Development of a Model for Assessing the Optimal Allocation of Innovation Resources in the Energy Technologies and Knowledge Flow

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Miremadi, Iman (Author) ; Saboohi, Yadollah (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Energy innovation is essential for tackling climate change. However, an established set of indicators, that can support policy makers in their design of policy mixes, has not been developed for evaluating the performance of energy innovation systems. So, one of the purpose of this study is to list and classify a large set of indicators of the performance of energy innovation systems at sectoral and technological levels. 120 listed indicators are evaluated using four usefulness criteria, demonstrating significant weaknesses in the available indicators. The indicators are also classified according to an innovation process categorization to see if they cover all aspects of an innovation system...

Model for Planning Flow of Knowledge to Optimize Energy and the Environment

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Motamedinezhad, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Saboohi, Yadollah (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate and analyse the technological transition of a new clean energy technology in the market. The agent-based modeling is used in national innovation chain to describe knowledge spillover between main actors in innovation procedure in order to attain renewable energy technology (RET) from basic research to commercial stage. Government’s expenditure on training human resource and R&D activities is modeled as a tool to analyse the development of innovation chain in order to increase diffusion rate of the new technology. Application of the knowledge flow model is demonstrated through analysis of introduction of solar PV in the energy system of Iran and...

Adaptive Estimation of Satellite Attitude via an Entropy Approach

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Barzegar, Aylin (Author) ; Pourtakdoust , Hossein (Supervisor) ; Kiani, Maryam (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nonlinear state estimation algorithms developed based on Bayesian framework have been increasingly utilized in space navigation and attitude estimation to enhance the mission performance. However, successful implementation of these algorithms requires accurate knowledge of process and measurement noise statistical properties. As the satellites experience various systematic and environmental uncertainties on orbit, no priori information of noise characteristics is usually available. In this regard, adaptive estimation algorithms have been widely utilized to tune the planned noise properties according to the variable working conditions. Among various adaptation methods, innovation-based...

Examining Evolution of Technology Performance in the Global Smartphone Industry

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Fatemi, Arman (Author) ; Kiamehr, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this research we have studied the changes in the technology performance in the smartphone industry, and by using theoretical models in technology management literature, we have compared this performance with coustomer’s required level of performance. The study shows that after 2011, the level of customer satisfactions depends less on the technology performance and more on the price. This observation is consistent with Christiensen’s suggested model for technology performance, in which after a certain point technology’s performance surpasses the customer’s need. In addition, we have studied the effect of modular design for smartphones on the customer’s satisfaction. We found that...

Evaluating the Effect of Innovation on Burden of Disease in Different Countries

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rostami, Saleh (Author) ; Miremadi, Iman (Supervisor) ; Saleh Farazi, Mohammad (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this comprehensive study, we explore the influence of general health innovation outputs on the burden of diseases across 70 nations spanning two decades, from 2000 to 2019, marking the first investigation of its kind. Our investigation takes into account associations among health-related patents, scholarly publications pertaining to health, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), a measure used to assess overall disease burden. Employing a robust fixed effect panel data model, our findings illuminate the notable impact health-related publications exert in mitigating disease burden universally across all countries examined. However, we did not find a similar association between patent...

Technological Capabilties, Generating Value-added and Upgrading in Global Value Chains: Evidence from Developing Countries

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology A'lami, Mohammad Hossein (Author) ; Miremadi, Iman (Supervisor) ; Madanizadeh, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Today, global value chains(GVCs) have distributed the production of goods and services all over the world and have become the main part of global trade. GVCs provide developing countries with oppurtunities for engaging in economic activity and producing goods, without developing all the infrastructure needed for producing it yourself. but participating in GVCs also pose some challenges to developing countries. if developing countries do not enhance their ability for generating value-added, by losing the advantage of cheap labour over time, they will fall into the so-called "middle-income trap". therefore upgrading, with the broad definition of generating more value-added, should be targeted...
