    Abstract
In this work, effective parameters of SIMA process to obtain non dendritic microstructure in A356 alloy were investigated. In addition, the effect of SIMA process on the evolution of morphology of silicon and intermetallic phases in this alloy was studied. Microstructure images obtained from optical microscopy and SEM observation showed that increase in plastic work up to 40% and then holding of samples in the semi solid state at temperature of 580°C, causes that primary dendritic structure changes to non dendritic, fine and globular structure, but optimum reheating time completely depended on initial thickness of samples. If all parameters of SIMA process are the same, the grain boundaries...

Structural changes of radial forging die surface during service under thermo-mechanical fatigue

    , Article Materials Science and Engineering A ; Volume 527, Issue 1-2 , 2009 , Pages 98-102 ; 09215093 (ISSN) Nematzadeh, F ; Akbarpour, M. R ; Kokabi, A. H ; Sadrnezhaad, S. k ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Radial forging is one of the modern open die forging techniques and has a wide application in producing machine parts. During operation at high temperatures, severe temperature change associated with mechanical loads and the resultant wearing of the die surface lead to intense variation in strain on the die surface. Therefore, under this operating condition, thermo-mechanical fatigue (TMF) occurs on the surface of the radial forging die. TMF decreases the life of the die severely. In the present research, different layers were deposited on a 1.2714 steel die by SMAW and GTAW, with a weld wire of UDIMET 520. The microstructure of the radial forging die surface was investigated during welding...

    Abstract
Co2+ and Cr3+-substituted SrBaCu2-xCoxCryFe28-yO46 X-type hexaferrite with x = y = 0, 0.1 to 0.5 (step = 0.1) were prepared through auto-combustion sol–gel method and sintered at 1250 °C for 5 h which was found from thermal analysis. The thermal investigation, phase detection, spectral, magnetic, and dielectric characteristics of the prepared composition were investigated by TGA, XRD, FTIR, VSM, and dielectric measurement. XRD patterns of the entire composition confirmed the development of a single phase of X-type structure. The enhancement in the lattice parameters and cell volume was observed by varying the Co–Cr concentration, attributed to the larger ionic radii substitution. FTIRspectra...

Stress relaxation and flow behavior of ultrafine grained AA 1050

    , Article Mechanics of Materials ; Volume 89 , 2015 , Pages 23-34 ; 01676636 (ISSN) Mohebbi, M. S ; Akbarzadeh, A ; Yoon, Y. O ; Kim, S. K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier  2015
    Abstract
Abstract Flow behavior of ultrafine grained (UFG) AA 1050 sheets processed by Accumulative Roll-Bonding (ARB) and its viscous nature are investigated by plane strain compression test (PSC) along with stress relaxation. Occurrence of dynamic recovery is validated by TEM observations as the microstructural explanation of the flow softening at the start of deformation of the 8-cycles specimen. Significant recovery of the UFG specimens during the stress relaxation test is also disclosed. It is discussed that neither the internal stress (σi) nor the density of mobile dislocations are constant during the test. The possible effects of these two factors as well as contribution of the...

Strengthening and ductilization mechanisms of friction stir processed cast Mg–Al–Zn alloy

    , Article Materials Science and Engineering A ; Volume 781 , 2020 Jiryaei Sharahi, H ; Pouranvari, M ; Movahedi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
AZ91 alloy, the most widely used Mg casting alloy, exhibits low strength/ductility and weak energy absorption, which is a function of its large grain size and the presence of a coarse and continuous network of β-Mg17Al12 intermetallic compounds. This work demonstrated that friction stir processing (FSP) enables enhancement of strength and energy absorption capability of AZ91 alloy. The influence of FSP treatment on various potential strengthening mechanisms, including grain boundary, solid solution, and sub-micron particle strengthening mechanisms, was studied. It is identified that the grain boundary strengthening plays a significant contribution to the strength of the FSP treated AZ91. FSP...

Static recrystallization behavior of AEREX350 superalloy

    , Article Materials Science and Engineering A ; Volume 527, Issue 27-28 , October , 2010 , Pages 7313-7317 ; 09215093 (ISSN) Hosseinifar, M ; Asgari, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
The recrystallization behavior of a commercial nickel-cobalt base superalloy, AEREX 350, is investigated by means of hardness test, X-ray diffraction, and microscopy. It is found that the alloy resists recrystallization up to a high temperature of 1025 °C. Recrystallized grains are readily formed at grain boundaries below this temperature; however, the growth of these new grains is inhibited by Widmanstätten η particles having coherent facets with the nickel matrix (γ). The passage of the recrystallization front results in coherency loss and consequently dissolution of the η platelets. Recrystallization proceeds with a discontinuous precipitation of the η phase behind the moving boundary

    Abstract
In this work, the 6061 aluminum alloy tubes are severely deformed through a novel method called Tube Channel Pressing (TCP). The ability of this process in improving mechanical properties, grain refinement and microstructural changes of the alloy with different heat treatments before and after TCP process is investigated. Results show that TCP has notable effect on grain refinement and decreases crystallite size of solid solution treated aluminum 6061 material to 52. nm after equivalent strain of 3.09 which is comparable with the measured data from other SPD processes. The strength of the specimens aged before TCP is higher than that of those aged after TCP. The specimens artificially aged...

    , Article Journal of Materials Processing Technology ; Volume 211, Issue 3 , 2011 , Pages 368-375 ; 09240136 (ISSN) Moeinifar, S ; Kokabi, A. H ; Hosseini, H. R. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The influence of thermal cycles on the properties of the coarse grained heat affected zone in X80 microalloyed steel has been investigated. The thermal simulated involved heating the X80 steel specimens to the peak temperature of 1400 °C, with different cooling rates. The four-wire tandem submerged arc welding process, with different heat input values, was used to generate a welded microstructure. The martensite/austenite constituent appeared in the microstructure of the heat affected zone region for all the specimens along the prior-austenite grain boundaries and between the bainitic ferrite laths. The blocky-like and stringer martensite/austenite morphology were observed in the heat...

    Abstract
Calcium titanate-CaTiO3 (perovskite) has been used in various industrial applications due to its dopant/doping mechanisms. Manipulation of defective grain boundaries in the structure of perovskite is essential to maximize mechanical properties and stability; therefore, the structure of perovskite has attracted attention, because without fully understanding the perovskite structure and diffracted planes, dopant/doping mechanisms cannot be understood. In this study, the areas and locations of atoms and diffracted planes were designed and investigated. In this research, the relationship between Young’s modulus and planar density of unit cell, super cells (2 × 2 × 2) and symmetry cells of nano...

    , Article Materials and Design ; Volume 132 , 2017 , Pages 250-256 ; 02641275 (ISSN) Khani Moghanaki, S ; Kazeminezhad, M ; Logé, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The recrystallization behavior of an Al-Cu-Mg alloy is investigated in multi-directionally forged over-aged and solution treated alloys, during non-isothermal annealing. Deformation and non-isothermal annealing are performed with a Gleeble 3800 thermo-mechanical simulator. The hardness measurements show that there is a thermal stability in mechanical properties during non-isothermal annealing up to 250 °C with heating rate of 10 K·min− 1. Differential scanning calorimetry curves of deformed over-aged and solution treated alloys describe the related precipitation phenomena. EBSD maps demonstrate that partially recrystallized and fully recrystallized microstructures appear in deformed...

The mechanical milling stages were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), bulk density measurement and laser particle size analyzer. It was shown that the reaction between Al and CuO occurs progressively as the mechanical milling continues, leading to formation of nanoscaled alumina particles. The grain refinement of the...

Rapid growth of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles using ultrasonic irradiation

    , Article Ultrasonics Sonochemistry ; Volume 17, Issue 5 , Jun , 2010 , Pages 853-856 ; 13504177 (ISSN) Rouhani, P ; Taghavinia, N ; Rouhani, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
A rapid, environmental friendly and low-cost method to prepare hydroxyapatite nanoparticles is proposed. In this method, hydroxyapatite is produced in a sonicated pseudo-body solution. The sonication time was found effective in the formation of the crystalline phase of nanoparticles. In our experimental condition, 15 min sonication resulted in the most pure hydroxyapatite phase. Also it was shown that growth temperature is a crucial factor and hydroxyapatite crystallizes only at 37 °C. The particles formed by sonication were generally smaller and more spherical than those obtained without sonication. Sonication increased the hydroxyapatite crystal growth rate up to 5.5 times compared to...

    Abstract
Mechanical milling proceeded by sintering was used to synthesize nanostructured temperature-resistant TZM alloy. Milling under Ar for different times (1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 h) and sintering at 1500, 1600 and 1700 °C for 30, 45, 60 and 90 min resulted in increasing of low-energy grain boundaries (LEGBs) and dispersion of TiC and ZrC with a size of ~ 65 nm in the matrix near LEGBs. Morphology and grain size of the products were determined from scanning electron microscope (SEM) images and X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, almost precisely. Optimum density of nanostructured TZM alloy ~ 9.95 ± 0.01 g/cm 3 was achieved by sintering at 1700 °C for 90 min

    , Article Materials Letters ; Volume 65, Issue 3 , February , 2011 , Pages 523-526 ; 0167577X (ISSN) Dourandish, M ; Simchi, A ; Hokamoto, K ; Tanaka, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Microstructural development and phase formation at the interface of yttria stabilized zirconia (3Y-TZP)/430L stainless steel composite layers produced by co-sintering method were studied by SEM, HRTEM, micro-focus XRD, and EPMA. Formation of a rich chromium boundary layer at the interface was noticed, which revealed Cr aggregation at the interface at the elevated temperatures. Misfit dislocations were also observed at the joint interface to tackle the mismatch crystallographic orientations between the ceramic and metal layer. The results of the micro-focus XRD showed formation of no new phases at the boundary zone. Microstructural studies also revealed a retarded grain growth in the...

Optimization of selenization process to remove Ga-induced pin-holes in CIGS thin films

    , Article Solar Energy ; Volume 236 , 2022 , Pages 175-181 ; 0038092X (ISSN) Khosroshahi, R ; Dehghani, M ; Tehrani, N. A ; Taghavinia, N ; Bagherzadeh, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
In thin-film solar cells, deposition of pinhole and the crack-free absorber layer, with the right chemical stoichiometry is highly important for high-performance solar cell devices. In solution-based CIGS solar cell technology, a nanoparticle ink approach provides phase stability of the final chalcogenide absorber layer. However, the sintering of small nanoparticles to form large grains with reduced grain boundaries is an important challenge in the fabrication process. This is usually realized by annealing in the Se atmosphere, i.e. selenization process. However, the presence of Ga in CIGS films leads to pinholes after selenization. In this study, the synthesis and deposition of high-quality...

Optimization of mechanical properties of a micro alloyed steel

    , Article Materials and Design ; Volume 30, Issue 6 , 2009 , Pages 2167-2172 ; 02641275 (ISSN) Rasouli, D ; KhamenehAsl, Sh ; Akbarzadeh, A ; Daneshi, G. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
In this work, the effect of hot deformation temperature on microstructure and mechanical properties of micro alloyed steel was studied. The results indicated that by decreasing the deformation temperature final microstructure is refined and the volume fraction of grain boundary ferrite is increased and some pearlite is produced. Therefore both the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength is increased, while the toughness is preserved in comparison to a ferritic-pearlitic microstructure. Also a model was developed to relate the deformation condition to the volume fraction of acicular ferrite at mixed microstructure. © 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved
