    Optimal PID control of a nano-Newton CMOS-MEMS capacitive force sensor for biomedical applications

    Abstract
    This paper presents closed loop simulation of a CMOS-MEMS force sensor for biomedical applications employing an optimal proportional-integral-derivative controller. Since the dynamic behavior of the sensor under investigation is nonlinear the iterative feedback tuning approach was proposed for optimal gains tuning of the proposed controller. Simulation results presented in this research illustrate that the proposed controller suppresses the undesired in-plane vibration induced by environment or gripper 40 times faster than the nonlinear controller proposed in the literature.     Abstract
    This paper considers a closed-loop system consisting of a fractional/integer order system and a fractional PID controller. Assuming that the uncertain coefficients of the fractional PID controller lie in some known intervals independently (i.e. that controller is a member of an interval family), the paper presents some easy to use theorems to investigate the robust bounded-input bounded-output stability of the resultant closed-loop system. Moreover, a finite frequency bound required in drawing the related graphs has also been provided. Finally, some numerical examples are presented to illustrate the results

    Abstract
    Pre-compensators are used in multivariable control systems to reduce (or eliminate) open loop system interactions. Classical methods for the design of pre-compensator are traditionally based on static designs. Static pre-compensators are preferred for their simplicity, but are highly unsystematic in the amounts of achievable diagonal dominance. In many applications, only the more powerful dynamic pre-compensators are able to deliver the desired amounts of decoupling.     Fractional order PI and PID controllers are the most common fractional order controllers used in practice. In this paper, a simple analytical method is proposed for tuning the parameters of these controllers. The proposed method is useful in designing fractional order PI and PID controllers for control of complicated fractional order systems. To achieve the goal, at first a reduction technique is presented for approximating complicated fractional order models.     For a power transfer path, total transfer capability (TTC) represents maximum power that can be transferred over the transmission system. Unified power flow controller (UPFC) is a device that can be used to increase in TTC. This study presents a new method for optimal UPFC application to minimise power loss while enhancing TTC. Based on UPFC injection model, the solution region of UPFC parameters is first found using the proposed method to maximise TTC. It then searches the solution region to find optimal UPFC control mode and setting to minimise system power loss.     Abstract
    During the past decade, Electro-Hydraulic system has performed a significant role in industrial engineering as an actuator for high performance and precision positioning applications. In this case, many control methods have been developed for an electro-hydraulic actuated clutch. In this paper a Linear Quadratic Regulators (LQR) is proposed to trajectory control of a wet clutch actuated by a hydraulic servo valve mechanism. The idea behind the novel hydro magnetic micro-pump and flow controller is that ferromagnetic particles, mixed and dispersed in a carrier fluid, can be accumulated and retained at specific sites to form pistons in a micro-tube using some external magnetic field sources along the micro-tube.     Demand response (DR) and flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) devices can be effectively used for congestion management in power transmission systems.     This paper presents a single-phase phase-locked loop (PLL) system which is primarily free from the double-frequency ripples from which the conventional PLL system suffers. The proposed PLL is then extended to reject the harmonic components from the input signal and to estimate the phase-angle and frequency of the distorted input signal with no error. Three units of the proposed PLL can be used in three-phase power systems, such as FACTS and HVDC converters, to estimate the phase-angles of the individual phases with no double-frequency ripples and without sensitivity to the presence of harmonics and inter-harmonics.     An approximated quadratic programming algorithm is proposed to determine a model predictive controller, which is applied to the scheduling problem. We name the algorithm Sub-optimal Model Predictive Control Scheduler (SMPCS). The SMPCS prepares a platform to guarantee end to end proportional delay in DiffServ architecture. This paper investigates the complication of SMPCS and its implementation problems in high speed routers. In order to efficiently implement the controller we admit sub-optimal results against reduction in the complexity of the optimizer.     Fermentation systems are often highly nonlinear, with poorly understood dynamic behaviour of the reactor. In this work, mathematical modeling of the fermentation process based on aeration rate control was performed in a semi-batch airlift loop bioreactor. The bioconversion of glucose to gluconic acid by the Aspergillus niger strain was considered in an oxygen consuming system in the liquid phase.
