    , Article Journal of the Electrochemical Society ; Volume 167, Issue 8 , 2020 Mohammadzadeh, A ; Mazaheri, M ; Sedighian, A ; Ghanbari, H ; Simchi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Institute of Physics Publishing  2020
    Abstract
For the rapid detection of hyperglycemia in human blood, we adopted a facile and two-step electrochemical procedure to prepare nickel/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) hybrid electrodes in the framework of a three-dimensional (3D) nanostructure. High-density and vertically-aligned nickel submicrorods with an average diameter of 155 ± 15 nm and a length of 7 ± 1 μm (an aspect ratio of about 40-50) were prepared by template-mediated electrochemical deposition techniques. Networks of rGO nanosheets between the rod-shaped arrays were formed by the cathodic electrophoretic deposition method. The synergistic effect of nickel morphology (planar and high-density rod-shaped arrays) and graphene oxide...

    Abstract
Biocompatible and biodegradable three-dimensional scaffolds are commonly porous which serve to provide suitable microenvironments for mechanical supporting and optimal cell growth. Silk fibroin (SF) is a natural and biomedical polymer with appropriate and improvable mechanical properties. Making a composite with a bioceramicas reinforcement is a general strategy to prepare a scaffold for hard tissue engineering applications. In the present study, SF was separately combined with titanium dioxide (TiO2) and fluoridated titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2-F) as bioceramic reinforcements for bone tissue engineering purposes. At the first step, SF was extracted from Bombyx mori cocoons. Then,...

    ICE Publishing  2020
    Abstract
This paper describes a three-dimensional (3D) finite-element (FE) model developed to assess the seismic behaviour of a novel prefabricated beam-to-beam connection termed a double-bolted flush end-plate beam (DBFEB) splice connection under cyclic loading. The seismic response was analysed and evaluated in terms of the hysteretic behaviour, rigidity, resistance degradation, ductility, energy dissipation capacity and equivalent damping coefficient. It is shown that the required performance can be achieved by controlling the end-plate thickness as well as the bolt grade and diameter; these parameters were therefore chosen as the key geometric variables investigated here for parametric study....

    , Article Materials Today Communications ; Volume 24 , September , 2020 kordi, A ; Adibnazari, S ; Imam, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
Epoxy resins and their derivatives, such as composites and epoxy adhesives, are widely used in various industries. However, epoxy resins have low performance against dynamic loading and crack propagation. Graphene-based nanomaterials can improve the mechanical performance of polymeric composites because of their appropriate mechanical properties and high surface area. This study aimed to investigate the effect of Two-Dimensional Graphene Oxide (2DGO) and Three-Dimensional Nitrogen-Doped Graphene (3D(N)G) nanomaterials on the fatigue behavior of epoxy resin. 2DGO was produced by the modified Hummer's method and 3D(N)G was synthesised by hydrothermal process, followed by freeze-drying....

Nonlinear displacement-based and hybrid-mixed quadrilaterals for three-dimensional stress analysis through sampling surfaces formulation

    , Article Thin-Walled Structures ; Volume 155 , October , 2020 Kulikov, G. M ; Bohlooly, M ; Plotnikova, S. V ; Kouchakzadeh, M. A ; Glebov, A. O
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
The finite deformation displacement-based and hybrid-mixed four-node quadrilateral elements using the sampling surfaces (SaS) technique are developed. The SaS formulation is based on choosing inside the plate N not equally spaced SaS parallel to the middle surface to introduce the displacements of these surfaces as basic plate unknowns. Such choice of unknowns with the consequent use of Lagrange polynomials of degree N–1 in the thickness direction permits the presentation of the plate formulation in a very compact form. The SaS are located at only Chebyshev polynomial nodes that allows one to minimize uniformly the error due to the Lagrange interpolation. To circumvent shear locking and have...

    , Article Annals of Biomedical Engineering ; Volume 48, Issue 7 , June , 2020 , Pages 1955-1970 Mahdavi, S. S ; Abdekhodaie, M. J ; Kumar, H ; Mashayekhan, S ; Baradaran Rafii, A ; Kim, K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer  2020
    Abstract
Abstract: 3D bioprinting technology is a promising approach for corneal stromal tissue regeneration. In this study, gelatin methacrylate (GelMA) mixed with corneal stromal cells was used as a bioink. The visible light-based stereolithography (SLA) 3D bioprinting method was utilized to print the anatomically similar dome-shaped structure of the human corneal stroma. Two different concentrations of GelMA macromer (7.5 and 12.5%) were tested for corneal stroma bioprinting. Due to high macromer concentrations, 12.5% GelMA was stiffer than 7.5% GelMA, which made it easier to handle. In terms of water content and optical transmittance of the bioprinted scaffolds, we observed that scaffold with...

    , Article Applied Surface Science ; Volume 520 , August , 2020 Mirmotallebi, M ; Iraji zad, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B. V  2020
    Abstract
A novel AC impedance study on three-dimensional hybrid structures of graphene sheets/MoS2 nanorose (GMS) toward ethanol vapor detection is presented in this work. These defective 3D hybrid porous structures are sensitive to the presence of different gases as a result of charge transfer with gas species, as well as a change in the effective capacitance of the system. The sensing behavior of the samples is investigated throughout time-dependent impedance measurement and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The sensor response is estimated at about 20% to 10 ppm ethanol vapor, with the response and recovery times about 3.2 s and 0.8 s, respectively. Sensing mechanism proposed to...

    Abstract
Compact heat exchangers are among the vital components used in various industries. In this study, a general framework has been developed with a multi-scale point of view for three-dimensional simulation of multi-stream plate-fin heat exchangers. The most important features in the MSPFHEs simulation, such as phase change phenomena, multi-component mixtures, multiple streams, transversal, lateral and longitudinal conduction, non-uniformity of inlet flow, variable fluid properties, and heat leakage are simultaneously considered in this model. The modular form of the model structure has facilitated layer-by-layer simulation of cross flow heat exchangers as well as parallel flow ones. Our model...

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology ; Volume 69, Issue 5 , 2020 , Pages 4992-4999 Saneie, H ; Nasiri Gheidari, Z ; Tootoonchian, F ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2020
    Abstract
Cost, durability and reliability are three critical issues in electrical/hybrid electrical vehicles (EV/HEV). In this regard, resolvers are often used as position and speed sensors in such applications. In this paper design and analysis of a novel multi-turn resolver is discussed to address all the mentioned issues. The proposed resolver has got one stator core and one rotor core. Double sets of signal windings on the stator and a special excitation winding on the rotor are designed to achieve both absolute and multi-speed operations. Mathematical model of the proposed resolver is verified using time stepping finite element analysis and experimental measurements. © 1967-2012 IEEE

    NRSfPP: non-rigid structure-from-perspective projection

, Article Multimedia Tools and Applications ; 2020 Sepehrinour, M ; Kasaei, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer  2020
    Abstract
A state-of-the-art algorithm for perspective projection reconstruction of non-rigid surfaces from single-view and realistic videos is proposed. It overcomes the limitations arising from the usage of orthographic camera model and also the complexity and non-linearity issues of perspective projection equation. Unlike traditional non-rigid structure-from-motion (NRSfM) methods, which have been studied only on synthetic datasets and controlled lab environments that require some prior constraints (such as manually segmented objects, limited rotations and occlusions, and full-length trajectories); the proposed method can be used in realistic video sequences. In addition, contrary to previous...

    Abstract
In this study, coupled Generative Adversarial and Auto-Encoder neural networks have been used to reconstruct realizations of three-dimensional porous media. The gradient-descent-based optimization method is used for training and stabilizing the neural networks. The multi-scale reconstruction has been conducted for both sandstone and carbonate samples from an Iranian oilfield. The sandstone contains inter and intra-grain porosity. The generative adversarial network predicts the inter-grain pores and the auto-encoder provides the generative adversarial network result with intra-grain pores (micro-porosity). Different matching criteria, including porosity, permeability, auto-correlation...

Improved depth resolution and depth-of-field in temporal integral imaging systems through non-uniform and curved time-lens array

    , Article Optics Express ; Volume 28, Issue 5 , 2020 , Pages 6261-6276 Shateri, F ; Behzadfar, S ; Kavehvash, Z ; Sharif University of Technology
OSA - The Optical Society  2020
    Abstract
Observing and studying the evolution of rare non-repetitive natural phenomena such as optical rogue waves or dynamic chemical processes in living cells is a crucial necessity for developing science and technologies relating to them. One indispensable technique for investigating these fast evolutions is temporal imaging systems. However, just as conventional spatial imaging systems are incapable of capturing depth information of a three-dimensional scene, typical temporal imaging systems also lack this ability to retrieve depth information—different dispersions in a complex pulse. Therefore, enabling temporal imaging systems to provide these information with great detail would add a new facet...

Particle filtering-based low-elevation target tracking with multipath interference over the ocean surface

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems ; Volume 56, Issue 4 , 2020 , Pages 3044-3054 Shi, X ; Taheri, A ; Cecen, T ; Celik, N ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2020
    Abstract
As radar signals propagate above the ocean surface to determine the trajectory of a target, the signals that are reflected directly from the target arrive at the receiver along with indirect signals reflected from the ocean surface. These unwanted signals must be properly filtered; otherwise, their interference may mislead the signal receiver and significantly degrade the tracking performance of the radar. To this end, we propose a low-elevation target tracking mechanism considering the specular and diffuse reflection effects of multipath propagation over the ocean surface simultaneously. The proposed mechanism consists of a state-space model and a particle filtering algorithm and promises...

    Abstract
A set of solvents were classified into the switchable-hydrophilicity solvents (SHSs) and non-switchable-hydrophilicity solvents based on forming or not forming a biphasic mixture with water. SHSs have been developed to make the reaction and product separation processes easier. Herein, three classifier algorithms and various feature selection techniques relay on 3D-molecular descriptors to characterize chemicals and forecast their classes were employed. Cfs-SVM method was employed to perform a classification study. The importance of this study helps to understand more about the presence of hydrophobic groups, their position, and their shape in the molecule. © 2020, © 2020 Taylor & Francis...

Varying the permeability of the grout layer within the specified range, the base numerical model is then calibrated by the field data of...

Casing failure in salt rock: numerical investigation of its causes

    , Article Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering ; Volume 53, Issue 9 , 2020 , Pages 3903-3918 Taheri, S. R ; Pak, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer  2020
    Abstract
Numerous cases of casing failure have been reported worldwide. Depletion-induced compaction is one of the main factors that may cause casing failure. Stress perturbation in salt layers may accommodate rock flow which endangers the stability of cased wells. Besides, poor cementing jobs are recognized as one of the wellbore instability causes. These factors need to be considered to determine the mechanism behind the casing failure. In this study, the creep behavior of the caprock salt layer in the southwest Iranian oil fields is experimentally studied through a number of creep tests under conditions of elevated temperature and pressure. Then, a three-dimensional finite element analysis is...
