, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Pourghaderi, Niloofar (Author) ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, Mahmud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Virtual power plant (VPP) aggregates the capacity of many diverse distributed energy resources (DERs); it creates a single operating profile from a composite of the parameters characterizing each DER and can incorporate the impact of the network on aggregated DER output. In modern power systems, technical virtual power plants (TVPPs) play an important role enabling presence of DERs in electricity markets. This thesis addresses the optimal bidding strategy problem of a TVPP that participates in the day-ahead (DA) electricity market. TVPP schedules its energy resources in a manner that maximize its profit in DA market. Hence, the optimal schedule of its resources is achieved. In a proposed...

Integrated Control and Power Sharing of Distributed Generators in Islanded and Grid-Connected Microgrids

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nokhbehzaeem, Javad (Author) ; Parniani, Mostafa (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Distributed generation (DG) technologies have achieved an intense progress during the last years. One of the appropriate ways to enter a DG system in the electrical network is through the use of microgrids. Because the majority of DG units are connected to the grid with power electronic converters, specific control strategies have been developed for these converters. Control strategies of DGs in microgrid differ in the grid-connected and the islanded states of operation. Changing the control modes from one state to another requires a reliable islanding detection method, and results in unwanted transients. It is, therefore, desirable to devise an integrated control approach for both states....

Distribution Expansion Planning Considering Energy Storage and Demand Response

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology DavoodiZad, Sadegh (Author) ; Ehsan, Mahdi (Supervisor)

    Geometric-Based Fault Diagnosis in a Grid-Connected Inverter

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Mashreghi, Ali (Author) ; Namvar, Mehrzad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Inverters are the main utility in transmitting power from distributed generation (DG) systems toward grid and their safe and immune performance has become a major concern among the system designers. In addition to poor power transmittance, faults in inverter can harm other equipment such as DG and local load. Consequently different protections has been considered to increase the reliability of these systems. Some of these protections like fuses and varistors are implemented in the hardware while others are considered in the processor. In the later class of protections, fault detection and isolation (FDI) system has been the subject of intense investigation in inverters over the past two...

Developing an Efficient Approach for Improving Operational Resilience of Power Distribution Network in Facing with Earthquake

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Amani Jouneghani, Farshad (Author) ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, Mahmud (Supervisor)
    Abstract

The design and operation of energy systems infrastructure is typically based on key reliability criteria such as system security and adequacy. Nowaday, with the rise of unexpected events and events such as floods, earthquakes, storms, and other natural phenomena can affect the performance of energy infrastructure. Given the low probability of these events, reliability studies and relevant criteria cannot guarantee that an energy infrastructure can respond well to these events. Investigating the ability of energy infrastructures to deal with these phenomena is divided into resilience studies. To overcome these challenges, this thesis has attempted to detail some of these natural events....

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mohammad Yari, Mohammad (Author) ; Hosseini, Hamid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Natural disasters such as storms, earthquakes, floods, etc. are among the factors that can damage the elements of the power grid and cause them to leave the grid. The result of these outages will be a widespread power outage, which will create many economic and social problems. Therefore, in recent years, the concept of resiliencey has been introduced in power system studies, which examines the extensive outputs in the network as a result of natural disasters. One way to improve the power system resiliency is to strengthen the network by upgrading existing equipment, installing new equipment, and modifying the operation of the network. Among these, the installation of distributed generation...

    Abstract
Nowadays, moving toward new technologies and smart grids is a successful way to prevail over distribution system challenges. In the presence of smart grids, demand-side management (DSM) is capable to affect the expansion of network resources. An effective DSM tool is demand response (DR). In this thesis, distribution system planning (DSP) considering DR is presented and the effects of DR on DSP are investigated. This thesis proposes direct load control (DLC) DR which is an incentive-based program (IBP) where a utility offers financial incentives to the customers to control their consumption through installing smart meters and switches. The utility deploys the DR program to reduce network...

Electrical Distribution System Planning in Multi-Microgrid Framework

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zare Bahramabadi, Majid (Author) ; Ehsan, Mehdi (Supervisor) ; Farzin, Hossein (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Remote-controlled switches (RCSs) have the ability to quickly isolate the faulted area from other parts of distribution systems. On the other hand, the distributed generation resources (DGs) and tie lines can supply the interrupted loads after fault occurrence as a microgrid. In this regard, this thesis proposes a planning model for simultaneous placement of RCSs, DGs, and tie lines in distribution systems with complex topologies to improve their reliability and resiliency. Presence of renewable DGs (RDGs) including photovoltaic cells (PVs) and wind turbines (WTs), as well as the uncertainties of loads, RDGs, and outage duration of the faulted areas are also considered in the proposed...

Electricity Distribution System Planning Considering Incentive Reliability Regulations

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Jooshaki, Mohammad (Author) ; Abbaspour Tehranifard, Ali (Supervisor) ; Lehtonen, Matti (Co-Supervisor) ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, Mahmoud (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Electricity distribution systems are dynamically expanded in anticipation of new demands. Cost and reliability are the most important factors in finding the optimal plans for network expansion. Recently, implementation of incentive reliability regulations has accentuated the role of reliability considerations in distribution systems studies. This is because such incentive schemes create a direct link between distribution companies' revenues and their service reliability. Thus, these schemes have changed the role of reliability from a technical constraint to an economic factor. In this occasion, distribution companies require new techniques to incorporate the effects of incentive reliability...
