Performance optimization based on analytical modeling in a real-time system with constrained time/utility functions

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Computers ; Volume 60, Issue 8 , Aug , 2011 , Pages 1169-1181 ; 00189340 (ISSN) Kargahi, M ; Movaghar, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
We consider a single-processor firm real-time (FRT) system with exponential interarrival and execution times for jobs with relative deadlines following a general distribution. The scheduling policy of the system is first-come first-served (FCFS) and the capacity of the system is arbitrary. This system is subject to an arbitrary-shaped time/utility function (TUF), which determines the accrued utility of each job according to its completion time. It is considered that the system power consumption at different working states is predetermined for each processor speed. We have proposed an exact analytical method for the calculation of specific performance and power-related measures of the system....

Performance study of a supersonic inlet in the presence of a heat source

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 18, Issue 3 B , 2011 , Pages 375-382 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Soltani, M. R ; Farahani, M ; Sepahi Younsi, J ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
The flow over a supersonic inlet has been investigated experimentally and numerically at a free stream Mach number of 2 and a zero degree angle of attack. Wind tunnel tests were performed to obtain the performance parameters of the inlet and were used as a baseline and validation tools for the numerical code. A heat source was added to the flow field at a distance ahead of the inlet. The effect of heat source addition on the main performance parameters of the inlet is investigated numerically. Results show that the heat source considerably reduces drag coefficient; however, its effect on pressure recovery is not favorable. This unfavorable effect was then minimized by controlling heat source...

    Abstract
Different models have been proposed for deposition of asphaltene on reservoir rocks that due to complexity of asphaltene nature, most of them have not been productive. Here, a reliable model is proposed which despite of previous models, considers the change in asphaltene saturation in the core. The obtained experimental data in the laboratory was used for model validation. In this work, a series of core flooding tests was carried out in presence of connate water at different solvent-oil volume ratios. Pressure drop was measured at three different terminals along the core. The obtained experimental data as well as mass balance equations, momentum equation, asphaltene deposition and...

    Abstract
A novel semi-active control system for suspension systems of passenger car using Magnetorheological (MR) damper is introduced. The suspension system is considered as a mass-spring model with an eight-degrees-of-freedom, a passive damper and an active damper. The semi-active vibration control is designed to reduce the amplitude of automotive vibration caused by the alteration of road profile. The control mechanism is designed based on the optimal control algorithm, Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR). In this system, the damping coefficient of the shock absorber changes actively trough inducing magnetic field. It is observed that utilizing the present control algorithm may significantly reduce...

    Abstract
Standing-wave ultrasonic motors are a modern class of positioning systems, which are used to deliver a high precision linear or rotary motion with an unlimited stroke. The design process should be performed through an effective optimization algorithm in order to guaranty proper and efficient function of these motors. An optimization method of ultrasonic motors is proposed based on the combination of finite element method and factorial design as a design of experiments in this study. The results show the ability of this method in optimal design of ultrasonic motors especially those which have a complex structure and multi modes operation principle

    Abstract
We consider the design of an optimal natural-gas network. Our proposed network contains two echelons, Town Broad Stations (TBSs), and consumers (demand zones). Here, our aim is a two-stage cost minimization. We first determine locations of the TBS so that the location-allocation cost is minimized. Then, we show how to distribute the flow of gas among the TBS minimizing the flow cost by using Minimum Spanning Tree (MST). A case study in Mazandaran Gas Company in Iran is made to assess the validity and effectiveness of our proposed model

    Incremental labeling in closed-2PM model

    , Article Computers and Electrical Engineering ; Volume 36, Issue 5 , 2010 , Pages 895-901 ; 00457906 (ISSN) Rostamabadi, F ; Ghodsi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
We consider an incremental optimal label placement in a closed-2PM map containing points each attached with a label. Labels are assumed to be axis-parallel square-shaped and have to be pairwise disjoint with maximum possible length each attached to its corresponding point on one of its horizontal edges. Such a labeling is denoted as optimal labeling. Our goal is to efficiently generate a new optimal labeling for all points after each new point being inserted in the map. Inserting each point may require several labels to flip or all labels to shrink. We present an algorithm that generates each new optimal labeling in O(lgn+k) time where k is the number of required label flips, if there is no...

    Unstructured-coarse-grid generation usina backaround-grid approach

    , Article SPE Journal ; Volume 15, Issue 2 , 2010 , Pages 326-340 ; 1086055X (ISSN) Evazi, M ; Mahani, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
Reservoir flow simulation involves subdivision of the physical domain into a number of gridblocks. This is best accomplished with optimized gridpoint density and a minimized number of gridblocks, especially for coarse-grid generation from a fine-grid geological model. In any coarse-grid generation, proper distribution of gridpoints, which form the basis of numerical gridblocks, is a challenging task. We show that this can be achieved effectively by a novel grid-generation approach based on a background grid that stores gridpoint spacing parameters. Spacing parameter (L) can be described by Poisson's equation (▽2L = G), where the local density of gridpoints is controlled by a variable source...

The Pareto optimal solutions of the problem are found using a GA algorithm and finally a fuzzy satisfying method is applied to select the optimal solution considering the desires of the planner. The solutions of Pareto optimal front are analyzed to extract general useful information for planners about the appropriate DG technologies and placement schemes. The...

Economic production quantity model with scrapped items and limited production capacity

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 17, Issue 1 E , 2010 , Pages 58-69 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Taleizadeh, A ; Najafi, A. A ; Akhavan Niaki, S.T ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
In this paper, an Economic Production Quantity (EPQ) model is studied, in which the production defective-rate follows either a uniform or a normal probability distribution. Shortages are allowed and take a backorder state, and the existence of only one machine causes a limited production capacity for the common cycle length of all products. The aim of this research is to determine the optimal production quantity of each product, such that the expected total cost including holding, shortage, production, setup and defective items cost is minimized. The mathematical model of the problem is derived, for which the objective function is proved to be convex. Then, a derivative approach is utilized...

Modeling, simulation, and optimal initiation planning for needle insertion into the liver

    , Article Journal of Biomechanical Engineering ; Volume 132, Issue 4 , 2010 ; 01480731 (ISSN) Sharifi Sedeh, R ; Ahmadian, M. T ; Janabi Sharifi, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
Needle insertion simulation and planning systems (SPSs) will play an important role in diminishing inappropriate insertions into soft tissues and resultant complications. Difficulties in SPS development are due in large part to the computational requirements of the extensive calculations in finite element (FE) models of tissue. For clinical feasibility, the computational speed of SPSs must be improved. At the same time, a realistic model of tissue properties that reflects large and velocity-dependent deformations must be employed. The purpose of this study is to address the aforementioned difficulties by presenting a cost-effective SPS platform for needle insertions into the liver. The study...

    , Article Desalination ; Volume 251, Issue 1-3 , 2010 , Pages 20-28 ; 00119164 (ISSN) Hajipour, M ; Soltanieh, M ; Yazdanshenas, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
In the present work, numerical simulation of cross flow microfiltration of non-alcoholic beer in a tubular membrane has been studied theoretically and verified experimentally. Finite element method was used as a powerful tool for simulation. The feed stream, which flows mainly tangentially to the porous membrane surface, is modeled by the Navier-Stokes equations whereas the porous wall conditions are described by the Darcy equation that relates the pressure gradient within a flow stream to the flow rate through the permeable wall. A new model that considers transient behavior of the membrane due to fouling was used to estimate the permeate flux reduction. A pilot-scale cross flow membrane...

    Abstract
A mathematical model based on Kocks-Mecking-Bergstrom model, has been proposed to predict the flow behavior of age hardenable aluminum alloys, under different conditions of solution heat treatment and hot deformation. Considering the published literature, most researchers have taken into account the precipitation and solution strengthening contribution to the flow stress by a constant and some others have ignored these effects. So these available descriptions cannot be applicable directly to different conditions of solution heat treatment. In order to enable these constitutive descriptions to take into account the effects of soaking time and temperature, we introduce in this research a...

Optimizing shipment, ordering and pricing policies in a two-stage supply chain with price-sensitive demand

    , Article Transportation Research Part E: Logistics and Transportation Review ; Volume 45, Issue 4 , 2009 , Pages 564-571 ; 13665545 (ISSN) Sheikh Sajadieh, M ; Akbari Jokar, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper we focus on a two-stage supply chain consisting of one vendor and one buyer. We develop an integrated production-inventory-marketing model to determine the relevant profit-maximizing decision variable values. The model proposed is based on the joint total profit of both the vendor and the buyer, and it finds out the optimal ordering, shipment and pricing policies. We are able to ascertain the optimal decision variable values employing an analytical solution procedure. The numerical evidence suggests that it is more beneficial for the buyer and the vendor to cooperate with each other when the demand is more price sensitive. © 2008 Elsevier Ltd.
