, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mehrbod, Mehrzad (Author) ; Kouchakzadeh, Mohammad Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The present study investigates the effect of MR materials on the vibrations of three-layer pretwisted rotating beams. For this purpose, by considering MR material as the core of the rotating beam and using Hamilton's principle, the equations governing the three-layer rotating beam are extracted. After solving the desired equation, we optimize the dynamic behavior of the three-layer beam at different rotational speeds. Using the Genetic Algorithm optimization tool, the desired beam weight will be minimized and maximum damping will be applied to the desired system. The goal is to find the optimum magnetic field strength for maximum damping in the system at any rotational speed, in addition to...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Pourmohammadi, Mohammad Fazel (Author) ; Alijani Moghaddam, Hassan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Since 1906, after the earthquake of Messina in Italy, Italian engineers start developing a new method for increasing the resistance of a structure during an earthquake. With the limitation of time and technology, this method was acceptable for the time period. By developing the accelerographs and seismographs and the methods to process big data, new methods are developed and are being used in designing structures; new technologies allow engineers to analyze the performance of structures with ease. The studies in this research indicates that achieving the safety indices in any design require utilizing all dynamic properties of a structure such as period, stiffness and damping. In this...

    2013
    Abstract
Nitinol stents are used to minimize improper dynamic behavior, low twistability, and inadequate radial mechanical strength of femoral artery stents. In this study, finite element method is used to investigate the effect of crimping and Austenite finish temperature (A f) of Nitinol on mechanical performance of Z-shaped open-cell femoral stent under crimping conditions. Results show that low A f Nitinol has better mechanical and clinical performance due to small chronic outward force, large radial resistive force, and appropriate superelastic behavior

    Abstract
In this study, a new antibacklash gear mechanism design comprising three pinions and a rack is introduced. This mechanism offers several advantages compared to conventional antibacklash mechanisms, such as lower transmission error as well as lower required preload. Nonlinear dynamic modeling of this mechanism is developed to acquire insight into its dynamic behavior. It is observed that the amount of preload required to diminish the backlash depends on the applied input torque and nature of periodic mesh stiffness. Then, an attempt is made to obtain an approximate relation to find the minimum requiring preload to preserve the system's antibacklash property and reduce friction and wear on the...

Clearance effects on dynamic behavior of a continuous mechanical system

    , Article JVC/Journal of Vibration and Control ; Volume 21, Issue 13 , October , 2015 , Pages 2509-2519 ; 10775463 (ISSN) Hosseini Kordkheili, S. A ; Momeni Massouleh, S. H ; Khorasani, R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
An analytical modified method is presented to investigate the clearance effects on the dynamic behavior of cantilever beams. In this work, apart from clearance, all other nonlinearities are avoided to be considered during the analytical solution. The beam is idealized using an equivalent single-degree-of-freedom structure. A tri-linear stiffness system is also adopted to simulate the beam together with the clearance. Subsequently the analytical solution is derived for a cantilever beam structure with and without considering structural damping. The experimental method is employed to verify the results from the presented analytical solutions. It is noted that the results obtained by the...

    Abstract
A hybrid controller is proposed for Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) processes. Since the process is described by a set of Partial Differential Algebraic Equations (PDAE's), first a Local Reduced Order Model (LROM) for the process is developed and then it is formalized as a hybrid system. A controller is designed for purity control of the process in the presence of external disturbances, by determining the maximal safe set of the LROM. Hybrid backward reachability analysis is performed for this purpose. The controller is designed and applied to a two-bed, six-step PSA process whose dynamical behavior is simulated by a full-order principle-based model of the process. Excellent performance of...

    Abstract
In this work, the dynamic and vibrational behavior of a micro/nano-manipulator has been studied. The manipulator comprises three links attached serially. While the connection of the links is rigid, which makes the whole body a monolithic structure, the movement of the manipulator is derived from the links deflection. Piezoelectric layers were employed as an actuator to impose deflection on the links, thereby moving the manipulator. After defining the dynamic behavior of each link, manipulator equations of motion were developed. To evaluate the validity of the mathematical model, two FEM models were constructed. The observed results showed a good agreement between the models, and they...

    Abstract
Owing to the local/heterogeneous structures in supercooled liquids, after several decades of research, it is now clear that supercooled liquids are structurally different from their conventional liquid counterparts. Accordingly, an approach based on a local probe should provide a better understanding about the local mechanical properties as well as heterogeneous structures. Recently, the superiority of active microrheology over global rheology has been demonstrated [Yu et al., Sci. Adv., 2020, 6, 8766]. Here, we elaborate this new avenue of research and provide more evidence for such superiority. We report on the results of an extensive molecular dynamics simulation of active microrheology...

    Abstract
In this research, a new transient mathematical model based upon tanks-in-series configuration was developed to simulate the direct synthesis of dimethyl ether (DME) from syngas in a commercial-scale slurry bubble column reactor. A comparison between the simulation results and experimental data showed that the applied model might acceptably describe the behavior of the slurry reactor. Furthermore, simulation results in the heterogeneous bubble flow regime indicated that the proposed model with 10 tanks-in-series provided the optimum condition. Utilizing this transient model and considering catalyst deactivation, the effect of operating conditions on DME productivity and CO conversion were...

Nonlinear dynamics of nano-resonators: an analytical approach

    , Article Microsystem Technologies ; 2015 ; 09467076 (ISSN) Maani Miandoab, E ; Nejat Pishkenari,, H ; Yousefi Koma, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Prior to the design and fabrication of MEMS/NEMS devices, analysis of static and dynamic behaviors of these systems is necessary. In the present study, the nonlinear dynamic behavior of micro- and nano-mechanical resonators is investigated and classified based on the resonator’s physical parameters for first time. The Galerkin method is used to convert the distributed-parameter model to a nonlinear ordinary differential equation where mid-plane stretching, axial stress, DC electrostatic and AC harmonic voltages are taken into account. To obtain the analytical frequency response of the micro resonator near its primary resonance, the second order multiple scales method is applied to the...

Mechanical behavior of electrical hollow composite post insulators: Experimental and analytical study

    , Article Engineering Structures ; 2015 , Pages 129-141 ; 01410296 (ISSN) Epackachi, S ; Dolatshahi, K. M ; Oliveto, N. D ; Reinhorn, A. M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Electrical post insulators are important components of electrical substations since any type of failure in such insulators leads to the breakdown of the local network. Although the electrical substations are often in service condition, any horizontal excitation due to the earthquake, or any extreme event, may cause lateral deformation and damage to the post insulators. Hollow composite post insulators, a new and evolving technology, have a very complex mechanical behavior due to their materials and connections. To date, the design of such post insulators has been based on the limited test results available in the literature. Most of experiments have been conducted on small-scale specimens...

    Abstract
The seismic responses of steel water tanks are unconventional given their complex dynamic behavior and the sources of nonlinearity. Therefore, providing a reliable, finite-element model is instrumental in better understanding their dynamic behavior and improving the design conditions. This paper aims to evaluate the seismic performance of steel water tanks using shaking table tests and provide a finite-element reference model for simulating real-size, semi-anchored water tanks by conducting a series of large-scale tests in the Shaking Table Lab of the Sharif University of Technology (SUT). Since scaling the tank requires a difficult process involving changing the liquid density, this paper...
