    Abstract
The ability to speak lucidly plays a key role in social relations. Consequently, the role of the larynx is quite important, and timely diagnosis of laryngeal diseases has proved to be crucial. In this study, a simple computational model for inverse of speech production model is employed to extract the glottal waveform using speech signal. This waveform has useful information about vocal folds performance in terms of providing evidence for distinguishing pathological disorders. Furthermore, obtaining the significance of classification results is important, because it leads to reliable inferences. This study utilizes the sustained vowel sound /a/ and a well-referenced database, namely MEEI. In...

A high sensitive, low foot print, SU-8 material-based, light intensity modulated MOMS accelerometer

    , Article Optical Engineering ; Volume 61, Issue 5 , 2022 ; 00913286 (ISSN) Gholamzadeh, R ; Salarieh, H ; Parsanasab, G. M ; Akbari, J ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
A high sensitive optical MEMS accelerometer is proposed, which works by changing the effective refractive index of a microring relied on intensity modulation of light wave. The proposed optical sensing system consists of a microring, waveguide, and a proof mass. Acceleration causes lateral displacement of the proof mass. The proof mass is in the optical coupling length of the microring, and the displacement of the proof mass changes effective refractive index of the microring. Changes of the effective refractive index of the microring result in wavelength shift. The mechanical and optical parts of the proposed accelerometer are designed, and the obtained functional characteristics are...

Diverse set of exponential function solutions acquired relying on a map between the considered equation and an auxiliary ODE. Obtained solutions are recast in several hyperbolic and trigonometric forms based on different restrictions between parameters involved in equations and integration constants that appear in the solution. A few significant ones among the reported solutions are pictured to perceive the physical utility and peculiarity of the considered model using...

Towards high data-rate diffusive molecular communications: A review on performance enhancement strategies

    , Article Digital Signal Processing: A Review Journal ; Volume 124 , 2022 ; 10512004 (ISSN) Gursoy, M. C ; Nasiri Kenari, M ; Mitra, U ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Inc  2022
    Abstract
Diffusive molecular communications (DiMC) have recently gained attention as a candidate for nano- to micro- and macro-scale communications due to its simplicity and energy efficiency. As signal propagation is solely enabled by Brownian motion mechanics, DiMC faces severe inter-symbol interference (ISI), which limits reliable and high data-rate communications. Herein, recent literature on DiMC performance enhancement strategies is surveyed; key research directions are identified. Signaling design and associated design constraints are presented. Studies on fundamental information theoretic limits of DiMC channel are reviewed. Classical and novel transceiver designs are discussed with an...

    Abstract
Integrated treatment planning for cancer patients has high importance in intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT). Direct aperture optimization (DAO) is one of the prominent approaches used in recent years to attain this goal. Considering a set of beam directions, DAO is an integrated approach to optimize the intensity and leaf position of apertures in each direction. In this paper, first, a mixed integer-nonlinear mathematical formulation for the DAO problem in IMRT treatment planning is presented. Regarding the complexity of the problem, two well-known metaheuristic algorithms, particle swarm optimization (PSO) and differential evolution (DE), are utilized to solve the model. The...

    Abstract
Because of the low outflow temperature of the conventional photovoltaic thermal systems and lack of electrical production of the solar thermal collectors, a novel combined system is proposed to solve the two mentioned drawbacks. This novel system is achieved by connecting a photovoltaic thermal unit to a solar thermal collector in series. To increase the overall performance of this novel combined system, different hybrid nanofluids include (1) multiwall carbon nanotube-aluminum oxide (2) multiwall carbon nanotube-silicon carbide (3) graphene-aluminum oxide, and (4) graphene-silicon carbide are compared. The investigation is performed based on the three-dimensional simulation, and the...

    Abstract
Due to size minimization and increment in the frequency of electronic devices, efficient and reliable methods for thermal management are required to reduce operating temperature, enhance stability, increase lifetime and user comfort. To prevent the damages of leakage and corrosion which occur in conventional heat sinks, proposing innovative thermal management methods has always been welcomed. Regarding these issues and based on the energy storage unit concept, in this study, a passive heat sink (HS) is fabricated and characterized for electronic chipset cooling with heat fluxes of 2000 to 4000 W/m2 utilizing phase change material (PCM) and nano-additive PCM (NPCM). The presented cooling...

    Abstract
Photothermally heated and mesh-gridded membrane distillation (PHMD) system is proposed for desalination of high saline aqueous solutions. A triple-layered membrane, composed of a photothermal top nanofibrous layer containing polyacrylonitrile and dispersed carbon black nanoparticles and a polyvinylidene fluoride porous membrane supported on a nonwoven polyester, was prepared. A polypropylene mesh was used to hold the membrane. A 3D numerical simulation of the PHMD system was carried out by COMSOL and the appropriate length of the membrane module was determined. The effects of various operating parameters including solar radiation intensity on the permeate flux and thermal efficiency were...

Remote monitoring and control of the 2-DoF robotic manipulators over the internet

    , Article Robotica ; Volume 40, Issue 12 , 2022 , Pages 4475-4497 ; 02635747 (ISSN) Hokmi, S ; Haghi, S ; Farhadi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Cambridge University Press  2022
    Abstract
This article is concerned with remote monitoring and control of the 2-degrees of freedom (DoF) robotic manipulators, which have nonlinear dynamics over the packet erasure channel, which is an abstract model for communication over the Internet, WiFi, or Zigbee modules. This type of communication is subject to imperfections, such as random packet dropout and rate distortion. These imperfections cause a significant challenge for monitoring and control of robotic manipulators in the industrial environments because sensitive data, such as sensor data and control commands may not ever reach to their destination resulting in significant performance degradation. Therefore, the effects of these...

    Abstract
In This paper, a simple single-dimension Space Vector Modulation (SVM) technique is introduced to implement on three-phase thirteen-level Modified Packed U-Cell (MPUC) inverter for photo-voltaic system in which many DC sources are avail-able. The three-phase thirteen-level converter con-sists of three single-phase seven-level MPUCs that each phase has six switches and two isolated DC sources. One major advantage of proposed method is to produce an output voltage with nearly constant amplitude in desired range in case of input DC voltage fluctuations, which is common in renewable sources like Photovoltaic Systems (PV). On the other hand, the conventional Pulse Width Modulation (PWM)...

All-optical recurrent neural network with reconfigurable activation function

, Article IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics ; 2022 , Pages 1-1 ; 1077260X (ISSN) Ebrahimi Dehghanpour, A ; Koohi, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Optical Neural Networks (ONNs) can be promising alternatives for conventional electrical neural networks as they offer ultra-fast data processing with low energy consumption. However, lack of suitable nonlinearity is standing in their road of achieving this goal. While this problem can be circumvented in feed-forward neural networks, the performance of the recurrent neural networks (RNNs) depends heavily on their nonlinearity. In this paper, we first propose and numerically demonstrate a novel reconfigurable optical activation function, named ROA, based on adding or subtracting the outputs of two saturable absorbers (SAs). RAO can provide both bounded and unbounded outputs by facilitating an...
