Exploring the Efficiency of Machine Learning Algorithms in Estimating Time-Variant Travel Time Distributions in River Basins

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Alizadeh Attar, Mehdi (Author) ; Danesh Yazdi, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the efficiency of machine learning algorithms in capturing the dynamics of water particles' age distribution and in estimating the time series of median travel time (MTT) in river basins. The mechanism of solute transport in a catchment does not follow the hydrograph shape of the catchment and depends on the spatial and temporal distribution of solute resident time. The equations governing the age dynamics of water particles discharged from a catchment have been presented analytically in recent research. These equations showed that the transfer of solutes depends on various factors, including climatic conditions, basin topography, and basin vegetation. Also,...

Climate change impact assessment on hydrology of Karkheh Basin, Iran

    , Article Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers: Water Management ; Volume 166, Issue 2 , 2013 , Pages 93-104 ; 17417589 (ISSN) Jamali, S ; Abrishamchi, A ; Marino, M. A ; Abbasnia, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
This paper addresses the impacts of climate change on hydrology and water resources in the Karkheh River Basin (KRB), which is the third most productive basin in Iran and has great potential for hydropower generation. The total potential capacity of reservoirs in this basin is more than 15 ×109 Mm3, of which 40% has been built. The sensitivity of the KRB to potential climate change is investigated by simulating basin streamflow response under different climate change scenarios. A conceptual rainfall-runoff model (IHACRES) was first calibrated by using hydrological and streamflow observations. The model was then applied by downscaling two general circulation model outputs (CGCM3 and HadCM3)...

Influence of unsteady flow hydrograph shape on local scouring around bridge pier

    , Article Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers: Water Management ; Volume 165, Issue 9 , October , 2012 , Pages 473-480 ; 17417589 (ISSN) Borghei, S. M ; Kabiri-Samani, A ; Banihashem, S. A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Accurate estimation of scour depth is needed for economic and safe determination of bridge pier foundation depth. Most design criteria are based on maximum scour depth due to the steady design discharge without flow time limit. In this paper, the results are presented of an experimental investigation on local scouring around a single bridge pier under steady and unsteady flow regimes. For unsteady flow, triangular shape hydrographs with repeatable peaks have been chosen. Results show that both sharp and flat increases to the peak of hydrographs have a negligible effect on scour depth for the same base time. An equation is obtained to compute the scour depth due to a specific triangular...

    Abstract
The inherent complexities of multi-reservoir flood control systems and their operation conditions along with the improvements of optimization methods have led to a positive trend on better development of these models. This trend tends to provide the operators of these systems with more practical solutions. Although optimization models can provide appropriate solutions for operation of multi-reservoir systems, the exact implementation of these solutions in real world is not guaranteed. This arises mainly due to high level risk of flood situation, real time operation constraints, high level uncertainties of inflows that usually are overlooked in optimization models, and so on. These problems...

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 19, Issue 4 , August , 2012 , Pages 997-1004 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Sohrabi Gilani, M ; Ghaemian, M
    Elsevier  2012
    Abstract
In the present paper, the seismic response of an arch dam subjected to spatial variation of ground motions along the interface with its foundations is investigated. Recorded ground accelerations at the dam foundation interface of an arch dam were used for the purpose of this investigation. Topographic amplification between various points of the interface was studied by obtaining ratios of the response spectral displacement and spectral pseudo acceleration. Time shift and amplification between stations show the nonuniform nature of ground motions for large structures like dams. Recorded ground accelerations were interpolated for different nodes of the finite element model. The seismic...

    Abstract
Flood control as an important purpose of reservoir systems faces a wide range of natural, social and political challenges, mainly due to different uncertainties. Over the time, these uncertainties call for necessary changes in the original plan of the systems. Therefore, construction of new flood control systems as well as the storage reallocation and reservoir reoperation of existing ones are essential for adapting the systems to new information, conditions and policies. Furthermore, multipurpose nature of the multi-reservoir systems requires considering conflicts among various purposes. In this paper, a multiobjective optimization model is developed for analyzing such conflicts in a...

    Abstract
Dam construction in arid and semiarid regions is generally related to the risk of increased salinity, due to water passage in contact with salty formations. Hence, it is important to take reservoir thermal and salinity stratification into account in operational rules. In the present study, a simulation–optimization model was developed to determine the amount of water release from various outlets to discharge the brine from hypolimnion layer considering the downstream water quality limitations. The most appropriate time, rate, and concentration to release brine were determined based on water consumption conditions and downstream water demand and river ecology characteristics. The proposed...

    Abstract
The global demand for renewable energy sources has arisen significant research interests in marine hydrokinetic energy harvesting from flow induced vibrations. The current study deals with the hydrokinetic energy harvesting potentials of diamond and square oscillators at various inline configurations. Both the sharp edge sections and the wake induced vibrations in tandem arrangement can lead to galloping type of instability with high energy efficiency ratios. The present in-water towing tank experiments comprise 1DoF vibrating systems at Re ranging from 2 × 103 to 4.8 × 104. The results show that the upstream wake generally enhances the system efficiency and the mechanical work done by the...

    Abstract
The Shadegan Wetland is a Ramsar-listed wetland in the south-west of Iran at the head of the Persian Gulf. It is the largest wetland of Iran covering about 400,000 hectares. The wetland plays a significant hydrological and ecological role in the natural functioning of the northern Gulf. It also supports a very diverse flora and fauna and is the most important site in the world for Marbled Teal. The water regime is threatened by upstream abstraction of water for irrigation and the saline discharge from sugar cane industries and irrigation schemes. This will result in an overall reduction in wetland water quantity and quality, leading to a change in plant community composition. This paper...

    Abstract
The on-fiber standardization technique for solid-coated solid-phase microextraction (SPME) was studied, and a theoretical model is proposed for the isotropic behavior of adsorption and desorption, based on Fick's law of diffusion and the Langmuir model. The isotropy of the adsorption and desorption of analytes onto and from the surface of porous solid SPME fiber was validated with the use of a commercially available fiber, a 50-μm Carbowax/ templated resin for carbamate pesticide analysis in various sample matrixes, and a self-made polypyrrole fiber for diazepam analysis in blood samples. Time constants were comparable for the adsorption and desorption processes. Equilibrium constants and...

    Abstract
A three-dimensio111nal boundary element solution for the seepage analysis in multi-domain general anisotropic media has been developed based on the transformation approach. Using analytical eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the hydraulic conductivity tensor, a closed-form coordinate transformation matrix has been provided to transform the quadratic form of governing equation of seepage for the general anisotropic media to the Laplace equation. This transformation allows the analysis to be carried out using any standard BEM codes for the potential theory on the transformed space by adding small pre- and post-processing routines. With this transformation, any physical quantity like the total...
