    Abstract
High-efficiency Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs) are widely used in industry. Subsequently, resolvers' employment is increasing in the drive of PMSMs. Measuring the rotor angle using a resolver needs a costly Resolver to Digital Converter (RDC). Therefore, a low-cost analog RDC is designed against the conventional Angle Tracking Observers (ATOs) in the following study. The designed RDC has satisfactory accuracy, simplicity, and enduring against excitation frequency. Firstly, an overview of the resolver is shown, and subsequently, the circuit of the designed RC is described thoroughly. Ultimately, the simulations' outcomes are displayed, and comparing our design with others...

    Abstract
A matrix converter is a voltage/current source AC/AC frequency converter. In grid-connected operation of a variable-speed permanent magnet synchronous wind power generator, the matrix converter is normally controlled as a voltage source converter. In this control method, the generator-side voltage is synthesized from the grid-side voltage source. However, in the stand-alone mode of operation, the grid-side stiff voltage source is not available, and the input filter of the matrix converter is unstable. In this article, a new control method is presented that controls a permanent magnet synchronous wind generator in a stand-alone mode with a matrix converter as a current source converter. The...

    Abstract
Accurate position estimation is an integral part of any motion control system. Besides, instantaneous position of poles plays an important role in electronic drive system of modern PM machines. Resolvers, due to their structure, are the most reliable position sensors in harsh environments. However, resolvers are not as accurate as optical encoders in normal conditions. To increase the accuracy of these sensors, various solutions are used, such as optimization in winding arrangement, rotor and stator contour, slot-pole combinations, and improvements in resolver-to-digital converter. In this paper, fractional slot concentrated winding is used in an axial flux resolver. By the aid of winding...

In this paper, a metaheuristic optimization algorithm is used to minimize total harmonic distortion of the output signals, and consequently the estimated position error in concentrated coil wound field resolvers. Meanwhile, to minimize total coil numbers, manufacturing costs, and complexity of the winding process, modified objective function and constraints are proposed. In this way, a modified winding function method is employed for performance analysis of the axial flux...

    Abstract
Resolvers as position sensors need a high frequency AC excitation voltage, and the induced voltage in their 2-phase perpendicular windings are amplitude modulated (AM) signals. For calculating the position, it is required to demodulated the output signals and calculate their envelopes. Then, inverse tangent can be used for calculating the position. Despite the advantages of resolvers, there are some drawbacks in their application. Calculating the envelopes is always one of the deep concerns in using resolvers. Furthermore, due to low-amplitude of the excitation flux, the performance of the resolvers is strongly affected by electromagnetic interference by the stray fields of motor and brake....

    Abstract
High pole number permanent magnet (PM) motors, due to their high torque density, have been receiving considerable attentions in recent years. To achieve an accurate position control in PM machines, resolvers are suggested for industrial applications. Mechanical and electromagnetic considerations in the case of high pole number resolvers lead the machine designers to choose small cores with low slot numbers. This paper proposes two different on-tooth winding configurations to achieve high pole number without increasing the slot numbers, while the accuracy of the detected position is intended to be the maximum value. Variable turn on tooth winding (VTTW) is compared with fractional slot...

Sensor-Less Control of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor Using High Frequency Signal Injection

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghazi Moghadam, Mohammad Ali (Author) ; Tahami, Farzad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis one of the sensorless methods which exploits the existing anisotropies of the rotor is utilized to estimate rotor position. In order to implement this method, first a high frequency voltage is injected in a specific, time-varying direction and then the corresponding current response would be observed in order to estimate the rotor saliency position. The estimation of rotor position would be more precise as the magnetic anisotropy due to rotor saliency increases and as a result the effect of noise and different disturbances in estimation of rotor position would be decresed. The effect of stator resistence is one of these disturbances which is usually neglected as a result of...

Speed Control of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor with Flexible Coupling Using Load Torque Observer

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Riahi, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Tahami, Farzad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Elastic joints in 2-mass drive systems, because of their limited stiffness, can decrease the performance of the control system and lead to motor and load speed oscillation. Shaft torque ignoring can also stress both mechanical and electrical drive components. Because of low degree of freedom, conventional controllers, such as the PI controllers, cannot improve the performance of the system and keep the system stable at the same time. In this thesis, the dynamic response and stability of the 2-mass systems is improved using state controller. State estimation of 2-mass system is required for state space controller . In the thesis, different state observer is analyzed and compared with each...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Abedini Mohamadi, Abdolmajid (Author) ; Oraee Mirzamani, Hashem (Supervisor) ; Taghipour Boroujeni, Samad (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
In the presented dissertation an analytical model is developed for the air gap flux density and the cogging torque in the axial flux surface-mounted PM machines. The slotting effect is taken into account in the magnetic flux distribution. The model is derived from solving the 2D Poisson' equation in the slotted air gap. To simplify the solution process, the concept of the uniqueness theorem is used to replace the slotted air gap by a slotless one and some surface current distribution. In addition, the separation of variables method is applied to the analytical solution of the Poisson equation. However, the proposed 2D analytical model is developed for the quasi 3D model by the well-known...

Low Cost Sensor-Less Control of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor for Home Appliances

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hosseinyar, Hossein (Author) ; Tahami, Farzad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Proper operation of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) requires rotor position information. Commonly a rotor position sensor, such as optical encoder or resolver, is used for this purpose. These sensors add cost, weight and degrade reliability of the drive system. Using position and speed sensors for control of PMSM’s in home appliances is not cost effective. In this thesis, a novel method for predicting position of the rotor and winding inductance of the permanent magnet synchronous machine has been presented. In this method, machine anisotropy is utilized for rotor position estimation purposes like what in the high frequency injection techniques. Each leg of the PWM inverter...
