, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Najafi Farashah, Mohammad Hadi (Author) ; Shadrokh, Shahram (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this research a mathematical formulation is presented for project scheduling problem subject to non-renewable perishable resources where the objective is minimize the cost of ordering and maintenance of resources. We use the framework of a resource constrained project scheduling problem (RCPSP) with finish-start precedence relations between activities and resources will be perished after a determined duration and must be procured. Resource procurement have ordering and purchasing costs and excess resources must be stored and have maintenance cost. There is a unique way to perform the activities and preemption is not allowed.
This work employs Genetics Algorithms to solve the problem...

    Abstract
For a simple polygon P of size n, we define weak visibility counting problem (WVCP) as finding the number of visible segments of P from a query line segment pq. We present different algorithms to compute WVCP in sub-linear time. In our first algorithm, we spend O(n7) time to preprocess the polygon and build a data structure of size O(n6), so that we can optimally answer WVCP in O(logn) time. Then, we reduce the preprocessing costs to O(n4+ε) time and space at the expense of more query time of O(log5n). We also obtain a trade-off between preprocessing and query time costs. Finally, we propose an approximation method to reduce the preprocessing costs to O(n2) time and space and O(n1/2+ε) query...

    Abstract
Nowadays, software product line is an approach to reduce costs of software development, decrease time to market, and increase capabilities of reuse in designing and exploiting software development processes. Moreover, other quality attributes of the project domain should be considered to enhance quality of the product. Meanwhile, taking advantage of software product line makes developers capable of estimating development costs and time to market in a more realistic way. However, old approaches to estimate cost of development and foresee time to market are not suitable enough for software product line. In this paper, some important business parameters and a way to calculate cost and time to...

    Abstract
Demand response (DR) and flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) devices can be effectively used for congestion management in power transmission systems. However, demand response program (DRP) implementation can itself affect the optimum location of FACTS devices, which is one of the main issues in power system planning. This paper investigates the impact of DRPs on unified power flow controller (UPFC) placement. The harmony search algorithm is employed to determine the optimum locations and parameter setting of UPFC in a long-term framework. The optimization problem is solved with different objectives including generation and congestion cost reduction, as well as loss reduction. In this...

    Abstract
This paper discusses a technical comparison of a directexpansion ground-source heat pump (DX-GSHP) and an airsource heat pump (ASHP). To lower the ground heat exchanger size for cost reduction purposes, the system performance of a hybrid system is also evaluated using a supplementary air evaporator combined with the DX-GSHP. Detailed screening models previously developed for ASHPs and DX-GHSPs are first used to compare the seasonal performance of these two options for a residential building in the cold-climate city of Montreal, Canada. Then, the model is adopted for performance evaluation of the hybrid system. Additionally, different parameters including borehole total length and heat pump...

    Abstract
Hybrid Multi-Level Cache Architectures (HCAs) are promising solutions for the growing need of high-performance and cost-efficient data storage systems. HCAs employ a high endurable memory as the first-level cache and a Solid-State Drive (SSD) as the second-level cache. Spin-Transfer Torque Magnetic RAM (STT-MRAM) is one of the most promising candidates for the first-level cache of HCAs because of its high endurance and DRAM-comparable performance along with non-volatility. However, STT-MRAM faces with three major reliability challenges named Read Disturbance, Write Failure, and Retention Failure. To provide a reliable HCA, the reliability challenges of STT-MRAM should be carefully addressed....

SMART: a scalable mapping and routing technique for power-gating in NoC routers

    , Article 2017 11th IEEE/ACM International Symposium on Networks-on-Chip, NOCS 2017, 19 October 2017 through 20 October 2017 ; 2017 ; 9781450349840 (ISBN) Farrokhbakht, H ; Kamali, H. M ; Hessabi, S
    Abstract
Reducing the size of the technology increases leakage power in Network-on-Chip (NoC) routers drastically. Power-gating, particularly in NoC routers, is one of the most efficient approaches for alleviating the leakage power. Although applying power-gating techniques alleviates NoC power consumption due to high proportion of idleness in NoC routers, since the timing behavior of packets is irregular, even in low injection rates, performance overhead in power-gated routers is significant. In this paper, we present SMART, a Scalable Mapping And Routing Technique, with virtually no area overhead on the network. It improves the irregularity of the timing behavior of packets in order to mitigate...

    Abstract
Motion estimation (ME) is one of the key parts of video compression algorithms. But, motion estimation and computation of motion vectors (MVs) are very time con-suming. In this paper, we propose a method for reducing the cost of motion estimation process. During this process, a series of candidate blocks should be searched to find the best motion vectors. In our method, we compare the skin parts of two blocks before comparing all pixel pairs of the two blocks. Having a preprocessing phase, the skin part comparison is performed quickly. This method provides a parameter that can be used to create a balance between the processing time and the motion estimation accuracy. © 2009 IEEE

    Abstract
By increasing the penetration level of the combined heat and power systems and demand response programs between energy consumers in the distribution network, the interaction between electricity and the natural gas network becomes more complicated. This paper proposes a peer-to-peer (P2P) energy sharing scheme for energy trading among Smart Energy Hubs (S.E. Hubs) which can trade both electrical and thermal energy with each other to reduce their cost and, reduce their dependency to gas and electricity utility companies. A two-stage energy strategy is presented. In the first stage, the S.E. Hubs total social cost is reduced by finding the optimal energy sharing profiles. And, in the second...

    Abstract
Sectionalizing switches are the main components of any restoration scheme in fault situations of power distribution systems. In this paper, customer outage costs reduction is aimed through the optimal simultaneous placement of manual and remote-controlled switches (RCSs). Network reconfigurations are constrained such that operational considerations like statutory ranges for voltage levels, lines' thermal capacities, and necessity of radial configuration be conserved. Total cost reduction is mathematically modeled in a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model that makes the global optimal solution accessible. The validity of the proposed model is evaluated on the IEEE 33-bus network. In...

    Abstract
An energy management system (EMS) was proposed for a campus microgrid (μG) with the incorporation of renewable energy resources to reduce the operational expenses and costs. Many uncertainties have created problems for microgrids that limit the generation of photovoltaics, causing an upsurge in the energy market prices, where regulating the voltage or frequency is a challenging task among several microgrid systems, and in the present era, it is an extremely important research area. This type of difficulty may be mitigated in the distribution system by utilizing the optimal demand response (DR) planning strategy and a distributed generator (DG). The goal of this article was to present a...
