Vibrational properties of C60: A comparison among different inter-atomic potentials

    , Article Computational Materials Science ; Volume 122 , 2016 , Pages 38-45 ; 09270256 (ISSN) Nejat Pishkenari, H ; Ghaf Ghanbari, P ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier  2016
    Abstract
Using seven bond-order potentials and five force fields, the fundamental natural frequency of C60,Ag(1) (breathing mode), and two other basic modes, namely Hg(1) (squashing mode) and T2g(1) are calculated. The same frequencies are derived through a DFT B3LYP/6-31G(d) calculation. Furthermore, the results are compared with Raman and IR scattering data, and previous quantum mechanics calculations, depicting the strength of each interatomic potential in predicting the vibrational properties of Buckminsterfullerene. AIREBO, which is formulated for analyzing hydrocarbons, shows the highest accuracy among all of the potentials under investigation. In general, bond-order potentials predict a...

Experimental study on interaction of aerodynamics with flexible wings of flapping vehicles in hovering and cruise flight

    , Article Archive of Applied Mechanics ; Volume 80, Issue 11 , 2010 , Pages 1255-1269 ; 09391533 (ISSN) Mazaheri, K ; Ebrahimi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
Flapping wings are promising lift and thrust generators, especially for very low Reynolds numbers. To investigate aeroelastic effects of flexible wings (specifically, wing's twisting stiffness) on hovering and cruising aerodynamic performance, a flapping-wing system and an experimental setup were designed and built. This system measures the unsteady aerodynamic and inertial forces, power usage, and angular speed of the flapping wing motion for different flapping frequencies and for various wings with different chordwise flexibility. Aerodynamic performance of the vehicle for both no wind (hovering) and cruise condition was investigated. Results show how elastic deformations caused by...

    , Article Journal of Sound and Vibration ; Volume 432 , 2018 , Pages 549-568 ; 0022460X (ISSN) Kaviani Rad, H ; Salarieh, H ; Alasty, A ; Vatankhah, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Academic Press  2018
    Abstract
In this paper, the planar maneuver of a flexible satellite with regard to its flexible appendages vibration has been studied. The flexible satellite translates and rotates in a plane; in addition, the flexible appendages can also vibrate in that plane. The system governing equations, which are coupled partial and ordinary differential equations, are obtained based on Hamilton's principle. Then the original system converts to three equivalent subsystems, two of which contains one partial differential equation and one ordinary differential equation along with four boundary conditions, by using change of variables. Employing control forces and one control torque which are applied to the central...

    Abstract
In this research, we have investigated the planar maneuver of a flexible satellite with appendages anti-symmetric vibration. The hybrid governing equations are comprised of coupled partial and ordinary differential equations which are derived by employing Hamilton's principle. In this paper, control goals are the tracking desired pitch angle along with the flexible appendages vibration suppression simultaneously by using only one control torque which is applied to the central hub. The boundary control is proposed to fulfill these control aims; furthermore, this boundary control ensures that spillover instability phenomenon is eliminated, and in-domain sensors and actuators implement are...

Adaptive-passive structural vibration attenuation using distributed absorbers

    , Article Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part K: Journal of Multi-body Dynamics ; Volume 216, Issue 3 , 2002 , Pages 223-235 ; 14644193 (ISSN) Jalili, N ; Esmailzadeh, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Professional Engineering Publishing  2002
    Abstract
A distributed dynamic vibration absorber with adaptive capability is presented to improve vibration suppression characteristics of harmonically excited structures. A double-ended cantilever beam carrying intermediate lumped masses forms the absorber subsection. The adaptive capability is achieved through concurrent adjustment of the positions of the moving masses, along the beam, to comply with the desired optimal performance. The necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of periodic oscillatory behaviour, along with some physical bounds placed on the absorber parameters, form a constrained optimization problem for the optimum tuning strategy. Through numerical simulations it is...

Flexible polymeric tail for micro robot drag reduction bioinspired by the nature microorganisms

    , Article Physics of Fluids ; Volume 34, Issue 11 , 2022 ; 10706631 (ISSN) Heyat Davoudian, S ; Javadi, K ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In nature, most microorganisms have flexible micro/nanostructure tails, which help them create propulsion, reduce drag, or search for food. Previous studies investigated these flexible structures mostly from the propulsion creation perspective. However, the drag reduction and the underlying physical mechanisms of such tails are less known. This scientific gap is more significant when multi-polymeric/hierarchical structures are used. To fill the gap, we use the dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) method as a powerful fluid-polymer interaction technique to study the flexible tails' influences on drag reduction. Note that the flow regime for these microorganisms is in the range of laminar low...

    Abstract
The attitude fault-tolerant control of a flexible satellite actuated by reaction wheels and magnetic torquer bars is investigated in this article. A low earth orbit is considered for moment perturbations such as drag and gravity gradient. Furthermore, the flexible panels attached to a rigid central body are modeled through the assumed mode approach by a finite set of bending modal motion. The ordinary differential equations of their generalized coordinates are found using Lagrange’s equation, and the resulting dynamical model is validated by comparing its simulation results to the NX Siemens software results. Finally, a fault-tolerant controller based on sliding mode control is suggested and...

Approximate analytical solutions of an axially moving spacecraft appendage subjected to tip mass

    , Article Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part G: Journal of Aerospace Engineering ; Vol. 228, issue. 9 , 2014 , pp. 1487-1497 ; ISSN: 09544100 Ghaleh, P. B ; Khayyat, A. A ; Farjami, Y ; Abedian, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Approximate solutions for vibrations of flexible beam-type appendages subjected to tip mass are studied while uniform and exponential profiles for arm deployment are simulated. Applying an equivalent dynamical system and following Lagrangian approach, the equations of motion of the system are derived as nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) (with time-varying coefficients), in which the effect of the tip mass can be considered as some nonlinearity added to the 'no tip mass' case dynamics. The approximate closed-form solutions are obtained through a novel methodology using a computer algorithm, in which the solutions of the 'no tip mass' case are expanded by imposing quadratic...

Boundary exponential stabilization of non-classical micro/nano beams subjected to nonlinear distributed forces

    , Article Applied Mathematical Modelling ; Volume 40, Issue 3 , 2016 , Pages 2223-2241 ; 0307904X (ISSN) Edalatzadeh, M. S ; Alasty, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, the vibration suppression of micro- or nano-scale cantilever beams used in M/NEMS devices is studied. The beam is subjected to some nonlinear distributed forces, namely electrostatics force with first order fringing field correction, Casimir, and van der Waals forces. For the sake of precision, the beam is modeled by strain gradient elasticity theory capable of predicting the size effects in mechanical behavior of small-scale flexible structures. Since the governing partial differential equation of motion is nonlinear, the linearization approach is adopted to tackle the control problem. A novel control law is proposed that guarantees the exponential stability of the linearized...

Chaos analysis in attitude dynamics of a flexible satellite

    , Article Nonlinear Dynamics ; Volume 93, Issue 3 , 2018 , Pages 1421-1438 ; 0924090X (ISSN) Chegini, M ; Sadati, H ; Salarieh, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, we analytically and numerically investigate chaos in attitude dynamics of a flexible satellite composed of a rigid body and two identical rigid panels attached to the main body with springs. Flexibility, viewed as a perturbation, can cause chaos in the satellite. To show this, first, we use a novel approach to define this perturbation. Then, we employ canonical transformation to transform the Hamiltonian of the system from five to three degrees of freedom. Next, we approximate the system by a second-order differential equation with a time quasiperiodic perturbation. Finally, we apply Melnikov–Wiggins’ method near the heteroclinic orbits to prove the existence of chaos. Using...

    Abstract
Attitude and vibration control of a general form of flexible satellites is addressed in this paper. Partial differential dynamic equations are derived considering new details such as multi sectioned solar panels and elastic connections between main hub and solar panels. Boundary control approach is adopted to eliminate simplification errors of discrete models, using just one actuator in the hub. Asymptotic stability of attitude dynamics is proved for a group of boundary controllers and necessary conditions for asymptotic stability of vibrations are discussed. Being independent of modeling accuracy and using easily measurable feedbacks are among advantages of the proposed class of...

H∞ control of a flexible transmission system

    , Article Proceedings of the Thirty-Sixth Southeastern Symposium on System Theory (SSST04), Atlanta, GA., 14 March 2004 through 16 March 2004 ; Volume 36 , 2004 , Pages 536-540 Amirifar, R ; Sadati, N ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
An application of a continuous-time H∞ control to a flexible transmission system is presented. This approach has been proposed in order to assure high control performance in the presence of large load variation on the system. In this approach, the loading variations are considered as the multiplicative perturbation of the nominal plant. The desired specifications are enforced in the H∞ problem as the constraints on weighting functions. After an initial design procedure, the parameters of weighting functions, in order to obtain the desired performances, are tuned and then the final weighting functions are derived. The simulation results for three different loadings are given and compared

    Abstract
There has been great demand for shape memory alloy (SMA) wires as actuators for shape control of flexible structures. The experimental setup of this study consists of a flexible beam actuated by two active SMA actuators. The input applied to the SMA actuator in this setup is electrical current while the output is the strain or position. To control strain of the actuator, the SMA wire is heated resistively in order to reach the desired temperature calculated by inverse of the phenomenological model. In heating the SMA wire resistively, the controllable quantity is the heat input to the wire via an applied current. In controller design, changes of physical properties of SMA wires and the...

    Abstract
In this paper, a new approach is used to obtain the nonlinear mode for a flexible cantilever beam. The dependency of resonance of the beam on the exciting force amplitude is observed experimentally and theoretically. In this regard, the end response of a cantilever beam under the base excitation is measured for various force amplitudes. Then, by using the nonlinear normal modes, the reduced-order governing equation is obtained. The discrete model obtained according to identification of nonlinear terms can predict the frequency response of the beam and jump phenomenon properly. Comparison between experimental data and theoretical outputs show acceptable agreement. © 2020 Faculty of...

    Abstract
The aim of this article is design, fabricate, and control a conceptual prototype of a flexible wearable robot to increase fingers’ force using a novel cable mechanism. In this robot, force and position are controlled in separate phases by a fuzzy system equipped with emotional learning. A Flexible structure has been chosen for this robot, because flexible gloves are lighter and much more suitable for use in daily tasks compared to rigid structures. Since this system is supposed to be substituted for weak or damaged limb, it should have a behavior similar to the body organs as much as possible. Therefore, a novel mechanism, inspired by the natural movement mechanism of the human hand, has...
