    Abstract
An effective semi-classical method is introduced for controlling the high-order harmonic generation process and extending the cutoff frequency. This method is capable of defining the proper specification of the driving laser for maximizing the cutoff frequency. This method is evaluated by examining the high harmonic spectrum from the hydrogen atom and the fluorine (F2) molecule irradiated by single-, two-, and three-color laser fields. This study is done using the time-dependent density functional theory in a three-dimensional space. The results show that the single-, two-, and three-color laser pulses tuned by proper specifications could extend the cutoff frequency by up to 85%, 176%, and...

    Abstract
Due to the wide applications of three-dimensional graphene (3DG) foam in bio-sensors, stretchable electronics, and conductive polymer composites, predicting its mechanical behavior is of paramount importance. In this paper, a novel multiscale finite element model is proposed to predict the compressive modulus of 3DG foams with various densities. It considers the effects of pore size and structure and the thickness of graphene walls on 3DG foams' overall behavior. According to the scanning electron microscope images, a unit cell is selected in the microscale step to represent the incidental arrangement of graphene sheets in 3DG foams. After derivation of equivalent elastic constants of the...

Aerodynamic enhancement and improving the performance of a six-megawatt dowec wind turbine by micro-plasma actuator

    , Article International Journal of Mechanical Sciences ; Volume 195 , 2021 ; 00207403 (ISSN) Omidi, J ; Mazaheri, K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2021
    Abstract
We have investigated the usage of a Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) plasma actuator to improve the aerodynamic performance of an offshore 6 MW wind turbine. By controlling the aerodynamic load combined with pitch angles of 2, 5, and 10 degrees, we studied the plasma actuator effect on the overall harvested power. Actuators were installed in single and tandem configurations in different chord-wise locations to find the optimum design. The improved phenomenological model developed by authors was used in an analysis to simulate the interaction of the electrostatic field, the ionized particles and the fluid flow. A design software was used to estimate the harvested power of the real 3D blade....

    Abstract
Three-dimensional dipole arrays are normally used at the proximity of a reflective structure. Filamentary short-circuited dipoles are proposed to model the effect of the reflector structure. The computational burden is significantly reduced by using mutual impedance matrices. An analytical method of modelling the effect of the cylindrical reflector in a three-dimensional cylindrical geometry of dipole antenna arrays is introduced both for direction finding and beamforming applications in the presence of mutual coupling. The results of the implementation of the MUSIC (multiple signal classification) direction-finding algorithm show that the proposed model for accounting the cylindrical...

    Abstract
Atomic force microscope (AFM) is one of the most versatile and powerful devices capable of producing high-resolution images of nanomaterial. Many researchers are widely investigating to improve the scanning speed and image quality of AFM by proposing different techniques. Here, we aim to present a novel approach based on the smooth orthogonal decomposition for the estimation of the surface topography in AFM. The technique proposed in this research not only eliminates the need for a closed-loop controller but also acquires the surface three-dimensional shape (topography) very quickly and accurately. The proposed technique relies on the fact that in the tapping mode of atomic force microscopy,...

    , Article Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research ; Volume 60, Issue 2 , 2021 , Pages 824-841 ; 08885885 (ISSN) Rahimi, M ; Molaei Dehkordi, A ; Gharibi, H ; Roberts, E. P. L ; Sharif University of Technology
    American Chemical Society  2021
    Abstract
A novel approach named a magnetic flowable electrode (MFE) is proposed for the first time to enable enhancement of redox flow batteries (RFBs) performance. This approach enables the formation of a high active surface area electrode from magnetic nanomaterials, without the need to fabricate a self-supporting three-dimensional electrode structure. To form a simple MFE, magnetic modified carbon nanotubes are dispersed in the electrolyte, and permanent magnets are embedded behind the current feeder to apply a magnetic field across the flow cell channels. With circulating electrolyte, magnetic carbon nanotubes are aggregated on the graphite bipolar plate to form a well-structured nanoscale...

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 28, Issue 1 , 2021 , Pages 291-304 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Rajabpour, S ; Hajilouy Benisi, A ; Manzari, M. T ; Sharif University of Technology
    Sharif University of Technology  2021
    Abstract
Numerous studies have investigated driving equations used to predict the slip factor in centrifugal compressors so far. Inevitably, through these studies, the ow field characteristics have been simplified and the effects of the related parameters have been neglected. The present study, experimentally and numerically, investigates the slip phenomenon in a specific centrifugal compressor with complex blade curves and splitter blades, considering the main effective parameters such as the number of blades, exit angle, etc. To this end, a three-dimensional simulation of the viscous flow field of the compressor via an appropriate turbulence method was performed. In addition, an experimental study...

Numerical study to evaluate the important parameters affecting the hydrodynamic performance of manta ray's in flapping motion

    , Article Applied Ocean Research ; Volume 109 , 2021 ; 01411187 (ISSN) Safari, H ; Abbaspour, M ; Darbandi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2021
    Abstract
Manta ray swimming or bio-inspiration propulsion system, as a special type of marine propulsion system, is used for submersible vehicles that require high-speed maneuverability and stability, such as glider and AUV. In a manta ray swimming, the thrust force is generated by a couple of undulation and oscillation of wing, so that the direction of undulation wave and oscillation is upright and perpendicular to the direction of thrust force, respectively. It is possible to combine these two movement modes (flapping motion) on the three-dimensional model without considering the effects of wing twisting and flexibility to simplify and better understand the physical behaviors or special study of...

Proposing a general formula to calculate the critical velocities in tunnels with different cross-sectional shapes

    , Article Tunnelling and Underground Space Technology ; Volume 110 , 2021 ; 08867798 (ISSN) Savalanpour, H ; Farhanieh, B ; Afshin, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2021
    Abstract
Among the parameters affecting the critical velocity in tunnel fires, the tunnel cross-sectional shape could significantly affect the tunnel fire characteristics, mainly due to the wall-bounded physics of the tunnel fire. Previously, the effects of the cross-sectional geometry of the tunnel were calculated using the non-dimensional analysis and hydraulic height of the tunnel. The dimensionless analysis using hydraulic height calculates only the effects of the tunnel sizes and does not capture the effects of the shape of the tunnel cross-section. Developing a 3D computational fluid dynamics tool using the body-fitted grids, the critical velocities are calculated for the 7 different...

    , Article Powder Technology ; Volume 386 , 2021 , Pages 319-334 ; 00325910 (ISSN) Sayedain, S. S ; Ekrami, A ; Badrossamay, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2021
    Abstract
Ti64/CaP nanocomposite powder was fabricated and characterized for use in powder-bed 3D printing. The microstructure and phase composition, morphology, particle size distribution, sphericity, flow behavior and dispersion of the as-fabricated particles on the building plate of the 3D printer were investigated. The results confirmed a uniform distribution of nanostructured calcium phosphate particles on the surface of primary Ti64 ones. Calcium phosphate appears as an octa-calcium phosphate phase. The morphology of the particles was shown as spherical, and their sphericity was better than the as-received Ti64 particles. The particle size distribution of nanocomposite powder indicated a smaller...

    NRSfPP: non-rigid structure-from-perspective projection

    , Article Multimedia Tools and Applications ; Volume 80, Issue 6 , 2021 , Pages 9093-9108 ; 13807501 (ISSN) Sepehrinour, M ; Kasaei, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer  2021
    Abstract
A state-of-the-art algorithm for perspective projection reconstruction of non-rigid surfaces from single-view and realistic videos is proposed. It overcomes the limitations arising from the usage of orthographic camera model and also the complexity and non-linearity issues of perspective projection equation. Unlike traditional non-rigid structure-from-motion (NRSfM) methods, which have been studied only on synthetic datasets and controlled lab environments that require some prior constraints (such as manually segmented objects, limited rotations and occlusions, and full-length trajectories); the proposed method can be used in realistic video sequences. In addition, contrary to previous...

A hybrid of statistical and conditional generative adversarial neural network approaches for reconstruction of 3D porous media (ST-CGAN)

    , Article Advances in Water Resources ; Volume 158 , 2021 ; 03091708 (ISSN) Shams, R ; Masihi, M ; Bozorgmehry Boozarjomehry, R ; Blunt, M. J ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2021
    Abstract
A coupled statistical and conditional generative adversarial neural network is used for 3D reconstruction of both homogeneous and heterogeneous porous media from a single two-dimensional image. A statistical approach feeds the deep network with conditional data, and then the reconstruction is trained on a deep generative network. The conditional nature of the generative model helps in network stability and convergence which has been optimized through a gradient-descent-based optimization method. Moreover, this coupled approach allows the reconstruction of heterogeneous samples, a critical and serious challenge in conventional reconstruction methods. The main contribution of this work is to...

    Abstract
The biological identity of nanoparticles (NPs) is established by their interactions with a wide range of biomolecules around their surfaces after exposure to biological media. Understanding the true nature of the biomolecular corona (BC) in its native state is, therefore, essential for its safe and efficient application in clinical settings. The fundamental challenge is to visualize the biomolecules within the corona and their relationship/association to the surface of the NPs. Using a synergistic application of cryo-electron microscopy, cryo-electron tomography, and three-dimensional reconstruction, we revealed the unique morphological details of the biomolecules and their...

An exploratory study on application of various classification models to distinguish switchable-hydrophilicity solvents based on 3D-descriptors

    , Article Separation Science and Technology (Philadelphia) ; Volume 56, Issue 5 , 2021 , Pages 961-969 ; 01496395 (ISSN) Shiri, M ; Shiri, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Bellwether Publishing, Ltd  2021
    Abstract
A set of solvents were classified into the switchable-hydrophilicity solvents (SHSs) and non-switchable-hydrophilicity solvents based on forming or not forming a biphasic mixture with water. SHSs have been developed to make the reaction and product separation processes easier. Herein, three classifier algorithms and various feature selection techniques relay on 3D-molecular descriptors to characterize chemicals and forecast their classes were employed. Cfs-SVM method was employed to perform a classification study. The importance of this study helps to understand more about the presence of hydrophobic groups, their position, and their shape in the molecule. © 2020 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC

Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH  2021
    Abstract
In this paper, the control problem of a wind turbine in region 3 (where the wind velocity is between the rated wind velocity and cut out wind velocity) has been investigated by considering the aerodynamic nonlinear behavior of the wind-structure interaction. The model has been developed by using the blade element momentum (BEM) theory to obtain the aerodynamic torque and aerodynamic loads in edgewise and flapwise directions. For validation, the aerodynamic behavior of the onshore NREL 5 MW turbine has been compared with the Fatigue, Aerodynamics, Structures, and Turbulence (FAST) aeroelastic code in terms of the power coefficient. Wind speed is modelled as a three-dimensional profile with...

Coordination variability during walking and running in individuals with and without patellofemoral pain part 1: lower limb intersegmental coordination variability

    , Article Journal of Medical and Biological Engineering ; Volume 41, Issue 3 , 2021 , Pages 295-304 ; 16090985 (ISSN) Haghighat, F ; Rezaie, M ; Ebrahimi, S ; Shokouhyan, S. M ; Motealleh, A ; Parnianpour, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Purpose: Although it has been proposed that individuals with patellofemoral pain show less lower limb intersegmental coordination variability, the evidence to support this hypothesis is rare. The purpose of this study was, therefore, to evaluate whether individuals with patellofemoral pain exhibit less intersegmental coordination variability compared with healthy individuals during walking and running. Also, it was hypothesized that increasing task demand would exacerbate group differences regarding coordination variability measures. Methods: Three-dimensional kinematics were collected while 17 females with patellofemoral pain and 17 healthy females walked at preferred speed, and ran at...

    Abstract
Purpose: There is a scarcity of studies evaluating the variability of couplings between proximal segments (trunk, pelvis, and thigh) in individuals with patellofemoral pain (PFP) while emerging evidence has suggested that aberrant motions of trunk and pelvis can have a contributory role in the etiology of PFP. The purpose of this study was, therefore, to evaluate the trunk, pelvis, and thigh intersegmental coordination variability in PFP compared with healthy individuals. Methods: Thirty-four participants (17 with PFP and 17 healthy controls) walked (at preferred speed) and ran (at preferred and fixed speed) on a treadmill each trial for 30 seconds. Three-dimensional kinematics were recorded...

    Abstract
In this study, the fatigue behavior of composite reinforced cracked aluminum 1050 plates is investigated experimentally and numerically. The tests are conducted in four different stress ratios between 0 and 1. At first step, plates with similar cracks and geometries have been prepared. Then the glass/epoxy patches have been attached to the cracked plates using Araldite 2015 adhesive. Fatigue load has been applied to three cases of samples including non-patch, one-side patch and two-side patch, where in all stress ratios the maximum force is considered constant. A three-dimensional finite element analysis is developed in ABAQUS. A good correlation between finite element results and the...
