    Abstract
Dust deposition on the surface of solar systems is one of the main parameters that significantly affects the performance of such systems. In this study, the effect of dust deposition density on the performance of photovoltaic modules (PV) and photovoltaic-thermal systems (PVT) is numerically investigated. Accordingly, all layers of a monocrystalline silicon PV module for both systems are simulated. Moreover, the effect of various system parameters on the performance of both clean and dusty PV module and PVT system are studied. The studied parameters included: solar radiation intensity, ambient temperature, coolant inlet temperature, and coolant inlet velocity. The obtained results indicate...

    Abstract
In the current study, CuO nanoparticles were dispersed in a mixture of Ethylene Glycol-Water (60/40 wt. %) to prepare stable nanofluid in different concentrations (0.05 − 0.8 vol. %). The samples were used as the coolant fluid in a specific car radiator to evaluate the thermal performance of nanofluid and base fluid in the system. Five different and novel Machine-learning methods were applied over experimental data to predict the Nusselt number and output temperature of the coolant in the system. These methods are M5 tree regression, Linear and Cubic Multi-Variate Adaptive Regression Splines (MARS), Radial Basis Function (RBF), and Artificial Neural Network-Levenberg Marquardt Algorithm...

Optimization of a novel photovoltaic thermal module in series with a solar collector using Taguchi based grey relational analysis

    , Article Solar Energy ; Volume 215 , 2021 , Pages 492-507 ; 0038092X (ISSN) Kazemian, A ; Parcheforosh, A ; Salari, A ; Ma, T ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The solar collectors absorb solar irradiation and then produce thermal energy; however, they cannot generate electrical power. Electricity and thermal energy can be produced by the photovoltaic thermal module, simultaneously, while the outlet temperature of the photovoltaic thermal module is not usually high enough to provide thermal requirements of a building such as hot water or space heating. This work proposes a novel compound system created by the connection of a solar collector in series with a photovoltaic thermal module to resolve the issue of low outlet temperature in the photovoltaic thermal module and lack of electrical power in solar collectors. To examine the feasibility of this...

    Abstract
The effect of the hybrid suspension on the intrinsic characteristics of microencapsulated phase change material (MEPCM) slurry used as a coolant in counterflow microchannel heat exchanger (CFMCHE) with different velocities is investigated numerically. The working fluid used in this paper is a hybrid suspension consisting of nanoparticles and MEPCM particles, in which the particles are suspended in pure water as a base fluid. Two types of hybrid suspension are used (Al2O3 +MEPCM and Cu + MEPCM), and the hydrodynamic and thermal characteristics of these suspensions flowing in a CFMCHE are numerically investigated. The results indicated that using hybrid suspension with high flow velocities...

Jet into cross flow boundary layer control an innovation in gas turbine blade cooling

    , Article 35th AIAA Fluid Dynamics Conference and Exhibit, Toronto, ON, 6 June 2005 through 9 June 2005 ; 2005 ; 9781624100598 (ISBN) Javadi, K ; Taeibi Rahni, M ; Darbandi, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
New standpoint of turbulent coolant jets into crossflow, which have numerous applications in traditional and modern technology, especially in gas turbine blades, is presented in this work. It is more than half a century that, many researchers have been studying jet into cross flow to understand its behavior and to predict and control it better. Previous studies indicate that, the main attentions had been on: a- geometrical parameters such as: inclined and compound jet angles, hole's shape, jet's array arrangements, jet's spacing, and jet's channel depth, b- flow characteristics like: blowing ratio, density ratio, jet and cross flow Reynolds numbers, and turbulence intensity. Here, we have...

Imposed magnetic field impact on vortex generation in the laminar nanofluid flow: A computational approach

    Abstract
Metal manufacturing plants, nuclear power plants (which produce steam, by using thermal energy yielded during the nuclear fission, for spinning enormous turbines to generate electricity), and geothermal power plants are a few in the extensive list of technologies where different processes occur in high temperature environment in the presence of strong magnetic fields. Nanofluids (NFs), on the other hand, have been successful in achieving wide acceptance as the next generation coolant in the above mentioned industries as well as in the automobiles, heat exchangers, and steam boilers, owing to their remarkable thermal performance. These observations motivate the authors to explore the change...

Computational analysis of nanofluid effects on convective heat transfer enhancement of micro-pin-fin heat sinks

    Abstract
Numerical investigation on the application of nanofluids in Micro-Pin-Fin Heat Sinks (MPFHSs) has been presented in this paper. To investigate flow and heat transfer behavior in MPFHS the three-dimensional steady Navier-Stokes and energy equations were discretized using a finite volume approach and have been solved iteratively, using the SIMPLE algorithm. DI-water is used as a base coolant fluid while the nanoparticles used in the present study are CuO nanoparticles with mean diameters of 28.6 and 29 nm and Al 2O 3 nanoparticles with mean diameters of 38.4 and 47 nm. The results show that (i) a significant enhancement of heat transfer in the MPFHS due to suspension of CuO orAl 2O 3...

New turbulence modeling for simulation of Direct Contact Condensation in two-phase pressurized thermal shock

    , Article Progress in Nuclear Energy ; Volume 108 , 2018 , Pages 358-371 ; 01491970 (ISSN) Ghafari, M ; Ghofrani, M. B ; D'Auria, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Injection of Emergency Core Cooling System (ECCS) water into the primary loops of the Pressurized Water Reactors (PWRs) leads to rapid cooling of Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV) inside wall after Loss Of Coolant Accident (LOCA). This condition, known as Pressurized Thermal Shock (PTS) intensifies the propagation of the RPV structural defects and would be considered as an ageing mechanism. For structural and fracture analysis of RPV wall, thermal-hydraulic analysis of PTS should be accomplished to obtain the steam/water flow characteristics in the downcomer. For this purpose, simulation of steam/water stratified flow (due to density difference) after the injection point should be done by...
