    Abstract
Progression in the renewable energy field is tied to the development of high-performance energy storage devices with superior power and energy densities. Herein, an innovative material design was employed to prepare binder-free nickel-cobalt sulfide (NCS) on niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5)-decorated carbon spheres (CSs). Initially, CSs were directly grown on nickel foam (NF) via a hydrothermal carbonization approach. Core/shell-like NCS@Nb2O5@CS-NF was then synthesized through a hydrothermal process, followed by an electrodeposition process. When employed as an electrode material, NCS@Nb2O5@CS-NF achieved an excellent volumetric capacity of 9300 C L−1 at a current density of 18 A L−1. Later, an...

    Abstract
This paper proposes a family of interleaved DC-DC converters for high step-up applications based on multi-winding coupled inductors, which utilize inductive and capacitive approaches to transfer the input energy to the output load. The wide output load voltage level of the proposed converter depends on the switches duty cycle and the coupled inductor (CI) turns ratio. As some features, interleaving and cascading help the converters achieve high output voltage gain, low input current ripple, low-volume input inductor, and high reliability. Moreover, employing multi-winding coupled inductors improves output voltage gain, recycles the magnetic components stored energy, cancels circulating...

    Abstract
Miscellaneous sorts of renewable energies, despite of their positive impacts on the power system operation cost and environmental concerns, could jeopardize the system reliability due to introducing significant degrees of intermittency and uncertainty. This challenge could be overcome by composing various sources of renewable energies with complimentary natures. This paper devises an explicit mathematical framework to compromise the contribution of wind and solar energies. The optimization problem is to maximize the system reliability subject to a fixed monetary investment associated with both wind and solar. The problem formulation is based on mixed-integer programming (MIP) format in which...

    , Article Applied Energy ; Volume 93 , 2012 , Pages 668-674 ; 03062619 (ISSN) Mirkhani, S ; Saboohi, Y ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
A deterministic energy supply model with bottom-up structure has limited capability in handling the uncertainties. To enhance the applicability of such a model in an uncertain environment two main issues have been investigated in the present paper. First, a binomial lattice is generated based on the stochastic nature of the source of uncertainty. Second, an energy system model (ESM) has been reformulated as a multistage stochastic problem. The result of the application of the modified energy model encompasses all uncertain outcomes together and enables optimal timing of capacity expansion. The performance of the model has been demonstrated with the help of a case study. The case study has...

A practical eco-environmental distribution network planning model including fuel cells and non-renewable distributed energy resources

    , Article Renewable Energy ; Volume 36, Issue 1 , 2011 , Pages 179-188 ; 09601481 (ISSN) Soroudi, A ; Ehsan, M ; Zareipour, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper presents a long-term dynamic multi-objective planning model for distribution network expansion along with distributed energy options. The proposed model optimizes two objectives, namely costs and emissions and determines the optimal schemes of sizing, placement and specially the dynamics (i.e., timing) of investments on distributed generation units and network reinforcements over the planning period. An efficient two-stage heuristic method is proposed to solve the formulated planning problem. The effectiveness of the proposed model is demonstrated by applying it to a distribution network and comparing the simulation results with other methods and models

    Abstract
In this paper we investigate the effects of superconducting shielded core reactor (SSCR) on the operation of induction generators. Large number of induction generators used in wind power plants generally increase the short circuit current level of the system. The reason is that they provide parallel reduced-impedance paths for the fault currents. Taking advantage of SSCR in wind power plants allows for using these generating units in large numbers with no concerns about the system fault current increments. The study is performed on a test system using the conventional model of an induction generator and a new effective model for SSCR based on its shielding behavior. Mathematical equations...

    Abstract
An energy management system (EMS) was proposed for a campus microgrid (μG) with the incorporation of renewable energy resources to reduce the operational expenses and costs. Many uncertainties have created problems for microgrids that limit the generation of photovoltaics, causing an upsurge in the energy market prices, where regulating the voltage or frequency is a challenging task among several microgrid systems, and in the present era, it is an extremely important research area. This type of difficulty may be mitigated in the distribution system by utilizing the optimal demand response (DR) planning strategy and a distributed generator (DG). The goal of this article was to present a...

    Abstract
As concerning with water insecurity driven by water scarcity threatens the lives and livelihoods of humanity worldwide, urban water demand management is focused on promoting residential water conservation behaviors (WCBs) as a critical policy response to water scarcity. However, urban water conservation initiatives cannot be successful unless households involve in residential WCBs voluntarily by adopting water curtailment and/or water-efficiency actions. Thus, understanding motivations and mechanisms underlying accepting these two types of WCBs and interpreting their distinctions are primary policy considerations to make sustainable water consumption behaviors. Hence, the purpose of this...
