, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Taherzadeh Fard, Morteza (Author) ; Saidi, Mohammad Saeed (Supervisor) ; Ghofrani, Mohammad Bagher (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
The main purpose of this work is investigation of coolability of a boiling debris bed. The main governing equations are derived using volume averaging technique. From this technique some specific interfacial areas between phases are appeared and proper relations for modeling these areas are proposed. Using these specific areas, a modification for the Tung/Dhir model in the annular flow regime is proposed. The proposed modification is validated and the agreements with experimental data are good. Finally, governing equations and relations are implemented in the THERMOUS program to model two-phase flow in the debris bed in the axisymmetric cylindrical coordinate. Two typical configurations...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Rastegar, Mohammad (Author) ; Fotuhi Firouzabad, Mahmud (Supervisor) ; Zareipour, Hamid Reza (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Increasing demand, rising energy costs, and environmental concerns are some of the main challenges faced by the energy industry in upcoming years. With such a diverse set of issues, it is important to take a holistic approach to addressing these concerns and therefore transitioning to a smarter grid. Demand response (DR) has recently been introduced as a promising solution to these issues in the smart grid era. Since residential demand is a significant portion of the total system load, residential customers play critical roles in a proper implementation of DR programs. The main obstacle in broad implementation of residential DR is the low participation of customers in these programs. Lack of...

Experimental Modeling of Influence of Exhaust Gas Recirculation on Flameless Combustion

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hassani, Masoud (Author) ; Ghorbanian, Kaveh (Supervisor) ; Farshchi, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The aim of this work is to design, build and test a laboratory scale flameless combustion chamber. Also, a theoretical model is developed to simulate flameless combustion with a simple model. Flameless combustion is a combustion type with transparent flame which consumes less fuel than typical premix and diffusion flames and emits very low level of NOx. In flameless combustion, recirculation ratio is higher than typical diffusion flames so the flow field is highly turbulent. High recirculation ratio causes low oxygen concentration in combustion zone; thus requiring inlet air to be preheated for flame stabilization at low equivalence ratio and oxygen concentration. We have designed a...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ebrahimi Dehshali, Massoud (Author) ; Shafii, Mohammad Behshad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
A desired circulatory flow in flat-plate pulsating heat-pipes may improve electronic thermal management. This desired flow can be achieved by fabricating connecting channels (CCs) to increase flow resistance in one direction. In addition, connecting channels may increase the freedom degree of fluid. In order to investigate the effect of CC, two aluminum flat plate thermal spreaders with overall size 320mm×220mm×5mm - one with CC (CC-FPHP) and one without it- were fabricated. Both of the speaders have square channels with crosssection 2mm×2.8mm. The FPHPs were charged with ethanol as working fluid with filling ratios of 35%, 50%, 65%, and 80% by volume. Performance of connecting-channels in...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Abrar, Bagher (Author) ; Darbandi, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Numerical simulations of participating media need careful solution of the radiation transfer equation (RTE) along the fluid flow governing equations. Evidently, the accuracy of achieved solutions highly depends on the accuracy of radiation transfer calculations. Despite numerous efforts performed in the previous researches, the RTE calculation still faces with several challenges from both accuracy and computational cost perspectives. The main objective of this research is to present new contributions in overcoming such challenges. So, a finite-volume (FV) solver is suitably developed to solve the RTE numerically. This extended solver is then coupled with an existing FV flow solver. The...
