    Abstract
Data variety is one of the most important features of Big Data. Data variety is the result of aggregating data from multiple sources and uneven distribution of data. This feature of Big Data causes high variation in the consumption of processing resources such as CPU consumption. This issue has been overlooked in previous works. To overcome the mentioned problem, in the present work, we used Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS) to reduce the energy consumption of computation. To this goal, we consider two types of deadlines as our constraint. Before applying the DVFS technique to computer nodes, we estimate the processing time and the frequency needed to meet the deadline. In the...

    , Article Indian Journal of Science and Technology ; Vol. 7, issue. 3 , 2014 , p. 276-281 Malekpour, A ; Ejlali, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Decimal arithmetic has gained intensive attention in the last decade. Most commercial, financial, scientific, and internet-based applications need their data to be precise, while binary number system loses preciseness in some cases. The latency and area are two major factors in existing research works on decimal multiplication. However, energy/power consumption is another important factor in today's digital systems. Hence, in this paper we proposed a new low power decimal adder based on prediction technique for decreasing the energy/power consumption of parallel decimal multiplication and show its impacts on one of the well-known parallel decimal multipliers architecture. Our observations...

The Internet of Things is a new concept in the world of information and communication technology, in which for each being (whether it be a human, an animal or an object), the possibility of sending and receiving data through communication networks such as the Internet or Intranet is provided. Wireless sensors have limited energy resources due to their use of batteries in supplying energy, and since battery replacement in these sensors is not usually feasible, the longevity of wireless sensor networks is limited. Therefore, reducing the energy consumption of the used sensors in IoT networks to increase the network lifetime is one of the crucial challenges and parameters in such networks. In...

Consistency Aware Energy Management in Energy Harvesting Embedded Systems with Non-Volatile Memory

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Abbasinia, Mohammad (Author) ; Ejlali, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nowadays, energy harvesting systems are becoming a promising alternative to battery-embedded systems, as they are more environmentally and they have more life span. The energy extracted from the environment is often limited and unpredictable. A power outage leads to destroying the data in volatile memory. So, the energy harvesting system should execute the program from scratch. The emerging nonvolatile technologies could omit the problem, as mentioned earlier. However, they have high energy consumption and access latency. Conventional methods, which use volatile-nonvolatile memories in battery-embedded systems, are not suitable for energy harvesting systems. Since, a power outage might cause...

    Abstract
An approach to assess feasibility and determine the feasible range of operating parameters for double-feed reactive distillation columns is put forward. It is based on the combination of analysis of the pinch point maps for the middle-section in compositional space and an efficient shortcut design method. The existence of the liming bounds on operating parameters is observed. The methodology is illustrated by the production of methyl acetate and ethyl acetate. The analysis provides an efficient method to identify the most promising candidates of double feed reactive distillation columns and to study the design flexibility in terms of operating parameters. This is an abstract of a paper...

    Abstract
Topology is an important network attribute that greatly affects the power, performance, cost, and design time/effort of NoCs. In this paper, we propose a novel NoC architecture that can exploit the benefits of both application-specific and regular NoC topologies. To this end, a subset of NoC links bypass the router pipeline stages and directly connect remotely located nodes. This results in an NoC which holds both fixed connections between adjacent nodes and long connections virtually connecting non-adjacent nodes. These shortcut paths are constructed at run-time by employing a simple and fast mechanism composed of two processes: on-chip traffic monitoring and path reconfiguration. The...

    Abstract
Recently, IoT has been massively applied in different areas of human life. Meanwhile, in many of the IoT applications, e.g., the remote patient health-care monitoring systems, the reliability of communications, and the consumed energy in IoT devices, which are mostly battery-operated, are very challenging. Since IoT devices are typically operated in lossy environments, providing a reliable transmission for the packets imposes a noticeable amount of energy consumption. In addition, the runtime movement of the IoT devices in mobile networks further intensifies these issues. Therefore, the applied policies in the IPv6 RPL as the standard routing mechanism in IoT networks, play an important role...

A Control Theoretic Technique for Energy Management in Multi-core Embedded Systems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Abbasnia Tehrani, Mojtaba (Author) ; Ejlali, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Since multi-core processors have become a primary trend in processor development, new scheduling algorithms are needed to minimize power consumption while achieving the desired timeliness guarantees for multi-core real-time embedded systems. Although various power/energy efficient scheduling algorithms have recently been proposed, existing studies may have degraded run-time performance in terms of power/energy efficiency and real-time guarantees when applied to real-time embedded systems with uncertain execution time. Moreover, these algorithms are only provided for a specific set of tasks, while many industrial applications with real-time demands are composed of mixed sets of tasks with a...

Deep Reinforcement Learning for Building Climate Control Using Weather Forecast Data

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Honari Latifpour, Ehsan (Author) ; Rezaeizadeh, Amin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Buildings account for more than 30% of the world’s total energy consumption. Among building end-uses, air conditioning and in particular cooling systems have a major share of more than 50%. Therefore, design of optimal controllers for AC systems has become increasingly important. Classical and model-free control methods typically lack the ability to optimize energy consumption. On the other hand, model-based optimal control methods rely on precise modeling, which is difficult to acquire due to the complexity of the AC system dynamics. In recent years, deep reinforcement learning has become a popular choice for optimal control of systems with complex dynamics. In this thesis, a deep...

Estimating Income Elasticity of Household Energy Using the Quantile Regression Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tahavori, Mohammad Sajad (Author) ; Madanizadeh, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Abstract In this study, by using panel instrumental variable quantile regression method (IVQP) and household budget data during the years 2011-2018, income elasticity of Housing energy has been estimated at different levels of energy expenditure. This method helps to study the whole energy expenditure distribution instead of focusing on the average effects. The study results show that income elasticity has a downward trend with increasing energy consumption quantiles. In other words, households with higher consumption have less income elasticity, so that the income elasticity is estimated for 10, 90 percentage, 0.47, and 0.32 quantiles, respectively. Also, in another part of the research,...
