, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Abedinnasab, Mohammad Hossein (Author) ; Zohoor, Hassan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, we have derived the exact equations of motion for flexible beams. The derived equations are compared with similar equations reported in the literature, and they demonstrate significant power in prediction of the numerical results. The model for planar beams is verified by the performed experiments on carbon fiber rods. A new highly convergent, efficient technique which is quite fast is also developed for both approximating and controlling a system, entitled as fuzzy-Pade method. We then have studied effects of the wing flexibility on enhancing the lift and trust coefficients in the flapping flight. Aerodynamic force generation due to flapping is simulated for both the...

Analysis of Coupled Thermo-Mechanical Behavior of Shape Memory Alloys using Nonlinear Finite Element Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tootian, Mohammad Hassan (Author) ; Naghdabadi, Reza (Supervisor) ; Arghavani Hadi, Jamal (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Unique characteristic behavior of shape memory alloys (SMAs), known as shape memory effect (SME) and superelasticity (SE), make them an appropriate choice for innovative engineering. Design of SMA applications calls for development of constitutive models. To accurately predict SMA behaviors, employing a suitable model with low computational costs is required. In some experimental data, SMAs have coupling in mechanical and thermal behavior. Therefore, mechanical loading changes temperature of the material and variation in temperature affects the mechanical behavior as well. This behavior is called coupled thermo-mechanical effect. In SMA applications, since coupled thermo-mechanical behavior...

FEM Analysis of the Effects of Geometric Parameters on the Superplastic Forming of Metal Matrix Composit

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tehrani, Mehdi (Author) ; Abedian, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In aerospace applications, the weight of structures is considered as a major performance parameter. One of the most effective ways for weight reduction is then attributed to the structurally continuous manufacturing of mechanical components. In this way, not only the weight, but also the stress concentration, the cost, joints and fasteners applications, and the time of manufacturing are noticeably reduced. With this method, components with complicated shapes could be formed in a single manufacturing step. Special specification of whisker reinforced Metal Matrix Composites (MMC’s) has made these materials very attractive for the aerospace applications. That is why the superplastic forming of...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Taheri, Mohammad Ali (Author) ; Saeedi, Mohammad Hassan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Pipe freezing has become well established in industry as a method of short-termisolation in order to carry out maintenance or repairs. It is often necessary to repair system components without plant shutdown or drainage of system having many piping structures which may have hazardous or expensive fluid. Therefore, a series of tests has been arranged to investigate the ice plug formation in two standard pipes with different diameter size. The freeze zone on the pipe has been created by means of an aluminum jacket which liquid nitrogen flows in it. In the tests the freezing time, amount of liquid nitrogen usage andthe pressure tolerance of ice plug have been determined. Moreover, the numerical...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Seiphoori, Ali (Author) ; Haeri, Mohsen (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this research, the effects of Rayleigh waves on the response of typical three-dimensional concrete faced rock-fill dams (CFRDs), considering dam-foundation interaction and spatial variability of earthquake ground motion are investigated. The time history of Loma Prieta earthquake (Gilroy 1 station) is used as input excitation. The dam is considered to be located in a prismatic canyon with trapezoidal cross-section. A substructuring method, in which the unbounded soil is modeled by the scaled boundary finite-element method (SBFEM), is used to obtain scattered motion and interaction forces along the canyon. Non-linear model is used for rock fill...

Simulation of Urine Concentrating Mechanism in Rat Kidney Inner Medulla

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sanatkhani, Soroush (Author) ; Saeedi, Mohammad Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Physicians use charts that are prepared by experiments on animals or humans to prescribe drug dosage for patients. This method requires much more time by the Ministry of Health to approve new drugs to be used in health-care centers. Furthermore،we have no sight on how a specific drug is going to be diffuse in our body. In order to predict the distribution of a drug or any minerals in the kidney we need to model it. The first step would be modeling the important species that influence the urine concentrating mechanism. Due to the complications in modeling that mechanism especially in the inner medulla zone، we hadn’t solid information regarding that area. It is about half a century that...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Safahieh, Amir Hossein (Author) ; Arjmand, Navid (Supervisor) ; Parnianpour, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Azimi, Parisa (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the most common spinal surgeries involves spinal fusion or vertebral fixation, which is used to treat various conditions such as intervertebral disc disease, scoliosis (lateral deviation of the spinal column), fractures, infections, or the presence of tumors in the spinal column. In this surgical procedure, the use of pedicle screws and titanium rods prevents motion and friction between two vertebrae. Screws may enter the vertebrae in the wrong position and angle, causing bone weakening, rupture of nerve roots or blood vessels, weakness or lack of sensation in some parts of the body, spinal cord injury, and in severe cases, paralysis of the patient. For this reason, fusion surgery is...

    Abstract
Image registration is the process of estimating and applying a spatial transformation to a moving image with the aim of spatially aligning it with a fixed image. This allows for the combination of images with complementary information, such as images with different modalities, acquisition times, and even coming from separate individuals, with the purpose of producing more information-rich results. Image registration is a crucial step in many medical applications, such as analyzing the growth and changes of tissue and tumors, preoperative planning, image-guided surgery, radiation therapy planning and various segmentation tasks. Reinforcement learning is a science and mathematical paradigm for...

Design, Analysis, and Prototyping of Axial Flux Variable Reluctance Resolver

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Saneie, Hamid (Author) ; Nasiri Gheidari, Zahra (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Position sensors are inseparable parts of motion control systems. The variable reluctance resolvers, as position sensors, are widely used in the drive of permanent magnet motors due to their simple and reliable strucutre. One of the most possible installation faults in these sensors is rotor and stator eccentricities that deteriorate the accuracy of the resolver. Therefore, axial flux variable reluctance (AFVR) resolvers have been proposed to decrease the influence of eccentricities on the output accuracy. Hence, optimizing the AFVR resolver structure is necessary for improving its commercial usage. However, its accurate modelling needs three-dimensional (3-D) time stepping finite element...

Three Dimensional Dirac Materials in Weak Links

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Salehi, Morteza (Author) ; Jafari, Akbar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
We study the quantum transport properties of three dimensional Dirac materials within the framework of Landauer–Büttiker formalism. Charge carriers in normal metal satisfying the Schrödinger equation, can be split into four-component with appropriate matching conditions at the boundary with the three dimensional Dirac material (3DDM).We calculate the conductance and the Fano factor of an interface separating 3DDM from a normal metal, as well as the conductance through a slab of 3DDM. Under certain circumstances the 3DDM appears transparent to electrons hitting the 3DDM. We find that electrons hitting the metal-3DDM interface from metallic side can enter 3DDM in a reversed spin state as soon...

Investigation on Performance of Active Tuned Mass Dampers on Vibration Control of Three Dimentional Structures

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shahrokhi, Sasan (Author) ; Rahimzadeh Rofooei, Fayyaz (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Tuned Mass Dampers(TMD) are among the most studied passive or active control devices that have been used around the world to control the lateral vibration of different building structures. On the other hand, since 2-D structural models are not appropriate for estimating the true response of the eccentric structures, application of 3-D models have been considered for determining their seismic-induced coupled lateral-torsional behavior. In this research, the performance of the Active Tuned Mass Dampers (ATMD) in controlling the seismic response of 3-D structural models was investigated. Three structural models with 4, 8 and 15 number of stories and 3 different eccentricities (0, 10% and 15%)...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shadkhah, Mehdi (Author) ; Taeibi, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Kebriaee, Azadeh (Co-Supervisor) ; Salimi, Mohammad Reza (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Based on the history of computational fluid dynamics, choosing a proper method for three-dimensional investigation of two-phase flows is always challenging. In this research, the flow of atomization of a liquid jet was investigated. Also, Using GPU technique made our computations about 40 times faster. The numerical results are in good agreement with available numerical and experimental data. Based on our results, jet flow can achieve different regimes at different Weber and Reynold. Jet flow was found in dripping and Rayleigh instability regimes when Weber number was set to 1.79 and 3.10, respectively. Also, the transition between dripping and jetting was estimated at We between 2 to 3. In...

3D Reconstruction of Human Body from Single-View Videos

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Sepehri Nour, Maryam (Author) ; Kasaei, Shohreh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This thesis presented a state-of-the-art algorithm for perspective projection reconstruction of non-rigid surfaces from single-view and realistic videos. Which overcomes the limitations arising from the usage of orthographic camera model and the complexity and non-linearity issues of perspective projection equation. Unlike traditional non-rigid structure-from-motion (NRSfM) methods, which have been studied only on synthetic datasets and controlled lab environments that require some prior constraints (such as manually segmented objects, limited rotations and occlusions, and full-length trajectories); the proposed method can be used in realistic video sequences. In addition, contrary to...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sangi, Mehrdad (Author) ; Jahed, Mehran (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The mankind has always utilized vision as the most essential tool in evaluating his environment. Currently, one of the most important research areas in computer vision is to characterize a three dimensional object through its features in a natural scene. This task may be conducted through a stereo vision system. The objective of this study is to introduce a quantitative measure in order to evaluate the operation of an automatic recognition system for selected hand postures. A key application of our proposed system is to train a prosthetic hand through surface electromyogram (sEMG) signals. At the onset of this process, the patient conducts a certain posture through application of sEMG...

Exact Solution for Electrical Impedance Tomography using DSP

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Soltani, Farnoosh (Author) ; Vosoughi Vahdat, Bijan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
There are some problems in calculation of heavy and huge equations which are ill-posed and nonlinear. They need to be solved by the processors. The errors are important in our measurements because this precision is very important in calculation. The Block Method approach solving Forward Problem in Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) results produce an exact solution only if the measurements are done with enough accuracy. In this thesis, a 3D model of EIT with Block Method is implemented by means of Digital Signal Processor (DSP) to obtain exact results. In this work it has used a powerful processor called TMS320C6416DSK to reduce the measurement error in equations. It has used Code...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Savalanpour Ardebili, Hamid Reza (Author) ; Farhanieh, Bijan (Supervisor) ; Afshin, Hossein (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
With the process of achieving a higher state of social development and technological advances, the need for higher and more strict safety standards has been increased. In this regard, it is of great importance to have an accurate understanding of the fire phenomena and its consequences. Among the adverse effects of fire, a significant percentage of the fire fatalities is related to the fire-induced buoyant gases (smoke) flow which can lead to suffocation. Therefore, it is necessary to know the physics of the fire phenomena well. In fire investigation methods, the numerical study is an appropriate choice, because of the lower executive cost (relative to the experimental study) and the wider...
