Evaluation of dike-type causeway impacts on the flow and salinity regimes in Urmia Lake, Iran

    , Article Journal of Great Lakes Research ; Volume 35, Issue 1 , 2009 , Pages 13-22 ; 03801330 (ISSN) Zeinoddini, M ; Tofighi, M. A ; Vafaee, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
Urmia Lake, located in a closed basin in north-west Iran, is the largest lake (5000-6000 km2) in the Middle East. It is very saline with total dissolved salts reaching 200 g/l compared with a normal seawater salinity of about 35 g/l. The construction of a causeway, which was initiated in 1979 but then abandoned until the early 2000s, is near completion and will provide road access between the western and eastern provinces. The causeway has an opening 1.25 km long and divides Urmia Lake into a northern and southern basin and restricts water exchange. The flow and salinity regimes are affected by the presence of this new causeway, and there are concerns over the well being of the Artemia...

Kinetics of platinum extraction from spent reforming catalysts in aqua-regia solutions

    , Article Hydrometallurgy ; Volume 95, Issue 3-4 , 2009 , Pages 247-253 ; 0304386X (ISSN) Baghalha, M ; Khosravian Gh., H ; Mortaheb, H. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
Platinum content of two commercial spent reforming catalysts were extracted in aqua-regia solutions under atmospheric pressure and at temperatures up to 100 °C. Three factors, including presence of coke, catalyst particle size, and impeller agitation speed were first tested to study the relative importance of mass-transfer resistances during Pt extraction reaction. Catalyst particle sizes < 100 μm and agitation speeds > 700 rpm eliminated the internal and external mass-transfer resistances, respectively. The effect of other factors, including HNO3-to-HCl volume ratio, liquid-to-solid mass ratio, and the reaction temperature on the extraction rate of platinum were then examined. Pt extraction...

Synthesis and properties of novel fluorinated polyamides based on noncoplanar sulfoxide containing aromatic bis(ether amine)

    , Article Polymer Journal ; Volume 41, Issue 3 , 2009 , Pages 174-180 ; 00323896 (ISSN) Shockravi, A ; Abouzari Lotf, E ; Javadi, A ; Taheri, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
A novel sulfoxide containing bis(ether amine) monomer, 2,2'-sulfoxide- bis[4-methyl(2-trifluoromethyl)4-aminophenoxy) phenyl ether] (M2), was synthesized from the halogen displacement of 2-chloro-5-nitrobenzotrifluoride with dibenzosulfoxide (DH) in the presence of potassium carbonate, followed by catalytic reduction of bis(ether nitro) intermediate with Zinc/Ammonium chloride. A series of organic-soluble poly(ether amide)s (PA1-7) bearing sulfoxide and electronwithdrawing trifiuoromethyl group were synthesized from bis(ether amine) with various aromatic diacids (1-7) via a direct polycondensation with triphenyl phosphite and pyridine. The resulting polymers had inherent viscosities ranging...

Mechanical induced reaction in Al-CuO system for in-situ fabrication of Al based nanocomposites

    , Article Journal of Alloys and Compounds ; Volume 465, Issue 1-2 , 2008 , Pages 151-156 ; 09258388 (ISSN) Arami, H ; Simchi, A ; Seyed Reihani, S. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
Gradual chemical (displacement) reaction between CuO and Al powders during high-energy attrition milling under a high purity argon atmosphere was studied. Differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques were employed to study the solid-state reaction. It was shown that the solid-state reaction occurred during mechanical alloying (MA) and resulted in the dissolution of copper into the aluminum lattice and formation of nanometric alumina particles. The reinforcement particles were mostly distributed at the grain boundaries of Al matrix with an average crystallite size of about 50 nm. In DTA curve of the milled powders, a small...
