    Abstract
Reliability assessment of phonemes, syllabi, words, concepts or utterances has become the key feature of Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) engines in order to make a decision to accept or reject a hypothesis. In this paper, we propose utterance-level confidence annotation based on combination of features extracted from multiple knowledge sources in Persian language. The experiment was conducted first to examine the performance of individual features, then to combine them using statistical data analysis and density estimation methods to assign a confidence score to utterances. Using the data collected from a Persian spoken dialogue system, we show that combining features from independent...

    Abstract
To cope with the unprecedented growth of mobile data traffic, we investigate the performance gains obtained from unifying coverage-centric 4G mobile networks and capacity-centric fiber-wireless (FiWi) broadband access networks based on data-centric Ethernet technologies with resulting fiber backhaul sharing and WiFi offloading capabilities. Despite recent progress on backhaul-aware 4G studies with capacity-limited backhaul links, the performance-limiting impact of backhaul latency and reliability has not been examined in sufficient detail previously. In this paper, we evaluate the maximum aggregate throughput, offloading efficiency, and in particular the delay performance of FiWi enhanced...

Investigating the effects of process variations and system workloads on reliability of STT-RAM caches

    , Article Proceedings - 2016 12th European Dependable Computing Conference, EDCC 2016, 5 September 2016 through 9 September 2016 ; 2016 , Pages 120-129 ; 9781509015825 (ISBN) Cheshmikhani, E ; Hosseini Monazzah, A. M ; Farbeh, H ; Miremadi, S. G ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2016
    Abstract
In recent years, STT-RAMs have been proposed as a promising replacement for SRAMs in on-chip caches. Although STT-RAMs benefit from high-density, non-volatility, and low-power characteristics, high rates of read disturbances and write failures are the major reliability problems in STTRAM caches. These disturbance/failure rates are directly affected not only by workload behaviors, but also by process variations. Several studies characterized the reliability of STTRAM caches just for one cell, but vulnerability of STT-RAM caches cannot be directly derived from these models. This paper extrapolates the reliability characteristics of one STTRAM cell presented in previous studies to the...

Fault-tolerant DC power distribution unit based on nonexclusive redundant modules

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics ; Volume 63, Issue 11 , 2016 , Pages 6801-6811 ; 02780046 (ISSN) Zarghany, M ; Parvari, R ; Kaboli, S ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc
    Abstract
Reliability of the power distribution unit (PDU) is very important in electrical systems. Since any failure in this unit leads to system failure. A commonly used method for increasing the reliability of a dc PDU is using the redundant modules. If a fault occurs in a voltage regulator of PDU, it is replaced by its redundant module. In conventional redundancy, each dc voltage regulator has its exclusive redundant modules. Therefore, if both a regulator and its redundant modules fail, the system is stopped. It is an important drawback since the exclusive redundant modules of other voltage regulators may not be used, but, the PDU cannot use them instead of faulty regulators. In this paper, the...

Resilience of civil infrastructure by optimal risk mitigation

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 23, Issue 5 , 2016 , Pages 1961-1974 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Mahsuli, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper puts forward a framework for optimal mitigation of regional risk to enhance the resilience of civil infrastructure. To meet this objective, probabilistic models, methods, and software are developed and applied. The work is conducted within a new reliability-based approach, in which reliability methods compute risk. This contrasts several contemporary approaches for risk analysis. Risk, in this context, denotes the probability of exceeding monetary loss. Evaluating such probabilities requires probabilistic models for hazards, response, damage, and loss. This motivates the following contributions in this paper. First, a new computer program is developed that is tailored to conduct...

    Abstract
Doubly fed induction generators (DFIGs) are widely used in wind power systems; hence their reliability model is an important consideration for production assessment and economic analysis of wind energy conversion systems. However, to date mutual influences of reliability analysis, production estimations and economic assessments of wind farms have not been fully investigated. This study proposes a reliability model for DFIG wind turbines considering their subcomponent failure rates and downtimes. The proposed production estimation algorithm leads to an economic assessment for wind farms. A comprehensive spare parts management procedure is then presented in the study. As a case study,...

    Abstract
In this paper, we experimentally investigate the statistical distribution of intensity fluctuations for underwater wireless optical channels under different channel conditions, namely fresh and salty underwater channels with and without air bubbles. To do so, we first measure the received optical signal with a large number of samples. Based on the normalized acquired data the channel coherence time and the fluctuations probability density function (PDF) are obtained for different channel scenarios. Our experimental results show that salt attenuates the received signal while air bubbles mainly introduce severe intensity fluctuations. Moreover, we observe that log-normal distribution precisely...

    , Article Journal of Construction Engineering and Management ; Volume 143, Issue 8 , 2017 ; 07339364 (ISSN) Nasrazadani, H ; Mahsuli, M ; Talebiyan, H ; Kashani, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This study presents a framework that utilizes Bayesian regression to create probabilistic cost models for retrofit actions. Performance improvement is the key parameter introduced in the proposed framework. The incorporation of this novel feature facilitates the characterization of retrofit cost as a continuous function of the desired performance improvement. Accounting for the performance gained from retrofit enables the use of the models in determining the optimal level of retrofit. Furthermore, accounting for the model uncertainty facilitates the use of the models in risk and reliability analyses. The proposed framework is applied to create seismic retrofit cost models for masonry school...

Reliability analysis of rotating cracked blade using modal data

    , Article 2017 International Conference on Mechanical, System and Control Engineering, ICMSC 2017, 19 May 2017 through 21 May 2017 ; 2017 , Pages 78-84 ; 9781509065295 (ISBN) Heidari, S ; Zabihollah, A ; Behzad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2017
    Abstract
This paper deals with vibrational behaviors of blades with cracks which are key components in rotating machines. However, since modelling and analysis of real blade is a complex problem, a simplified cantilever beam with both chordwise (in X-Y plane) and flapwise (in X-Z plane) motion are modeled instead. Finite Element Method (FEM) is used to model beam and to investigate its natural frequencies with a crack. Finally a limit function using modal data is developed and reliability analysis of beam model is performed. © 2017 IEEE

Seismic reliability assessment of structures using artificial neural network

    , Article Journal of Building Engineering ; Volume 11 , 2017 , Pages 230-235 ; 23527102 (ISSN) Vazirizade, S. M ; Nozhati, S ; Allameh Zadeh, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2017
    Abstract
Localization and quantification of structural damage and estimating the failure probability are key outputs in the reliability assessment of structures. In this study, an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is used to reduce the computational effort required for reliability analysis and damage detection. Toward this end, one demonstrative structure is modeled and then several damage scenarios are defined. These scenarios are considered as training data sets for establishing an ANN model. In this regard, the relationship between structural response (input) and structural stiffness (output) is established using ANN models. The established ANN is more economical and achieves reasonable accuracy in...

Reliability assessment of protective relays in harmonic-polluted power systems

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery ; Volume 32, Issue 1 , 2017 , Pages 556-564 ; 08858977 (ISSN) Jedrzejczak, J ; Anders, G. J ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Farzin, H ; Aminifar, F ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2017
    Abstract
Proliferation of distributed generations (DGs) and power-electronics-based loads is bringing about more harmonic-polluted power signals. While some failures may occur as a consequence of nonsinusoidal current or voltage waveforms, existing reliability models of protection relays have not taken the harmonic-related failures into consideration. This paper develops a comprehensive Markov reliability model to categorize the possible functional states of a component, say a transmission line, protected by a relay, operating in a harmonic-polluted environment. In order to make the proposed model practically tractable, it is further simplified in two ways, through merging the states of the same...

    Abstract
A probabilistic approach to modeling the seismic damage incurred by structural and nonstructural components is developed in this study. The resulting models are intended for use in detailed risk analysis of structures through structural reliability methods. The proposed modeling approach employs Bayesian linear regression to characterize the epistemic uncertainty in the model. In this approach, regressors are selected and constructed based on the mechanics of damage. In turn, the probability distributions of the model parameters and the model error are quantified by Bayesian linear regression using real-life data from laboratory experiments and/or post-earthquake inspections of damaged...

    Abstract
This paper presents a new method to determine the optimal number and locations of autorecloser and sectionalizer switches (AR/S) in distribution networks. The costs of AR/S investment, switch maintenance, and undistributed energy as well as reliability coefficients are considered in the objective function. Reliability parameters such as SAIFI, SADI, MAIFI, and ENS are evaluated in the case study system. As a new method, the weights of the reliability parameters are obtained by decision-makers using the analytical hierarchy process (AHP). The optimal size, type, and location of automatic switches are determined by minimizing the objective function using the particle swarm optimization (PSO)...
