    , Article Journal of the Optical Society of America B: Optical Physics ; Volume 38, Issue 3 , 2021 , Pages 953-960 ; 07403224 (ISSN) Rahmanzadeh, M ; Khavasi, A ; Rejaei, B ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Theoretical study of arrays of graphene ribbons is currently of high interest due to its potential application in beam splitters, absorbers, and polarizers. In this paper, an analytical method is presented for diffraction analysis of graphene ribbon arrays. Previous analytical studies were carried out in the regime where the lateral separation between the ribbons is much smaller than the wavelength of the incident wave. As such, they cannot be used to calculate the reflection coefficients of higher diffracted orders. In contrast, the method proposed here can predict the electromagnetic response of graphene ribbon arrays even when the array constant is larger than the wavelength. To reach our...

    Abstract
The insulation lifetime of power cables is determined by several factors. One of the more important of these is the occurrence of partial discharge (PD) at the dielectric. The ability to detect and locate a PD source is limited by attenuation of the high frequency PD pulses as they propagate through the cable. Therefore it is necessary to understand the high frequency response of such cables. Further, to enable reconstruction of PD signals as emitted a viable high frequency model for simulation is needed. This paper presents results of measurements of PD calibration pulse and high frequency sinusoid propagation in HV XLPE cables. In addition to the tests a cable model was developed using the...

    Abstract
SrFe12-xTix/2Zn x/2O19 (x = 0-2.5) powders were synthesized by use of chlorides through co-precipitation method. The obtained powders were then milled by high energy ball mill to crash hard agglomerates and achieve nanoparticles. In order to evaluate microwave absorption versus frequency, composites including ferrite, as a filler, and matrix of polyvinylchloride (PVC) with weight ratio of 70% ferrite were prepared. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and vector network analyzer (VNA) were employed to study the structural, magnetic and microwave absorption properties...

    Abstract
The integral equation technique, in combination with the method of moments, is widely used for treating the electromagnetic scattering from periodic rough surfaces. This method, however, requires the computation of a kernel (a periodic Green's function) that consists of a slowly converging infinite series of conventional Green's functions. To accelerate the convergence of this series, different methods have been proposed in literature. In this paper, we use a complex image (CI) technique to find a closed-form expression for the periodic Green's function, which is then used to analyze the electromagnetic scattering from arbitrary periodic rough surfaces. The resulting CI Green's function...

    Abstract
A transmission line model, based on the transverse resonance technique, is here introduced to extract a good approximation of guided defect modes in two dimensional photonic crystals. The proposed model simulates the electromagnetic field behavior in the transverse direction. Applying the resonance condition to the proposed circuit model renders a simple and elegant dispersion relation for defect modes in the structure. The obtained results are verified by being compared against numerical results extracted by using rigorous methods

    Abstract
Eelectromagnetic analysis of periodic structures is important in the electromagnetic theory. Among them, the electromagnetic wave scattering analysis from rough surfaces is of importance due to both theoretical and practical points of view. For slow variation periodic surfaces the solution can be obtained under the Rayleigh hypothesis in terms of Floquet modes [1]. Integral equation approaches in combination with the method of Moments are among the most frequently used in the solution of scattering problems related to periodic surface due to their flexibility in modeling different geometries [2-3]. Due to slowly convergence of infinite series periodic Green's function, these methods need...

Interface effects on the electromagnetic radiation emanating from an embedded piezoelectric nano-fiber incident upon by SH-waves

    , Article Wave Motion ; Volume 94 , April , 2020 Taheri Jam, M ; Shodja, H. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2020
    Abstract
The multiphysics process of the electromagnetic (EM) radiation induced from an embedded nanofiber scatterer subjected to SH-waves is of interest. By discarding the commonly employed electroquasistatic approximation, the fully-coupled elastodynamics and Maxwell's equations have been solved simultaneously within the mathematical framework of piezoelectric surface elasticity theory. Certain subtleties regarding the introduced interface characteristic lengths that make the examination of the size effect on the EM radiated power, scattering cross section, fundamental resonance frequency, and distribution of the magnetic field possible will be discussed. The obtained results can be helpful for...

    Abstract
Recently, huge attention has been drawn to improve optical sensing devices based on photonic resonators in the presence of graphene. In this paper, based on the transfer matrix approach and TE polarization of the incident electromagnetic waves, we numerically evaluate the transmission and reflection spectra for one-dimensional photonic resonators and surface plasmon resonances with strained graphene, respectively. We proved that a relatively small strain field in graphene can modulate linearly polarized resonant modes within the photonic bandgap of the defective crystal. Moreover, we study the strain effects on the surface plasmon resonances created by the evanescent wave technique at the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Monem Haghdoust, Zahra (Author) ; Mehrany, Khashayar (Supervisor) ; Fardmanesh, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nonuniform superconducting microstrip transmission lines in microwave regime have been investigated. Nonuniform transmission lines provide the capability of controlling line parameters. Photonic structures with subwavelength features can be homogenized and thus be accurately approximated by homogeneous yet spatially dispersive structures. This idea is here applied to nonuniform superconducting transmission lines with subwavelength nonuniformities, i.e. subcentimeter features in the microwave regime. This modelling is quite useful in geometrical and optical control of quasi-TEM wave propagation and dispersion engineering along microwave superconducting lines. This approach has applications...

Increasing the Accuracy of Vectorial Gaussian Beam Tracing in a Short Urban Link Using Hybrid Methods

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Alavi Rad, Mohammad (Author) ; Shishegar, Amir Ahmad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Recently, there has been a great interest toward site–specific modeling of outdoor radio wave propagation. Wave propagation in very large environments compared to a wavelength builds up an important category of electromagnetic wave propagation problems which occurs in
versatile criteria from optical devices to long wireless microwave links. Well-known methods such as different ray tracing schemes used in these problems suffer from long execution time and great amount of needed memory. A new method has been proposed in this thesis to overcome such difficulties for high frequency wave propagation in large scale problems. The proposed method is based on tracing 3D vectorial Gaussian beam....

We present an analytical model based on telegraphers’ equations in order to obtain line propagation characteristics; characteristic impedance, propagation constant, and group velocity. The accuracy of analysis in normal and superconducting lines is evaluated by measurement and electromagnetic...

In-Vivo Body Thermometry Using Electromagnetic Waves

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shahsavari, Mohammad (Author) ; Shishegar, Amir Ahmad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The purpose of this study is to estimate the temperature distribution of the internal body organs using electromagnetic waves. When the external electromagnetic field propagates in biological tissues under a process like microwave hyperthermia, the temperature of the tissue at the field concentration area increases. Due to temperature and frequency dependence of the tissue dielectric, the tissue permittivity changes; thus, the electric field scattered by the tissue changes. Therefore, by measuring the field scattered from the object, dielectric changes of the tissue structure can be calculated. Since the biological tissues’ dielectric coefficient at frequencies lower than 2GHz is linear,...

Design of Optimum Nanoantenna Arrays for Detection Applications

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Armand, Mohammad Javad (Author) ; Rashidian, Bijan (Supervisor) ; Shahmansouri, Afsaneh (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
The main goal of this thesis is introducing a method to design optimum nanoantenna arrays for detection applications. The proposed method is based on the multiple-scattering T-matrix in connection with the Ewald method. The formulation is systematic, quite general, easily traceable, and fast. Its high speed of analysis makes it well suited to design optimizations. In particular, we calculate multiple-scattering terms of the T-matrix formulation with the Ewald method. To the best of our knowledge no report on derivation of the T-matrix of a 3D (or even 2D) periodic array from the T-matrix of the isolated element, based on Ewald method has been reported before. Finally, a software has been...

    Anderson Localization of Electromagnetic Waves

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Sheikhan Soudani, Amene (Author) ; Rahimi Tabar, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The electrons scatter by the impurities during propagation through the media and become localized by increasing the impurities. So the metal insulator transition occurs. This phenomenon was first proposed by W. Anderson and is known as Anderson Localization. In this thesis the Anderson localization of electromagnetic waves is investigated. The disordered media with random dielectric constant is studied by considering Maxwell’s equations. There are different numerical methods to study this phenomenon such as transfer matrix method and level statistics we have used in this thesis. In three dimension, different scaling behavior shows the phase transition from localized states to extended states...

Site-Specific Indoor Propagation Modeling Using Ray Tracing Method for 6g Wireless Communications

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sheybani, Sina (Author) ; Shishegar, Amir Ahmad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This thesis explores the feasibility of implementing terahertz wireless communication in indoor environments (as suggested in 6G) by modeling the propagation of terahertz band waves. The roughness of indoor surfaces at the terahertz frequencies is investigated through the detailed examination of the electromagnetic fields scattered from these surfaces using the method of moments (MoM). To account for the random roughness of these surfaces, the Monte Carlo method is utilized, generating surfaces with Gaussian statistical distribution, and obtaining the scattered electromagnetic fields using MoM. The final results represent an average of all simulated scenarios. In addition, the study...

Plasmonic fractals: Ultrabroadband light trapping in thin film solar cells by a Sierpinski nanocarpet

    , Article Optical and Quantum Electronics ; Vol. 46, issue. 6 , 2014 , pp. 751-757 ; ISSN: 03068919 Kazerooni, H ; Khavasi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Plasmonic Sierpinski nanocarpet as back structure for a thin film Si solar cell is investigated. We demonstrate that ultra-broadband light trapping can be obtained by placing square metallic nanoridges with Sierpinski pattern on the back contact of the thin film solar cell. The multiple-scale plasmonic fractal structure allows excitation of localized surface plasmons and surface plasmon polaritons in multiple wavelengths leading to obvious absorption enhancements in a wide frequency range. Full wave simulations show that 109 % increase of the short-circuit current density for a 200 nm thick solar cell, is achievable by the proposed fractal back structure. The amount of light absorbed in the...

A full discussion involving the couplings between plasmon resonance in nanodisks, surface plasmon polaritons on the interfaces of metallic film, and different diffractive grating orders that contribute in the couplings will be presented. The large difference between the plasmon behavior of the nanodisk array alone and nanodisk array in the presence of nanohole...

    Abstract
Bluetooth headsets are one of the popular accessories of mobile phones because of their convenience. It is necessary to assess the impact of electromagnetic waves on the human head when a person is using a headset. In this paper different scenarios closely modeling the situations that a subject may use the headset in real life are simulated. Simulations are performed for two types of materials commonly used to manufacture the headsets, namely silicone and acetal, and for two different orientation angle of the headset on the ear. Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) and path loss values are then obtained for two different environments, the open space and inside a car. SEMCAD-X software is used as a...

    Abstract
Here, an in-depth study of a novel electro-optic phenomenon suggested earlier in optical waveguides, referred to as the conducting interfaces, is carried out. It is shown that it would be possible to achieve a very strong optical modulation effect in slab waveguides fabricated on the standard III-V InAlGaAs compound platform. The electro-optic effect is obtained by controlling the density and population of the electron and hole states in the well layer. The additional phase shift contributed to the reflection phase of the guided electromagnetic wave constitutes an ultrastrong source of optical modulation and phase control. It is estimated that a Mach-Zhender configuration based on this...
