Scientific Naturalism: Ontological and Epistemological Analysis

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Biabanaki, Mehdi (Author) ; Golshani, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The term “scientific naturalism” is the invention of Thomas H. Huxley. He used it to describe a philosophical outlook that shunned the supernatural and adopted empirical science as the only reliable basis of knowledge about the physical, social, and moral worlds. Recent decades have witnessed a flurry of philosophical activity in the name of naturalism. Most contemporary philosophers identify themselves as naturalist, and much recent work in philosophy can be seen as part of general trend toward conducting philosophical inquiry under the umbrella of naturalistic assumptions. Today the label “naturalism” refers to a particular worldview. Nevertheless, naturalism is not a clearly defined...

Model-Driven Approach for Software Process Line Engineering

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Agh, Halimeh (Author) ; Ramsin, Raman (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Constructing bespoke software development processes according to the specifications of the project at hand has become a crucial issue, but defining a separate process for each potential project context is a time-consuming and costly endeavor. The Software Process Line (SPrL) is a concept similar to the Software Product Line (SPL), except that it belongs to the domain of software development process engineering; it allows software processes to be constructed according to a specific context by reusing core process assets. Tailoring a process line for constructing project-specific processes is time-consuming and error-prone if done manually; therefore, it is important that a high...

Sensitivity analysis of the OWA operator

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics, Part B: Cybernetics ; Volume 38, Issue 2 , 2008 , Pages 547-552 ; 10834419 (ISSN) Zarghami, M ; Szidarovszky, F ; Ardakanian, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
The successful design and application of the ordered weighted averaging (OWA) method as a decision-making tool depend on the efficient computation of its order weights. The most popular methods for determining the order weights are the fuzzy linguistic quantifiers approach and the minimal variability method, which give different behavior patterns for the OWA. These two methods will be first analyzed in detail by using sensitivity analysis on the outputs of the OWA with respect to the optimism degree of the decision maker, and then the two methods will be compared. The fuzzy linguistic quantifiers approach gives more information about the behavior of the OWA outputs in comparison to the...

Should methodological naturalists commit to metaphysical naturalism?

    , Article Journal for General Philosophy of Science ; Volume 51, Issue 1 , 2020 , Pages 185-193 Zargar, Z ; Azadegan, E ; Nabavi, L ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer  2020
    Abstract
It is widely supposed that methodological naturalism, understood as a thesis about the methodology of science, is metaphysically neutral, and that this in turn guarantees the value-neutrality of science. In this paper we argue that methodological naturalism is underpinned by certain ontological and epistemological assumptions including evidentialism and the causal closure of the physical, adoption of which necessitates commitment to metaphysical naturalism. © 2019, Springer Nature B.V

    Abstract
Vaccines require a period of at least three months for clinical trials, hence a method that can identify elicitation of immune response a few days after the first dose is a necessity. Evolutionary variable selections are modeling approaches for proper manipulation of available data which were used to set up an animal model for classification of time dependent 'HNMR metabolomic profiles and pattern recognition of fluctuations of metabolites in two groups of male rabbits. One group of rabbits was immunized with human red blood cells and the other used as control. Blood was obtained every 48 h from each rabbit for a period of six weeks and the serum monitored for antibodies and metabolites by...

    Abstract
This paper presents a three-dimensional micromechanical model of brain white matter tissue as a transversely isotropic soft composite described by the generalized Ogden hyperelastic model. The embedded element technique, with corrected stiffness redundancy in large deformations, was used for the embedment of a histology-informed probabilistic distribution of the axonal fibers in the extracellular matrix. The model was linked to a multi-objective, multi-parametric optimization algorithm, using the response surface methodology, for characterization of material properties of the axonal fibers and extracellular matrix in an inverse finite element analysis. The optimum hyperelastic...

, Article Proceedings of the 30th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, EMBS'08 - "Personalized Healthcare through Technology", 20 August 2008 through 25 August 2008, Vancouver, BC ; 2008 , Pages 4011-4014 ; 9781424418152 (ISBN) Yousefi Rizi, F ; Ahmadian, A. R ; Fatemizadeh, E ; Alirezaie, J ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
The main problem with airway segmentation methods which significantly influences their accuracy is leakage into the extra-luminal regions due to thinness of the airway wall during the process of segmentation. This phenomenon potentially makes large regions of lungparenchyma to be wrongly identified as airways. A solution to this problem in the previous methods was based on leak detection followed by reducing leakage during the segmentation process. This has been dealt with adjusting the segmentation parameters and performing the re-segmentation process on the pre-segmented area. This makes the algorithm very exhaustive and more dependent on the user interaction. The method presented here is...

    Abstract
Enzymatic decolorization of the monoazo dye, acid orange 7 (AO7) by the fungal peroxidase from Coprinus cinereus NBRC 30628 is a complex system, which is greatly affected by temperature, pH, enzyme activity and the concentrations of H2O2 and dye concentration. The study of these factors and investigating the combined interactions between them by applying one-factor-at-a-time (OFAT) method and two other statistical methods including 2-factorial method and response surface methodology (RSM) were aimed in this work. Through OFAT analysis the optimized conditions were a temperature of 25 °C, pH 9.0 with H2O2 concentration of about 3.9 mM and AO7 concentration of 40 mg/l. A complete...

Model enrichment: Concept, measurement, and application

    , Article Journal of Simulation ; Volume 6, Issue 2 , 2012 , Pages 125-140 ; 17477778 (ISSN) Yavari, E ; Roeder, T ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Simplicity and validity are recognized as important attributes of an effective simulation model. However, some disagreement exists both on the definitions of these concepts and on quantitative measures for them. This paper introduces Enrichment Level (EL) for (simulation) models. The EL is a quantitative measure to compare the effectiveness of alternative models when used in a particular project. While there is no conceptual restriction on expanding the EL, it currently captures the bias, speed, variance, and scope of a model as the main contributing enrichment factors. This paper explores these factors and suggests a utility-based method to combine them according to the relative importance...

Using design patterns for refactoring real-world models

    , Article Conference Proceedings of the EUROMICRO, 27 August 2009 through 29 August 2009 ; 2009 , Pages 436-441 ; 10896503 (ISSN) ; 9780769537849 (ISBN) Yaghoubi Shahir, H ; Kouroshfar, E ; Ramsin, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Many software development methodologies are based on modeling the real world. In some of these methodologies, real-world models are gradually transformed into software models, while in others, the real world is only considered as a preliminary source of insight into the physical business domain. Real-world modeling was pushed to the sidelines due to anomalies in real-world modeling approaches; however, with the advent of the Model-Driven Architecture (MDA), real-world conceptual modeling is likely to regain its importance. We propose a method for using Design Patterns in the context of model transformation, where real-world models are refactored through application of these patterns....
