    Abstract
This article presents a multi-scale progressive micro-mechanical fatigue model. The model employs fundamental equation of the kinetic theory of fracture to calculate damage parameters of both fiber and matrix during cyclic loading. In order to adapt the equation, required material coefficients of the constituents can be achieved from fatigue test results of longitudinal and transverse unidirectional composites, only. Sharing stress capacities of fiber and matrix are determined using a modified progressive micro-mechanical bridging model in the presence of damage. The damage parameters in the constituents are calculated employing two different equivalent scalars. However, during sinusoidal...

    Abstract
The effect of nut geometry, curved spring washer and a sealing material (Teflon tape) on the fatigue life of M12 and M16 ISO bolts was investigated. This was accompanied by the study of the axial and bending stress distribution in threads by numerical simulation of bolt and nut connections using the finite-element method. The experimental results showed that the highest fatigue life is achieved for a slotted tapered nut. The presence of a spring washer also increases the fatigue life, providing that the correct tightening torque is applied to produce a pretension in the bolt. The use of Teflon tape as a filling material between engaging threads of the bolt and nut is shown to significantly...

    , Article Materials Science and Engineering A ; Volume 525, Issue 1-2 , 2009 , Pages 159-165 ; 09215093 (ISSN) Bakhtiari, R ; Ekrami, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
4340 steel bars were austenitized at 850 °C for 1 h followed by heating at 700 °C for 90 min and quenching into a salt bath at the temperature range of 300-450 °C for 1 h to obtain dual structures with 34 vol.% fraction ferrite and various bainite morphologies. SEM studies showed that by increasing the austempering temperature, bainite morphology varies from lower to upper bainite. Tensile, impact and hardness tests revealed that increasing the austempering temperature from 300 to 400 °C leads to a reduction in yield and ultimate tensile strength, hardness, uniform and total elongation and impact energy. But in dual phase steel produced by austempering at 450 °C, yield and tensile strength...

    , Article Materials and Design ; Vol. 53, issue , 2014 , pp. 639-644 ; ISSN: 02613069 Azadi, M ; Farrahi, G. H ; Winter, G ; Eichlseder, W ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In the present paper, thermo-mechanical fatigue (TMF) and low cycle fatigue (LCF) or isothermal fatigue (IF) lifetimes of a cast magnesium alloy (the AZ91 alloy) were studied. In addition to a heat treatment process (T6), several rare elements were added to the alloy to improve the material strength in the first step. Then, the cyclic behavior of the AZ91 was investigated. For this objective, strain-controlled tension-compression fatigue tests were carried out. The temperature varied between 50 and 200. °C in the out-of-phase (OP) TMF tests. The constraint factor which was defined as the ratio of the mechanical strain to the thermal strain, was set to 75%, 100% and 125%. For LCF tests,...

Stress–strain time-dependent behavior of A356.0 aluminum alloy subjected to cyclic thermal and mechanical loadings

    , Article Mechanics of Time-Dependent Materials ; Vol. 18, issue. 3 , 2014 , p. 475-491 Farrahi, G. H ; Ghodrati, M ; Azadi, M ; Rezvani Rad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This article presents the cyclic behavior of the A356.0 aluminum alloy under low-cycle fatigue (or isothermal) and thermo-mechanical fatigue loadings. Since the thermo-mechanical fatigue (TMF) test is time consuming and has high costs in comparison to low-cycle fatigue (LCF) tests, the purpose of this research is to use LCF test results to predict the TMF behavior of the material. A time-independent model, considering the combined nonlinear isotropic/kinematic hardening law, was used to predict the TMF behavior of the material. Material constants of this model were calibrated based on room-temperature and high-temperature low-cycle fatigue tests. The nonlinear isotropic/kinematic hardening...

    Abstract
In the present paper, an improvement in high temperature fatigue properties of the AZ91 magnesium alloy with rare earth elements has been obtained by a typical heat treatment, denoted by T6. For this objective, out-of-phase thermo-mechanical fatigue, room temperature and high temperature low cycle fatigue tests are performed to compare lifetimes. Several rare earth elements are initially added to the AZ91 alloy during a gravity casting process in permanent molds. Also, the type of the heat treatment is examined. Results of specimens with only the solution (the T4 heat treatment) and the solution with the ageing process (the T6 heat treatment) are compared under isothermal fatigue loadings....

    Abstract
In this study, fatigue, corrosion fatigue and electrochemical behaviors of butt-welded A106-B steel pipes were investigated. These pipes were subjected to mechanical and thermal cyclic stresses due to the internal pressure fluctuations and cooling-heating cycles. Residual stress measurements were carried out for three different depths through the thickness and were correlated to the microstructural observations and microhardness measurements. Results showed that the maximum tensile residual stresses existed at the boundary of weld metal and base metal because of the contraction-expansion effects resulting from phase transformations and cooling rate differences. Fatigue fractures occurred at...

The effects of combination of severe plastic deformation and Shot Peening surface treatment on fatigue behavior of 6082 aluminum alloy

    , Article Russian Journal of Non-Ferrous Metals ; Volume 56, Issue 2 , 2015 , Pages 206-211 ; 10678212 (ISSN) Mohammadi, S ; Irani, M ; Karimi Taheri, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, the effects of Equal Channel Angular Pressing process (ECAP) followed by Shot Peening process (SP) on the fatigue properties of 6082 aluminum alloy are investigated. Several samples of the alloy are ECAPed and SPed and then their mechanical behavior are characterized using tensile, micro-hardness, and fatigue tests. The results indicate that shot peening and then polishing the specimen after one-pass ECAP is an effective method to improve the fatigue life of the alloy. Moreover, by increasing the number of ECAP passes before shot peening, a local work softening occurs at the subsurface layer, leading to a significant decrease in the fatigue life of the alloy. The results of...

This model, which was based on the plastic strain energy, had three correction factors including temperature, strain and mean stress effects. The predicted lifetime showed a proper agreement with experimental data. By the present model, higher accuracy was obtained in comparison to other existed approaches. Besides, the present model had lower number of material...

    Abstract
In the present study, the out-of-phase thermomechanical fatigue (OP-TMF) behavior of a cast aluminum-silicon-magnesium alloy, the A356.0 alloy which has been widely used in diesel engine cylinder heads, is compared to room-temperature and high-temperature low cycle fatigue (RT-, HT-LCF) behaviors. For this purpose, strain/temperature-controlled isothermal and non-isothermal fatigue tests were performed based on realistic loading conditions in cylinder heads. Fatigue tests results showed that the plastic strain increased during cycles under constant mechanical strain amplitude, while the specimen failed. Under LCF loadings, the cyclic hardening occurred at low temperatures for the A356.0...

    Abstract
This paper presents experimental results on the fatigue properties of Al-matrix nanocomposites prepared by the friction stir processing (FSP) technique. An Al-Mg alloy (AA5052) with different amounts (∼2 and 3.5 vol%) of pre-placed TiO2 nanoparticles were FSPed up to 6 passes to attain homogenous dispersion of nano-metric inclusions. Microstructural studies by electron microscopic and electron back scattering diffraction (EBSD) techniques showed that nano-metric Al3Ti (50 nm), TiO2 (30 nm), and MgO (50 nm) particles were distributed throughout a fine-grained Al matrix (<2 μm). Consequently, a significant improvement in the tensile strength and hardness was attained. Uniaxial...

The effect of dynamic strain aging on fatigue properties of dual phase steels with different martensite morphology

    , Article Materials Science and Engineering A ; Volume 527, Issue 1-2 , 2009 , Pages 235-238 ; 09215093 (ISSN) Molaei, M. J ; Ekrami, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Dual phase (DP) steels with network and fibrous martensite were produced by intercritical annealing heat treatment cycles. Some of these steels were deformed at dynamic strain aging temperatures. Room temperature tensile tests of specimens deformed at 300 °C showed that both yield and ultimate tensile strengths for both morphologies increased, while total elongation decreased. Fatigue test results before and after high temperature deformation showed that dynamic strain aging has a stronger effect on fatigue properties of dual phase steels with fibrous martensite. Cracks in DP steels with fibrous martensite propagate in a tortuous path in soft ferrite phase, while they pass of both hard and...

    , Article Journal of Failure Analysis and Prevention ; Volume 17, Issue 6 , 2017 , Pages 1276-1287 ; 15477029 (ISSN) Kashyzadeh, K. R ; Maleki, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In the present study, the main purpose is investigation of the coatings thickness effect on the fatigue life of AISI 1045 steel. Herein, two different coatings of warm galvanization and hardened chromium have been used on the specimens. Fatigue tests were performed on specimens with different coating thicknesses of 13 and 19 µm. In the high-cycle level, S–N curves are extracted with 13 points for each sample. The results show that the galvanized coating is the most appropriate coating with low thickness, but with significant increasing of coating thickness, the best choice is hardened chromium coating. However, artificial neural network (ANN) has been used as an efficient approach instead of...
