    Abstract
Interfacial studies and band alignment engineering on the electron transport layer (ETL) play a key role for fabrication of high-performance perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, an amorphous layer of SnO2 (a-SnO2) between the TiO2 ETL and the perovskite absorber is inserted and the charge transport properties of the device are studied. The double-layer structure of TiO2 compact layer (c-TiO2) and a-SnO2 ETL leads to modification of interface energetics, resulting in improved charge collection and decreased carrier recombination in PSCs. The optimized device based on a-SnO2/c-TiO2 ETL shows a maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 21.4% as compared to 19.33% for c-TiO2 based device....

    Abstract
Organic-inorganic perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have gained considerable attention owing to their impressive photovoltaic properties and simple device manufacturing. In general, PSC employs a perovskite absorber material sandwiched between an electron and hole selective transport layer optimized with respect to optimal band alignment, efficient charge collection, and low interfacial recombination. The interfaces between the perovskite absorber and respective selective contacts play a crucial role in determining photovoltaic performance and stability of PSCs. However, a fundamental understanding is lacking, and there is poor understanding in controlling the physical processes at the...

    Abstract
All current highest efficiency perovskite solar cells (PSCs) use highly toxic, halogenated solvents, such as chlorobenzene (CB) or toluene (TLN), in an antisolvent step or as solvent for the hole transporter material (HTM). A more environmentally friendly antisolvent is highly desirable for decreasing chronic health risk. Here, the efficacy of anisole (ANS), as a greener antisolvent for highest efficiency PSCs, is investigated. The fabrication inside and outside of the glovebox showing high power conversion efficiencies of 19.9% and 15.5%, respectively. Importantly, a fully nonhalogenated solvent system is demonstrated where ANS is used as both the antisolvent and the solvent for the HTM....

    Abstract
Carbon based perovskite solar cells have been constructed by screen-printing three subsequent mesoporous layers of Titania, Zirconia and Carbon without a hole transporting layer and by infiltration of perovskite liquid precursor through the layers. Cell efficiency was optimized by varying the thickness of the three layers and the composition of the inks employed for screen printing. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was employed as a guide in the search for layer thickness optimization. All cell construction and testing was carried out under ambient conditions of 20–30% humidity. The cells were not encapsulated. The best cell gave an efficiency of 10.7%. All cells demonstrated a...

Modeling the time-dependent characteristics of perovskite solar cells

    , Article Solar Energy ; Volume 170 , 2018 , Pages 969-973 ; 0038092X (ISSN) Moeini, I ; Ahmadpour, M ; Mosavi, A ; Alharbi, N ; Gorji, N. E ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
We proposed two different time-dependent modeling approaches for variation of device characteristics of perovskite solar cells under stress conditions. The first approach follows Sah-Noyce-Shockley (SNS) model based on Shockley–Read–Hall recombination/generation across the depletion width of pn junction and the second approach is based on thermionic emission model for Schottky diodes. The connecting point of these approaches to time variation is the time-dependent defect generation in depletion width (W) of the junction. We have fitted the two models with experimental data reported in the literature to perovskite solar cell and found out that each model has a superior explanation for...

    Abstract
The identification of recombination centers in perovskite solar cells is highly challenging. Here, we demonstrate the red and blue excitation wavelength resolved impedance response in state-of-the-art perovskite solar cells (PSCs) providing insights into charge recombination and ion accumulation. To get insight into the interfacial electronic characteristics, we fabricated PSCs with a planar architecture containing state-of-the-art triple-cation perovskite materials as absorber layers. The capacitance-frequency response under various blue and red illumination conditions were used to investigate interfacial charge accumulations and found that under high energy photons irradiation maximum...

    Abstract
Inverted organometal halide perovskite solar cells of p-i-n architecture allow for the employment of inorganic components that ensure longer time stability than organic charge transporters. This has been demonstrated in the present work where devices were made by employing NiO/GO and Li-modified GO/TiOx as hole and electron transporters, respectively, in comparison with popular organic components, such as PEDOT:PSS and PCBM. Cells made in the FTO/PEDOT:PSS/Perovskite/PCBM/Al composition were 25% more efficient than cells made in the FTO/NiO/GO/Perovskite/GO-Li/TiOx/Al composition but the latter was markedly more stable than the former. Emphasis has been presently given to the...

    Abstract
CH3 NH3 PbI3 (MAPbI3) thin film solar cells, which are reported at laboratory efficiency scale of nearly 22%, are the subject of much attention by energy researchers due to their low cost buildup, acceptable efficiency, high absorption coefficient and diffusion length. The main purpose of this research is to simulate the structure of thin film perovskite solar cells through numerical simulation of SCAPS based on the empirical data for different hole transport layers. After simulating the initial structure of FTO/TiO2/CH3NH3PbI3/Spiro-OMeTAD solar cell, the hole transport layer Spiro-OMeTAD thickness was optimized on a small scale using modeling. The researchers also sought to reduce the...

    Abstract
Herein, we report a modified two-step method to construct a uniform and pinhole-free polycrystalline perovskite film with large grains up to the microscale using lead mixed-halide (PbI2-PbCl2) precursor solutions to guarantee the device functioning. Commonly used sequential deposition methods based on dip- and spin-coatings are combined with a vapor-assisted solution process to improve the perovskite morphology and tune the residual lead mixed-halides. These can enhance the optical absorption and efficiency of perovskite solar cell (PSC) devices. The impact of the Cl content in the lead mixed-halide precursors and the employed preparation methods on the photovoltaic performance of PSCs are...

    Abstract
A NiOx−graphene oxide (NiOx−GO) hybrid has been prepared by a simple solution-processed method and was used as hole-extraction material in perovskite solar cells with either gold or carbon as back contact electrode. The impact of GO content on the optoelectronic behavior of NiOx and the photovoltaic performance of the fabricated devices has been studied. Thus, GO incorporation showed a significant improvement in the performance of NiOx-based devices. The best attained efficiency was 13.3%, and it was 45% higher than that with pure NiOx. This is attributed to a significant improvement in the hole extraction, recombination resistance, and energy-level matching in comparison to pure NiOx. In...

Functional perovskite solar cells can be made by using a simple, inexpensive and stable soluble tetra-n-butyl-substituted copper phthalocyanine (CuBuPc) as a hole transporter. In the present study, TiO2/reduced graphene oxide (T/RGO) hybrids were synthesized via an in situ solvothermal process and used as electron acceptor/transport mediators in mesoscopic perovskite solar cells based on soluble CuBuPc as a hole transporter and on graphene oxide (GO) as a buffer layer. The impact of the RGO content on the optoelectronic properties of T/RGO hybrids and on the solar cell performance was studied, suggesting improved electron transport characteristics and photovoltaic parameters. An enhanced...

    Abstract
Identifying and reducing the dominant recombination processes in perovskite solar cells is one of the major challenges for further device optimization. Here, we show that introducing a thin interlayer of poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PVP) between the perovskite film and the hole transport layer reduces nonradiative recombination. Employing such a PVP interlayer, we reach an open-circuit voltage of 1.20 V for the best devices and a stabilized efficiency of 20.7%. The beneficial effect of the PVP interlayer is proven by statistical analysis of various samples, many of those showing an open-circuit voltage larger than 1.17 V, and a 30 mV increase in average compared to unmodified samples. The reduced...

    Abstract
In the past few years, organic–inorganic metal halide ABX3 perovskites (A = Rb, Cs, methylammonium, formamidinium (FA); B = Pb, Sn; X = Cl, Br, I) have rapidly emerged as promising materials for photovoltaic applications. Tuning the film morphology by various deposition techniques and additives is crucial to achieve solar cells with high performance and long-term stability. In this work, carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) containing functional groups are added to the perovskite precursor solution for fabrication of fluorine-doped tin oxide/TiO2/perovskite/spiro-OMeTAD/gold devices. With the addition of CNPs, the perovskite films are thermally more stable, contain larger grains, and become more...

Mesoscopic oxide double layer as electron specific contact for highly efficient and UV stable perovskite photovoltaics

    , Article Nano Letters ; Volume 18, Issue 4 , 2018 , Pages 2428-2434 ; 15306984 (ISSN) Tavakoli, M. M ; Giordano, F ; Zakeeruddin, S. M ; Gratzel, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The solar to electric power conversion efficiency (PCE) of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has recently reached 22.7%, exceeding that of competing thin film photovoltaics and the market leader polycrystalline silicon. Further augmentation of the PCE toward the Shockley-Queisser limit of 33.5% warrants suppression of radiationless carrier recombination by judicious engineering of the interface between the light harvesting perovskite and the charge carrier extraction layers. Here, we introduce a mesoscopic oxide double layer as electron selective contact consisting of a scaffold of TiO2 nanoparticles covered by a thin film of SnO2, either in amorphous (a-SnO2), crystalline (c-SnO2), or...

Vapor assisted deposition of alkaline doped perovskites: Pure phase formation of CsxMA1−xPbI3

    , Article Electrochimica Acta ; Volume 259 , 2018 , Pages 485-491 ; 00134686 (ISSN) Sedighi, R ; Tajabadi, F ; Taghavinia, N ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Alkaline doping (Cs, Rb) in CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPbI3) is known to enhance the stability of perovskite solar cells. The films are usually deposited using anti-solvent method, which is tricky and not applicable for large scale deposition. Besides, in case of CsxMA1−xPbI3 the amount of Cs must be carefully controlled to prevent CsI phase formation. Herein, we report an atmospheric pressure vapor assisted solution process (AP-VASP) for the growth of Cs doped MAPbI3 perovskite films that features highly uniform morphology, pin-hole free films, large grain size, as well as being scalable. The CsxMA1−xPbI3 films are formed by the reaction of Cs doped PbI2 films with MAI vapor in a simple oven. We...

    Abstract
Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted significant attention due to their excellent efficiency reaching 22.1% in just the past few years. Despite their high efficiency, the limited long-term stability of PSCs has to be overcome. Moisture environments has been recognized as a main degradation pathway of perovskite materials. This review summarizes recent studies about relationship of the stability of PSCs with moisture environment. We also discuss the current standard strategies for enhancing the stability of PSCs by modifying the properties of either the perovskite material itself or its interfaces. © 2018

    Abstract
In this research, we employed transient photo-voltage rise and decay measurements to investigate the origin of slow unsymmetrical rise and decay profiles in single and triple cation perovskite solar cells. Drastic changes in photo-voltage decay profile were observed upon insertion of Br−, Cs+ and FA+ ions into perovskite structures. In order to explain our observations, the activation energy for ionic defects was measured and an equivalent circuit model was proposed containing both electrical and ionic components. The electrical branch consists of a diode, the bulk capacitance and resistances for charge transport and recombination. In parallel we introduced an ionic branch describing the...

    Abstract
The effect of substitutional Li doping into NiOx hole transporting layer (HTL) for use in inverted perovskite solar cells was systematically studied. Li doped NiOx thin films with preferential crystal growth along the (111) plane were deposited using a simple solution-based process. Mott-Schottky analysis showed that hole carrier concentration (NA) is doubled by Li doping. Utilizing 4 % Li in NiOx improved the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of solar devices from 9.0 % to 12.6 %. Photoluminescence quenching investigations demonstrate better hole capturing properties of Li:NiOx compared to that of NiOx, leading to higher current densities by Li doping. The electrical conductivity of NiOx is...

Hole transport material based on modified N-annulated perylene for efficient and stable perovskite solar cells

    Abstract
N-annulated perylene based materials show outstanding and tunable optical and physical properties, making them suitable to be charge transport materials for optoelectronic applications. However, this type of materials has so far not been well studied in solar cells. Here, we develop a new hole transport material (HTM), namely S5, based on perylene building block terms, for organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs). We have systematically studied the influences of the film thickness of S5 on their photovoltaic performance, and a low concentration of S5 with a thinner HTM film is favorable for obtaining higher solar cell efficiency. S5 shows excellent energy alignment with...

    Abstract
Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are one of the most promising emerging energy-conversion technologies because of their high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) and potentially low fabrication cost. To improve PCE, it is necessary to develop PSCs with good interfacial engineering to reduce the trap states and carrier transport barriers present at the various interfaces of the PSCs' architecture. This work reports a facile method to improve the interface between the perovskite absorber layer and the hole transport layer (HTL) by adding a small amount of acetonitrile (ACN) in the Spiro-OMeTAD precursor solution. This small amount of ACN dissolves the surface of the perovskite layer, allowing the...
