Use of Data Assimilation Methods for Multiphase Flow in Porous Media

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Najafi, Hossein (Author) ; Rajabi Ghahnavieh, Abbas (Supervisor) ; Bazargan, Hamid (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
The importance of optimizing the extraction process of available resources increases each day due to the increasing energy consumption and the lack of energy resources. Oil and gas are one of the most important sources of energy. Although existing oil and gas resources are thought to be sufficient to meet the growing energy demand for the next few decades, given the non-renewable nature of these resources and the growing demand for oil and gas, it will become much harder to meet the future energy demand. Many existing oil fields are now in the process of maturing, and the discovery of large new oil fields is rare. As a result, new technologies must be used in the future to meet this demand,...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mirzaei Teshnizi, Masoud (Author) ; Pourtakdoost, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This thesis deals with the attitude estimation based on low cost sensor for a micro satellite in a circular, low earth orbit (LEO) and sensor calibration. With two body problem theory and Quaternion formulation, rotational motion is modeled. In addition gravity gradient effect is considered on satellite orbital elements. Using a 3-axis MEMS-based magnetometer and a sun sensor as two measurement systems, low cost attitude estimation is proposed. Bias and Scale factor are presented to model deterministic sensor error and white Gaussian noise to model stochastic sensor error. It is shown that by sensor calibration the estimation accuracy will improve. Non-linear estimation methods EKF, SRUKF...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mirheidari, Ali (Author) ; Jalili, Rasoul (Supervisor)
    Abstract
With the growing deployment of host and network intrusion detection systems, analyzing generated alerts from these systems becomes critically important and challenging due to its complexity and high amount of data. Alert Correlation systems are a possible solution for deep analysis of incoming alerts in response to potential attacks against enterprise networks. Although several known alert correlation systems have been proposed for this purpose so far, most of them do not support high amount of input due to their centralized architecture. In this thesis, we propose a system architecture and approach for alert correlation to be extensible, flexible, and modular. The architecture encompasses...

Dynamic State Estimation in Power Systems Using Wide Area Measurement System (WAMS) Data

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mahdi Yousef, Mostafa (Author) ; Parniani, Mostafa (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the early days of implementing state estimation in power systems, only the steady-state and quasi-steady-state models of the system were considered for formulating the state estimation problem, accordingly called, Static State Estimation (SSE). However, after a few decades, with the growing diversity of power system components and complexity of its dynamic phenomena, uncertainty in the power system has dramatically increased. Consequently, the need for situational awareness of the dynamic states of the system (such as rotor angle and speed of the generators) is felt more than ever. In addition, occurrence of the catastrophic blackouts in the world owing to deficiency in dynamic monitoring...

Investigating on Filtration of Solid Particles in Culture Media after Fermentation

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Maleki, Maziar (Author) ; Roosta Azad, Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In biotechnology processes, in addition of culture media there is a solid phase which dispensed across the system. In most of bioprocesses, first operational unit for downstream treatment is the separation of this particles from fermentation liquor. In contrast with other categories like inorganic chemistry, solid particles in fermentation liquor (which the main part of it is biomass itself) have complicated physical & rheological properties. For example, all of biomass species are hydrophilic and sometimes form colloidal solutions. With this perspective, separation of solid phase from fermentation liquor is a hard challenge in this kind of processes. In this research, with regard of great...

Autonomous Orbit Estimation for Regional Navigation Satellites

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Memaran, Mohsen (Author) ; Asadian, Nima (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, autonomous orbit estimation of regional navigation satellites has been investigated. Estimation of satellite orbit is an integral part of satellite navigation, which may be executed via assistance of ground station. As the satellite is exposed to the ground station view, range, direction and rate of range is measured by mean of ranging instrumentation relative to ground reference, hence the precise position is calculated. In this thesis a set of satellites are investigated in a unique structure called constellation with the purpose of navigation. The occurrence which is likely to happen in this condition, is the failure of ground station under certain circumstances or losing...

Probabilistic Output-Only Identification of Soil-Structure Systems Using Shear Beam Model

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Masoudifar, Mohsen (Author) ; Mahsuli, Mojtaba (Supervisor) ; Ghahari, Farid (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
This paper proposes a novel probabilistic framework for output-only identification of a soil-structure system. The system is modeled by a vertical shear beam resting on the soil representative springs. The proposed framework estimates the unknown parameters of the system and the foundation input motion time history simultaneously, using sparsely measured responses of the structure. The unknown parameters of the system include stiffness of the sway and rocking springs, shear modulus of the beam, and the modal damping ratios of the system. These parameters are modeled as random variables whose joint probability distribution is updated in a Bayesian scheme using the observations of structural...

Dynamic Modeling and Localization of a Moving Magnetic Particle in a Fluid for Capsule Endoscopy Application

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mazinani, Ali (Author) ; Nejat Pishkenari, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Endoscopy is a medical operation in which a camera is sent into the patient's body and the physician starts taking pictures at specified times. In the traditional endoscopic procedure, a camera is sent into the body by a guiding wire. This can cause severe pain to the patient. In the newer method, a camera is mounted on a small capsule and the patient swallows the capsule. Then the camera inside the capsule starts taking photos and sends them out. This procedure, in addition to being painless, allows the physician to access the innermost parts of the body or the digestive tract. In capsule endoscopy, unlike the older method, one has to find the position and orientation of the capsule at any...

Application of Kalman Filters for Dynamic Control of Beams Subjected to Moving Load and Mass

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Moradi, Sarvin (Author) ; Mofid, Masood (Supervisor) ; Eftekhar Azam, Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this study, for the first time, a comprehensive and online framework for active control of beams subjected to the moving mass is presented. In active control problems, comprehensive knowledge of system states is required to determine the control force, but it is not possible to measure all system states in practice with a limited number of sensors. In this regard, Kalman filters are introduced to control systems to help improve the performance of control systems as observers of system states. However, in the case of beams subjected to the moving mass, due to the moving nature of the passing mass, in addition to system states, it is also important to identify the input load. In previous...

Photonic Methods for Ultra-broadband RF Arbitrary Waveform Generation

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Mokhtari, Arash (Author) ; Akbari, Mahmood (Supervisor) ; Mehrany, Khashayar (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
This thesis includes five major parts and eight chapters. In the first part, the literature of arbitrary waveform generation is reviewed. The expansion and diversity of telecommunication services like WIMAX , UWB , RoF , satellite telemetry methods and sensor networks require ultra-broadband arbitrary waveform generation methods. The ultra-broadband signals are those signals with normalized bandwidth (%BW is the ratio of signal’s bandwidth to the central frequency) over 15%. The main approach to enjoy the advantages of photonic processing is to modulate microwave signal with the light and then feed it to the optical signal processor. This light processor in case of linearity is called...
