    Abstract
Cooperation of nodes for routing and packet forwarding is inevitable in a mobile ad hoc network. Selfishness in such networks is a significant challenge and can cause network performance to noticeably degrade. In this paper, we propose some new selfishness models elicited from psychological behavior of human beings. We also evaluate performance of MANET in the presence of different percentages of selfish nodes that act based on our selfishness models. Results show that energy-based selfishness is a serious problem that could affect performance depends on mobility of nodes, density of network, and time of simulation. This kind of selfishness needs a comprehensive mechanism to cope with and we...

    Abstract
Delivering first aid before transferring patients to hospital is among keys to survival. Moreover, calling the emergency center as soon as possible and providing brief information about the patient are helpful for the emergency center to dispatch specialized medical team and equipments proportionate to the conditions of the patient. Mobile phone is a device which many people use and always carry with them. One more thing is that SMS (Short Message Service) stands as a favorite service in mobile network, used to exchange short messages and featuring low cost, non-stop lines of dispatch, possibilities for offline work and so forth. This paper puts forward procedures of calling an emergency...

Energy conserving movement-assisted deployment of Ad hoc sensor networks

    , Article IEEE Communications Letters ; Volume 10, Issue 4 , 2006 , Pages 269-271 ; 10897798 (ISSN) Mousavi, H ; Nayyeri, A ; Yazdani, N ; Lucas, C ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
Sensor network deployment is very challenging due to hostile and unpredictable nature of usage environments. In this letter, we propose two methods for the self-deployment of mobile sensors. The first one is a randomized solution that provides both simplicity and applicability to different environments. Inspired by simulated annealing, it improves both speed and energy conservation of the deployment process. The other method is suggested for environments where sensors form a connected graph, initially. At the cost of this extra limitation, we gain considerable improvements. © 2006 IEEE

    Abstract
With the advance of multimedia systems and wireless mobile communications, there has been a growing need to support multimedia services (such as mobile teleconferencing, mobile TV, telemedicine, and distance learning) using mobile multimedia technologies. Despite the research done in the field of mobile multimedia, delivery of real-time interactive video over noisy wireless channels is still a challenge for researchers. This paper presents a method for prioritising data partitioned MPEG-4 video in a way suitable for transmission over a mobile network. The effectiveness of the technique is demonstrated by examing its performance when the transport of the prioritized video streams can be...

A new soft-handoff management algorithm with two decision boundaries

    , Article 12th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications (PIMRC 2001), San Diego, CA, 30 September 2001 through 3 October 2001 ; Volume 1 , 2001 , Pages D54-D58 Ashtiani, F ; Salehi, J. A ; Aref, M. R ; Nasiri Kenari, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2001
    Abstract
One of the most prominent features of code division multiple-access (CDMA) cellular networks is their ability for applying soft-handoff. This type of handoff results in a better supporting of seamless communication services, capacity enhancement, QoS improvement, etc. Because of existence of more parameters and flexibilities compared to hard-handoff, an optimum solution for soft-handoff management and admission control for new and handoff calls is necessary. In this paper we propose a new algorithm with two thresholds for admission of new and handoff calls, and with two decision boundaries for controlling of handoff traffic. We compare this algorithm with a simpler one with only one decision...

Spectrum Mobility Analysis in Cognitive Radio Networks

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sheikholeslami, Fatemeh (Author) ; Nasiri Kenari, Masoumeh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Opportunistic spectrum access in cognitive radio networks has introduced multiple challenges in the realization of this technology. One of these key challenges is spectrum mobility, in which a secondary user (SU) must be able to vacate channels upon the appearance of a primary user (PU) and reestablish a communication link to avoid service termination, known as spectrum handoff. For a connection-based modeling, multiple interruptions can occur, which lead to multiple handoffs; hence, in a proactive approach, a sequence of target channels, rather than a single target channel must be determined. The first parts of this thesisis dedicated to the analysis of a time-slotted cognitive radio, in...

    Resource Sharing in Mobile Clouds

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Salehi, Mohammad Javad (Author) ; Hossein Khalaj, Babak (Supervisor)
    Abstract
By definition, Mobile Clouds are networks of mobile nodes, which are connected together using short-range communication links, and at the same time keep their connection with the long-range cellular networks. Short-range communication links in Mobile Clouds provide the opportunity of Resource Sharing, which can result in new services for end-users. These services are beyond the boundaries of traditional networks.
In the following report, we aim at focusing on some problems related to Mobile Clouds. First, we present a centralized model for managing the mobility of the nodes; then we try to propose algorithms for efficient data update and processing; and finally, we introduce a novel...

TED Large Signal Modeling in the Dominant Mode

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sadeghi, Amir Hossein (Author) ; Farzaneh, Forouhar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Transferred Electron Device is a semiconductor device being capable of generating oscillation in microwave frequencies. Applying a bias voltage to the device and putting it in a resonant circuit, a periodic waveform in the output current is observed. The cause of the generation of oscillation in the device is related to the characteristics of velocity-field in the device. In some part of the characteristics, it is observed that increasing the field inside the device causes the velocity of electrons to be reduced. This causes the generation of the negative conductance and the oscillation of the output current under some conditions. The purpose of this thesis is to represent an equivalent...

Joint mapping of mobility and trap density in colloidal quantum dot solids [electronic resource]

    , Article Journal of ACS nano ; 2013, Vol.7, No. 7, P.5757-5762 Stadler, Philipp ; Sutherland, Brandon R ; Ren, Yuan ; Ning, Zhijun ; Simchi, A. (Arash) ; Thon, Susanna M ; Hoogland, Sjoerd ; Sargent, Edward H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Field-effect transistors have been widely used to study electronic transport and doping in colloidal quantum dot solids to great effect. However, the full power of these devices to elucidate the electronic structure of materials has yet to be harnessed. Here, we deploy nanodielectric field-effect transistors to map the energy landscape within the band gap of a colloidal quantum dot solid. We exploit the self-limiting nature of the potentiostatic anodization growth mode to produce the thinnest usable gate dielectric, subject to our voltage breakdown requirements defined by the Fermi sweep range of interest. Lead sulfide colloidal quantum dots are applied as the active region and are treated...

    Abstract
Nowadays, handheld devices such as smartphones provide users with multi-touch input screens. Displaying interactive and touch-enabled 3D environments in such handheld devices has become popular in different applications like games or virtual reality. Technologies such as Web3D and WebGL have made the creation and display of 3D environments in mobile devices easier than ever. However, object manipulation techniques are not as well developed. For example, moving an object within the 3D environment or other similar object-specific manipulations are neither intuitive nor easy to perform. Current manipulation techniques like Gizmo that are successful in systems that use mouse and keyboard are not...

, Article Mobile Robotics: Solutions and Challenges - Proceedings of the 12th International Conference on Climbing and Walking Robots and the Support Technologies for Mobile Machines, CLAWAR 2009, 9 September 2009 through 11 September 2009, Istanbul ; 2010 , Pages 1121-1127 ; 9789814291262 (ISBN) Nakhaee, K ; Farahmand, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
A 3D dynamic model with 3 segments and 5 degrees of freedom (DOF) was developed to simulate the gait of a paraplegic patient while wearing a rigid orthosis. The equations of motion were formulated based on Denavit-Hartenberg notation and solved using a combined forward-inverse dynamics approach assuming locked knees, passive hips and actuated pelvis joints. Results showed that the model could take a single step in response to a sinusoidal motion applied to the pelvis joints. It was concluded that a paraplegic patient is able to walk with proper immobilization of the paralyzed joints and appropriate maneuver of the trunk, without the need to a propulsion supply from hands through crutches

    Abstract
There are many websites specially designed for mobile phones. Some hackers write automated programs to abuse these website services and waste the website resources. Therefore, it is necessary to distinguish between human users and computer programs. Methods known for achieving this are known as CAPTCHA (Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Human Apart). CAPTCHA methods are mainly based on the weaknesses of OCR (Optical Character Recognition) systems and ask the user to type a word. So using them is difficult in tools such as PDAs (Personal Digital Assistant) or mobile phones that lack a complete keyboard. In this paper, a new CAPTCHA system is proposed for...

    , Article European Journal of Scientific Research ; Volume 45, Issue 2 , 2010 , Pages 310-323 ; 1450216X (ISSN) Balador, A ; Ghasemivand, M ; Movaghar, A ; Jabbehdari, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The IEEE 802.11 provides a MAC layer protocol for controlling competition among nodes to access the channel in wireless local area network. Recent works show that this standard has not suitable performances in mobile ad-hoc networks and especially in error prone channels. Many researchers proposed many algorithms to improve this standard like HBCWC (History Based Contention Window Control) scheme has significant performances but also has fairness problem. In this paper, we present a novel contentionbased protocol to improve fairness and throughput together. We use an array to keep history of network collision and based on array information, we optimize the contention window. The main point...

    Abstract
The problem of sensor placement for passive source localization under the non-line of sight signal propagation is considered in this paper. To this end, first we derive the Cramer-Rao lower bound for the time of arrival based source localization under non-line of sight conditions. Then, the optimal arrangement of sensors to achieve this lower bound is obtained in the two important cases with all of the receivers being non line of sight ones in the first case and a combination of line of sight and non-line of sight receivers in the 2nd case. © 2018 IEEE

Viscous fingering and its effect on areal sweep efficiency during waterflooding: an experimental study

    , Article Petroleum Science ; 2018 ; 16725107 (ISSN) Kargozarfard, Z ; Riazi, M ; Ayatollahi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
China University of Petroleum Beijing  2018
    Abstract
Viscous fingering is one of the main challenges that could reduce areal sweep efficiency during waterflooding in oil reservoirs. A series of waterflooding experiments were carried out in a Hele-Shaw cell at ambient temperature during which areal sweep efficiency was estimated and techniques to ease the fingering problem were examined. The onset and propagation of viscous fingers were monitored as a function of both injection rate and injection/production positions. Image processing techniques were utilized to quantitatively investigate the propagation of fingers. The experimental results show that, under specific conditions, increasing the number of finger branches could improve the areal...

Effects of RPL objective functions on the primitive characteristics of mobile and static IoT infrastructures

    , Article Microprocessors and Microsystems ; Volume 69 , 2019 , Pages 79-91 ; 01419331 (ISSN) Safaei, B ; Mohammad Salehi, A. A ; Hosseini Monazzah, A. M ; Ejlali, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The emergence of mobile IoT applications in recent years and the challenge of routing in their infrastructures have motivated scholars to propose appropriate routing mechanisms for such systems. Meanwhile, the IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low Power and Lossy Networks (RPL) is the standard routing protocol for IoT infrastructures. Nevertheless, RPL was mainly designed to comply with the primitive requirements of static IoT applications and it behaves poorly in confronting with the severe alterations in mobile conditions. The most important factor for such a poor behavior in mobile applications is the inappropriate design of OFs, which determine RPL's routing policies in the network. Therefore,...

Relaxation constant in the folding of thin viscoelastic sheets

    , Article Physical Review Applied ; Volume 13, Issue 1 , 2020 Farain, K ; Sharif University of Technology
    American Physical Society  2020
    Abstract
If one folds a thin viscoelastic sheet under an applied force, a line of plastic deformation is formed that shapes the sheet into an angle. This study determines parameters that define this angle and shows that, no matter how much load one applies, it is impossible to make angles less than a certain minimum angle in a definite time. Moreover, it is shown that regardless of whether the sheet is released freely afterward or kept under load, a logarithmic relaxation process follows the first deformation. The slope of this logarithm is the same in both conditions and depends neither on the applied force nor on the thickness of the sheet, which indicates that it is directly a probe of the...

    Abstract
Recently, IoT has been massively applied in different areas of human life. Meanwhile, in many of the IoT applications, e.g., the remote patient health-care monitoring systems, the reliability of communications, and the consumed energy in IoT devices, which are mostly battery-operated, are very challenging. Since IoT devices are typically operated in lossy environments, providing a reliable transmission for the packets imposes a noticeable amount of energy consumption. In addition, the runtime movement of the IoT devices in mobile networks further intensifies these issues. Therefore, the applied policies in the IPv6 RPL as the standard routing mechanism in IoT networks, play an important role...
