Damage prediction for un-coated and coated aluminum alloys under thermal and mechanical fatigue loadings based on a modified plastic strain energy approach

    , Article Materials and Design ; Volume 66, Issue PB , 2015 , Pages 587-595 ; 02613069 (ISSN) Azadi, M ; Farrahi, G. H ; Winter, G ; Huter, P ; Eichlseder, W ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this article, a novel energy-based lifetime prediction model has been presented for uncoated and coated aluminum alloys, subjected to thermal and mechanical fatigue loadings. For this objective, isothermal and thermo-mechanical fatigue tests were performed on the A356.0 alloy, with and without thermal barrier coating systems. This model, which was based on the plastic strain energy, had three correction factors including temperature, strain and mean stress effects. The predicted lifetime showed a proper agreement with experimental data. By the present model, higher accuracy was obtained in comparison to other existed approaches. Besides, the present model had lower number of material...

Comparison between isothermal and non-isothermal fatigue behavior in a cast aluminum-silicon-magnesium alloy

    , Article Strength of Materials ; Volume 47, Issue 6 , November , 2015 , Pages 840-848 ; 00392316 (ISSN) Azadi, M ; Winter, G ; Farrahi, G. H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In the present study, the out-of-phase thermomechanical fatigue (OP-TMF) behavior of a cast aluminum-silicon-magnesium alloy, the A356.0 alloy which has been widely used in diesel engine cylinder heads, is compared to room-temperature and high-temperature low cycle fatigue (RT-, HT-LCF) behaviors. For this purpose, strain/temperature-controlled isothermal and non-isothermal fatigue tests were performed based on realistic loading conditions in cylinder heads. Fatigue tests results showed that the plastic strain increased during cycles under constant mechanical strain amplitude, while the specimen failed. Under LCF loadings, the cyclic hardening occurred at low temperatures for the A356.0...

Crack-based healing master curve derived from linear amplitude sweep tests: a cohesive healing indicator for asphalt binders

    Abstract
This investigation employed an interrupted torsion fatigue test using the linear amplitude sweep procedure to assess the intrinsic self-healing potential of unaged, aged, rejuvenated, and re-aged asphalt binders. Continuous oscillatory shear strain loading at different damage levels were interrupted with a single rest period of different durations. An index based on the decrease in crack length following the rest period (Ha) has been defined to accurately reflect the occurrence of healing. The results indicate that Ha is higher at lower damage levels and for longer rest-period durations. The amount of irreversible crack growth increased with an increase in crack propagation and aging level....

Applications of ultrasonic testing and machine learning methods to predict the static & fatigue behavior of spot-welded joints

    Abstract
Ultrasonic Testing (UT) is one of the well-known Non-Destructive Techniques (NDT) of spot-weld inspection in the advanced industries, especially in automotive industry. However, the relationship between the UT results and strength of the spot-welded joints subjected to various loading conditions is unknown. The main purpose of this research is to present an integrated search system as a new approach for assessment of tensile strength and fatigue behavior of the spot-welded joints. To this end, Resistance Spot Weld (RSW) specimens of three-sheets were made of different types of low carbon steel. Afterward, the ultrasonic tests were carried out and the pulse-echo data of each sample were...

    Abstract
One of the major challenges in the manufacturing parts, especially metals, is turning with good/excellent surface quality, which has a significant effect on the fatigue strength of the industrial components. Selecting incorrect or unsuitable values of machining parameters leads to vibration instability in the cutting tool and as a result, excessive roughness is created on the product’s surface. Therefore, one of the ways to reduce the roughness factor and increase the product fatigue life is to control the relative slip and vibration between the cutting tool and the workpiece. To achieve this goal, the authors attempted to investigate the simultaneous effects of tool overhang and cutting...

Contact of an asymmetrical rounded apex wedge with a half plane

    , Article International Journal of Engineering Science ; Volume 50, Issue 1 , January , 2012 , Pages 192-197 ; 00207225 (ISSN) Adibnazari, S ; Sharafbafi, F ; Ghanati, P ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Two-dimensional elastic contact problem of an asymmetrical rounded apex wedge with a half plane is considered and an analytical solution is presented for vertical and horizontal external loading in the presence of coulomb friction. The pressure and shear distribution functions are found in closed form under partial slip condition. Further by utilizing a new relation Muskhelishvili's potential function is obtained and results are analyzed. Designing better cutting tools, selecting fretting fatigue test pads and deeper lap joint analyzing are several practical applications of the outcomes

    Abstract
In this paper, a new relation is introduced that simplifies the determination of the Muskhelishvili's potential function in plane contact problems. The relation is Φ (z) = 1 / 2 [p (z) - i q (z)], which is correct for all uncoupled contact problems. The new relation is proved in a mathematical way and utilized to obtain the potential function in several contact problems. A complete agreement has been observed between our results and the potential functions that have been obtained from complicated methods in the past. Utilization of the new relation simplifies the solution of contact problems and analytical calculation of the stress and displacement fields, which may lead to the design of...

    Abstract
In this paper seven different multiaxial fatigue criteria based on stress, strain and energy were employed to estimate the fatigue lives of double shear lap joint specimens of aluminum 2024-T3 with bolt clamped and interference fitted-bolt clamped fastener holes. Detailed finite element (FE) simulations were conducted to obtain the stress and strain distributions in the joint to be used to as basic data in estimating the fatigue lives using multiaxial fatigue criteria. The estimated lives were compared with available experimental fatigue test results to investigate the capability of the criteria in predicting the fatigue lives. The results showed that the accuracy of life estimation for any...
