    Abstract
An aluminum-magnesium alloy was friction-stir processed in the presence of TiO2 nanoparticles which were pre-placed in a groove on the surface to produce a composite. Field emission-scanning and transmission electron microscopy studies show that solid state chemical reactions occur between the Al-Mg matrix and the ceramic particles upon the severe plastic deformation process. The microstructure of the aluminum alloy consists of a coarse grain structure, large complex (Fe,Mn,Cr)3SiAl12 particles, and small Mg2Si precipitates. After friction stir processing, a deformed grain structure containing rod-like Al-Fe-Mn-Si precipitates is attained, along...

    Abstract
Friction stir welding (FSW) parameters, such as tool material, tool geometry, tilt angle, tool rotational speed, welding speed, and axial force play a major role in the weld quality of titanium alloys. Because of excessive erosion, tool material and geometry play the main roles in FSW of titanium alloys. Therefore, in the present work for the first time, tool material and geometry, tool tilt angle, cooling system and shielding gas effects on macrostructure, microstructure, and mechanical properties of pure titanium weld joint were investigated. Result of this research shows that Ti can be joined by the FSW, using a tool with a shoulder made of tungsten (W) and simple pin made of tungsten...

Seismic displacement ratios for soil-pile-structure systems allowed to uplift

    , Article Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering ; Volume 155 , 2022 ; 02677261 (ISSN) Hamidia, M ; Vafaei, A ; Dolatshahi, K. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
In this paper, the soil-pile-structure interaction effects on seismic displacement demands are investigated using various dimensionless parameters. The code prescribed procedures for estimating seismic displacement demands are built upon fixed-base structure assumption and neglect the effect of foundation uplift. Tensile index, the ratio of the summation of the tensile strength of all piles to the weight of the structure, is introduced as a novel dimensionless ratio for the seismic assessments. The seismic behavior of the structures with a small tensile index is close to the structures with uplift-allowed shallow foundations. Structures with a large tensile index behave like tied foundation...

    , Article Materials and Design ; Volume 34 , February , 2012 , Pages 759-767 ; 02641275 (ISSN) Hamidinejad, S. M ; Kolahan, F ; Kokabi, A. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this study, the resistance spot welding (RSW) process of the galvanized interstitial free (IF) steel sheets and galvanized bake hardenable (BH) steel sheets, used in the manufacturing of car bodies, has been modeled and optimized. The quality measure of a resistance spot welding joint is estimated from the tensile-shear strength. Furthermore, four important process parameters, namely welding current (WC), welding time (WT), electrode force (EF), and holding time (HT) are considered as the factors influencing the quality of the joints. In order to develop an accurate relationship between the process inputs (4-component vectors) and the response output (tensile-shears strength) at first a...

    , Article International Journal of Biological Macromolecules ; Volume 80 , 2015 , Pages 170-176 ; 01418130 (ISSN) Eghbalifam, N ; Frounchi, M ; Dadbin, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Polyvinyl alcohol/sodium alginate/nano silver (PVA/SA/Ag) composite films were made by solution casting method. Gamma irradiation was used to synthesize silver nanoparticles in situ via reduction of silver nitrate without using harmful chemical agents for biomedical applications. UV-vis and XRD results demonstrated that spherical silver nanoparticles were produced even at low irradiation dose of 5. kGy. By increasing irradiation dose, more nanoparticles were synthesized while no PVA hydrogel was formed up to 15. kGy. Also the size of nanoparticles was reduced with increasing gamma dose evidenced by higher release rate of silver nanoparticles in lukewarm water and SEM images. Comparing SEM...
