    Abstract
The amount of residual oil trapped in the matrix of a fractured reservoir after water drive, either natural water drive or water injection, depends on the wettability of the matrix rocks. Gas oil gravity drainage (GOGD) has been proposed as the tertiary oil recovery process for this type of oil reservoir. The current work focuses on experimental investigation of tertiary GOGD in fractured porous media under different types of matrix wettability. Results of a set of experiments performed in artificial porous media composed of sand packs and glass beads of different wettability have been used to check the GOGD rate and the ultimate oil recovery for previously waterflooded models. A novel...

    , Article Desalination ; Volume 250, Issue 2 , 2010 , Pages 598-600 ; 00119164 (ISSN) Soltani, S ; Mowla, D ; Vossoughi, M ; Hesampour, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this study a membrane bioreactor (MBR) has been studied experimentally for the treatment of oil field wastewater (produced water). This type of wastewater is characterised with relativity moderate to high amount of salt and oil. The normal bacteria which are growing in conventional activated sludge and MBR cannot withstand at these adverse conditions, therefore it is necessary to be adapted. In this study, different samples from sea sediment in Bushehr (south of Iran) were analysed and different groups of bacteria were isolated and adapted for surveying under high salinity conditions. The performance and efficiency of these bacteria in the degradation of model oil has been studied. The...

    , Article Archive of Applied Mechanics ; Volume 79, Issue 12 , 2009 , Pages 1127-1143 ; 09391533 (ISSN) Hajilouy Benisi, A ; Rad, M ; Shahhosseini, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper presents numerical and experimental investigation of the performance and internal flow field characteristics of twin-entry radial inflow turbines at full and extreme partial admission conditions. The turbine is tested on a turbocharger test facility, which was developed for small and medium size turbochargers. Experimental results show that the lowest efficiency corresponds to extreme conditions. Therefore, flow field analyzing is employed to consider these conditions. The flow pattern in the volute and impeller of a twin-entry turbine is analyzed using an in-house fully three-dimensional viscous flow solver. The computational performance results are compared with the experimental...

    Abstract
In this investigation, the behavior of the interface between polymer concrete and sand was studied. For this purpose, two sets of interface direct shear tests (over 40 tests) were conducted on the polymer concrete and sand interface. Moreover, two sets of tests (over 30 tests) were performed on the cement concrete and sand interface for comparison. Based on the experiments, the shear stress versus tangential displacement curves at different normal stresses, the interface friction angles, and the adhesion were obtained for each interface. Then, three different constitutive models proposed for interfaces were used to predict the observed response. Finally, after a quantitative comparison of...

    Abstract
In drilling industry, barite particles settling and barite sag as a major problem can potentially impose significant operational issues. Static conditions, in which well undergoes an extended shut-in period, could occur during different drilling and completion operations such fishing operation, tripping, and logging. Despite its importance, such phenomenon is not well understood yet. To avoid issues related to barite settlement and barite sag, a good understanding of the impact of different drilling parameters on barite settlement and sag phenomenon is required. Recently, the mathematical formulation and modeling of settlement and sag processes have gained more attention. In order to better...

    Abstract
In this paper, the performance of a turbocharger twin-entry radial inflow turbine is investigated analytically and experimentally under steady state, full and partial admission conditions. In this modeling, the mass flow rate, pressure ratio and efficiency of the turbine are assumed unknown. The turbine geometry and the inlet total pressure and temperature are known, hence, the turbine performance characteristics can be obtained. In the turbocharger laboratory, performance characteristics of the turbine are determined, measuring the main parameters for various operating conditions. Comparing the model and experimental results shows good agreement. Also, considering the effect of test...

    Abstract
This study aims to investigate the role of fluid-fluid interactions during low salinity water flooding, using crude oil from an Iranian oil reservoir. To minimize the effects of mineral heterogeneity and wettability alteration, a synthetic sintered glass core was utilized and all coreflooding experiments were performed at low temperatures without any aging process. The effect of fluid-fluid interactions were investigated in both secondary and tertiary injection modes. pH measurements as well as UV-Vis spectroscopy and interfacial tension (IFT) analysis were performed on the effluent brine samples. Results: show that fluid-fluid interactions, mainly the dissolution of crude oil polar...

Response of a novel beam-to-column/brace-to-frame connection to monotonic and cyclic shear loading

, Article Proceedings of the International Conference on Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering - OMAE, 9 June 2008 through 13 June 2008, Berlin ; Volume 2 , 2008 , Pages 609-618 ; 9780791848197 (ISBN) Khonsari, V ; England, G. L ; Abazarsa, F ; Ocean, Offshore, and Arctic Engineering Division; ASME ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
A new universal structural joint was developed. While in bending it has a high rotational capacity, which can be accompanied by large bending stiffness and strength, in shear, it also has a very high shear deformation capacity, which can again be accompanied with large shear stiffness and strength. While the former characteristic makes it a good candidate for being used as a beam-to-column joint, the latter makes it highly applicable in connecting braces of a braced frame to the frame members. The experimental study carried out previously on this joint, concentrated on the performance of its steel specimens under 'monotonie' shear loading as well as that of its aluminium specimens under both...

    Abstract
Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are one of the preferred candidates for reinforcing polymeric nanobiocomposites, such as acrylic bone type of cement. In this study, at first, bulk samples of the reinforced polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) matrix were prepared with 0.1, 0.25, and 0.5 wt per wt% of MWCNTs by the casting method. Tensile and three-point bending tests were performed to determine the essential mechanical properties of bone cement, such as tensile and bending strengths. The tensile fracture surfaces were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The commercial software (Abaqus) was used to conduct finite element analysis (FEA) by constructing a representative volume...

This work concerns the experimental investigation of surfactant alternating CO 2 injection in carbonate rocks. The core samples provided from a low-temperature fractured light oil reservoir, located in southwest Iran. The experiments were designed to observe the effect of CO 2-foam injection on gas mobility and oil recovery at different surfactant concentrations. The core samples were initially saturated with synthetic/field brine, 5,000 ppm, and then flooded with live oil to reach connate water saturation at reservoir condition, 115F and 1,700 psia. The commercial surfactant used was sodium lauryl sulfate as an anionic surfactant. The results of this work, along with field-scale simulation...

Thermodynamic modeling for hydrogen production from biomass and evaluation of biomass energy technologies

    , Article Biotechniques for Air Pollution Control - Proceedings of the 3rd International Congress on Biotechniques for Air Pollution Control, 28 September 2009 through 30 September 2009, Delft ; 2010 , Pages 269-273 ; 9780415582704 (ISBN) Hemmati, Sh ; Saboohi, Y ; Hashemi, N ; Vossoughi, M ; Pazuki, G. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
Compared with fossil fuel, biomass is a clean energy with zero CO 2 emission, because CO 2 is fixed by photosynthesis during biomass growth and released again during utilization. Due to its low energy density, direct use of biomass is not convenient. Thus, it is necessary to convert biomass to fuel gas, such as hydrogen, which can be used cleanly and highly efficiently in fuel cell. Thermo-chemical gasification is likely to be the most cost-effective conversion process and it is promising technology for renewable hydrogen production by utilizing biomass. Biomass gasification produces a mixture of gases (mainly consisting of H 2, CO, CO 2, CH 4 and higher hydrocarbons), solids (char) and...

Biomechanical analysis for the study of muscle contributions to support load carrying

    , Article Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part C: Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science ; Volume 224, Issue 6 , 2010 , Pages 1287-1298 ; 09544062 (ISSN) Selk Ghafari, A ; Meghdari, A ; Vossoughi, G. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Professional Engineering Publishing  2010
    Abstract
The objective of this study was to quantify individual muscle function differences between level walking and backpack load carriage at the same speed by using a muscle-actuated forward dynamics simulation. As experimental investigations have revealed that backpack loads of up to 64 per cent of an individual's body mass have little effect on the sagittal plane gait kinema-tics, further biomechanical analyses are necessary to investigate the contributions of individual muscle coordination strategies to achieve a given motor task by mechanical power generation, absorption, and transference to each body segment. A biomechanical framework consisting of a musculoskeletal model actuated by 18...
