    Abstract
This is the first research on the free vibration analysis of functionally graded graphene platelets reinforced composite (FG-GPLRC) viscoelastic annular plate resting on the visco-Pasternak foundation and subjected to the nonlinear temperature gradient and mechanical loading within the framework of higher-order shear deformation theory (HSDT). Hamilton's principle is employed to establish governing equations within the framework of HSDT. In this paper, viscoelastic properties are modeled according to Kelvin-Voigt viscoelasticity. The deflection as the function of time can be solved by the fourth-order Runge-Kutta numerical method. Generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM) is applied...

    , Article Applied Ocean Research ; Volume 94 , 2020 Shahali, P ; Haddadpour, H ; Hosseini Kordkheili, S. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
This paper investigates the nonlinear dynamic response of a viscoelastic pipe conveying fluid subjected to a uniform external cross flow based on the Euler-Bernoulli theory. The main objective of this work is to find the proper viscoelastic coefficients to mitigate the dynamic response of a marine riser. A nonlinear oscillator is utilized to simulate the mean drag force and the vortex-induced lift force. Also, the pipe material is assumed to be viscoelastic and consisted of the Kelvin-Voigt type. The extended Hamilton's principle along with the Galerkin discretization are employed to construct the nonlinear model of the coupled fluid-structure system. Moreover, the assumed mode method along...

    Abstract
This is a fundamental study on the nonlinear vibrations considering large amplitude in multi-sized hybrid Nano-composites (MHC) disk (MHCD) relying on nonlinear elastic media and located in an environment with gradually changed temperature feature. Carbon fibers (CF) or carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in the macro or nano sizes respectively are responsible for reinforcing the matrix. For prediction of the efficiency of the properties MHCD's modified Halpin-Tsai theory has been presented. The strain-displacement relation in multi-sized laminated disk's nonlinear dynamics through applying Von Karman nonlinear shell-theory and using third-order-shear-deformation-theory (TSDT) is determined. The energy...

    Abstract
In this article, size-dependent vibrations and the stability of moving viscoelastic axially functionally graded (AFG) nanobeams were investigated numerically and analytically, aiming at the stability enhancement of translating nanosystems. Additionally, a parametric investigation is presented to elucidate the influence of various key factors such as axial gradation of the material, viscosity coecient, and nonlocal parameter on the stability boundaries of the system. Material characteristics of the system vary smoothly along the axial direction based on a power-law distribution function. Laplace transformation in conjunction with the Galerkin discretization scheme was implemented to obtain...

Exact diffusion-induced elastic fields of a spherical core-shell nano-electrode li-ion battery via spectral theory

    , Article Journal of the Electrochemical Society ; Volume 167, Issue 13 , 2020 Shodja, H. M ; Shahryari, B ; Azizi, P ; Roumi, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    IOP Publishing Ltd  2020
    Abstract
In Li-ion batteries the interface between the nano-size spherical core graphite and its surrounding solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer, just inside SEI is susceptible to damage. Thus, accurate determination of the associated elastic fields is one of the challenges in optimizing the lifetime and capacity of Li-ion batteries. The required precision is achieved by considering the core graphite which belongs to the crystal class D6h as homogeneous spherically isotropic and SEI layer as functionally graded (FG) isotropic material. Moreover, to account for the surface/interface effects appropriately the core-shell nano-structure subjected to the diffusion-induced time-dependent nonuniform...

    Elsevier B.V  2020
    Abstract
Low Salinity Waterflooding (LSWF) has become a popular tertiary injection EOR method recently. Both fluid-fluid and fluid-rock interactions are suggested as the contributing mechanisms on the effectiveness of LSWF. Considering the contradictory remarks in the literature, the dominating mechanisms and necessary conditions for Low Salinity Effect (LSE) varies for different crude oil-brine-rock (CBR) systems. The aim of the present study is to investigate LSE for an oil field in the Middle East that is composed of separate sandstone and limestone layers. Contact angles and Interfacial Tension (IFT) are measured to have more insight on the CBR under investigation. Visual experiments were...

American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)  2020
    Abstract
Drill strings are subjected to complex coupled dynamics. Therefore, accurate dynamic modeling, which can represent the physical behavior of real drill strings, is of great importance for system analysis and control. The most widely used dynamic models for such systems are the lumped element models, which neglect the system distributed feature. In this paper, a dynamic model called neutral-type time delay model is modified to investigate the coupled axial–torsional vibrations in drill strings. This model is derived directly from the distributed parameter model by employing the d’Alembert method. Coupling of axial and torsional vibration modes occurs in the bit–rock interface. For the first...

R ; WIT Transactions on Engineering Sciences ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
Aerodynamic coefficients on a two dimensional plunging airfoil, in a low-speed wind tunnel are presented. Dynamic motion was produced by plunging the model over a range of reduced frequencies, and mean angles of attack. The Reynolds number in the present test was held fixed (Re = 1.5×10 5), and the reduced frequency was varied in an almost wide range. Surface static pressure distribution was measured on the upper and lower sides of the model, during the oscillating motion. It was found that reduced frequency had strong effects on the pressure distribution, near the leading edge of the airfoil. For mean equivalent angles of attack of 0, 5 degrees, hysteresis loops on the upper surface of the...

    , Article Engineering Fracture Mechanics ; Volume 75, Issue 16 , 2008 , Pages 4695-4705 ; 00137944 (ISSN) Behzad, M ; Meghdari, A ; Ebrahimi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
In this paper, a new linear theory for bending stress-strain analysis of a cracked beam has been developed. A displacement field has been suggested for the beam strain and stress calculations. The bending differential equation for the beam has been written using equilibrium equations. The required constant for this model is also obtained from fracture mechanics. The bending equation has been solved for a simply supported beam with rectangular cross-section and the results are compared with finite element and empirical results. There is an excellent agreement between theoretical results and those obtained by numerical and empirical methods. The model developed in this research is a simple and...

    Abstract
In this paper a semi-analytical method is developed to analyze functionally graded cylindrical panels. In this method, the radial domain is divided into some finite sub-domains and the material properties are assumed to be constant in each subdomain. Imposing the continuity conditions at the interface of the adjacent sub-domains, together with the global boundary conditions, a set of linear algebraic equations are derived. Solving the linear algebraic equations, the elastic response for the thick-walled FG cylindrical panel is obtained. The method can be used for all material properties variations but in present study, material properties are assumed vary with Mori-Tanaka estimation. Results...

    Abstract
An extension to the classical mass-spring model for more realistic simulation of soft tissues for surgery simulation was proposed. The conventional equations of mass-spring model were generalized for non-linear springs, and model parameters were tuned using experimental data. Results show that the proposed model is fast and interactive, and also demonstrate the typical nonlinear and visco-elastic behaviors of soft tissues well. © 2008 The authors. All rights reserved

    , Article 18th IASTED International Conference on Modelling and Simulation, MOAS 2007, Montreal, QC, 30 May 2007 through 1 June 2007 ; 2007 , Pages 284-288 ; 10218181 (ISSN) ; 9780889866638 (ISBN) Farrokh, M ; Joghataie, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
In this paper, a new method is proposed for the identification of inelastic shear frame structures with hysteresis, using data collected on their dynamic response. It uses the Prandtl-Ishlinskii rate independent model for hysteresis. The proposed identification method is capable of identifying the mass, damping and restoring force of a frame structure, which can be used in forming the equations of motion of the frame. By solving the equations of motion, the dynamic response is predicted. The method is based on the combined using of the Quadratic Programming (QP) and Genetic Algorithms (GA). First, assuming a set of Prandtl-Ishlinskii constants, the QP is used to find the best frame...

Probabilistic tolerance analysis of compliant assemblies

    , Article 2007 World Congress, Detroit, MI, 16 April 2007 through 19 April 2007 ; 2007 ; 01487191 (ISSN) Babaei, E ; Movahhedy, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    SAE International  2007
    Abstract
Tolerance analysis is essential for estimation of final error of key product characteristic (KPC) in a mechanical assembly caused by errors in production and assembly of individual parts. Many mechanical assemblies, especially in automotive and aerospace industries, include sheet metal parts with a small ratio of thickness to width or length. Such parts are substantially flexible and thus, are prone to large errors due to elastic deformations during assembly production. Phenomena such as deformation due to fixture force, spring back, welding distortion and so on are common to such parts. Unlike tolerance analysis of rigid parts, here, the elastic deformation of the parts plays a significant...

    Abstract
Finite element method has been implemented to predict stress intensity factors (SIFs) for radial cracks in annular discs under constant angular velocity. Effects of internal and external uniform pressure on the SIFs have also been considered. Linear elastic fracture mechanics finite element analyses have been performed and results are presented in the form of crack configuration factors for a wide range of components and crack geometry parameters. These parameters are chosen to be representative of typical practical situations. The extensive range of crack configuration factors obtained from the analyses is then used to develop equivalent prediction equations via a statistical multiple...

A new approach to C2 continuous piecewise bicubic representation of the articular surfaces of diarthrodial joints

    , Article Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part H: Journal of Engineering in Medicine ; Volume 220, Issue 4 , 2006 , Pages 553-563 ; 09544119 (ISSN) Jafari, A ; Farahmand, F ; Meghdari, A ; Golestanha, A. S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
Based on the force-deflection equation for a beam subjected to lateral point loads, a C2 continuous piecewise bicubic mathematical representation was proposed to model complicated geometrical surfaces, e.g. the articular surfaces of human joints. The method was then extended so that it could be used for mathematical modelling of incomplete nets of data points, as well as smoothing of noisy and/or filtering of erroneous data points. Mathematical techniques were also developed to calculate the required unknown parameters explicitly, with no need to solve the system of equations simultaneously. The performance of the proposed method was evaluated on a number of surface modelling problems,...

Three dimensional analysis of laminated cylindrical panels with piezoelectric layers

    , Article International Journal of Engineering, Transactions B: Applications ; Volume 19, Issue 1 , 2006 , Pages 61-72 ; 1728-144X (ISSN) Nosier, A ; Ruhi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
Materials and Energy Research Center  2006
    Abstract
A semi-analytical solution is presented for three dimensional elastic analysis of finitelylong, simply supported, orthotropic, laminated cylindrical panels with piezoelectric layers subjected to outer pressure and electrostatic excitation. Both the direct and inverse piezoelectric effects are investigated. The solution is obtained through reducing the highly coupled partial differential equations (PDE's) of equilibrium to ordinary differential equations (ODE's) with variable coefficients by means of trigonometric function expansion in longitudinal and circumferential directions. The resulting ODE's are solved by dividing the radial domain into some finite subdivisions and imposing necessary...

Effect of seismic wave propagation in massed medium on rate-dependent anisotropic damage growth in concrete gravity dams

    , Article Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering ; Volume 15, Issue 2 , 2021 , Pages 346-363 ; 20952430 (ISSN) Daneshyar, A ; Mohammadnezhad, H ; Ghaemian, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Seismic modeling of massive structures requires special caution, as wave propagation effects significantly affect the responses. This becomes more crucial when the path-dependent behavior of the material is considered. The coexistence of these conditions renders numerical earthquake analysis of concrete dams challenging. Herein, a finite element model for a comprehensive nonlinear seismic simulation of concrete gravity dams, including realistic soil-structure interactions, is introduced. A semi-infinite medium is formulated based on the domain reduction method in conjunction with standard viscous boundaries. Accurate representation of radiation damping in a half-space medium and wave...

    Abstract
Conventional additives used in drilling fluid may have detrimental short- and long-term impacts on the surrounding environment. The employment of biodegradable green material in drilling fluid as alternative additives will eliminate these harmful impacts. In this study, acorn shell powder is proposed as a novel biodegradable additive for application in drilling fluid. First, the acorn shell powder was prepared and then characterized in terms of chemical structure, particle size, and morphology. The acorn shell powder, with four different concentrations, was then introduced into a water-based fluid; its functionality in the fluid system was evaluated with respect to rheological and filtration...
