Monotonic Loading

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Taheri, Ehsan (Author) ; Mofid, Massoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This thesis presents the investigation and development of a Finite Element Model (FEM) for a new type of Beam-Column Semi-Rigid steel connection. One of the main parts of this connection is a steel T profile inserted on top of a beam connecting it to a column by bolts. It seems that changes in the geometry of the T profile and its bolt positions can have a great influence on the rigidity or flexibility of the connection. Therefore, meaningful categories of the T profile geometry with different bolt positions have been modeled and analyzed by means of a Finite Element Modeling software ABAQUS, and their moment-rotation curves were driven. Also the Initial and Nonlinear Stiffness and the...

Experimental Investigation into the Behaviour of a Semi-Rigid Connection in the Steel Moment-Resisting Frame under Fire

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rahdan, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Khonsari, Vahid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Fire is one of the permanent threats due to earthquakes, however in spite of the attention drawn towards design and retrofitting of structures in recent years in our country, no effective steps have been taken for examining design methods and control of the structures’ reactions in case of a fire. One of the reasons for this, is lack of observations and data and also lack of a standard for design of structures that are resistant to fire. Since the connections of beams and columns play an important role in performance of the structures, in this research the behavior of a structure having a semi-rigid connection to an end plate has been investigated by performing an experiment on a scaled...

Brain Connectivity Based on the MVAR Model and their Relationship to each other

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Abbaskhah, Ahmad (Author) ; Shamsollahi, Mohammad Bagher (Supervisor)
    Abstract
During the time that the simplest action (rest) of the human brain is active, and for integration and coordination of the brain, different parts of it are in connection with each other. This connection can be directional and directionless, which are called effective connectivity and functional connectivity, respectively. It is clear that effective connectivity shows brain function better than other connectivity due to its directionality. One of the most common ways to define effective connectivity is the use of the Multivariate Autoregressive (MVAR). The MVAR model provides the time Cause of different signals on each other, meaning that the influence of the past of a variable on other...

Analysis of a more realistic well representation during secondary recovery in 3-D continuum models

    , Article Computational Geosciences ; Volume 21, Issue 5-6 , 2017 , Pages 1035-1048 ; 14200597 (ISSN) Sadeghnejad, S ; Masihi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The effectiveness of secondary recovery methods in reservoir development studies depends on the knowledge about how fluid-carrying regions (i.e. good-quality rock types) are connected between injection and production wells. To estimate reservoir performance uncertainty, comprehensive simulations on many reservoir model realisations are necessary, which is very CPU consuming and time demanding. Alternatively, we can use much simpler and physically based methods such as percolation approach. Classic percolation assumes connectivity between opposite 2-D faces of a 3-D system; whereas, hydrocarbon production is achieved through active wells that are one-dimensional lines (e.g. vertical,...

Investigation of Strength and Ductility of Hinged Khorjini Connection

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hosseini, Sajjad (Author) ; Moghaddam, Hassan (Supervisor) ; Eskandari, Morteza (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Khorjini connection is a type of connection in steel frames, in which the beam remains continuous at the intersection with column. In its ordinary form, this beam is connected to the face of column section using upper and lower angles. This type of connection is frequently used in construction of steel frames in Iran due to economic advantages and ease of fabrication. However since it is rarely used in other countries, its behavior and method of design is not described in international references and standards. The failure of the connections is a dominant type of seismic fraction in a building (The main reason of structural failures in Manjil and Roudbar earthquake – 1990). Contrary to the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zahmatkesh, Farshad (Author) ; Kazemi, Mohammad Taghi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The main goal of this research is to evaluate the vertical and slant bolted endplate connections performance in steel moment frame structures under thermal effect in elastic range for two cases. In the first case, frictionless and in the second case slips with friction are considered. By finite element analysis, the connections are simulated to study the performance and verify simplified models of vertical and slant bolted endplate connections due to increase in temperature. The results of a vertical bolted endplate connection and a slant bolted endplate connection due to increase in temperature are compared the effect of slope of end plate reduction of axial force on beam is investigated....

    Abstract
This thesis presents the development of a Finite Element Model (FEM) for a new type of Beam-Column Semi-Rigid steel connection. This connection consists of a steel semi cylinder connected to a plate and inserted on the top and bottom of the beam connecting it to the column by welding. It seems that changing the geometry of the semi cylinders and their weld lengths can have a great influence on the rigidity or flexibility of the connection. Therefore, meaningful categories of the connection with different semi cylinder geometries and weld lengths have been modeled and investigated by means of a Finite Element Modeling software ABAQUS, and their moment-rotation curves were driven. , M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Moghadam, Amin (Author) ; Esmaeil Pourestekanch, Homayun (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Beam to column connections affect on the performance of the steel frames. Connections are assumed pin, semi rigid or rigid based on rigidity. Previously most steel structures designed as pin or rigid connections but lately many studies have been done on structures with semi rigid connections and these studies show that semi rigid connections have excellent properties that makes this connection a superior response such as less base shear, more economic, ability to absorb more energy and etc. In this study semi rigid connection with torsional plate has been studied. In addition to previous characteristics, this connection has special properties such as simple implementation, Dimension...

    Abstract
Sport video shot classification is a basic step in the sport video processing. For many purposes such as event detection and summarization, shot classification is needed for content filtering. In this paper, we present a new method for soccer video shot classification. At first, in-field and out-of-field frames are separated. In in-field frames three features based on number of connected components and shirt color percent in vertical and horizontal strips are extracted. The features are all new and showed excellent discrimination in the feature space. These features are given to SVM for classifying long, medium and close-up shots. One of the advantages of our method is that, close-ups can be...

A lower bound for algebraic connectivity based on the connection-graph- stability method

    , Article Linear Algebra and Its Applications ; Volume 435, Issue 1 , Sep , 2011 , Pages 186-192 ; 00243795 (ISSN) Ajdari Rad, A ; Jalili, M ; Hasler, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper introduces the connection-graph-stability method and uses it to establish a new lower bound on the algebraic connectivity of graphs (the second smallest eigenvalue of the Laplacian matrix of the graph) that is sharper than the previously published bounds. The connection-graph-stability score for each edge is defined as the sum of the lengths of the shortest paths making use of that edge. We prove that the algebraic connectivity of the graph is bounded below by the size of the graph divided by the maximum connection-graph-stability score assigned to the edges

    Abstract
Functional connectivity in human brain can be represented as a network using electroencephalography (EEG) signals. Network representation of EEG time series can be an efficient vehicle to understand the underlying mechanisms of brain function. Brain functional networks whose nodes are brain regions and edges correspond to functional links between them are characterized by neurobiologically meaningful graph theory metrics. This study investigates the degree to which graph theory metrics are sex dependent. To this end, EEGs from 24 healthy female subjects and 21 healthy male subjects were recorded in eyes-closed resting state conditions. The connectivity matrices were extracted using...

Effect of connectivity misrepresentation on accuracy of upscaled models in oil recovery by CO2 injection

    , Article Greenhouse Gases: Science and Technology ; Volume 6, Issue 3 , 2016 , Pages 339-351 ; 21523878 (ISSN) Ganjeh Ghazvini, M ; Masihi, M ; Baghalha, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
An upscaling method such as renormalization converts a detailed geological model to a coarse one. Although flow equations can be solved faster on a coarse model, its results have more errors. Numerical dispersion, heterogeneity loss, and connectivity misrepresentation are the factors responsible for errors. Connectivity has a great effect on the fluid distribution and leakage pathways in EOR processes or CO2 storage. This paper deals with the description and quantification of connectivity misrepresentation in the upscaling process. For detection of high-flow regions, the flow equations are solved under simplified single-phase conditions. These regions are recognized as the cells whose fluxes...

    , Article IEEE International Symposium on Industrial Electronics, 5 July 2009 through 8 July 2009 ; 2009 , Pages 1852-1857 ; 9781424443499 (ISBN) Hamzeh, M ; Mokhtari, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, the power quality of a single-phase photovoltaic grid connected inverter when uses active islanding detection methods is investigated. Two main groups of these methods are analyzed in this paper. The main focus is on the output power quality of PV sources for these methods. Also the variation of output current THD, while the output power changes, is explored. The variation of output current THD is measured when the parameters of active islanding detection method are changed, and the limitation of these parameters for complying power quality standards in the nominal output power is detected. ©2009 IEEE

Adding backlash to the connection elements can improve the performance of a robotic exoskeleton

    , Article Mechanism and Machine Theory ; Volume 152 , 2020 Shafiei, M ; Behzadipour, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
Kinematic mismatch between exoskeletons and human body results in excess internal forces/torques and hence discomfort as well as increase the power consumption. The connection stiffness has been shown to have potentials for minimizing the kinematic mismatch effects. However, realization of a desired stiffness in the connection element seems difficult if not impractical. In this work, adding controlled backlash to the exoskeleton-body connection is investigated as a possible solution for the kinematic mismatch challenge. A stiffness model which includes backlash parameters was formulated and identified experimentally using three male subjects on a typical lower extremity exoskeleton. A...

    Abstract
Existing design procedures for steel frames have been modified during the last three decades to incorporate the semi-rigid behavior of the connections into the frame design advancement. Knowledge in initial rotational stiffness of a connection is important for the global elastic analysis of frame structures. This paper presents the results of several parametric analyses on the Initial Rotational Stiffness (IRS or Sini) of Bolted Flush End-plate Beam (BFEB) splice connections using Finite Element Modeling (FEM). The FEMs have taken into account material behavior, geometrical discontinuities and large displacements. The analyses have been calibrated to experimental results that are also...
