    , Article 2007 IEEE International Conference on Telecommunications and Malaysia International Conference on Communications, ICT-MICC 2007, Penang, 14 May 2007 through 17 May 2007 ; February , 2007 , Pages 145-149 ; 1424410940 (ISBN); 9781424410941 (ISBN) Ghamari Adian, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
In the realization of adaptive beamforming algorithms, the least-mean-squares (LMS) algorithm had been the most popular scheme used for Smart Antenna systems. This Paper proposes an alternate scheme in the form of the Normalized LMS (NLMS) algorithm with active tap detection for WCDMA systems. By taking advantage of spatial filtering, the proposed scheme promises to reduce the bandwidth required for transmitting data by improving convergence rate. The performance of the Frequency Domain NLMS algorithm in the presence of multipath effects and multiple users is analyzed using simulations. This analysis is compared to that of LMS algorithm and suggests improvement in the convergence rate and...

    , Article 2007 Large Engineering Systems Conference on Power Engineering, LESCOPE'07, Montreal, QC, 10 October 2007 through 12 October 2007 ; January , 2007 , Pages 244-249 ; 9781424415830 (ISBN) Karimi Ghartemani, M ; Zamani, M ; Sadati, N ; Parniani, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
Application of Fractional Order PID (FOPID) controller to an Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) is presented and studied in this paper. An FOPID is a PID whose derivative and integral orders are fractional numbers rather than integers. Design stage of such a controller consists of determining five parameters. This paper employs Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm to carry out the aforementioned design procedure. A novel cost function is defined to facilitate the control strategy over both the time-domain and the frequencydomain specifications. Comparisons are made with a PID controller from standpoints of transient response, robustness and disturbance rejection characteristics. It is...

Analysis of frequency-dependent network equivalents in dynamic harmonic domain

    , Article Electric Power Systems Research ; Volume 193 , 2021 ; 03787796 (ISSN) Karami, E ; Hajipour, E ; Vakilian, M ; Rouzbehi, K ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Rational function-based models have proved to be very efficient for accurate frequency-dependent modeling of power system components. These models are able to characterize the components terminal behaviours (analysing the admittance matrix) for nodal analysis. This provides a fast convergence and inherent stability to the solution routine of the model. This work presents a general framework for interfacing the dynamic phasor method to the rational models. That would be promising for the electromagnetic transient analysis (under harmonic distortion), in the frequency domain. Therefore, Y-element rational pole-residue models (employing the vector fitting method) are developed. Moreover, the...

    Abstract
A novel super-resolution volumetric photoacoustic microscopy, based on the theory of structured-illumination, is proposed in this paper. The structured-illumination will be introduced in order to surpass the diffraction limit in a photoacoustic microscopy (PAM) structure. Through optical excitation of the targeted object with a sinusoidal spatial fringe pattern, the object's frequency spectrum is forced to shift in the spatial frequency domain. The shifting in the desired direction leads to the passage of the high-frequency contents of the object through the passband of the acoustic diffraction frequency response. Finally, combining the low-frequency image with the high-frequency parts in...

Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH  2021
    Abstract
In this paper, the control problem of a wind turbine in region 3 (where the wind velocity is between the rated wind velocity and cut out wind velocity) has been investigated by considering the aerodynamic nonlinear behavior of the wind-structure interaction. The model has been developed by using the blade element momentum (BEM) theory to obtain the aerodynamic torque and aerodynamic loads in edgewise and flapwise directions. For validation, the aerodynamic behavior of the onshore NREL 5 MW turbine has been compared with the Fatigue, Aerodynamics, Structures, and Turbulence (FAST) aeroelastic code in terms of the power coefficient. Wind speed is modelled as a three-dimensional profile with...

Multiple partial discharge sources separation using a method based on laplacian score and correlation coefficient techniques

    , Article Electric Power Systems Research ; Volume 210 , 2022 ; 03787796 (ISSN) Javandel, V ; Vakilian, M ; Firuzi, K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
Partial discharge (PD) activity can be destructive to the transformer insulation, and ultimately may result in total breakdown of the insulation. Partial discharge sources identification in a power transformer enables the operator to evaluate the transformer insulation condition during its lifetime. In order to identify the PD source; in the case of presence of multiple sources; the first step is to capture the PD signals and to extract their specific features. In this contribution, the frequency domain analysis, the time domain analysis and the wavelet transform are employed for feature extraction purpose. In practice, there might be plenty of features, and in each scenario, only some of...

    Abstract
A novel architecture for efficient time and frequency synchronization, applied to the long-term evolution (LTE) standard, is proposed. For symbol timing, we propose applying a symbol-folding method on top of the sign-bit reduction technique, leading to a novel algorithm for the cyclic prefix-type recognition in LTE. Following the symbol timing, the fractional carrier frequency offset is estimated and compensated using an adaptive gain loop, which allows for a high-accuracy compensation in a short interval. In the frequency domain, for cell search, we propose a sign-bit reduction technique on top of the matched filter method for the primary synchronization signal detection. In addition, we...

    Abstract
In this study, the authors evaluate the performance of asynchronous optical multi-carrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) for intensity modulated/direct detection systems to be used in next-generation optical access networks. The proposed system employs Gold sequence in frequency-domain to provide asynchronous resource sharing. In long-reach passive optical networks, fibre impairments degradation to the performance of ordinary optical CDMA can be avoided by frequency-domain digital compensation methods in the proposed MC-CDMA. In comparison with orthogonal frequency division multiple access, peak-to-average power ratio in the proposed MC-CDMA is reduced and asynchronous resource...

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Consumer Electronics ; Volume 56, Issue 3 , October , 2010 , Pages 1643-1651 ; 00983063 (ISSN) Ferdosizadeh Naeiny, M ; Jafarnia Jahromi, A ; Marvasti, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
In this paper, a metric based symbol predistortion method is introduced for Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR) reduction of the Space Frequency Block Coded (SFBC) Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems with two transmitter antennas. In the proposed method, a metric is defined which shows the contribution of each frequency domain symbol to the time domain samples with high amplitude at both antennas. Then, the symbols with the highest metric values are chosen and predistorted such that the peak powers are reduced while the SFBC relationship between two antennas holds constant. Three variants of this method will be introduced. Then, this technique is extended to the general...

Time-domain split-step method with variable step-sizes in vectorial pulse propagation by using digital filters

    , Article Optics Communications ; Volume 283, Issue 12 , June , 2010 , Pages 2518-2524 ; 00304018 (ISSN) Farhoudi, R ; Mehrany, K ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
Finite impulse response (FIR) and infinite impulse response (IIR) digital filters are proposed to allow for time-domain simulation of optical pulse propagation by using the operator-splitting technique. These filters simulate polarization mode dispersion and chromatic dispersion effects with acceptable accuracy in time-domain. An analytical relation between the coefficients of these filters and the simulation step-size is established to accommodate the possibility of carrying out the time-domain split-step method with variable split-step length at virtually no computational burden. The superiority of the proposed method over the conventional frequency-domain technique is particularly...

    , Article Biomedical Signal Processing and Control ; Volume 38 , 2017 , Pages 108-118 ; 17468094 (ISSN) Kalbkhani, H ; Shayesteh, M. G ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Epilepsy is the most common disorder of human brain. The goal of this paper is to present a new method for classification of epileptic phases based on the sub-bands of electroencephalogram (EEG) signals obtained from the Stockwell transform (ST). ST is a time-frequency analysis that not only covers the advantages of both short-time Fourier transform (FT) and wavelet transform (WT), but also overcomes their shortcomings. In the proposed method, at first, EEG signal is transformed into time-frequency domain using ST and all operations are performed in the new domain. Then, the amplitudes of ST in five sub-bands, namely delta (δ), theta (θ), alpha (α), beta (β), and gamma (γ), are computed. In...

    Abstract
Whole-body vibration (WBV) has been identified as one of the serious risk factors leading to spinal disorders, particularly in professional drivers. Although the influential factors in this area have been investigated epidemiologically, finite element (FE) modeling can efficiently help us better understand the problem. In this study, a modified HYBRID III dummy FE model which was enhanced by detailed viscoelastic discs in the lumbar region was utilized to simulate the effect of WBV on lumbar spine loads. Spinal responses to the vertical sinusoidal vibrations of a generic seat were obtained and spinal injury risk factors were calculated. Effects of variation of excitation frequencies, three...

    Abstract
Electromyogram signal (EMG) is an electrical manifestation of contractions of muscles. Surface EMG (sEMG) signal collected from the surface of skin has been used in diverse applications. One of its usages is in pattern recognition of hand prosthesis movements. The ability of current prosthesis devices has been generally limited to simple opening and closing tasks, minimizing their efficacy compared to natural hand capabilities. In order to extend the abilities and accuracy of prosthesis arm movements and performance, a novel sEMG pattern recognizing system is proposed. To extract more pertinent information we extracted sEMGs for selected hand movements. These features constitute our main...

    Abstract
A novel plane-wave-based approach for analytical treatment of dispersive relation is developed and applied to analyze the behavior of electromagnetic waves in plasmonic-photonic-crystal slabs. Here Drude model is used for describing frequency dependent permittivity of plasma rods in host dielectric medium. In the present work, dispersion relation below and above the light line is calculated approximately by means of Maxwell-Garnett effective medium and Revised Plane Wave Method (RPWM). The eigen-functions are then used in Revised Guided Mode Expansion (RGME) as the set of orthonormal bases. Following this procedure, the accurate band structure is obtained. In these kind of methods there are...

    Abstract
Overwhelming number of control laws has been studied for control of robot manipulators with rigid links and joints. However controllers designed under this assumption may not accurately control the manipulator link due to visco-elastic properties that appear in the link behavior. In this study, a novel approach for robust control of a single-link manipulator is presented to force the link to have rigid motions, while it has visco-elastic behavior. In this regard, initially robot dynamics is extracted, followed by the design of four appropriate controllers through the loop-shaping approach. The obtained model is first represented in state space, however later converted to transfer function...

    Abstract
Electromyogram (EMG) signal is an electrical manifestation of muscle contractions. EMG signal collected from surface of the skin, a non-invasive bioelectric signal, can be used in different rehabilitation applications and artificial extremities control. This study has proposed to utilize the surface EMG (SEMG) signal to recognize patterns of hand prosthesis movements. It suggests using an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) to identify motion commands for the control of a prosthetic hand. In this work a hybrid method for training fuzzy system, consisting of back-propagation (BP) and least mean square (LMS) is utilized. Also in order to optimize the number of fuzzy rules, a...

    Abstract
The paper presents the experimental and analytical model analysis of a steel-girder arch bridge. The field test is carried out by ambient vibration testing under traffic excitations. Both the peak picking method in the frequency domain and the stochastic subspace identification method in the time domain are used for the output-only model identification. A good agreement in identified frequencies has been found between the two methods. It is further demonstrated that the stochastic subspace method provides better mode shapes. The three-dimensional finite element models are constructed and an analytical model analysis is then performed to generate natural frequencies and mode shapes in the...
