    , Article 16th Asian Regional Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, ARC 2019, 14 October 2019 through 18 October 2019 ; 2020 Haeri, S. M ; Afzalsoltani, S ; Sharif University of Technology
Asian Regional Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering  2020
    Abstract
During recent years, extensive studies have been conducted around the world documenting liquefaction induced lateral spreading and its effects on deep foundations. This study is aimed to numerically model a shaking table experiment, to investigate the effect of lateral spreading on piles and also to assess the capability of an advanced critical state two-surface plasticity model in predicting soil and pile responses to lateral spreading. Changes in permeability of the soil layers during the shaking are also accounted for using the software's built-in programming language, FISH. Numerical results showed that the onset of liquefaction occurs after just a few cycles from the beginning of the...

Subdomain model for predicting the performance of linear resolver considering end effect and slotting effect

    , Article IEEE Sensors Journal ; Volume 20, Issue 24 , 2020 , Pages 14747-14755 Paymozd, A ; Saneie, H ; Nasiri Gheidari, Z ; Tootoonchian, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Linear position sensors are essential parts of linear motion control systems. Among different linear sensors, linear resolvers are an appropriate choice for harsh environments. Design optimization of linear resolvers needs an accurate, but computationally fast model for their performance prediction. Slotting effect of the cores and end effect are two important phenomena that must be accurately involved in the model to ensure its reliable results. Therefore, in this paper a semi-analytical model based on subdomain modeling technique is proposed for linear resolvers. Then, according to the developed model, the induced voltages in the signal windings of the resolver are calculated and...

Delay-Optimal cooperation policy in a slotted aloha full-duplex wireless network: static approach

    , Article IEEE Systems Journal ; Volume 14, Issue 2 , 2020 , Pages 2257-2268 Vaezi, K ; Ashtiani, F ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2020
    Abstract
We consider a cooperative wireless communication network comprising two full-duplex (FD) nodes transmitting to a common destination based on slotted Aloha protocol. Each node has exogenous arrivals and also may relay some of the unsuccessfully transmitted packets of the other node. In this article, we find the optimal static policies of nodes in order to minimize the sum of the average transmission delays, while the average transmission delay of each node is constrained. The static policy of each node specifies the probability of accepting an unsuccessfully transmitted packet of the other node and how the node prioritizes its transmissions. We show that in the optimal policies, just the node...

Causal description of the interaction of a two-level atom with a classical field

    , Article Physica Scripta ; Volume 78, Issue 3 , 28 August , 2008 ; 00318949 (ISSN) Mousavi, S. V ; Golshani, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
We discuss the Bohmian paths of two-level atoms moving in a waveguide through an external resonance-producing field, perpendicular to the waveguide and localized in a region of finite diameter. The time spent by a particle in a potential region is not well-defined in standard quantum mechanics, but it is well defined in Bohmian mechanics. Bohm's theory is used for calculating the average time spent by a transmitted particle inside the field region and the arrival-time distributions at the edges of the field region. Using the Runge-Kutta method for the integration of the guidance law, some Bohmian trajectories were also calculated. Numerical results are presented for the special case of a...

    , Article 2008 IEEE International RF and Microwave Conference, RFM 2008, Kuala Lumpur, 2 December 2008 through 4 December 2008 ; April , 2008 , Pages 46-48 ; 9781424428663 (ISBN) Tajdini, M. M ; Shishegar, A. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
In this paper, a novel closed form expression is derived to find the Green's function of a horizontal electric current in a parallel-plate waveguide. It is achieved by expanding the Green's function into a series of Gaussian functions. This new method is called the Gaussian Green's function (GGF) method. The main advantage of the GGF method lies in its precision as well as rapid convergence. Numerical results confirm that the closed form expression yields less than 0.2% error compared to the numerical integration of the spectral integral. Furthermore, it is verified that this method can be in excellent agreement with the complex images (CI) method. © 2008 IEEE

    Abstract
The taping mode Atomic Force Microscopic (T-AFM) can be assumed as a cantilever beam which its base is excited by a sinusoidal force and nonlinear potential interaction with sample. Thus the cantilever may cause chaotic behavior which decreases the performance of the sample topography. In order to modeling, using the galerkin method, the PDE equation is reduced to a single ODE equation which properly describing the continuous beam. In this paper a nonlinear delayed feedback control is proposed to control chaos in T-AFM system. Assuming model parameters uncertainties, the first order Unstable Periodic Orbits (UPOs) of the system is stabilized using the sliding nonlinear delayed feedback...

On Coordination of Smart Grid and Cooperative Cloud Providers

    , Article IEEE Systems Journal ; Volume 15, Issue 1 , 2021 , Pages 672-683 ; 19328184 (ISSN) Mohebbi Moghaddam, M ; Manshaei, M. H ; Naderi Soorki, M ; Saad, W ; Goudarzi, M ; Niyato, D ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Cooperative cloud providers in the form of cloud federations can potentially reduce their energy costs by exploiting electricity price fluctuations across different locations. In this environment, on the one hand, the electricity price has a significant influence on the federations formed, and, thus, on the profit earned by the cloud providers, and on the other hand, the cloud cooperation has an inevitable impact on the performance of the smart grid. In this regard, the interaction between independent cloud providers and the smart grid is modeled as a two-stage Stackelberg game interleaved with a coalitional game in this article. In this game, in the first stage the smart grid, as a leader...

Reliability modeling of multistate degraded power electronic converters with simultaneous exposure to dependent competing failure processes

    , Article IEEE Access ; Volume 9 , 2021 , Pages 67096-67108 ; 21693536 (ISSN) Samavatian, V ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Dehghanian, P ; Blaabjerg, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Depending on the application in which power electronic converters (PECs) are deployed, failure processes may endanger the desirable performance of PECs. This paper offers holistic insights on reliability modeling of PECs considering dependencies in two simultaneous failure processes, namely gradual wearing-out degradation and vibration sudden degradation. While sudden and gradual degradation processes may individually affect the useful lifetime of PECs, their mutual interdependencies could significantly accelerate the aging mechanisms. A new analytical model for reliability assessment of PECs is proposed that can capture such mutual interdependence of simultaneous failure processes. The...

    Abstract
In this research, electrically characteristics of a graphene nanoplatelet (GPL)-reinforced composite (GPLRC) microdisk are explored using generalized differential quadrature method. Also, the current microstructure is coupled with a piezoelectric actuator (PIAC). The extended form of Halpin–Tsai micromechanics is used to acquire the elasticity of the structure, whereas the variation of thermal expansion, Poisson’s ratio, and density through the thickness direction is determined by the rule of mixtures. Hamilton’s principle is implemented to establish governing equations and associated boundary conditions of the GPLRC microdisk joint with PIAC. The compatibility conditions are satisfied by...

Analytical and numerical biaxial bending analysis of deepwater riser due to vortex-induced vibration

, Article Journal of Marine Science and Technology (Japan) ; 2021 ; 09484280 (ISSN) Tabeshpour, M. R ; Komachi, Y ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer Japan  2021
    Abstract
Previous studies of analysis and prediction of marine risers responses usually focus on vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of cross-flow (CF) direction rather than in-line (IL). Recent studies show that responses of IL direction tend to dominate in some cases. Responses of long riser due to biaxial bending of IL and CF VIV are investigated. Closed-form formulas are derived for estimating maximum normal stress due to the biaxial moment of CF/IL VIV and relations for estimating biaxial stress using CF values are presented. Analytical results are compared with numerical results of the time domain model and a good correlation is observed. It is shown that for tension and bending-controlled modes of...

Numerical evaluation of the ultimate load of concrete funicular shells of circular plan

, Article Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers: Structures and Buildings ; Volume 174, Issue 1 , 2021 , Pages 5-11 ; 09650911 (ISSN) Javid, A ; Mofid, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    ICE Publishing  2021
    Abstract
A special type of shell structure - a concrete shallow funicular shell of circular plan - is considered in this paper. Funicular shells carry their dead weight only by in-plane compression forces. Numerical analysis of funicular shells was performed using the non-linear finite-element method, considering both geometric and material non-linearities. A circular-plan concrete funicular shell unit was also constructed and its ultimate central concentrated load is determined. The ultimate load of the shell unit predicted by the numerical model was very close to the experimentally determined ultimate load, thus confirming the validity of the numerical model. The numerical results revealed the...

A rate-dependent constitutive equation for 5052 aluminum diaphragms

    , Article Materials and Design ; Vol. 60, Issue 1 , 2014 , pp. 13-20 ; ISSN: 02613069 Hosseini Kordkheili, S. A ; Ashrafian, M. M ; Toozandehjani, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this article, both experimental and numerical approaches are conducted to present a constitutive equation for 5052 aluminum diaphragms under quasi-static strain rate loadings. For this purpose the stress-strain curves at different strain rates are obtained using tensile tests. Brittle behavior during tensile tests is observed due to samples thin thicknesses. Employing Johnson-Cook constitutive equation no yields in reasonable agreement with these tensile tests results. Therefore, developing a more suitable constitutive equation for aluminum diaphragms is taken into consideration. This equation is then implemented into the commercial finite element software, ABAQUS, via a developed user...

    Abstract
In this research, a finite element model was developed in order to simulate the two-step residual stress distribution of a thermal barrier coating system, considered to be used in diesel engine cylinder head, with a real roughness and real porosity. Two steps including the bond coat and the top coat deposition processes were taken into account. The real geometry of coating layers, including the roughness and the porosity, was also considered based on a scanning electron microscopy image. Then, effects of the convective heat transfer coefficient and initial substrate and substrate/bond coat preheating temperatures on the residual stress were studied. Obtained results illustrate that the...

    , Article Materials and Design ; Vol. 56 , April , 2014 , pp. 245-253 ; ISSN: 02641275 Farrahi, G. H ; Shamloo, A ; Felfeli, M ; Azadi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this article, numerical simulations of cyclic behaviors in light alloys are conducted under isothermal and thermo-mechanical fatigue loadings. For this purpose, an aluminum alloy (A356) which is widely used in cylinder heads and a magnesium alloy (AZ91) which can be applicable in cylinder heads are considered to study their stress-strain hysteresis loops. Two plasticity approaches including the Chaboche's hardening model and the Nagode's spring-slider model are applied to simulate cyclic behaviors. To validate obtained results, strain-controlled fatigue tests are performed under low cycle and thermo-mechanical fatigue loadings. Numerical results demonstrate a good agreement with...

Presentation and application of tunable reciprocal/nonreciprocal metamaterial transmission line based on edge-guided mode

    , Article Electromagnetics ; Volume 33, Issue 3 , Mar , 2013 , Pages 234-248 ; 02726343 (ISSN) Ghalibafan, J ; Komjani, N ; Rejaei, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
This article proposes a tunable composite right-/left-handed transmission line consisting of a transversely magnetized ferrite substrate periodically loaded by microstrip inductors. The gapless transition between the left- and right-handed bands (balanced response) is the main characteristic of this structure. This composite right-/left-handed transmission line is proposed in both reciprocal and nonreciprocal versions. Based on periodic structure analysis, the dispersion relation is estimated theoretically and validated numerically by the finite-element method in the reciprocal case. Theoretical and numerical results demonstrate the tunability of the proposed structures by changing the DC...

    Abstract
In this study, the effect of cone angle on the flow field and separation efficiency of deoiling hydrocyclones is investigated taking advantage of large eddy simulation. The dynamic Smagorinsky is employed to determine the residual stress tensor of the continuous phase. The method of Lagrangian particle tracking with an optimized search algorithm (closest cell) is applied to evaluate the separation efficiency of deoiling hydrocyclone. Simulations are performed on a 35-mm deoiling hydrocyclone with the three different cone angles of 6, 10 and 20 degree. The numerical results revealed that the changes in the cone angle would affect the velocity and pressure distribution inside hydrocyclone, and...

Lateral translation of an inextensible circular membrane embedded in a transversely isotropic half-space

    , Article European Journal of Mechanics, A/Solids ; Volume 39 , 2013 , Pages 134-143 ; 09977538 (ISSN) Eskandari, M ; Shodja, H. M ; Ahmadi, S. F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
The asymmetric problem of lateral translation of an inextensible circular membrane embedded in a transversely isotropic half-space is addressed. With the aid of appropriate Green's functions, the governing equations of the problem are written as a set of coupled integral equations. With further mathematical transformations, the system of dual integral equations is reduced to two coupled Fredholm integral equations of the second kind which are amenable to numerical treatments. The exact closed-form solutions corresponding to two limiting cases of a membrane resting on the surface of a half-space and embedded in a full-space are derived. The jump behavior of results at the edge of the membrane...

Adaptive access and rate control of CSMA for energy, rate, and delay optimization

    , Article Eurasip Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking ; Volume 2012 , 2012 ; 16871472 (ISSN) Khodaian, M ; Pérez, J ; Khalaj, B. H ; Crespo, P. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
In this article, we present a cross-layer adaptive algorithm that dynamically maximizes the average utility function. A per stage utility function is defined for each link of a carrier sense multiple access-based wireless network as a weighted concave function of energy consumption, smoothed rate, and smoothed queue size. Hence, by selecting weights we can control the trade-off among them. Using dynamic programming, the utility function is maximized by dynamically adapting channel access, modulation, and coding according to the queue size and quality of the time-varying channel. We show that the optimal transmission policy has a threshold structure versus the channel state where the optimal...
