Parallel nonlinear analysis of weighted brain's gray and white matter images for Alzheimer's dementia diagnosis

, Article Conference proceedings : ... Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society. IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society. Conference ; 2010 , Pages 5573-5576 ; 1557170X (ISSN) Razavian, S. M ; Torabi, M ; Kim, K ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
In this study, we are proposing a novel nonlinear classification approach to discriminate between Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and a control group using T1-weighted and T2-weighted Magnetic Resonance Images (MRI's) of brain. Since T1-weighted images and T2-weighted images have inherent physical differences, obviously each of them has its own particular medical data and hence, we extracted some specific features from each. Then the variations of the relevant eigenvalues of the extracted features were tracked to pick up the most informative ones. The final features were assigned to two parallel systems to be nonlinearly categorized. Considering the fact that AD defects the white and gray regions...

Assessment of modal transportation sustainability: Application of data envelopment and concordance analyses

    , Article Iranian Journal of Science and Technology, Transaction B: Engineering ; Volume 31, Issue 2 , 2007 , Pages 179-193 ; 03601307 (ISSN) Rassafi, A. A ; Vaziri, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
This study tries to characterize national transportation modes to assess balancing and sustainability. Using a pioneer measure for sustainable development (SD), and based on the conformity of the growths of all sectors with transportation modes, the countries are comparatively studied. The proposed measure, elasticity, for each pair of variables indicates the extent to which the two variables have been changing consistently. Indeed the elasticity values are measures of "harmonic development" reflecting sustainability. The study database consisted of key aspects of transportation sustainability in the form of national variables including transportation, economic, social and environmental...

Sustainable transport indicators: Definition and integration

    , Article International Journal of Environmental Science and Technology ; Volume 2, Issue 1 , 2005 , Pages 83-96 ; 17351472 (ISSN) Rassafi, A. A ; Vaziri, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, a different interpretation of sustainable transportation, is introduced, in which sustainability with respect to transportation sector for the selected countries is evaluated. This interpretation characterizes "sustainable development" through "harmonic development". It means sustainable development with special focus on transportation can be measured by the degree of conformity between environment, economy, and social aspects on one hand, and transportation on the other hand. The best indicator to perform such a measurement is elasticity. The database used for the study encompasses a series of national indicators for each country Seventy nine countries were initially selected...

RIAL: Redundancy reducing inlining algorithm to map XML DTD to relations

    , Article 2008 International Conference on Computational Intelligence for Modelling Control and Automation, CIMCA 2008, Vienna, 10 December 2008 through 12 December 2008 ; July , 2008 , Pages 25-30 ; 9780769535142 (ISBN) Rafsanjani, A. Abstract
XML has emerged as a common standard for data exchange over the World Wide Web. One way to manage XML data is to use the power of relational databases for storing and querying them. So the hierarchical XML data should be mapped into flat relational structure. In this paper we propose an algorithm which maps DTD to relational schema and as well as content and structure it preserves the functional dependencies during the mapping process in order to produce relations with less redundancy. This is done by categorizing functional dependencies and introducing four rules to be applied to the relations created by the hybrid inlining algorithm according to each category. These rules will reduce...

Private set operations over encrypted cloud dataset and applications

    , Article Computer Journal ; Volume 64, Issue 8 , 2021 , Pages 1145-1162 ; 00104620 (ISSN) Rafiee, M ; Khazaei, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
We introduce the notion of private set operations (PSO) as a symmetric-key primitive in the cloud scenario, where a client securely outsources his dataset to a cloud service provider and later privately issues queries in the form of common set operations. We define a syntax and security notion for PSO and propose a general construction that satisfies it. There are two main ingredients to our PSO scheme: an adjustable join (Adjoin) scheme (MIT-CSAIL-TR-2012-006 (2012) Cryptographic treatment of CryptDB's adjustable join. http://people.csail.mit.edu/nickolai/papers/popa-join-tr.pdf) and a tuple set (TSet) scheme (Cash, D., Jarecki, S., Jutla, C. Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2021
    Abstract
Database management systems (DBMS) are one of cloud services with major applications in industry and business. In the use of such services, since the cloud service provider cannot be entrusted with the plain data, the databases are typically encrypted prior to outsourcing. One of the most challenging issues in designing these services is supporting SQL join queries on the encrypted database. The multi-adjustable join scheme (M-Adjoin) [Khazaei-Rafiee 2020], an extension of Adjoin [Popa-Zeldovich 2012 and Mironov-Segev-Shahaf 2017], is a symmetric-key primitive that supports the join queries for a list of column labels on an encrypted database. In previous works, the following security...

    Abstract
Software architecture patterns present solutions for software architecture problems and help to document architectural design decisions. Complexity and variability of patterns, and the required expertise for selecting an appropriate pattern, would cause some difficulties in utilizing architectural patterns. Using an ontology for registering architectural patterns is an efficient step in solving those problems. However, the mentioned difficulties make the process of constructing the architectural patterns ontology even more complicated. This paper proposes an approach that considers the construction of the architectural patterns ontology from four perspectives in order to overcome this...

Semi-supervised parallel shared encoders for speech emotion recognition

    , Article Digital Signal Processing: A Review Journal ; Volume 118 , 2021 ; 10512004 (ISSN) Pourebrahim, Y ; Razzazi, F ; Sameti, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Inc  2021
    Abstract
Supervised speech emotion recognition requires a large number of labeled samples that limit its use in practice. Due to easy access to unlabeled samples, a new semi-supervised method based on auto-encoders is proposed in this paper for speech emotion recognition. The proposed method performed the classification operation by extracting the information contained in unlabeled samples and combining it with the information in labeled samples. In addition, it employed maximum mean discrepancy cost function to reduce the distribution difference when the labeled and unlabeled samples were gathered from different datasets. Experimental results obtained on different emotional speech datasets...

    Abstract
The joint analysis of multiple data sets to extract their interdependency information has wide applications in biomedical and health informatics. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to extract joint and individual sources of multisubject data sets by using a deflation-based procedure, which is referred to as joint/individual thin independent component analysis (JI-ThICA). The proposed algorithm is based on two cost functions utilizing higher order cumulants to extract joint and individual sources. Joint sources are discriminated by fusing signals of all subjects, whereas individual sources are extracted separately for each subject. Furthermore, JI-ThICA algorithm estimates the number of...

An access and inference control model for time series databases

    , Article Future Generation Computer Systems ; Volume 92 , 2019 , Pages 93-108 ; 0167739X (ISSN) Noury, A ; Amini, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2019
    Abstract
Today, many applications produce and use time series data. The data of this type may contain sensitive information. So they should be protected against unauthorized accesses. In this paper, security issues of time series data are identified and an access and inference control model for satisfying the identified security requirements is proposed. Using this model, administrators can define authorization rules based on various time-based granularities (e.g. day or month) and apply value-based constraints over the accessed times series data. Furthermore, they can define policy rules over the composition of multiple time-series other than the base time-series data. Detecting and resolving...

A new framework based on recurrence quantification analysis for epileptic seizure detection

    , Article IEEE Journal of Biomedical and Health Informatics ; Volume 17, Issue 3 , 2013 , Pages 572-578 ; 21682194 (ISSN) Niknazar, M ; Mousavi, S. R ; Vosoughi Vahdat, B ; Sayyah, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
This study presents applying recurrence quantification analysis (RQA) on EEG recordings and their subbands: delta, theta, alpha, beta, and gamma for epileptic seizure detection. RQA is adopted since it does not require assumptions about stationarity, length of signal, and noise. The decomposition of the original EEG into its five constituent subbands helps better identification of the dynamical system of EEG signal. This leads to better classification of the database into three groups: Healthy subjects, epileptic subjects during a seizure-free interval (Interictal) and epileptic subjects during a seizure course (Ictal). The proposed algorithm is applied to an epileptic EEG dataset provided...

A unified approach for detection of induced epileptic seizures in rats using ECoG signals

    , Article Epilepsy and Behavior ; Volume 27, Issue 2 , 2013 , Pages 355-364 ; 15255050 (ISSN) Niknazar, M ; Mousavi, S. R ; Motaghi, S ; Dehghani, A ; Vosoughi Vahdat, B ; Shamsollahi, M. B ; Sayyah, M ; Noorbakhsh, S. M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Objective: Epileptic seizure detection is a key step for epilepsy assessment. In this work, using the pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) model, seizures were induced in rats, and ECoG signals in interictal, preictal, ictal, and postictal periods were recorded. The recorded ECoG signals were then analyzed to detect epileptic seizures in the epileptic rats. Methods: Two different approaches were considered in this work: thresholding and classification. In the thresholding approach, a feature is calculated in consecutive windows, and the resulted index is tracked over time and compared with a threshold. The moment the index crosses the threshold is considered as the moment of seizure onset. In the...

    Abstract
This paper introduces a large-scale, validated database for Persian called Sharif Emotional Speech Database (ShEMO). The database includes 3000 semi-natural utterances, equivalent to 3 h and 25 min of speech data extracted from online radio plays. The ShEMO covers speech samples of 87 native-Persian speakers for five basic emotions including anger, fear, happiness, sadness and surprise, as well as neutral state. Twelve annotators label the underlying emotional state of utterances and majority voting is used to decide on the final labels. According to the kappa measure, the inter-annotator agreement is 64% which is interpreted as “substantial agreement”. We also present benchmark results...

Syllable duration prediction for Farsi text-to-speech systems

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 11, Issue 3 , 2004 , Pages 225-233 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Nazari, B ; Nayebi, K ; Sheikhzadeh, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, two different statistical approaches are used for duration prediction of the Farsi language. These two statistical models are Neural Networks (NN) and Classification And Regression Trees (CART). The first step in this work was to create a database and develop a flexible feature extraction and selection module. In the next step, the output of the feature selection module was used to train both models. The results of the trained models are further studied to determine the most important parameters affecting the syllable duration in Farsi, The model accuracy is evaluated by using separate training and test data. In the third step of this work, ah automatic rule generator module...

    Abstract
A signaling pathway is a sequence of proteins and passenger molecules that transmits information from the cell surface to target molecules. Understanding signal transduction process requires detailed description of the involved pathways. Several methods and tools resolved this problem by incorporating genomic and proteomic data. However, the difficulty of obtaining prior knowledge of complex signaling networks limited the applicability of these tools. In this study, based on the simulation of signal flow in signaling network, we introduce a method for determining dominant pathways and signal response to stimulations. The model uses topology-weighted transit compartment approach and comprises...
