After specifying the appropriate locations for the reference Electrodes (Ag/AgCl) in order for cathodic protection monitoring these three electrodes are installed in three protection zones. After design and supply of all the materials, the installation was started. The protection criterion of steel in concrete was studied and all the measured...

Design and Comparison of Reinforced and Pre-Stressed Interior Span Slabs for Concrete Parking Structures

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Jabari, Farzad (Author) ; Khaloo, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Due to the growth of population and the increasing number of auto-manufacturing plants in the world, governments have to find ways to decrease traffic, environmental pollution, etc. Providing parking lots is another problem with which we have to deal. It seems that designing and building multi-storey reinforced concrete parking structures is one of the ways to resolve this problem. According to complex behavior of concrete in compression and tension, it was so important to use an appropriate behavior model. In this research damage concept is used instead of crack concept which could models concrete behavior appropriately which causes acceptable results. According to uni-axial, bi-axial and...

Behavior of Concrete Slabs Reinforced with FRP Bars, Design and Analysis

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Adimi, Alireza (Author) ; Khaloo, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Despite extensive studies on the behavior of reinforced concrete slabs, especially those reinforced with steel rebars, no comprehensive studies have been conducted on the behavior of concrete slabs reinforced with FRP rebars. Therefore, there are some ambiguities regarding the tensile and compressive behavior of these rebars in the load-bearing capacity of reinforced concrete slabs (depending on their amount in the slab and their combination with steel rebars). Hence, in this study, in order to ensure the accuracy of numerical simulations, the numerical 3D simulation of a one-way concrete slab reinforced with tensile FRP rebars was performed using the finite element Abaqus software....

Experimental Investigation on the Behavior of RC Arches Strengthened by GFRP and CFRP Composites

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Moradi, Hossein (Author) ; Khaloo, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The rehabilitation of old structures holds a lot of importance, as many structures with a life span of over 30 years are prone to severe damage and even collapse. To overcome this problem, the use of FRP sheets to strengthen structures is suggested. RC-arches have been used in many structures such as bridges and require specific consideration in terms of strengthening. So far, the influence of the number of FRP layers and location, the height of arch and percentage of reinforcement on strengthened arch behavior have not been investigated. In this research, reinforced concrete arch members strengthened with GFRP and CFRP were investigated. A total of 28 Specimens, including four...

Strength and Stiffness Estimation of Damaged Reinforced Concrete Shear Walls Using Crack Patterns

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Moafi Madani, hamid (Author) ; Mohtasham Dolatshahi, Kiarash (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to estimate the stiffness and strength of damaged rectangular reinforced concrete shear walls after an earthquake using surface crack patterns. Assessing the damage severity of buildings after an earthquake is an important part of the emergency inspection operation of buildings. Expert inspectors tag buildings into two categories of safe or unsafe that are usually affected by subjective decisions, which may result in catastrophic events reported in previous earthquakes. In this research, an extensive database on the images of damaged rectangular reinforced concrete shear walls (RCSWs) is collected and used to develop predictive equations for updated stiffness and...

Fabrication of a Polymer Compound to Increase the Earthquake Resistance of the Building

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Jalali Khales, Ali (Author) ; Mousavi, Abbas (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Every year hundreds of thousands of lives are taken away worldwide by natural disasters such as earthquakes. Walls made of concrete blocks or bricks, are amongst the most vulnerable type of walls, which tend to collapse during an earthquake. Due to their good sound and thermal insulation properties, unreinforced masonry (URM) walls are widely used in partitioning many of the commercial and residential buildings worldwide. URM is considered one of the most common types of partition wall systems in many of the school and hospital buildings and commercial buildings.URM partition walls are known to have very low drift capacity in seismic events and the failure mechanisms are known to be mostly...

On the Seismic Behavior of RC Frames with Brick Infilled Walls with Opening, Retrofitted by FRP

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Paeini Vayghan, Mostafa (Author) ; Rahimzadeh Rofooei, Fayaz (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Wall systems are an essential part of the buildings and their capacity should be properly considered in their design. However, the seismic behavior of building systems with in-filled walls and their interaction is a very complex issue, yet to be understood. Using the in-filled walls in the buildings without including them in the design process changes the whole behavior of the structural system as well as their failure mechanism under earthquake excitations. On the other hand, there have been extensive researches on rehabilitation of the structures with in-filled walls or designing them as the main or one of the lateral load carrying systems against seismic input. In this research, first the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Cheraghali, Behrouz (Author) ; Dolati, Abolghasem (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Many of the major structure over coastal waters in the Kish Island due to the aggressive condition are showing signs of reinforcement corrosion. Recent advances in the development of anodes make it practical to use zinc galvanic cathodic protection to protect this structure in this area. Five anode systems were tested on several samples as, (1) zinc metal spray applied by arc-spraying on the concrete, (2) a zinc foil with conductive adhesive backing, (3) a system of zinc mesh and grout jacket, (4) a system of zinc mesh and compression panels, and (5) a bulk zinc. These anodes are set up to comparison the effects of potential and current over the zinc galvanic cathodic protection during 4...

Online Safety Analysis Algorithm for Post-Disaster Inspections Using Image Processing

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zakertabrizi, Mohammad (Author) ; Bakhshi, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Structural safety evaluation is an indispensable part of every post-disaster investigation, which should be conducted by inspection teams consisting of experienced structural engineers and trained inspectors. A complete evaluation takes up to three stages of assessment, to quantify and measure the magnitude of damage before proposing an overhaul resolution. According to the current codes of conduct, much of this complex and time-consuming process, especially in the first two stages, is left to the human judgment. To achieve a more uniform and in depth inspection, a new algorithm is presented to limit the arbitrary nature of the human opinion in damage evaluation, using properties of the...

Finite Element Analysis of Reinforced Concrete Waffle Slabs in Steel Structures Service Conditions

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Keihanian, Pedram (Author) ; Eskandari, Morteza (Supervisor) ; Kazemi, Mohammad Taghi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Since the main weight of structures comes from the weight of floor systems, it is desirable to use tin and light floor system in order to reduce gravity and seismic force induced in the structure. However architectural aspects limit the application of short spans in the structural system. The objective of this work was to analyze the adequacy of a design method widely used in the modeling of waffle slabs interaction with steel columns as its supports in steel frames, and to verify if it represents the slab behavior satisfactorily. A real scale waffle slab was laid on a steel column and submitted to service loads. Subsequently it was analyzed with FE method for measuring specific stress,...

The Influence of Shear-walls Location on Asymmetrical Buildings

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mohammadzadeh, Mohammad Mahdi (Author) ; Khaloo, Ali Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In building construction, a rigid vertical diaphragm is capable of transferring lateral forces from exterior walls, roofs and floors to the ground foundation in a direction parallel to its planes.[1] Refractory elements against lateral forces contain moment frames, shear walls or a combination of them. In this research, shear walls are discussed. Nowadays, in cities having old contexture, some of the buildings should be destructed. Thus, modern buildings should be built. Due to the limitation of adequate space and lack of symmetrical plan, buildings must be built in asymmetrical form. To design the structures with asymmetrical plan, it is necessary to study buildings with presence of...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Panahi, Mohsen (Author) ; Kazemi, Mohammad Taghi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The use of concrete and steel composite structural systems has been extensively studied both numerically and experimentally. Composite concrete and steel beams consist of a steel beam on which the concrete slab is constructed using shear connections. The performance of concrete slabs and steel beams in steel composite concrete structures is generally provided by welded shear connectors on the upper flange of the steel beam. In this study, a more accurate model in numerical form will be conducted to investigate the effect of shear connectors installed in the composite beam in the critical area of beam to column connection, which is considered as a protected zone. The main objective of this...
