Effective anti-plane moduli of couple stress composites containing elliptic multi-coated nano-fibers with interfacial damage and variational bounds

    , Article International Journal of Damage Mechanics ; Volume 30, Issue 9 , 2021 , Pages 1351-1376 ; 10567895 (ISSN) Hashemian, B ; Shodja, H. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    SAGE Publications Ltd  2021
    Abstract
Prediction of the anti-plane moduli of solids consisting of a given distribution of unidirectionally aligned elliptic multi-coated fibers with interfacial damage is the focus of this paper. The fibers and their coating layers may be in the order of nano or micro scales. All the constituent phases of the composite are supposed to be described in terms of couple stress elasticity. Accordingly, the bounds for the overall shear moduli of the aforementioned composites are provided by employing the principles of minimum potential and complementary energies. Certain subtleties associated with the elliptic multi-coated fibers for three cases of pure sliding (completely damaged), imperfect (partially...

    Abstract
MXenes have recently witnessed significant evolution and advances in terms of their applications in different areas such as flexible electronics, energy storage devices, and coatings. Here, the mechanical properties of both pristine and functionalized Tin+1CnO2 and Tin+1NnO2 (n = 1, 2) are investigated utilizing classical molecular dynamics simulations. For eight different MXene structures, the stress-strain curves are calculated including Young's modulus, strength, and fracture strain. It is found that Ti2N holds the highest Young's modulus with the value of 517 GPa while Ti3C2 has the lowest one with the amount of 133 GPa. In addition, the strongest MXene structure is Ti2N while the...

    Abstract
This survey addresses the non-polynomial framework for bending responses of three-phase multi-scale hybrid laminated nanocomposite (MHLNC) reinforced circular/annular plates (MHLNCRCP/ MHLNCRAP) based upon the three-dimensional theory of elasticity for various sets of boundary conditions. The sandwich structure with two, three, five, and seven layers is modeled using compatibility conditions. The state-space based differential quadrature method (SS-DQM) is presented to examine the bending behavior of MHLNCRCP/ MHLNCRAP by considering various boundary conditions. Halpin–Tsai equations and fiber micromechanics are used in the hierarchy to predict the bulk material properties of the multi-scale...

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 12, Issue 1 , 2005 , Pages 1-9 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Rastegar, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Sharif University of Technology  2005
    Abstract
Let p be a prime number and let n be a positive integer prime to p. By an Ihara-result, one means the existence of an injection with torsion-free cokernel, from a full lattice, in the space of p-old modular forms, into a full lattice, in the space of all modular forms of level np. In this paper, Ihara-results are proven for genus two Siegel modular forms, Siegel-Jacobi forms and Hilbert modular forms. Ihara did the genus one case of elliptic modular forms [1]. A geometric formulation is proposed for the notion of p-old Siegel modular forms of genus two, using clarifying comments by R. Schmidt [2] and, then, following suggestions in an earlier paper [3] on how to prove Ihara results. The main...

A single cone-cap plasticity with an isotropic hardening rule for powder materials

    , Article International Journal of Mechanical Sciences ; Volume 47, Issue 1 , 2005 , Pages 94-109 ; 00207403 (ISSN) Khoei, A. R ; Azami, A. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
In this paper, a new single cone-cap plasticity with an isotropic hardening rule is presented for powder materials. A general form is developed for the cap plasticity, which can be compared with some common double-surface plasticity models proposed for powders in literature. The constitutive elasto-plastic matrix and its components are derived based on the definition of yield surface, hardening parameter and nonlinear elastic behavior, as a function of relative density of powder. Different aspects of the model are illustrated and the procedure for determination of powder parameters is described. Finally, the applicability of the proposed model is demonstrated in numerical simulation of...

Some advantages of the elliptic weight function for the element free galerkin method

    , Article 2005 ASME Pressure Vessels and Piping Conference, PVP2005, Denver, CO, 17 July 2005 through 21 July 2005 ; Volume 2 , 2005 , Pages 459-464 ; 0277027X (ISSN) Naghdabadi, R ; Asghari, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
In this paper, an anisotropic weight function in the elliptic form is introduced for the Element Free Galerkin Method (EFGM). In the circular (isotropic) weight function, each node has one characteristic parameter that determines its domain of influence. In the elliptic weight function, each node has three characteristic parameters that are major influence radius, minor influence radius and the direction of the major influence. Using the elliptic weight function each point of the domain may be affected by a less number of nodes in certain conditions. Thus, the computational cost of the method is decreased. In addition, the dependency of the solution on the method that is used for the...

Elastic-plastic modeling of the hardening materials based on an Eulerian strain tensor and a proper corotational rate

    , Article 2005 ASME Pressure Vessels and Piping Conference, PVP2005, Denver, CO, 17 July 2005 through 21 July 2005 ; Volume 2 , 2005 , Pages 201-206 ; 0277027X (ISSN) Naghdabadi, R ; Ghavam, K ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
In this paper a model for analyzing elastic-plastic kinematic hardening materials is introduced, based on the additive decomposition of the corotational rate of an Eulerian strain tensor In this model, the elastic constitutive equation as well as the flow rule and the hardening equation is expressed in terms of the elastic and plastic parts of the corotational rate of the mentioned Eulerian strain tensor and its conjugate stress tensor. In the flow rule, the plastic part of the corotational rate of the Eulerian strain tensor is related to the difference of the deviatoric part of the conjugate stress and the back stress tensors. A proportionality factor is used in this flow rule which must be...

    , Article Computer Methods in Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering ; Volume 8, Issue 5 , 2005 , Pages 323-330 ; 10255842 (ISSN) Wang, J. L ; Shirazi Adl, A ; Parnianpour, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
The relative vulnerability of spinal motion segments to different loading combinations remains unknown. The meta-analysis described here using the results of a validated L2-L3 nonlinear viscoelastic finite element model was designed to investigate the critical loading and its effect on the internal mechanics of the human lumbar spine. A Box-Behnken experimental design was used to design the magnitude of seven independent variables associated with loads, rotations and velocity of motion. Subsequently, an optimization method was used to find the primary and secondary variables that influence spine mechanical output related to facet forces, disc pressure, ligament forces, annulus matrix...

A new concept in joining diagonal bracings to horizontal ones

    , Article 24th International Conference on Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering, 2005, Halkidiki, 12 June 2005 through 17 June 2005 ; Volume 1 B , 2005 , Pages 699-705 Khonsari, S. V ; England, G. L ; Joeafshan Vishkaie, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
A new 'universal' structural joint with multiple applications was devised. Its application as a 'beam-to-column joint' was already investigated experimentally, and proven to be promising. The results were reported in previous OMAE conferences and elsewhere. Another fruitful application conceived for this joint is in the context of joining (diagonal) braces to the frame members of a structure. In particular, in chevron (inverted V) bracing systems, where the dominating exchanged forces between the combined diagonal braces and the horizontal brace (beam) are 'shear,' the use of the devised joint as a joining member can substantially improve the overall behaviour of the structure under dynamic...

The selected database. consists of 59 calibration chamber tests on Ticino sand with different relative densities, overconsolidation ratios, stresses, and boundary conditions. Several applications of the modeling procedure are also presented. The computer program FLAC is used to carry...

Ductility of saffil™ short fibre reinforced metals

    , Article Scripta Materialia ; Volume 53, Issue 1 , 2005 , Pages 17-21 ; 13596462 (ISSN) Weber, L ; Tavangar, R ; Mortensen, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
A critical combination of matrix strain hardening exponent and fiber volume exceeded to confer tensile ductility to short-fiber reinforced metal. The bimodal distribution of tensile ductilities observed in such materials can be attributed to a transition in damage mode, from fiber fragmentation to matrix voiding. Building on results for model composites of this class and making a few specification, a simple criterion can be proposed to predict whether such composites display a low or a high tensile elongation. The results show that, composites of this class are ductile if their matrix strain hardening exponent exceeds by more than around three per cent of unity the fiber volume fraction

Nanoscale vibrational analysis of a multi-layered graphene sheet embedded in an elastic medium

    , Article Composites Science and Technology ; Volume 65, Issue 7-8 , 2005 , Pages 1159-1164 ; 02663538 (ISSN) Behfar, K ; Naghdabadi, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
In this paper, nanoscale vibrational analysis of a multi-layered graphene sheet embedded in an elastic medium is investigated and the corresponding natural frequencies and the associated modes are determined. The modeling is based on the fact that the elastic moduli of a graphene sheet in two perpendicular orientations are different, so the plate is considered to be anisotropic. The graphene layers stacking at the top of each other bond with carbon-carbon van der Waals forces between two adjacent ones. Also, the whole multi-layered graphene sheet is influenced by polymer-carbon van der Waals forces from the surrounding elastic medium. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Al rights reserved

Localization of elastic waves in heterogeneous media with off-diagonal disorder and long-range correlations

    , Article Physical Review Letters ; Volume 94, Issue 16 , 2005 ; 00319007 (ISSN) Shahbazi, F ; Bahraminasab, A ; Vaez Allaei, S. M ; Sahimi, M ; Rahimi Tabar, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
Using the Martin-Siggia-Rose method, we study propagation of acoustic waves in strongly heterogeneous media which are characterized by a broad distribution of the elastic constants. Gaussian-white distributed elastic constants, as well as those with long-range correlations with nondecaying power-law correlation functions, are considered. The study is motivated in part by a recent discovery that the elastic moduli of rock at large length scales may be characterized by long-range power-law correlation functions. Depending on the disorder, the renormalization group (RG) flows exhibit a transition to localized regime in any dimension. We have numerically checked the RG results using the...

Damage evolution in Saffil alumina short-fibre reinforced aluminium during tensile testing

    , Article Materials Science and Engineering A ; Volume 395, Issue 1-2 , 2005 , Pages 27-34 ; 09215093 (ISSN) Tavangar, R ; Weber, L ; Mortensen, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
The evolution of microstructural damage during tensile deformation of pure aluminium reinforced with 10 vol.% alumina short fibres is studied by monitoring the evolution of density and Young's modulus as a function of tensile strain. It is found that Young's modulus drops rapidly until a strain εc ≈ 3%. The composite density remains virtually unchanged in this strain range. At strains above εc, Young's modulus decreases more slowly while the density begins to decrease linearly, indicating void growth in the composite. It is shown that the drop in Young's modulus is linked to fragmentation of fibres aligned along the stress axis, while the decrease in density is related to void opening across...

Sustainable transport indicators: Definition and integration

    , Article International Journal of Environmental Science and Technology ; Volume 2, Issue 1 , 2005 , Pages 83-96 ; 17351472 (ISSN) Rassafi, A. A ; Vaziri, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    CEERS  2005
    Abstract
In this paper, a different interpretation of sustainable transportation, is introduced, in which sustainability with respect to transportation sector for the selected countries is evaluated. This interpretation characterizes "sustainable development" through "harmonic development". It means sustainable development with special focus on transportation can be measured by the degree of conformity between environment, economy, and social aspects on one hand, and transportation on the other hand. The best indicator to perform such a measurement is elasticity. The database used for the study encompasses a series of national indicators for each country Seventy nine countries were initially selected...

Application of data envelopment analysis in identifying milestones for passenger and freight transportation sustainability

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 12, Issue 4 , 2005 , Pages 426-436 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Rassafi, A. A ; Vaziri, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Sharif University of Technology  2005
    Abstract
This study is an attempt to quantify the concept of sustainable transportation. The countries are comparatively studied using a pioneer measure for Sustainable Development (SD) and elasticity, that reflects the conformity and harmony of the growths of all sectors with passenger and freight transportation. Firstly, the elasticity of the non-transportation variables, with respect to passenger and freight transportation ones, were developed. Using individual elasticities, composite sustainability indices were suggested. Then, utilizing the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) technique, two composite indices, as well as the national variables, are employed to achieve a unique SD efficiency score....

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 12, Issue 4 , 2005 , Pages 437-441 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Adibnazari, S ; Naderi, D ; Shahani, A. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Sharif University of Technology  2005
    Abstract
Different parameters of the asymmetric contact problem between an elastic wedge and a half-plane have been introduced in this paper. These parameters include the distribution of contact pressure and length of contact zones due to frictionless normal loading. For each parameter, the results have been compared with the results of the symmetric problem and numerical solution, which show excellent agreement. The method of approach is a completely analytical method based on singular integral equations. In this method, the boundary conditions of the problem are stated as some singular integrals, and distribution of the contact pressure is specified. Then, with use of the equilibrium equations and...

    Abstract
The ride comfort of high-speed trains passing over railway bridges is studied in this paper. A parametric study is carried out using a time domain model. The effects of some design parameters are investigated such as damping and stiffness of the suspension system and also ballast stiffness. The influence of the track irregularity and train speed on two comfort indicators, namely Sperling's comfort index and the maximum acceleration level are also studied. Two types of railway bridges, a simple girder and an elastically supported bridge are considered. Timoshenko beam theory is used for modelling the rail and bridge and two layers of parallel damped springs in conjunction with a layer of mass...

Interlaminar hygrothermal stresses in laminated plates

    , Article International Journal of Solids and Structures ; Volume 44, Issue 25-26 , 2007 , Pages 8119-8142 ; 00207683 (ISSN) Bahrami, A ; Nosier, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
Within the elasticity formulation the most general displacement field for hygrothermal problems of long laminated composite plates is presented. The equivalent single-layer theories are then employed to determine the global deformation parameters appearing in the displacement fields of general cross-ply, symmetric, and antisymmetric angle-ply laminates under thermal and hygroscopic loadings. Reddy's layerwise theory is subsequently used to determine the local deformation parameters of various displacement fields. An elasticity solution is also developed in order to validate the efficiency and accuracy of the layerwise theory in predicting the interlaminar normal and shear stress...

    , Article Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering ; Volume 197, Issue 49-50 , 15 September , 2008 , Pages 4149-4159 ; 00457825 (ISSN) Ramezani, S ; Naghdabadi, R ; Sohrabpour, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
In this paper, updated Lagrangian finite element formulations for large elastic deformation of micropolar hypo-elastic materials are presented. Using representation theorems of tensor functions, the general form of the constitutive equations for the micropolar hypo-elastic materials model are presented. The finite element formulations are based on the general form of the micropolar hypo-elastic constitutive equations in conjunction with Jaumann rate and a new rate called gyration rate. Gyration rate describes the deformation of the material in view of an observer attached to the micro-structure. An incrementally objective stress and couple stress update procedure is developed and its...
