    Abstract
In this paper, asymptotic swarm stability of fractional-order swarm systems in the presence of uniform time-delays is studied. By using a frequency domain approach, the necessary and sufficient condition on the values of time-delay is derived to guarantee the asymptotic swarm stability under a directed/undirected interaction graph. Numerical examples are given to confirm the obtained analytical results. © 2015 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group

    Abstract
Radiographic inspection is one of the most appreciated techniques among non-destructive testing methods due to the production of a film which acts as a unique fingerprint record. Converting radiographs to a digital format and further digital image processing is the best method of enhancing the image quality and assisting the interpreter on his evaluation. In this research, different algorithms were used for image enhancement and radiograph interpretation in MATLAB environment. A graphical user interface (GUI) was created for implementation of different algorithms. Both spatial and frequency domains techniques were used for image enhancement. The main enhancement technique was a spatial...

    Abstract
Using a combination of the pole placement and online empirical mode decomposition (EMD) methods, a new algorithm is proposed for adaptive active control of structural vibration. The EMD method is a time-frequency domain analysis method that can be used for nonstationary and nonlinear problems. Combining the EMD method and Hilbert transform, which is called Hilbert-Huang transform, achieves a method that can be implemented to extract instantaneous properties of signals such as structural response dominant instantaneous frequencies. In the proposed algorithm, these estimated instantaneous properties are utilized to improve the pole-placement method as an adaptive active control technique. The...

    Abstract
Vertical vibration of structures due to strong near-field earthquakes could culminate in catastrophic consequences. In this article, the optimum patterns of two types of wave barriers with different geometry configurations, buried in the soil domain, are obtained in order to reduce the vertical acceleration of the top of a circular foundation placed on the soil surface. In order to look into the influence of various soil deposits, six soil deposits with diverse material properties and bedrock depths are examined. The topology optimization procedure for finding the optimum position of the wave barriers has been conducted using coupled finite element-genetic algorithm methodology. First, the...

Motion blur identification in noisy images using fuzzy sets

    , Article 5th IEEE International Symposium on Signal Processing and Information Technology, Athens, 18 December 2005 through 21 December 2005 ; Volume 2005 , 2005 , Pages 862-866 Moghaddam, M. E ; Jamzad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
Motion blur is one of the most common blurs that degrades images. Restoration of such images are highly dependent to estimation of motion blur parameters. Many researchers have developed algorithms to estimate linear motion blur parameters. These algorithms are different in their performance, time complexity, precision and their robustness in noisy environments. In this paper we have presented a novel algorithm to estimate linear motion blur parameters such as direction and extend by using Radon transform to find direction and fuzzy set concepts to find its extend. The most benefit of this algorithm is its robustness and precision in noisy images. Our method was tested on a wide range of...

Efficient scale estimation methods using lightweight deep convolutional neural networks for visual tracking

Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH  2021
    Abstract
In recent years, visual tracking methods that are based on discriminative correlation filters (DCFs) have been very promising. However, most of these methods suffer from a lack of robust scale estimation skills. Although a wide range of recent DCF-based methods exploit the features that are extracted from deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in their translation model, the scale of the visual target is still estimated by hand-crafted features. Whereas the exploitation of CNNs imposes a high computational burden, this paper exploits pre-trained lightweight CNNs models to propose two efficient scale estimation methods, which not only improve the visual tracking performance but also...

    Abstract
This study presents a novel perspective on pressure-transient analysis (PTA) of downhole-pressure and flow-rate data by use of system-identification (SI) techniques as widely used in advanced process engineering. Key features of the paper are that it considers the classic PTA process from a system-theoretical perspective; derives the causal structure of the flow dynamics; proposes a method to deal with continuously varying pressure and flow-rate signals contaminated with correlated noise, which estimates physical reservoir parameters through a systematic matching procedure in the frequency domain; and can cope with arbitrary (i.e., not necessarily piecewise constant) flow-rate signals. To...

    Abstract
Analysis of thermal-hydraulics fluctuations in pressurized water reactors (e.g., local and global temperature or density fluctuations, as well as primary and charging pumps fluctuations) has various applications in calculation or measurement of the core dynamical parameters (temperature or density reactivity coefficients) in addition to thermal-hydraulics surveillance and diagnostics. In this paper, the thermal-hydraulics fluctuations in PWRs are investigated. At first, the single-phase thermal-hydraulics noise equations (in the frequency domain) are originally derived, without any simplifying assumptions. The fluctuations of all the coolant parameters, as well as the radial distribution of...

    Abstract
Method of lines (MoL) is numerically described for analysis of spatial periodic structures based on discrete finite difference hybridization of each transverse plane of multilayer structure. The results show rigorous simulation of the three-dimensional (3D) arbitrary-shaped space grating with the best convergence and high stability for highly conductive metallic layers. We propose our method to be considered for analysis of stacked rotated grating (SRG). Also, we propose time-varying MOL using implementation of the multi-frequency finite difference frequency domain (FDFD) method upon our presented method, so that one can simulate spatiotemporal structures in the hybridization framework...

Modal parameter identification of rotary systems based on power spectral density transmissibility functions

    , Article 2018 SAE World Congress Experience, WCX 2018, 10 April 2018 through 12 April 2018 ; Volume 2018-April , 2018 ; 01487191 (ISSN) Khodaygan, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    SAE International  2018
    Abstract
Operational modal analysis based on power spectral density transmissibility functions (PSDT) is a powerful tool to identify the modal parameters with low sensitivity to excitations. The rotor systems may have the asymmetric damping or stiffness matrices which can lead to increase the difficulties of the identification procedure. In this paper, a new method is proposed to identify the modal parameters of the asymmetric rotary systems by the operational modal analysis based on the power spectral density transmissibility functions. For pole extraction from the PSDT function, a proper parametric identification method such as the Poly-reference Least Squares Complex Frequency-domain method...

A method for system identification in the presence of unknown harmonic excitations based on operational modal analysis

    , Article 2019 SAE Automotive Technical Papers, WONLYAUTO 2019, 1 January 2019 through 1 January 2019 ; Volume 2019-January, Issue January , 2019 ; 01487191 (ISSN) Khodaygan, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    SAE International  2019
    Abstract
Operational modal analysis techniques classically have been developed based on the assumption that the input to the system is a stationary white noise. While, in many practical cases, the systems are excited by combination of white noise and colored noises (harmonic excitations). Consequently, in conditions where non-white noises are present, the existing OMA methods cannot completely distinguish between the system poles and the induced poles due to colored noises. In order to overcome this weakness of OMA methods, some researches have been conducted in the field. In this paper, a new method is proposed for identifying the modal parameters of the system under the unknown colored noises,...

A discrete model for response estimation of soil-structure systems with embedded foundations

    , Article Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Vibration ; Volume 10, Issue 2 , June , 2011 , Pages 263-276 ; 16713664 (ISSN) Khodabakhshi, P ; Jahankhah, H ; Ghannad, M. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
The need for simplified physical models representing frequency dependent soil impedances has been the motivation behind many researches throughout history. Generally, such models are generated to capture impedance functions in a wide range of excitation frequencies, which leads to relatively complex models. That is while there is just a limited range of frequencies that really influence the response of the structure. Here, a new methodology based on the response-matching concept is proposed, which can lead to the development of simpler discrete models. The idea is then used to upgrade an existing simple model of surface foundations to the case of embedded foundations. The applicability of...

    Abstract
Abnormal operating conditions for the timing belt can lead to cracks, fatigue, sudden rupture and damage to engines. In this study, an intelligent system was developed to detect and classify high-load operating conditions and high-temperature operating conditions for timing belts. To achieve this, vibration signals in normal operating conditions, high-load operating conditions and high-temperature operating conditions were collected. Time-domain signals were transformed to the frequency domain and the time-frequency domain using the fast Fourier transform method and the wavelet transform method respectively. In the data-mining stage, 25 statistical features were extracted from different...

    , Article 2007 IEEE International Conference on Signal Processing and Communications, ICSPC 2007, Dubai, 14 November 2007 through 27 November 2007 ; 2007 , Pages 1127-1130 ; 9781424412365 (ISBN) Khademi, N ; Akhaee, M. A ; Ahadi, S. M ; Moradi, M ; Kashi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
In this paper, our main purpose is to embed data in the frequency domain of audio signals. Data was embedded by means of Quantization Index Modulation (QIM) in the frequency domain. With this aim, the spectrum of the audio signal was divided into two parts. The first part consisted of the first 19 Barks and the second included the remaining 6 Barks. Each of these parts had a different quantization step size. In order to have large quantization step sizes which yield more robustness, Human Auditory System (HAS) has been used. Decoder detects the watermark signal, without using the original audio signal. Simulation results have shown that this watermarking scheme has better robustness against...

Beamforming, null-steering, and simultaneous spatial and frequency domain filtering in integrated phased array systems

    , Article AEU - International Journal of Electronics and Communications ; Volume 110 , 2019 ; 14348411 (ISSN) Karami, P ; Atarodi, S. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier GmbH  2019
    Abstract
In the case that phased array systems are not capable of attenuating interferences, Radio Frequency (RF) front-ends and Analog Digital Converters (ADCs) with a large dynamic range are required to avoid saturation of the receiver. This leads to a higher power consumption. In this paper, employing N-path circuits in Mixer-First receivers, a novel method is introduced in which spatial and frequency blockers are eliminated right before entering the system on the antennas input. In fact using this technique, adjustable spatial notch filter and band-pass frequency filter are implemented to suppress spatial and frequency interferences. The proposed method enhances the robustness and effectiveness...

Analysis of frequency-dependent network equivalents in dynamic harmonic domain

    Abstract
Rational function-based models have proved to be very efficient for accurate frequency-dependent modeling of power system components. These models are able to characterize the components terminal behaviours (analysing the admittance matrix) for nodal analysis. This provides a fast convergence and inherent stability to the solution routine of the model. This work presents a general framework for interfacing the dynamic phasor method to the rational models. That would be promising for the electromagnetic transient analysis (under harmonic distortion), in the frequency domain. Therefore, Y-element rational pole-residue models (employing the vector fitting method) are developed. Moreover, the...

Stockwell transform for epileptic seizure detection from EEG signals

    , Article Biomedical Signal Processing and Control ; Volume 38 , 2017 , Pages 108-118 ; 17468094 (ISSN) Kalbkhani, H ; Shayesteh, M. G ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Epilepsy is the most common disorder of human brain. The goal of this paper is to present a new method for classification of epileptic phases based on the sub-bands of electroencephalogram (EEG) signals obtained from the Stockwell transform (ST). ST is a time-frequency analysis that not only covers the advantages of both short-time Fourier transform (FT) and wavelet transform (WT), but also overcomes their shortcomings. In the proposed method, at first, EEG signal is transformed into time-frequency domain using ST and all operations are performed in the new domain. Then, the amplitudes of ST in five sub-bands, namely delta (δ), theta (θ), alpha (α), beta (β), and gamma (γ), are computed. In...

Identifiability of location and magnitude of flow barriers in slightly compressible flow

    Abstract
Classic identifiability analysis of flow barriers in incompressible single-phase flow reveals that it is not possible to identify the location and permeability of low-permeability barriers from production data (wellbore pressures and rates), and that only averaged reservoir properties in between wells can be identified. We extend the classic analysis by including compressibility effects. We use two approaches: a twin experiment with synthetic production data for use with a time-domain parameter-estimation technique, and a transfer-function formalism in the form of bilaterally coupled four-ports allowing for an analysis in the frequency domain. We investigate the identifiability, from noisy...

Multiple partial discharge sources separation using a method based on laplacian score and correlation coefficient techniques

    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
Partial discharge (PD) activity can be destructive to the transformer insulation, and ultimately may result in total breakdown of the insulation. Partial discharge sources identification in a power transformer enables the operator to evaluate the transformer insulation condition during its lifetime. In order to identify the PD source; in the case of presence of multiple sources; the first step is to capture the PD signals and to extract their specific features. In this contribution, the frequency domain analysis, the time domain analysis and the wavelet transform are employed for feature extraction purpose. In practice, there might be plenty of features, and in each scenario, only some of...
