Developing a Compact Finite Difference Method for Solving Fluid - Solid Interaction in Incompressible Flow

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Parseh, Kaveh (Author) ; Hejranfar, Kazem (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this study, fluid-solid interaction (FSI) is simulated computationally by using a high-order accurate numerical method. The two-dimensional incompressible viscous flows are considered in the fluid domain. The primary problem with solutions of the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations is the difficulty of coupling changes in the velocity field with changes in the pressure field while satisfying the continuity equation. Herein, the artificial compressibility method is used to overcome this difficulty. Preconditioning is implemented to reduce the stiffness of the system of equations to increase the convergence rate of the solution. Using preconditioning, physical solutions even at low...

Designing market-based control with a genetic algorithm

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Vol. 21, Issue. 6 , 2014 ; ISSN: 10263098 Khorsand, S ; Amini, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Semi-active devices are low-cost as well as small and by changing the properties of low-power intensive structures, the aims of control are accomplished. On the other hand, the limited control force which can be applied to the structure for each damper causes more dampers to be used in the structures compared to the larger and stronger control devices which are more costly. These dampers coupled with sensors and the structure themselves make a complex dynamic system which is best controlled by a decentralized method such as Market-Based Control (MBC). In MBC, the actuators and the supply energy are modeled as buyer and seller respectively in the market place. To define the demand function of...

Oscillatory behavior of the nonlinear clamped-free beam microgyroscopes under electrostatic actuation and detection

    Abstract
Vibratory micromachined gyroscopes use suspending mechanical parts to measure rotation. They have no gyratory component that require bearings, and for this reason they can be easily miniaturized and batch production using micromachining methods. They operate based on the energy interchange between two modes of structural vibration. The objective of this paper is to study the oscillatory behavior of an electrostatically actuated vibrating microcantilever gyroscope with proof mass at its end. In the modelling, the effects of different nonlinearities, fringing field and base rotation are considered. The microgyroscope is subjected to coupled bending oscillations around the static deflection...

Optimum design process of vibration absorber via imperialist competitive algorithm

    , Article International Journal of Structural Stability and Dynamics ; Volume 12, Issue 3 , 2012 ; 02194554 (ISSN) Hoseini, R ; Salehipoor, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper deals with the optimum design of vibration absorbers utilized to reduce undesirable random vibrational effects that are originated in linear structures. Analytical expressions, for the case of nonstationary white-noise accelerations, are derived. The criterion is different from most conventional optimum design criteria, since it is based on minimizing the displacement or the acceleration variance of the main structure responses, without considering performances required against failure. In this study, in order to control the structural vibrations induced on a mechanical structure excited by nonstationary based acceleration random process, the MOO (multi-objective optimum) design...

Matrix analysis of nonlinear trusses using Prandtl-2 neural networks

    , Article Journal of Sound and Vibration ; Volume 330, Issue 20 , 2011 , Pages 4813-4826 ; 0022460X (ISSN) Joghataie, A ; Farrokh, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
A new method, based on the concepts of matrix analysis as well as the learning capabilities of neural networks, for the analysis of nonlinear trusses under dynamic loading is presented. The method can be applied to static trusses too. While there have been attempts in the past to use neural networks to identify and model different structures based on data measured on structural response directly, the main feature and advantage of this new method is in its capability to model a nonlinear truss by assembling the data collected on the response of its members. The basics of the method are: (1) for each truss member, a neural network is trained to learn and simulate its loadresponse behavior, (2)...

    Abstract
In this study, cell-centered (CC) and cell-vertex (CV) finite volume (FV) approaches are applied and assessed for the simulation of two-dimensional structural dynamics on arbitrary quadrilateral grids. For the calculation of boundary nodes displacement in the CC FV approach, three methods are employed. The first method is a simple linear regression of displacement of boundary nodes from the displacement of interior cell centers. In the second method, an extrapolation technique is applied for this purpose and, in the third method; the line boundary cell technique is incorporated into the solution algorithm in an explicit manner. To study the effects of grid irregularity on the results of CC...

    Abstract
Seismic response of steel moment-resisting frames equipped with a novel passive damper called infilled-pipe damper (IPD) is investigated in this study. The IPD is a very economical and easily assembled structural control device with high energy absorption, invented recently by the authors. A simplified trilinear load-displacement model for IPD devices is suggested to be used in this study and further investigations. Next, criteria for IPD elements size selection are proposed for passive control of structures against earthquake loads. Steel frame structures of 5, 10, and 20 stories are designed without any IPD devices. Then, the frames are equipped with IPDs of different stiffness. The frames...

An investigation of the effects of structural nonlinearity on the seismic performance degradation of active and passive control systems used for supplemental energy dissipation

    Abstract
It is generally accepted that active control systems provide better structural performance when compared to their passive counterparts. On the other hand, the design of active control systems based on linear control theory is highly dependent on the structural properties. For this reason, their performance is expected to be affected more severely by variations in structural properties compared to those of passive systems. These variations can occur due to nonlinear structural behavior, or even before that due to uncertainties in the estimation of these properties and in numerical modeling. The present work is an investigation of the dependency of various control systems used for supplemental...

Design of passive viscous fluid control systems for nonlinear structures based on active control

    , Article Journal of Earthquake Engineering ; 2017 , Pages 1-22 ; 13632469 (ISSN) Zare, A. R ; Ahmadizadeh, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A practical procedure is developed for the design of passive control systems using viscous fluid dampers for nonlinear structures. The design methodology takes advantage of the modification of the damping, strength, and stiffness properties of the structure to achieve the desired relative displacement and absolute acceleration response. For this purpose, a study of poles in the complex plane is used to determine the required changes in the dynamic properties of nonlinear structures. Furthermore, a relatively simple relation between the ductility demands of highly damped single- and multiple-degree-of-freedom (SDF and MDF respectively) systems is established to reduce the computational burden...

A study of spacecraft reaction thruster configurations for attitude control system

    Abstract
Reaction thrusters (RTs) are used as an alternative to momentum exchange devices when disturbance torques exceed the control authority of momentum exchange devices. The reaction control system (RCS) can employ some rocket thrusters to provide attitude control during the thrusting or coast phase. Within the control loop, the RCS's target could be either achieving and keeping a certain attitude or controlling the rate of an attitude change. In the coast phase, some tasks such as preacceleration, settling of liquid propellant, damping of structural vibrations, providing a velocity increment to separate stages and payloads, and carrying out orbital and nonorbital maneuvers may be included in its...

Energy harvesting from structural vibrations of magnetic shape memory alloys

    , Article Applied Physics Letters ; Volume 110, Issue 10 , 2017 ; 00036951 (ISSN) Askari Farsangi, M. A ; Cottone, F ; Sayyaadi, H ; Zakerzadeh, M. R ; Orfei, F ; Gammaitoni, L ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This letter presents the idea of scavenging energy from vibrating structures through magnetic shape memory alloy (MSMA). To this end, a MSMA specimen made of Ni50Mn28Ga22 is coupled to a cantilever beam through a step. Two permanent magnets installed at the top and bottom of the beam create a bias field perpendicular to the magnetization axis of the specimen. When vibrating the device, a longitudinal axial load applies on the MSMA, which in turn changes the magnetization, due to the martensitic variant reorientation mechanism. A pick-up coil wounded around the MSMA converts this variation into voltage according to the Faraday's law. Experimental test confirms the possibility of generating...

Heterogeneities in polymer structural and dynamic properties in graphene and graphene oxide nanocomposites: molecular dynamics simulations

    , Article Macromolecular Theory and Simulations ; Volume 26, Issue 2 , 2017 ; 10221344 (ISSN) Azimi, M ; Mirjavadi, S. S ; Salem Hamouda, A. M ; Makki, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The effect of graphene (G) and graphene oxide (GO), used as the nanofiller in polymer nanocomposites (NC), on the structural and dynamic properties of polymer chains, has been studied by means of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Two polymers, i.e., poly(propylene) and poly(vinyl alcohol), are employed as matrices to cover a wider range of polymer–filler interactions. The local structural properties, e.g., density profile, average Rg, and end-to-end distance as well as dynamic properties, e.g., estimated translational and orientational relaxation times, of polymer chains are studied. In addition, the interaction energies are estimated between polymers and nanofillers for different hybrid...

    , Article Mechanical Systems and Signal Processing ; 2018 ; 08883270 (ISSN) Sedehi, O ; Papadimitriou, C ; Katafygiotis, L. S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A new time-domain hierarchical Bayesian framework is proposed to improve the performance of Bayesian methods in terms of reliability and robustness of estimates particularly for uncertainty quantification and propagation in structural dynamics. The proposed framework provides a reliable approach to account for the variability of the inference results observed when using different data sets. The proposed formulation is compared with a state-of-the-art Bayesian approach using numerical and experimental examples. The results indicate that the hierarchical Bayesian framework provides a more realistic account of the uncertainties, whereas the non-hierarchical Bayesian approach severely...

    Abstract
Fulfilment of the underlying structure within an indivisible system which leads to a specific pattern of behaviour was previously addressed by prominent approaches. However, there was a considerable lack for proposal of a proper idea that considers the susceptibility of structures to change with time through other adjacent structures. Considering such a point of view necessitates an alternative approach to functional perspective. Thus, a process-oriented architectural decomposition of a simplified organization structure embedded in a supply chain is applied to analyse the structure dynamics. This novel perspective to dynamic multi-structure systems is introduced in this research and the...

    Abstract
A unified model composed of the flow function model, dislocation model and Taylor theory is used to investigate the evolution of dislocation density, cell size, and strength of tantalum during ECAP process. From the flow function model, strain and strain rate distributions are achieved and then using a modified version of three-dimensional ETMB model, the dislocation density, cell size, and strength are predicted. The predicted dislocation density, cell size, and strength are compared with the experimental data and a remarkable agreement is obtained. In addition, the effect of dynamic recovery on the strength of the processed tantalum is modeled and compared with other materials. © 2008...

Data-driven uncertainty quantification and propagation in structural dynamics through a hierarchical Bayesian framework

    Abstract
In the presence of modeling errors, the mainstream Bayesian methods seldom give a realistic account of uncertainties as they commonly underestimate the inherent variability of parameters. This problem is not due to any misconceptions in the Bayesian framework since it is robust with respect to the modeling assumptions and the observed data. Rather, this issue has deep roots in users’ inability to develop an appropriate class of probabilistic models. This paper bridges this significant gap, introducing a novel Bayesian hierarchical setting, which breaks time-history vibration responses into several segments so as to capture and identify the variability of inferred parameters over the...

    Abstract
In this paper dynamic analysis of multi-span bridges subjected to a moving vehicle is investigated. Finite element method is used to model the problem, and the Newmark technique is used for direct integration of the governing equations. In this regard, the moving node technique is applied to represent the dynamic responses of the multi-span bridge, and the vehicle is idealized as a sprung-mass system. Results indicate that the maximum vertical deflection of the multi-span bridge occurs at the span under the vehicle. It was found that the mid-span vertical deflection of spans for dynamic and static loading are not the same, and the position of the vehicle for maximum deflection for dynamic...

    Abstract
In this paper using classical beam theory, the dynamical governing differential equations of a vibrating shaft are derived then by using lumped parameter technique and method of transfer matrix (TM) the induced eigen value problem is solved. In calculating natural frequencies of a vibrating shaft under different boundary conditions, primarily the shaft was divided into number of segments. In each segment different number of lumped properties like mass, damping and flexibility on overall massless elastic or rigid shaft were applied. One of the aims of this study was to find out the optimum value for number of segments under different aforementioned conditions. In order to estimate the natural...
