Improving Throughput and Secrecy Throughput Performance in Wireless Powered Communication Networks

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Rezaei Estakhrooeieh, Roohollah (Author) ; Pakravan, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In wireless powered communication networks (WPCNs), wireless nodes are charged via an access point. In these networks, an access point transfers power to the nodes, and then, the nodes use the received power to transmit their information to the access point. Due to the wireless transmission of the information, eavesdropping of it is an important vulnerability in these networks. The conventional method to resolve this security problem is using cryptography algorithms. However, this method needs key management and complex encryption algorithms to be used by the nodes, which may not be applicable. Physical layer security (PLS), which uses the channel characteristics, is a more suitable way to...

Lexicographic max-min approach for an integrated vendor-managed inventory problem

    , Article Knowledge-Based Systems ; Vol. 59 , 2014 , pp. 58-65 ; ISSN: 09507051 Pasandideh, S. H. R ; Niaki, S. T. A ; Niknamfar, A. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Simultaneous reductions in inventory of raw materials, work-in-process, and finished items have recently become a major focus in supply chain management. Vendor-managed inventory is a well-known practice in supply chain collaborations, in which manufacturer manages inventory at the retailer and decides about the time and replenishment. In this paper, an integrated vendor-managed inventory model is presented for a two-level supply chain structured as a single capacitated manufacturer at the first level and multiple retailers at the second level. Manufacturer produces different products where demands are assumed decreasing functions of retail prices. In this chain, both the manufacturer and...

A new cost function for game theoretic SIR-based power control algorithms

    , Article IWCMC 2011 - 7th International Wireless Communications and Mobile Computing Conference, 4 July 2011 through 8 July 2011 ; July , 2011 , Pages 1147-1151 ; 9781424495399 (ISBN) Pasandshanjani, E ; Khalaj, B. H ; Moghaddam, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
In this paper, we introduce a new cost function for SIR-Based uplink power control algorithms that takes into account transmission power level as well as target Signal-to-Interference Ratio (SIR) deviation. Existence of Nash equilibrium point, its uniqueness and the algorithm convergence are proved in the framework of so-called standard power control schemes. As shown through simulations, the proposed method results in significant transmit power reduction while achieving almost the same average SIR level. In addition, it is shown that the new scheme results in improved overall network fairness in comparison with another algorithm

A Buchi automata based model checking framework for reo connectors

    , Article Proceedings of the ACM Symposium on Applied Computing, 26 March 2012 through 30 March 2012 ; March , 2012 , Pages 1536-1543 ; 9781450308571 (ISBN) Keshishzadeh, S ; Izadi, M ; Movaghar, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Reo is an exogenous coordination language for synchronizing components participating in a component-based system. In this paper we provide a verification framework for model checking of Reo connectors. The proposed framework applies an extension of Büchi automata as the operational semantic model for Reo connectors and a record-based extension of linear time temporal logic (LTL) for expressing properties. Several aspects of Reo connectors, specially synchronization, context dependencies and fairness constraints, are addressed by this model checker due to its supported underlying model. The main ideas behind this implementation are to introduce a symbolic representation for the main elements...

Prevention of distribution network overvoltage by adaptive droop-based active and reactive power control of PV systems

    , Article Electric Power Systems Research ; Volume 133 , 2016 , Pages 313-327 ; 03787796 (ISSN) Ghasemi, M. A ; Parniani, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Proliferation of grid-connected photovoltaic systems (PVSs) causes technical problems due to their variable and non-dispatchable generated power. High penetration of PVS in distribution networks can result in overvoltage in some operating conditions. Although this situation occurs rarely, it limits the installed capacity of PVS. In this paper, adaptive droop-based control algorithms are presented to regulate active and reactive power of PVS, with the objectives of loss minimization and increasing the PVS capacity installation without unallowable overvoltage. Operating voltage range of the PVS is divided into several intervals, and a specific control algorithm is presented for each of them....

Improving coverage-capacity tradeoff and power consumption of TDMA-CDMA by coverage-dependent timeslot allocation

    , Article 4th IEEE International Conference on Wireless and Mobile Computing, Networking and Communication, WiMob 2008, Avignon, 12 October 2008 through 14 October 2008 ; 2008 , Pages 266-271 ; 9780769533933 (ISBN) Nasrabadi, H ; Ashtiani, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
Cellular CDMA systems have to trade user capacity to increase cell coverage. Moreover, coverage of CDMA is uplink-limited because uplink channels are not orthogonal and transmit powers of mobile stations are limited. In this paper, we propose a coverage-dependent dynamic channel allocation (DCA) method for TDMA-CDMA. In this method, different uplink timeslots have different level of coverage-capacity tradeoff, i.e., Non-Homogeneous Coverage-Capacity Tradeoff (NHCCT). This method reduces uplink power consumption and improves coverage-capacity tradeoff, compared to Load Balancing DCA method. Finally, we verify our approach by numerical analysis and simulation. © 2008 IEEE

Adaptive modulation technique for amplify & forward cooperative diversity and fairness analysis

    , Article 2008 International Conference on Telecommunications, ICT, St. Petersburg, 16 June 2008 through 19 June 2008 ; October , 2008 ; 9781424420360 (ISBN) Yazdian, E ; Pakravan, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
In recent years, cooperative diversity techniques have gained increased attention as a new method to combat degrading channel effects. Cooperation among two or more single antenna users generates a virtual diverse multiple-antenna transmission system in the wireless network. In this paper, we propose a scheme to improve the spectral efficiency of the Amplify and Forward system and investigate the application of adaptive modulation concept to the performance of cooperative techniques. We consider the adaptation of rate and power allocation with MQAM modulation and study the performance of Amplify & Forward scenarios in Rayleigh fading channels. We compare this system with its comparable...

    Abstract
In this paper, we propose efficient wireless power transfer (WPT) policies for various practical scenarios in wirelessly powered communication networks (WPCNs). First, we consider WPT from an energy access point (E-AP) to multiple energy receivers (E-Rs). We formulate the problem of maximizing the total average received power of the E-Rs subject to power constraints of the E-AP, which is a non-convex stochastic optimization problem. Using eigenvalue decomposition techniques, we derive a closed-form expression for the optimal policy, which requires the distribution of the channel state information (CSI) in the network. We then propose a near-optimal policy that does not require this knowledge...

Saturated hydraulic conductivity of problematic soils measured by a newly developed low-compliance triaxial permeameter

    , Article Engineering Geology ; Volume 278 , 2020 Sadeghi, H ; AliPanahi, P ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2020
    Abstract
Research on the reliable characterization of saturated permeability has received great yet necessary attention globally. However, most studies were carried out on soils with a volumetric tendency being almost insensitive to water saturation or at least with this hidden assumption. This is clearly not the case when dealing with the two broad categories of problematic soils, including collapsible and expansive soils. As confirmed by previous research, at least one-fifth of the planet comprises of these soils with a relatively fair distribution. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to introduce a low-compliance double cell/burette permeameter to track all volumetric changes during the...

On the physical layer security of the cooperative rate-splitting-aided downlink in UAV networks

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security ; Volume 16 , 2021 , Pages 5018-5033 ; 15566013 (ISSN) Bastami, H ; Letafati, M ; Moradikia, M ; Abdelhadi, A ; Behroozi, H ; Hanzo, L ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have found compelling applications in intelligent logistics, search and rescue as well as in air-borne Base Station (BS). However, their communications are prone to both channel errors and eavesdropping. Hence, we investigate the max-min secrecy fairness of UAV-aided cellular networks, in which Cooperative Rate-Splitting (CRS) aided downlink transmissions are employed by each multi-antenna UAV Base Station (UAV-BS) to safeguard the downlink of a two-user Multi-Input Single-Output (MISO) system against an external multi-antenna Eavesdropper ( Eve ). Realistically, only Imperfect Channel State Information (ICSI) is assumed to be available at the transmitter....

    Abstract
Here, a fuzzy multi-period multi-echelon multi-objective mixed-integer non-linear programming (MOMINLP) model is considered for a sustainable multi-product multi-site multi-distribution multi-customer supply chain in forward flow having multi-centers for collecting, checking, repairing and decomposing and multi-disposal centers in the reverse flow. Minimizing the total cost of the closed-loop supply chain (CLSC), elevating the customer satisfaction degrees, minimizing the total waiting time, minimizing the manufacturing site greenhouse gases and minimizing the CO2 emissions from vehicles are considered as the objective functions. Furthermore, integration of strategic decisions of flow...

A novel contention window control scheme for IEEE 802.11 WLANs

    , Article IETE Technical Review (Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers, India) ; Volume 29, Issue 3 , 2012 , Pages 202-212 ; 02564602 (ISSN) Balador, A ; Movaghar, A ; Jabbehdari, S ; Kanellopoulos, D ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
In the IEEE 802.11 standard, network nodes experiencing collisions on the shared medium need a mechanism that can prevent collisions and improve the throughput. Furthermore, a backoff mechanism is used that uniformly selects a random period of time from the contention window (cw) that is dynamically controlled by the Binary Exponential Backoff (BEB) algorithm. Prior research has proved that the BEB scheme suffers from a fairness problem and low throughput, especially under high traffic load. In this paper, we present a new backoff control mechanism that is used with the IEEE 802.11 distributed coordination function (DCF). In particular, we propose a dynamic, deterministic contention window...

Quality of service provisioning in optical CDMA packet networks

    , Article Journal of Optical Communications and Networking ; Volume 2, Issue 5 , 2010 , Pages 283-292 ; 19430620 (ISSN) Khaleghi, S ; Pakravan, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
An enhanced media access control (MAC) layer protocol that uses the signaling method benefits of the physical layer in order to provide different levels of quality to different users in optical code-division multiple-access (OCDMA) packet networks is presented. In the proposed network architecture the users are categorized into two classes of service, one having a higher quality level and the other having a lower quality level. Users of each class transmit at the same power level and different from the other classes users. Also, the MAC of each user estimates the amount of interference on the channel and adjusts the packet transmissions time to improve network performance. Through simulation...

A modified 802.11-based MAC scheme to assure fair access for vehicle-to-roadside communications

    , Article Computer Communications ; Volume 31, Issue 12 , 30 July , 2008 , Pages 2898-2906 ; 01403664 (ISSN) Karamad, E ; Ashtiani, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANets) are special cases of mobile ad hoc networks (MANets) in which the mobility pattern is very different. Actually, the topology of the network in VANets changes more often and the variance of speeds is high. Such characteristics lead to fairness problem in VANets, considered in this paper. In fact, vehicles with different speeds have their different limited time to communicate with an access point (AP). This attribute adversely affects the chance of a fast moving vehicle in communicating with the access point. We propose a modified 802.11 DCF channel access scheme as a solution to the problem. The proposed scheme adjusts the probability of transmission at a...
