    Abstract
Background: Human amniotic membrane grafting could be potentially useful in ocular surface complications due to tissue similarity and the presence of factors that reduce inflammation, vascu-larization, and scarring. However, considerations like donor-derived infectious risk and the requirement of an invasive surgery limit the clinical application of such treatments. Moreover, the quick depletion of bioactive factors after grafting reduces the efficacy of treatments. Therefore, in the current study, the possibility of nano delivery of the bioactive factors extracted from the human amniotic membrane to the ocular surface was investigated. Materials and Methods: Nanoparticles were prepared...

Preparation and evaluation of various banana-based biochars together with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry for determination of diverse pesticides in fruiting vegetables

    , Article Food Chemistry ; Volume 360 , 2021 ; 03088146 (ISSN) Keikavousi Behbahan, A ; Mahdavi, V ; Roustaei, Z ; Bagheri, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Biomass, originates from plant- or animal-based materials with a huge potential to be reused. Here we report a simple, rapid and inexpensive method for preparation of modified biochars derived from the banana peel followed by their applications in pipette-tip micro solid-phase extraction (PT-µSPE). Due to the contribution of various effective parameters on modification of banana peel biochars (BPBs), Taguchi design was used to optimize activation temperature, activation repetition, treatment material and impregnation ratio. Efficiency of the prepared BPBs were studied by extraction of twelve various pesticides, as model analytes with an extended range of log P values (1.4–5.7), followed by...

Laboratory detection methods for the human coronaviruses

    , Article European Journal of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases ; Volume 40, Issue 2 , 2021 , Pages 225-246 ; 09349723 (ISSN) Shabani, E ; Dowlatshahi, S ; Abdekhodaie, M. J ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Coronaviruses are a group of envelop viruses which lead to diseases in birds and mammals as well as human. Seven coronaviruses have been discovered in humans that can cause mild to lethal respiratory tract infections. HCoV-229E, HCoV-OC43, HCoV-NL63, and HCoV-HKU1 are the low-risk members of this family and the reason for some common colds. Besides, SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV, and newly identified SARS-CoV-2, which is also known as 2019-nCoV, are the more dangerous viruses. Due to the rapid spread of this novel coronavirus and its related disease, COVID-19, a reliable, simple, fast, and low-cost detection method is necessary for patient diagnosis and tracking worldwide. Human coronaviruses detection...

Ethylenediamine-functionalized Zr-based MOF for efficient removal of heavy metal ions from water

    , Article Chemosphere ; Volume 264 , 2021 ; 00456535 (ISSN) Ahmadijokani, F ; Tajahmadi, S ; Bahi, A ; Molavi, H ; Rezakazemi, M ; Ko, F ; Aminabhavi, T. M ; Arjmand, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2021
    Abstract
Ethylenediamine-functionalized Zr-based metal-organic framework (MOF, UiO-66-EDA) was prepared via Michael addition reaction to investigate its potential for adsorption of heavy metal ions from water. Specifically, the influence of agitation time, solution pH, the dosage of the adsorbent, initial metal ion concentration, temperature, and coexistence of other metal ions was investigated on the removal efficiency of UiO-66-EDA towards Pb(II), Cd(II), and Cu(II) metal ions. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model governed the adsorption of these ions onto the UiO-66-EDA. Langmuir isotherm model matched the experimental isotherm of adsorption with a maximum adsorption capacity of 243.90, 217.39,...

Green products from herbal medicine wastes by subcritical water treatment

    , Article Journal of Hazardous Materials ; Volume 424 , 2022 ; 03043894 (ISSN) Jouyandeh, M ; Tavakoli, O ; Sarkhanpour, R ; Sajadi, S. M ; Zarrintaj, P ; Rabiee, N ; Akhavan, O ; Lima, E. C ; Saeb, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Herbal medicine wastes (HMWs) are byproducts of medicine factories, which are mainly landfilled for their environmental problems. Only bearing in mind the contamination and concerns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and environmental emissions, the worth of herbal medicine wastes management and conversion to green products can be understood. In this work, subcritical water treatment was carried out batch-wise in a stainless tube reactor in the pressure range of 0.792–30.0 MPa, varying the temperature (127–327 °C) and time (1–60 min) of extraction. This resulted in new and green material sources, including organic acids, amino acids, and sugars. Amazingly, at very low extraction times (below 5...

Design and fabrication of an electrochemical aptasensor using Au nanoparticles/carbon nanoparticles/cellulose nanofibers nanocomposite for rapid and sensitive detection of Staphylococcus aureus

    , Article Bioelectrochemistry ; Volume 123 , 2018 , Pages 70-76 ; 15675394 (ISSN) Ranjbar, S ; Shahrokhian, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2018
    Abstract
Since that pathogenic bacteria are major threats to human health, this paper describes the fabrication of an effective and durable sensing platform based on gold nanoparticles/carbon nanoparticles/cellulose nanofibers nanocomposite (AuNPs/CNPs/CNFs) at the surface of glassy carbon electrode for sensitive and selective detection of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The AuNPs/CNPs/CNFs nanocomposite with the high surface area, excellent conductivity, and good biocompatibility was used for self-assembled of the thiolated specific S. aureus aptamer as a sensing element. The surface morphology of AuNPs/CNPs/CNFs nanocomposite was characterized with field emission scanning electron microscopy...
