Stability of linear dynamic systems over the packet erasure channel: A co-design approach

    , Article International Journal of Control ; Volume 88, Issue 12 , May , 2015 , Pages 2488-2498 ; 00207179 (ISSN) Farhadi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Taylor and Francis Ltd  2015
    Abstract
This paper is concerned with the stability of linear time-invariant dynamic systems over the packet erasure channel subject to minimum bit rate constraint when an encoder and a decoder are unaware of the control signal. This assumption results in co-designing the encoder, decoder and controller. The encoder, decoder, controller and conditions relating transmission rate to packet erasure probability and eigenvalues of the system matrix A are presented for almost sure asymptotic stability of linear time-invariant dynamic systems over the packet erasure channel with feedback acknowledgment. When the eigenvalues of the system matrix A are real valued, it is shown that the obtained condition for...

Interictal EEG noise cancellation: GEVD and DSS based approaches versus ICA and DCCA based methods

    , Article IRBM ; Volume 36, Issue 1 , 2015 , Pages 20-32 ; 19590318 (ISSN) Hajipour Sardouie, S ; Shamsollahi, M. B ; Albera, L ; Merlet, I ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Denoising is an important preprocessing stage in some ElectroEncephaloGraphy (EEG) applications. For this purpose, Blind Source Separation (BSS) methods, such as Independent Component Analysis (ICA) and Decorrelated and Colored Component Analysis (DCCA), are commonly used. Although ICA and DCCA-based methods are powerful tools to extract sources of interest, the procedure of eliminating the effect of sources of non-interest is usually manual. It should be noted that some methods for automatic selection of artifact sources after BSS methods exist, although they imply a training supervised step. On the other hand, in cases where there are some a prioriinformation about the subspace of...

Influence of model simplifications and parameters on dynamic performance of grid connected fixed speed wind turbines

    , Article 19th International Conference on Electrical Machines, ICEM 2010, 6 September 2010 through 8 September 2010, Rome ; 2010 ; 9781424441754 (ISBN) Tohidi, S ; Rabiee, A ; Parniani, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
With the rising penetration of wind power into electric power systems, more accurate and comprehensive studies are required to identify the interaction between wind farm(s) and power system. This requires accurate models of different types of wind turbine-generators. This paper describes modeling and small signal analysis of a grid connected fixed speed wind turbine generator (FSWTG). A complete model of FSWTG is derived and some reduced-order models are deduced. Eigenvalues and participation factors of the system for these models are calculated. Then, using the eigen analysis results, the models are compared and the simplifying assumptions which have been considered in the literatures are...

    , Article 17th International Congress on Sound and Vibration 2010, ICSV 2010, 18 July 2010 through 22 July 2010 ; Volume 1 , 2010 , Pages 464-471 ; 9781617822551 (ISBN) Moradi, H ; Bakhtiari Nejad, F ; Sadighi, M ; Alasty, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, a robotic manipulator modelled as a cantilever rotating Euler-Bernoulli beam is considered. Control objective is achieving a desired angular rotation of the manipulator tip while its lateral vibration is suppressed. An external driving torque is the control input of the system. Two dynamic transfer functions are derived to describe beam tip motion and angular rotation in terms of the desired angular rotation. After state-space representation of the problem, an observer is designed to estimate state variables of the system. Then, a feedback control is designed for both regulation and tracking objectives. Eigenvalues are chosen such that an appropriate response is achieved while...

    , Article 2010 Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, EMBC'10, 31 August 2010 through 4 September 2010, Buenos Aires ; 2010 , Pages 5573-5576 ; 9781424441235 (ISBN) Razavian, S. M. J ; Torabi, M ; Kim, K ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
In this study, we are proposing a novel nonlinear classification approach to discriminate between Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and a control group using T1-weighted and T2- weighted Magnetic Resonance Images (MRI's) of brain. Since T1-weighted images and T2-weighted images have inherent physical differences, obviously each of them has its own particular medical data and hence, we extracted some specific features from each. Then the variations of the relevant eigenvalues of the extracted features were tracked to pick up the most informative ones. The final features were assigned to two parallel systems to be nonlinearly categorized. Considering the fact that AD defects the white and gray regions...

    Abstract
    Let G be a graph of order n such that ∑n i=0(-1) iailambdan-i and ∑n i=0(-1) iailambdan-i are the characteristic polynomials of the signless Laplacian and the Laplacian matrices of G, respectively. We show that a i ≥b i for i=0,1,⋯,n. As a consequence, we prove that for any α, 0<α≤1, if q 1,⋯,q n and μ 1,⋯,μ n are the signless Laplacian and the Laplacian eigenvalues of G, respectively, then q 1 alpha+⋯+qα n≥μ α 1+⋯+μα n

Development of a 2-D 2-group neutron noise simulator for hexagonal geometries

    , Article Annals of Nuclear Energy ; Volume 37, Issue 8 , 2010 , Pages 1089-1100 ; 03064549 (ISSN) Malmir, H ; Vosoughi, N ; Zahedinejad, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, the development of a neutron noise simulator for hexagonal-structured reactor cores using both the forward and the adjoint methods is reported. The spatial discretisation of both 2-D 2-group static and dynamic equations is based on a developed box-scheme finite difference method for hexagonal mesh boxes. Using the power iteration method for the static calculations, the 2-group neutron flux and its adjoint with the corresponding eigenvalues are obtained by the developed static simulator. The results are then benchmarked against the well-known CITATION computer code. The dynamic calculations are performed in the frequency domain which leads to discarding of the time...

A graph weighting method for reducing consensus time in random geographical networks

, Article 24th IEEE International Conference on Advanced Information Networking and Applications Workshops, WAINA 2010, 20 April 2010 through 23 April 2010, Perth ; 2010 , Pages 317-322 ; 9780769540191 (ISBN) Jalili, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Sensor networks are increasingly employed in many applications ranging from environmental to military cases. The network topology used in many sensor network applications has a kind of geographical structure. A graph weighting method for reducing consensus time in random geographical networks is proposed in this paper. We consider a method based on the mutually coupled oscillators for providing general consensus in the network. In this way, one can relate the consensus time to the properties of the Laplacian matrix of the connection graph, i.e. to the second smallest eigenvalue (algebraic connectivity). Our weighting algorithm is based on the node and edge between centrality measures. The...

    , Article Journal of Fluids and Structures ; Volume 26, Issue 5 , July , 2010 , Pages 747-763 ; 08899746 (ISSN) Firouz Abadi, R. D ; Noorian, M. A ; Haddadpour, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
In this paper, a fluid-structure interaction model for stability analysis of shells conveying fluid is developed. This model is developed for shells of arbitrary geometry and structure and is based on incompressible potential flow. The boundary element method is applied to model the potential flow. The fluid dynamics model is derived by using an inflow/outflow model along with the impermeability condition at the fluid-shell interface. This model is applied to obtain the flow modes and eigenvalues, which are used for the modal representation of the flow field in the shell. Based on the mode shapes and natural frequencies of the shell obtained from an FEM model, the modal analysis technique is...

    Abstract
Mean field independent component analysis (MF-ICA) along with other chemometric techniques was proposed for obtaining more information from multi-component gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric (GC-MS) signals of essential oils (mandarin and lemon as examples). Using these techniques, some fundamental problems during the GC-MS analysis of essential oils such as varying baseline, presence of different types of noise and co-elution have been solved. The parameters affecting MF-ICA algorithm were screened using a 25 factorial design. The optimum conditions for MF-ICA algorithm were followed by deconvolution of complex GC-MS peak clusters. The number of independent components (ICs) (chemical...

Optical anisotropy of schwarzschild metric within equivalent medium framework

    , Article Optics Communications ; Volume 283, Issue 7 , April , 2010 , Pages 1222-1228 ; 00304018 (ISSN) Khorasani, S ; Rashidian, B ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
It is has been long known that the curved space in the presence of gravitation can be described as a non-homogeneous anisotropic medium in flat geometry with different constitutive equations. In this article, we show that the eigenpolarizations of such medium can be exactly solved, leading to a pseudo-isotropic description of curved vacuum with two refractive index eigenvalues having opposite signs, which correspond to forward and backward travel in time. We conclude that for a rotating universe, time-reversal symmetry is broken. We also demonstrate the applicability of this method to Schwarzschild metric and derive exact forms of refractive index. We derive the subtle optical anisotropy of...

    , Article ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition, Proceedings, 13 November 2009 through 19 November 2009 ; Volume 10, Issue PART A , 2010 , Pages 133-140 ; 9780791843833 (ISBN) Moradi, H ; Haji Hajikolaei, K ; Motamedi, M ; Alasty, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
To achieve high rate of data transfer, tape mechanisms must be able to transport the tape with a constant velocity for scanning. During this process, it is desired to make the rise time minimized without timing and data transfer errors. In this paper, three servo systems including the take-up and supply reel servos for tape tension control and capstan servo for speed control are considered. So, tape transport mechanisms can be described with a nonlinear multi-input multi-output system (MIMO). After state-space representation of the problem, feedback control is designed for tracking objective. It should be mentioned that an increase in the speed of time response of system corresponds to an...

Multiple antenna spectrum sensing in cognitive radios

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications ; Volume 9, Issue 2 , 2010 , Pages 814-823 ; 15361276 (ISSN) Taherpour, A ; Nasiri-Kenari, M ; Gazor, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, we consider the problem of spectrum sensing by using multiple antenna in cognitive radios when the noise and the primary user signal are assumed as independent complex zero-mean Gaussian random signals. The optimal multiple antenna spectrum sensing detector needs to know the channel gains, noise variance, and primary user signal variance. In practice some or all of these parameters may be unknown, so we derive the Generalized Likelihood Ratio (GLR) detectors under these circumstances. The proposed GLR detector, in which all the parameters are unknown, is a blind and invariant detector with a low computational complexity. We also analytically compute the missed detection and...

    Abstract
This paper investigates the free vibrations of a shell made of n cone segments joined together. The governing equations of the conical shell were obtained by applying the Sanders shell theory and the Hamilton principle. Then, these governing equations are solved by using the power series method and considering a displacement field which is harmonic function about the time and the circumferential coordinate. Using the boundary conditions of the two ends of the shell and the continuity conditions at the interface section of shell segments, and solving the eigenvalue problem, the natural frequencies and the mode shapes are obtained. Very good agreements exist between the analytical results of...

New basis functions for wave equation

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 23, Issue 6 , 2016 , Pages 2928-2933 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Khorasani, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The Differential Transfer Matrix Method is extended to the complex plane, which allows dealing with singularities at turning points. The results for real-valued systems are simplified and a pair of basis functions are found. These bases are a bit less accurate than WKB solutions but much easier to work with because of their algebraic form. Furthermore, these bases exactly satisfy the initial conditions and may go over the turning points without the divergent behavior of WKB solutions. The findings of this paper allow explicit evaluation of eigenvalues of confined modes with high precision, as demonstrated by few examples

A new simplified formula in prediction of the resonance velocity for multiple masses traversing a thin beam

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 23, Issue 1 , 2016 , Pages 133-141 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Afghani Khoraskani, R ; Mofid, M ; Eftekhar Azam, S ; Ebrahimzadeh Hassanabadi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this article, transverse vibration of an Euler-Bernoulli beam carrying a series of traveling masses is analyzed. A semi-analytical approach based on eigenfunction expansion method is employed to achieve the dynamic response of the beam. The inertia of the traveling masses changes the fundamental period of the base beam. Therefore, a comprehensive parametric survey is required to reveal the resonance velocity of the traversing inertial loads. In order to facilitate resonance detection for engineering practitioners, a new simplified formula is proposed to approximate the resonance velocity

Enhanced finite difference scheme for the neutron diffusion equation using the importance function

    , Article Annals of Nuclear Energy ; Volume 96 , 2016 , Pages 412-421 ; 03064549 (ISSN) Vagheian, M ; Vosoughi, N ; Gharib, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Mesh point positions in Finite Difference Method (FDM) of discretization for the neutron diffusion equation can remarkably affect the averaged neutron fluxes as well as the effective multiplication factor. In this study, by aid of improving the mesh point positions, an enhanced finite difference scheme for the neutron diffusion equation is proposed based on the neutron importance function. In order to determine the neutron importance function, the adjoint (backward) neutron diffusion calculations are performed in the same procedure as for the forward calculations. Considering the neutron importance function, the mesh points can be improved through the entire reactor core. Accordingly, in...

    Abstract
This paper presents a methodology for implementing of the mathematical model of H-Bridge converter in an FPGA-based Real-Time simulator. Furthermore, it introduces a new method for choosing parameters of the Associate Discrete Circuit (ADC) model of semiconductor switches. The ADC-based model allows obtaining a fixed topology irrespective of switches states for the power electronic converters in the digital simulation. Backward-Euler based discretized state space matrix (SSM) of the circuit used for ADC parameter. Choosing appropriate switch parameter is based on 1) reducing the distance of SSM eigenvalues from origin in z-Plane to reduce settling-Time of system response; and 2) reducing the...

    Abstract
The potentials of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as mechanical resonators for atomic-scale mass sensing are presented. To this aim, a nonlocal continuum-based model is proposed to study the dynamic behavior of bridged single-walled carbon nanotube-based mass nanosensors. The carbon nanotube (CNT) is considered as an elastic Euler–Bernoulli beam with von Kármán type geometric nonlinearity. Eringen’s nonlocal elastic field theory is utilized to model the interatomic long-range interactions within the structure of the CNT. This developed model accounts for the arbitrary position of the deposited atomic-mass. The natural frequencies and associated mode shapes are determined based on an eigenvalue...

    Abstract
Recently, an approximate formalism [Opt. Express 23, 2764, (2015)] called diffractive interface theory has been reported for the fast analysis of the optical response of metasurfaces, subwavelength two-dimensional periodic arrays. In this method, the electromagnetic boundary conditions are derived using the susceptibility distribution of the metasurface, such that the analysis of metasurface is possible without solving any eigenvalue equation inside the grating layer. In this paper, we modify the boundary conditions to achieve more accurate results. In addition, in this paper, correct Fourier factorization rules are also applied leading to faster convergence rate. The obtained results are...
