, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Asadollahi, Mahdieh (Author) ; Bastani, Dariush (Supervisor) ; Mousavi, Abbas (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Today reverse osmosis (RO) is the dominant technology for desalination. Most of commercially available RO membranes are polyamide thin film composite (TFC) types which exhibit good performance. However, the major obstacle for application of polyamide TFC RO membranes is fouling which can be mitigate by surface modification. In this research, surface modification of fabricated aromatic polyamide TFC RO membranes was carried out using UV-initiated graft polymerization at different irradiation times (15, 30, 60, and 90 s) and various acrylamide concentrations (10, 20, and 30 g/L). Also, coating of membranes surface with various concentrations of TiO2 nanoparticles (10, 20, 30, and 50 ppm)...

Synthesis and Properties of Functional Super Hydrophobic TiO2

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Razavi, Atieh (Author) ; Dolati, Abolghasem (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Titanium nano-oxide (TiO2) coatings have been used for self-cleaning, antimicrobial, and dust-proof designs. The degree of wetting of a solid surface with water in humid air depends on how the surface tension of the existing phases relates. The ratio between these tensions estimates the contact angle between a drop of water and the surface on which it is placed. A contact angle above 150 º is essential for surface overflow. In this study, 18 different combinations of titanium oxide and FAS, PDMS and PMS nanoparticles were obtained with a static contact angle of 165 to 150 º and a dynamic contact angle of 7 º.1 to 4.5 º. Following the measurement of water droplet slip speed on a sloping...

TiO2 and ZIF-8 were selected for their excellent stability in aqueous media, high photoactivity, non-toxicity, and high surface area. The structure of the as-synthesized materials was characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron...

Synthesis and Characterization of TiO2-SnO2 Core-shell Nanoparticles

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Farhadi, Amin (Author) ; Ghorbani, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Mohammadi, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nowadays, heterogeneous photocatalytic processes have attained a particular importance among the other advanced oxidation processes in purification of organic polluted wastewaters. Titanium oxide is the most popular photocatalyst because of its strong oxidizing abilities for decomposition of organic pollutants, superhydrophilicity, chemical stability, long durability, non-toxic nature, and low cost. Same as other semiconductors, high recombination rate of charge carriers is the main weakness that cause decreases in photocatalytic efficiency. One of the solutions is coupling this material with other semiconductors. Core-shell nanoparticles are the type of these composites that show high...

    Abstract
The morphology of symmetric and asymmetric membranes obtained by precipitation can be rationalized by thermodynamic and kinetic parameters. Such parameters which the former relates to thermodynamic effect and the latter controls the time of separation of the cast solution film immersing in the non-solvent bath from the glass plate were calculated as dimensionless parameters for further analysis. Phase diagram was used to consider the role of thermodynamic. The kinetic properties of the membranes could be investigated by the rate of mass transfer between solvent and non-solvent. By adding additives to the polymer solution the desire for becoming two phase and also viscosity of the solution...

Effect of brookite presence on nanocrystalline anatase - Rutile phase transformation

    , Article International Journal of Nanotechnology ; Volume 6, Issue 10-11 , 2009 , Pages 961-972 ; 14757435 (ISSN) Mahshid, S ; Askari, M ; Sasani Ghamsari, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
TiO2nanocrystals were prepared by hydrolysis and peptisation of titanium isopropoxide under different pH values. The as-prepared powder of very fine anatase crystallites ranges from 8 nm in acidic solution of pH 3 to 10 nm in basic solution of pH 8. Heat treatment of the powders leads to grain growth and anatase - rutile transformation. Experimental results have shown that the anatase to rutile phase transformation in the heat-treated powders depend not only on primary crystallite size but also the presence of brookite phase. It is observed that in the powders with the same size the presence brookite phase would accelerate the anatase to rutile transformation. Furthermore it has been found...

Oxygen deficient titania phases (TiO2-x), such as Ti7O13 and Ti 2O3, were observed for TiO2:Er 2O3=25:75 (molar ratio) system annealed at 800°C. It was observed that Er2O3 retarded anatase to rutile transformation. Furthermore, TEM analysis also showed that Er2O 3 hindered the crystallisation and...

    Abstract
Reactive friction stir processing (RFSP) has been employed to modify the surface properties of AA5052 Al-Mg alloy through grain refinement and the distribution of ultrafine hard nanoparticles (2 to 6% volume fractions of 50 nm titanium dioxide). The heat generated induced solid state reactions between the metal matrix and the reinforcement to form Al3Ti/MgO inclusions. The role of grain refinement and distributed hard nanoparticles on the tribological behavior of the alloy under dry sliding wear condition was evaluated. The wear rates and friction coefficient as well as macro- and micro-features of the worn surfaces indicate that the wear mechanism (at 3–7 kgf and 0.5 m/s) is abrasive. The...
