    Abstract
Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a novel solid state welding process for joining materials. In this process a high speed tool is introduced into the weld seam and due to localized frictional heat, plastic deformation and transverse movement along the weld seam, joining is accomplished. In this study aluminum matrix composite A356 + 15%SiCp is chosen for friction stir welding. Fragmentation of SiC particles and silicon needles existing in eutectic phase as well as their homogenous distribution as a result of stirring with high plastic strains, improve mechanical properties such as modulus of elasticity, yield and ultimate strength, elongation and hardness in the weld zone compared to that of...

    Abstract
Determination of soil shear modulus is one of the most controversial topics in unsaturated soil dynamics. Due to the fact that soils have an anisotropic response, the shear strength and stiffness of geological materials are greatly dependent on the principal stress direction and the intermediate principal stress. In this study, the effects of principal stress direction on shear modulus of unsaturated medium-dense sand have been investigated using cyclic hollow cylinder apparatus. Three series of stress-controlled cyclic tests with different fixed principal stress directions were carried out on the sand sample under different values of suction. Results reveal that shear modulus of unsaturated...

    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
In current study, microstructure and high-temperature mechanical properties of ZK60 magnesium alloy reinforced by SiC whiskers were investigated after casting, the KOBO extrusion and aging processes. For this purpose, ZK60/SiCw composite specimens were prepared by stir casting technique. In order to achieve a laminar structure and improve the strength, the samples were subjected to KOBO extrusion technique and precipitation hardening, resulting in improved strength and increased ductility. The former is due to grain refining and formation of precipitates in the microstructure, while the latter is attributed to grain refining and formation of laminar structure. To evaluate the strength of the...

    Abstract
Assessing the durability of concrete is of prime importance to provide an adequate service life and reduce the repairing cost of structures. Freeze-thaw is one such test that indicates the ability of concrete to last a long time without a significant loss in its performance. In this study, the freeze-thaw resistance of polymer concrete containing different polymer contents was explored and compared to various conventional cement concretes. Concretes’ fresh and hardened properties were assessed for their workability, air content, and compressive strength. The mass loss, length change, dynamic modulus of elasticity, and residual compressive strength were determined for all types of concretes...

Experimental study on dynamic properties of sand with emphasis on the degree of saturation

    , Article Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering ; Volume 32, Issue 1 , 2012 , Pages 26-41 ; 02677261 (ISSN) Jafarzadeh, F ; Sadeghi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Cyclic drained and undrained tests were performed in a modified simple shear device in order to specifically investigate the effect of saturation ratio on shear modulus and damping parameters of sand. In addition to the degree of saturation, the effects of number of cycles, vertical consolidation stress, shear strain amplitude and relative density on dynamic properties of sand were investigated. Dynamic stiffness and damping characteristic were found to be substantially independent of saturation ratio in the range of 25-75%. However, by approaching the full saturation state, the values of modulus fall sharply and damping of loose samples increases dramatically from corresponding values of...

    Abstract
There are limitations in current medications of articular cartilage injuries. Although injectable bioactive hydrogels are promising options, they have decreased biomechanical performance. Researchers should consider many factors when providing solutions to overcome these challenges. In this study, we created an injectable composite hydrogel from chitosan and human acellular cartilage extracellular matrix (ECM) particles. In order to enhance its mechanical properties, we reinforced this hydrogel with microporous microspheres composed of the same materials as the structural building blocks of the scaffold. Articular cartilage from human donors was decellularized by a combination of physical,...

    , Article Mechanics of Materials ; Volume 41, Issue 7 , 2009 , Pages 868-877 ; 01676636 (ISSN) Avazmohammadi, R ; Naghdabadi, R ; Weng, G. J ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
Exact solutions for nonlinear composites undergoing finite deformation are in general difficult to find. In this article, such a solution is obtained for a two-phase composite reinforced with elliptic fibers under anti-plane shear. The analysis is based on the theory of hyperelasticity with both phases characterized by incompressible neo-Hookean strain energies, and is carried out when the composite elliptic cylinder assemblage carries a confocal microgeometry. The problem for a class of compressible neo-Hookean materials is also studied. The analytical results for the stress and strain distributions are verified with finite element calculations where excellent agreement is found. We then...

    Abstract
Soils are usually weak in tension therefore different materials such as geosynthetics are used to address this inadequacy. Worldwide annual consumption of geosynthetics is close to 1000 million m2, and the value of these materials is probably close to US$1500 million. Since the total cost of the construction is at least four or five times the cost of the geosynthetic itself, the impact of these materials on civil engineering construction is very large indeed. Nevertheless, there are several significant problems associated with geosynthetics, such as creep, low modulus of elasticity, and susceptibility to aggressive environment. Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) was introduced over two...

    Abstract
Forced and free vibrational analyses of viscoelastic nanotubes containing fluid under a moving load in complex environments incorporating surface effects are conducted based on the nonlocal strain gradient theory and the Rayleigh beam model. To model the internal nanoflow, the slip boundary condition is employed. Adopting the Galerkin discretization approach, the reduced-order dynamic model of the system is acquired. Analytical and numerical methods are exploited to determine the dynamic response of the system. The impacts of geometry, scale parameter ratio, Knudsen number, fluid velocity, rotary inertia parameter, viscoelastic parameter, surface residual stress, surface elastic modulus, and...

    Abstract
Pentamode metamaterials are a type of extremal designer metamaterials, which are able to demonstrate extremely high rigidity in one direction and extremely high compliance in other directions. Pentamodes can, therefore, be considered as building blocks of exotic materials with any arbitrarily selected thermodynamically admissible elasticity tensor. The pentamode lattices can then be envisioned to be combined to construct intermediate extremal materials, such as quadramodes, trimodes, and bimodes. In this study, we constructed several primary types of anisotropic pentamode lattices (with midpoint positioning of 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, 30%, 35%, and 42% of the main unit cell diagonal) and then...

    Abstract
In this study, two classes of advanced finite volume schemes, including Multi-Point Flux Approximation (MPFA) and Dual Discrete Finite Volume (DDFV) method, have been employed in conjunction with the finite element (FE) geomechanics simulator to model the coupled fluid-solid system. Fully saturated porous media with poroelastic behavior, random field permeability and elastic modulus are considered as parameters. The performance of the proposed hydro-mechanical models, including MPFA O-FEM and DDFV-FEM, is examined through different test cases. First, the models are validated and compared with the closed-form solutions in the homogeneous domain. Second, the methods' stability and convergence...

Impact of hydraulic hysteresis on the small strain shear modulus of unsaturated sand

    , Article Soils and Foundations ; Volume 58, Issue 2 , 2018 , Pages 344-354 ; 00380806 (ISSN) Khosravi, A ; Shahbazan, P ; Pak, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Japanese Geotechnical Society  2018
    Abstract
The results of previous studies on silt and clay indicated that variations in the small strain shear modulus, Gmax, during hydraulic hysteresis had a non-linear increasing trend with matric suction, with greater values upon wetting. However, due to differences in material properties and inter-particle forces, a different behavior is expected for the Gmax of unsaturated sand. Although considerable research has been devoted in recent years to characterizing the behavior of the Gmax of sand during drying, less attention has been paid to the effect of hydraulic hysteresis on Gmax and its variations during wetting. In the study presented herein, an effective stress-based semi-empirical model was...

Impact of void ratio and state parameters on the small strain shear modulus of unsaturated soils

    , Article 15th Asian Regional Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, ARC 2015: New Innovations and Sustainability ; 2015 , Pages 241-246 Khosravi, A ; Gheibi, A ; Rahimi, M ; McCartney, J. S ; Haeri, S. M
    Abstract
The unsaturated small strain shear modulus, Gmax, is a key reference value in predicting relationships between dynamic shear modulus and shear strain amplitude and is thus a key quantity to properly model the behavior of dynamically-loaded geotechnical systems such as pavements, rail beds, and machine foundations. From the interpretation of the experimental Gmax results for unsaturated soils, different definitions of trends between Gmax and the stress state of the unsaturated soils and material properties are proposed. However, in most of trends, the relationship between the stress state and void ratio is considered and the effect of void ratio on the unsaturated small strain shear modulus...

Influence of fines content and type on the small-strain shear modulus of sand

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Vol. 21, issue. 4 , 2014 , p. 1281-1296 Paydar, N. A ; Ahmadi, M. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The small-strain shear modulus, Go, is an important fundamental soil property. Although many studies have been conducted on this property for clean sands and pure clays, small-strain behavior for mixtures of sand and fines has been less addressed. This paper presents the results of a comprehensive laboratory study on G0 value of sand containing various amounts of different fines. To this aim, bender elements were integrated into a conventional triaxial apparatus, and shear wave velocity was measured on samples of sand with different amounts of highly-plastic, medium-plastic, low-plastic, or non-plastic fines at different void ratios. Measuring the shear wave velocity and thus...

    Abstract
Limited regeneration capacity of cartilage can be addressed by tissue engineering approaches including localized delivery of bioactive agents using biomaterials. Although chitosan hydrogels have been considered as appropriate candidates for these purposes, however, their poor mechanical properties limit their real applications. Here, we develop in situ forming chitosan hydrogels with enhanced shear modulus by chemical modification of chitosan using N-(β-maleimidopropyloxy) succinimide ester (BMPS). Moreover, we utilize β-Glycerophosphate (β-GP) in the hydrogels for achieving thermosensitivity. We investigate the effects of BMPS, β-GP and chitosan concentration on rheological and swelling...

    Abstract
Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) thin films were reinforced by glutaraldehyde and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and then mechanical, water solubility, water swelling, water uptake, water vapor permeability, and antibacterial properties of the films were examined. Cross-linking by glutaraldehyde or incorporation of MWCNT caused a significant increase in tensile strength, decrease in elongation at break, and increase in Young's modulus of the PVA films, while MWCNTs were more effective rather than that of glutaraldehyde. Cross-linking by glutaraldehyde or incorporation of MWCNT caused a significant decrease in water solubility, water swelling and water uptake, with a similar manner....

The microstructure of the nanocomposites was examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). XRD and TEM indicated that almost fully exfoliated PE/clay nanocomposites were produced successfully using this method. According to permeability...

Investigation of the interphase effects on the mechanical behavior of carbon nanotube polymer composites by multiscale modeling

    , Article Journal of Applied Polymer Science ; Volume 117, Issue 1 , March , 2010 , Pages 361-367 ; 00218995 (ISSN) Montazeri, A ; Naghdabadi, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
In this article, a multiscale modeling procedure is implemented to study the effect of interphase on the Young's modulus of CNT/polymer composites. For this purpose, a three-phase RVE is introduced which consists of three components, i.e., a carbon nanotube, an interphase layer, and an outer polymer matrix. The nanotube is modeled at the atomistic scale using molecular structural mechanics. Moreover, three-dimensional elements are employed to model the interphase layer and polymer matrix. The nanotube and polymer matrix are assumed to be bonded by van der Waals interactions based on the Lennard-Jones potential at the interface. Using this Molecular Structural Mechanics/Finite Element...
