    Abstract
In this paper, we have studied the effect of annealing under slightly oxidizing ambient (N2 + O2) on the structural and electrical characteristics of a limited number of silicon nanoparticles embedded in an ultra-thin SiO2 layer. These nanoparticles were synthesized by ultra-low energy (1 keV) ion implantation and annealing. Material characterization techniques including transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fresnel imaging and spatially resolved electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) have been used to evaluate the effects of oxidation on structural characteristics of nanocrystal layer. Electrical transport characteristics have been measured on less than one hundred nanoparticles by...

    Abstract
In this paper, we present a study on the contribution of silicon nanocrystals to the electrical transport characteristics of large (100 μm × 100 μm) and small (100 nm × 100 nm) metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) capacitors at room temperature. A layer of silicon nanocrystals is synthesized within the oxide of these capacitors by ultra-low energy ion implantation and annealing. Several features including negative differential resistance (NDR), sharp current peaks and random telegraph signal (RTS) are demonstrated in the current-voltage and current-time characteristics of these capacitors. These features have been associated to charge storage in silicon nanocrystals and to the resulting Coulomb...

Room-temperature quantum effect in silicon nanoparticles obtained by low-energy ion implantation and embedded in a nanometer scale capacitor

    , Article Applied Physics Letters ; Volume 86, Issue 16 , 2005 , Pages 1-3 ; 00036951 (ISSN) Shalchian, M ; Grisolia, J ; Assayag, G. B ; Coffin, H ; Atarodi, S. M ; Claverie, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this article, we present the room-temperature current-voltage characteristics of a nanometer scale (100×100 nm2) metal-oxide-semiconductor capacitor containing few (less than 100) silicon nanoparticles. The layer of silicon nanoparticles is synthesized within the oxide of this capacitor by ultra low-energy ion implantation and annealing. Current fluctuations in the form of discrete current steps and sharp peaks appeared in the static and dynamic I (V) characteristics of the capacitor. These features have been associated to quantized charging and discharging of the nanoparticles and the resulting Coulomb interaction to the tunneling current. © 2005 American Institute of Physics

    , Article Nanotechnology ; Volume 16, Issue 2 , 2005 , Pages 334-338 ; 09574484 (ISSN) Marandi, M ; Taghavinia, N ; Iraji Zad, A ; Mahdavi, S. M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The optical and electrical properties of semiconductor nanoparticles are strongly dependent on their size. A flexible control of the size of the nanoparticles is of interest for tuning their properties for different applications. Here we use a coupled method to control the size of CdS nanoparticles. The method involves the photochemical growth of CdS nanoparticles together with the use of a capping agent as an inhibiting factor. CdS nanoparticles were formed through a photoinduced reaction of CdSO4 and Na2S2O3 in an aqueous solution. Mercaptoethanol (C2H6OS) was used as the capping agent, and we investigated the effect of illumination time, illumination intensity and the concentration of...

    Abstract
In the current research, a cost-effective and modified method with a high degree of reproducibility was proposed for the preparation of fine nanoscale and high-purity BaTiO3. In contrast to the other established methods, in this research, carbonate-free BaTiO3 nanopowders were prepared at a lower temperature and in a shorter time span. To reach an in-depth understanding of the scientific basis of the proposed process, an in-detail analysis was carried out for characterization of nanoscale BaTiO3 particles via differential thermal analysis (DTA)/thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and...

    Abstract
Accumulative roll bonding (ARB) was successfully used as a severe plastic deformation method to produce Al-SiC nanocomposite sheets. The effects of process pass and amount of SiC content on microstructure and mechanical properties of the composites are investigated. As expected, production of ultrafine grain structures by the ARB process as well as nanosize particulate reinforcements in the metal matrix composite (MMC) resulted in excellent mechanical properties. According to the results of the tensile tests, it is shown that the yield and tensile strengths of the composite sheet increased with the number of ARB cycles without saturation at the last cycles. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM)...

    Abstract
Uniaxial compression test at different temperatures [573 K to 723 K (300 °C to 450 °C)] and strain rates (0.01 to 1 s−1) was employed to study the hot deformation behavior of an ultrafine-grained (UFG) Al6063 alloy prepared by the powder metallurgy route. The UFG alloy with an average grain size of ~0.3 µm was prepared by mechanical milling of a gas-atomized aluminum alloy powder for 20 hours followed by hot powder extrusion at 723 K (450 °C). To elaborate the effect of grain size, the aluminum alloy powder was extruded without mechanical milling to attain a coarse-grained (CG) structure with an average grain size of about 2.2 µm. By employing the dynamic materials model, processing maps for...

    , Article Thin Solid Films ; Volume 518, Issue 15 , 2010 , Pages 4281-4289 ; 00406090 (ISSN) Mahmoudi, M ; Simchi, A ; Imani, M ; Stroeve, P ; Sohrabi, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Magnetite (Fe3O4) nanostructures with different morphologies including uniform nanoparticles, magnetic beads and nanorods were synthesized via a co-precipitation method. The synthesis process was performed at various temperatures in the presence of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) at different concentrations. It is shown that small amounts of PVA act as a template in hot water (70 °C), leading to the oriented growth of Fe3O4 nanorods, which was confirmed by selected area electron diffraction. Individually coated magnetite nanoparticles and magnetic beads were formed at a relatively lower temperature of 30 °C in the folded polymer molecules due to the thermo-physical properties of PVA. When a moderate...

In this research, we report different methods to intercalate the layers of MoS2 successfully using acid-treatment, ultrasonication, oxidation and thermal shocking. The other goal of this study is to form S[dbnd]O bonds mainly because of expected enhanced...
