In this analysis, the dependence of the degree of relative stability for SWCNT interconnects on the geometry of each tube has been acquired. It is shown that, increasing the length and diameter of each tube, SWCNT interconnects become more stable

Optimal placement of PMUs to maintain network observability using a modified BPSO algorithm

    , Article International Journal of Electrical Power and Energy Systems ; Volume 33, Issue 1 , January , 2011 , Pages 28-34 ; 01420615 (ISSN) Hajian, M ; Ranjbar, A. M ; Amraee, T ; Mozafari, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
This paper presents a novel approach to optimal placement of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) for state estimation. At first, an optimal measurement set is determined to achieve full network observability during normal conditions, i.e. no PMU failure or transmission line outage. Then, in order to consider contingency conditions, the derived scheme in normal conditions is modified to maintain network observability after any PMU loss or a single transmission line outage. Observability analysis is carried out using topological observability rules. A new rule is added that can decrease the number of required PMUs for complete system observability. A modified Binary Particle Swarm Optimization...

A novel method for fault location of transmission lines by wide-area voltage measurements considering measurement errors

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid ; Volume 6, Issue 2 , 2015 , Pages 874-884 ; 19493053 (ISSN) Dobakhshari, A. S ; Ranjbar, A. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Smart transmission grids are intended to utilize various measurements for enhanced operation. In particular, synchronized phasor measurements have found many applications in this context. This paper presents a linear weighted least-squares (WLS) method for fault location estimation of transmission lines by synchronized voltage measurements. The measurements may be taken from the faulted line terminals or buses far from the faulted line. The circuit equations of the network are used to find the transfer function between the fault location and each voltage measurement. Next, two auxiliary variables are defined to transform the nonlinear fault location estimation problem into a linear WLS...

Geometrical control of transverse electromagnetic wave propagation in nonuniform microwave superconducting transmission lines

    , Article Journal of Physics: Conference Series, 13 September 2009 through 17 September 2009 ; Volume 234, Issue PART 4 , 2010 ; 17426588 (ISSN) Haghdoust, M ; Mehrany, K ; Fardmanesh, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
It is well known that photonic structures with subwavelength features can be homogenized and thus be accurately approximated by homogeneous yet spatially dispersive structures. This idea is here applied to nonuniform superconducting transmission lines with subwavelength nonuniformities, i.e. subcentimeter features in the microwave regime. A closed form expression is found for the equivalent characteristic impedance and propagation constant of a uniform transmission line that can accurately model the transverse electromagnetic (TEM) propagation within nonuniform superconducting transmission lines with subwavelength inhomogeneities. It is shown that electromagnetic wave propagation, in...

Analysis of terahertz-induced optical phase modulation in a nonlinear dielectric slab

    , Article Progress In Electromagnetics Research M ; Volume 13 , 2010 , Pages 41-51 ; 19378726 (ISSN) Ghattan, Z ; Izadi, S. A ; Shahabadi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
Frequency shift of the spectrum of an incident optical pulse by an intense THz pulse inducing cross-phase modulation (XPM) in a nonlinear dielectric slab is analyzed. The effect is predicted with a high degree of accuracy using the well-known transmission line matrix (TLM) technique. In this research, to model the THz-induced temporal and spatial variation of the dielectric permittivity of the nonlinear dielectric slab, the transmission lines of the TLM method are loaded with open shunt stubs. The parameters of the stubs are modified in accordance with the refractive index variation of the dielectric slab, here ZnTe, induced by the strong THz pulse. The obtained numerical results are...

A method for optimal coordinated insulation design of transmission line

    , Article Australian Journal of Electrical and Electronics Engineering ; Volume 7, Issue 3 , 2010 , Pages 211-223 ; 1448837X (ISSN) Williams, A ; Vakilian, M ; Blackburn, T. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The first step in the accepted methods of overhead transmission line insulation coordination is to specify a reliability criterion, and then based on this constraint the most economic insulation design is sought. While the objective of an optimal insulation design method is to find an insulation design that minimises the total cost (the sum of the installation cost, operational cost and cost of failure), each of the cost components can be determined on a per-year basis taking into account the equipment's lifetimes. In this paper, through application of ATP software and realising the total cost of different transmission line designs, a set of alternative insulation designs using various surge...

    Abstract
A transmission line model, based on the transverse resonance technique, is here introduced to extract a good approximation of guided defect modes in two dimensional photonic crystals. The proposed model simulates the electromagnetic field behavior in the transverse direction. Applying the resonance condition to the proposed circuit model renders a simple and elegant dispersion relation for defect modes in the structure. The obtained results are verified by being compared against numerical results extracted by using rigorous methods

    Abstract
A simple transmission line model is presented to emulate field behavior in a one dimensional metallic grating in TE polarization. The proposed model is based on the fact that pairs of adjacent metallic strips in the structure act as a parallel plate waveguide supporting TE guided modes for low enough frequencies. The effect of fringing fields is also included and a very good approximate model is obtained to simulate metallic gratings in TE polarization

    2010
    Abstract
In this paper, the main discharge region and the plasma on the pre-ionization section in a TEA-CO2 laser are simulated by a distributed RLC electric circuit. The transmission line method is applied to the nonlinear distributed circuit, and it is approximated by a lumped nonlinear RLC circuit. By this method the governing partial differential equations are reduced to a system of ordinary differential equations. The parameters of the plasma in this laser are obtained by using this model. The possible photoionization instability is presented. To discuss the instability of the plasma, the current density perpendicular to the applied electric field is obtained. Furthermore, the electron...

    2010
    Abstract
In this paper, photonic cavities made of point defects in 2-D photonic crystals are modeled by finite-size transmission lines terminated at both ends by appropriate scalar impedances. The proposed model forms a simple transmission line resonator and is demonstrated to be quite beneficial in fast extraction of resonant frequency, quality factor, and mode profile of such photonic cavities. In this manner, an approximate yet quite accurate approach is introduced to characterize the electromagnetic properties of photonic crystal cavities. This method is successfully applied to different structures for both major polarizations and is shown to be as accurate as rigorous numerical methods, viz. the...

Transmission-line model to design matching stage for light coupling into two-dimensional photonic crystals

    , Article Optics Letters ; Volume 35, Issue 2 , 2010 , Pages 115-117 ; 01469592 (ISSN) Miri, M ; Khavasi, A ; Mehrany, K ; Rashidian, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The transmission-line analogy of the planar electromagnetic reflection problem is exploited to obtain a transmission-line model that can be used to design effective, robust, and wideband interference-based matching stages. The proposed model based on a new definition for a scalar impedance is obtained by using the reflection coefficient of the zeroth-order diffracted plane wave outside the photonic crystal. It is shown to be accurate for in-band applications, where the normalized frequency is low enough to ensure that the zeroth-order diffracted plane wave is the most important factor in determining the overall reflection. The frequency limitation of employing the proposed approach is...

    Abstract
To improve power system reliability, it is important to reduce the amount of curtailed load when a contingency occurs. While comparing the conventional methods in load shedding, this paper presents a new approach based on sensitivity between line flows and bus power injections. The proposed method selects a set of buses for alleviating the overloaded transmission lines. The RBTS, IEEE-RTS79, and IEEE 118-bus test systems are used to examine the applicability of the proposed method. The results obtained are compared with those of global optimization and heuristic approach from the amount of curtailed load and the computational burden points of view. It will be shown that the proposed method...

Fuzzy dynamic thermal rating of transmission lines

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery ; Volume 27, Issue 4 , 2012 , Pages 1885-1892 ; 08858977 (ISSN) Shaker, H ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Aminifar, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Dynamic thermal rating (DTR) of transmission system facilities is a way to maximally realize the equipment capacities while not threatening their health. With regards to transmission lines, the allowable current of conductors is forecasted based on the environmental situations expected in some forthcoming time periods. Due to the fact that weather conditions continuously vary, sampling points are very limited against many line spans, and the measurements have an inherent error, uncertainties must be appropriately included in the DTR determination. This paper adopts the fuzzy theory as a strong and simple tool to model uncertainties in the DTR calculation. Since DTR intends to determine the...

Analysis of the power transfer to a nonlinear transmission line

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques ; Volume 65, Issue 11 , 2017 , Pages 4073-4083 ; 00189480 (ISSN) Samizadeh Nikoo, M ; Hashemi, S. M. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The input current of a nonlinear transmission line (NLTL), driven by a step voltage pulse, was analyzed theoretically. As specific results of the analysis, two basic parameters of NLTLs were formulated for the first time: the energy injected to NLTLs and their characteristic impedance. The energy delivered to an NLTL by a square voltage source, with a series resistance of RS, is given by a closed-form formula, which depends on the NLTL parameters and the input pulse characteristics. Considering the importance of the problem of the determining the injected energy content in a wide variety of the different applications of NLTLs, the obtained result will be of great importance, facilitating the...

New soliton solution of a varactor-loaded nonlinear transmission line

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques ; Volume 65, Issue 11 , 2017 , Pages 4084-4092 ; 00189480 (ISSN) Samizadeh Nikoo, M ; Ali Hashemi, S. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The nonlinearity of a nonlinear transmission line (NLTL) may have a variety of forms. The Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation is the governing equation of a highly specific category of NLTLs having a C - V characteristic as C(V) = C0 (1-bV), but works as an approximate model in a general NLTL having any other kinds of nonlinearities. Here, the soliton response of a varactor-loaded NLTL is studied analytically. The presented analysis gives the exact nonlinear partial differential equation (PDE) governing these networks. It is shown that the obtained PDE, being different from the KdV equation, has soliton solutions showing the well-known properties of the KdV solitons. These obtained solitons...

A 40-GHz bandwidth tapered distributed LNA

, Article IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems II: Express Briefs ; 2017 ; 15497747 (ISSN) Nikandish, G ; Medi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this brief, a design technique for tapered distributed low-noise amplifiers (LNAs) is presented. A circuit model is developed for gain and noise analysis of a nonuniform distributed amplifier (DA). It is shown that by optimal tapering of gate and drain transmission lines and transistors, the tapered distributed LNA can provide lower broadband average noise figure (NF) compared to a uniform DA. A proof-of-concept integrated circuit is implemented using a 0.1-μm GaAs pHEMT process. The amplifier provides average gain of 15.2 dB and 3-dB bandwidth of 43.3 GHz. The average NF of 2.3 dB and minimum NF of 2.0 dB are achieved over 2–40 GHz. The chip consumes 55 mA current from a 2-V supply. IEEE...

    , Article IET Microwaves, Antennas and Propagation ; Volume 11, Issue 4 , 2017 , Pages 490-494 ; 17518725 (ISSN) Shirinabadi, H ; Ahmadi Boroujeni, M ; Arbabi, E ; Mohammadpour Aghdam, K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
An efficient and low cost approach to realise a non-planar dual-polarised log-periodic dipole array antenna (LPDA) using printed circuit board technology is proposed which achieves a high bandwidth and operational frequency. The proposed antenna utilises a very short transition from a coaxial cable to a balanced four-conductor transmission line to realise an ultra-wide bandwidth balun and input impedance matching. An analysis of the utilised four-conductor transmission line alongside its comparison to two-conductor transmission line of a planar LPDA is also presented. Two prototypes of the antenna operating over the frequency ranges of 1-13 GHz and 1-18 GHz were designed, fabricated, and...

Transmission capability improvement using wide area monitoring and control

    Abstract
Operation of transmission lines are usually limited by stability limits rather than thermal capacity limits. Thermal limit of transmission lines is a physical limitation of their components and not related with the overall power system characteristics, but stability limits are strictly related with power system characteristics. This paper presents an approach for increasing stability limits using PSS. © 2008 IEEE

Concept of best energy transfer scenario and a true expression for power factor

    Abstract
The best energy transfer scenario (BETS) is a situation under which the optimum transfer of power (or energy) from the electric utility to an electric power consumer is achieved. Such a scenario is important because it is used as a reference point to evaluate how efficient the load operates. The index of power factor (PF) is used to quantify such an efficiency. The closer the PF to unity corresponds to more efficient performance of the load. This paper is to show that the conventional definition of the BETS is inadequate and results in an unfair value for the PF unless the transmission line is perfect and lossless (which is an unrealistic condition). The paper also investigates an...

    Abstract
Dynamic vibration absorbers are used to reduce the undesirable vibrations in many applications such as electrical transmission lines, helicopters, gas turbines, engines, bridges and etc. One type of these absorbers is tunable vibration absorber (TVA) which can act as a semi-active controller. In this paper, by applying a (TVA), chatter vibration is suppressed during boring process in which boring bar is modeled as a cantilever Euler-Bernoulli beam. The optimum specifications of absorber such as spring stiffness, absorber mass and its position can be determined by developing an algorithm based upon mode summation method. Finally, using the SIMULINK Toolbox of MATLAB, the analog simulated...
