DiskAccel: Accelerating disk-based experiments by representative sampling

    , Article Performance Evaluation Review, 15 June 2015 through 19 June 2015 ; Volume 43, Issue 1 , 2015 , Pages 297-308 ; 01635999 (ISSN) Tarihi, M ; Asadi, H ; Sarbazi Azad, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Disk traces are typically used to analyze real-life workloads and for replay-based evaluations. This approach benefits from capturing important details such as varying behavior patterns, bursty activity, and diurnal patterns of system activity, which are often missing from the behavior of workload synthesis tools. However, accurate capture of such details requires recording traces containing long durations of system activity, which are difficult to use for replay-based evaluation. One way of solving the problem of long storage trace duration is the use of disk simulators. While publicly available disk simulators can greatly accelerate experiments, they have not kept up with technological...

A multi-product pricing-inventory model with stochastic demand and products interdependency

    , Article Proceedings - 3rd International Conference on Information Management, Innovation Management and Industrial Engineering, ICIII 2010, 26 November 2010 through 28 November 2010 ; Volume 2 , Nov , 2010 , Pages 227-231 ; 9780769542799 (ISBN) Inanlou Ganjiz, A. R ; Shavandi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
In this paper, we study a pricing-inventory model with multiple interdependent products and stochastic demand. In the relevant literature, there are many researches that try to optimize the inventory or price independently and also optimizing joint inventory and pricing problems for single product. But joint optimization of inventory and pricing for multiple interdependent products is relatively new and still there are many potential research gaps in this area. We show that the multiplicative demand form problem, that we develop, is a convex nonlinear programming (NLP) model or is convertible to it. We also provide upper and lower bounds for the additive demand form model

    Abstract
The consequences of road accidents are significant for drivers and society. The connected vehicle system (CVS) is a promising technology that can improve road safety by warning drivers of traffic hazards. Broad implementation of the CVS could mitigate the harmful consequences of road accidents. Widespread implementation requires schemes that can promote the pervasive adoption of the system by drivers. This study proposes the innovative idea of implementing the CVS in usage-based insurance (UBI) as a measurement probe and modeling drivers' acceptance of the new UBI scheme. This study developed a random effect logit model demonstrating that the drivers of cheaper vehicles and middle-age...

    Abstract
Gaussian approximation filters have increasingly been developed to enhance the accuracy of attitude estimation in space missions. The effective employment of these algorithms demands accurate knowledge of system dynamics and measurement models, as well as their noise characteristics, which are usually unavailable or unreliable. An innovation-based adaptive filtering approach has been adopted as a solution to this problem; however, it exhibits two major challenges, namely appropriate window size selection and guaranteed assurance of positive definiteness for the estimated noise covariance matrices. The current work presents two novel techniques based on relative entropy and confidence level...

Robust-fuzzy model for supplier selection under uncertainty: an application to the automobile industry

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 25, Issue 4 , 2018 , Pages 2297-2311 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Rabieh, M ; Modarres, M ; Azar, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Sharif University of Technology  2018
    Abstract
This paper proposes an innovative robust-fuzzy method for multi-objective, multi-period supplier selection problem under multiple uncertainties. This approach integrates robust optimization and fuzzy programming. Uncertain parameters are modeled as random variables that take value within a symmetrical interval. However, due to the complexity or ambiguity of some real world problems and especially the nature of some of the available input data, the length of interval is also highly uncertain. This ambiguity motivated us to present a new approach, which could be applicable to multiple uncertainties conditions. Thus, in our approach, the half-length of these intervals is also represented by...

    Abstract
In the context of controlled release drug delivery approaches, the systems providing zero-order release kinetics have special advantages. Through employing these systems, drug concentration could be maintained within the therapeutic window over release time; thus maximum effectiveness alongside minimized side effects of the drug are achieved. However, obtaining zero-order drug release is extremely challenging. One of the main obstacles is the fact that implemented devices should be designed to overcome the decreasing mass transfer driving force, especially, in polymeric systems in which diffusion mechanism is dominant. In this study, we developed a new configuration of a polymeric matrix...

    Abstract
Computed tomography (CT) is one of the most valuable diagnostic imaging tools in the clinic and is widely used worldwide. One of the main motivations driving research and development in CT is to achieve better image quality while keeping the radiation dose to the patient as low as possible. In this regard, computer simulations play a key role in the optimization of CT design. In this work, a fan-beam source model (FBSM) for the simulation of multi-slice fan-beam CT scanners using the MCNP Monte Carlo code, has been developed and implemented. The use of this model removes the need for using the collimator in the system configuration and thus to overcome the perennial problem of particle...

Image adaptive semi-fragile watermarking scheme based on RDWT-SVD

    , Article 2008 International Conference on Innovations in Information Technology, IIT 2008, Al Ain, 16 December 2008 through 18 December 2008 ; February , 2008 , Pages 130-134 ; 9781424433971 (ISBN) Kourkchi, H ; Ghaemmaghami, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
One of the main properties of semi-fragile image watermarking methods is robustness against lossy compressions, e.g. JPEG conversion. In this paper, robustness of a semi-fragile watermarking scheme based on DWT (Discrete Wavelet Transform), coupled with SVD (Singular Value Decomposition), is improved. To achieve this goal a traditional, critically sampled wavelet transform is replaced by a redundant wavelet transform. The proposed approach is compared to the DWT-SVD based watermarking, introduced earlier, and significantly greater robustness under the JPEG compression is presented. ©2008 IEEE

Experimental and numerical investigation of fire effect on GFRP sheets used in strengthening RC structures considering anisotropic properties of composite materials

    , Article Proceedings, Annual Conference - Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, 10 June 2008 through 13 June 2008, Quebec City, QC ; Volume 2 , 2008 , Pages 1061-1071 ; 9781605603964 (ISBN) Goodarzvand Chegini, A ; Nikopour, H ; Nehdi, M ; Akbaril, J ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
In this study a model is presented to predict the residual strength of composite laminates exposed to the heat flux of fire. This model calculates the number of the damaged laminas considering the charred thickness of the composite laminate and then predicts the overall residual strength of the laminate analyzing each lamina. Charred laminas no longer have their initial properties due to decomposition of their polymer matrix. This model can obtain the damaged thickness by introducing a damage temperature, and solving the energy equation for the thermochemical response of the laminate. The thickness of the charred layer is measured for the laminate after exposure to different heat fluxes and...

    Abstract
The reliability of power electronic based converters has become increasingly important due to their wide-spread use in industry. An effective method to increase the availability of converters is to use condition monitoring systems for planning scheduled maintenances. This paper provides a method to monitor the condition of IGBTs in a back-to-back converter based on their on-state voltage measurement. Using the proposed system adds limited number of elements to the circuit but can be implemented independent from the converter. Considering the converter topology has made the proposed method applicable for condition monitoring of switches in different back-to-back converters. This advantage...

    Abstract
Traffic collisions are one of the most important challenges threatening the general health of the world. Iran's crash statistics demonstrate that approximately 16,500 people lose their lives every year due to road collisions. According to the traffic police of Iran, heavy vehicles (including trailers, trucks, and panel trucks) contributed to 20.5% of the fatal road traffic collisions in the year 2013. This highlights the need for devoting special attention to heavy vehicle drivers to further explore their driving characteristics. In this research, the effect of heavy vehicle drivers' behavior on at-fault collisions over three years has been investigated with an innovative approach of...

Fabrication of a microdialysis-based nonenzymatic microfluidic sensor for regular glucose measurement

    , Article Sensors and Actuators, B: Chemical ; Volume 333 , 2021 ; 09254005 (ISSN) Najmi, A ; Saidi, M. S ; Shahrokhian, S ; Hosseini, H ; Kazemzadeh Hannani, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Microdialysis-based continuous glucose measuring systems are desirable candidates for accurate and biologically safe monitoring of glucose level in diabetic patients. However, it is necessary to improve these systems by utilizing highly reliable non-enzymatic sensors instead of enzymatic ones, while lowering the size and lessening the dialysis fluid consumption. Our purpose is to design an implantable integrated microfluidic device for regular nonenzymatic microdialysis-based glucose measurement. We report a novel nonenzymatic microfluidic glucose sensor based on Pt-Ni nanoparticles - multiwalled carbon nanotubes/screen-printed carbon electrode (Pt-Ni NPs-MWCNTs/SPE). Devised microfluidic...
