    , Article 7th International Conference on Photonics, Optics and Laser Technology, PHOTOPTICS 2019, 25 February 2019 through 27 February 2019 ; 2019 , Pages 201-208 ; 9789897583643 (ISBN) Zarif, A ; Memarian, M ; Mehrany, K ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Temporal coupled mode theory (CMT) has so far been applied phenomenologically in the analysis of optical cavity-waveguide structures, and relies on a priori knowledge of the to-be-excited resonator mode. Thus a rigorous derivation from Maxwell's equations, and without any prior knowledge of the resonator type is needed. In this paper we derive temporal CMT of optical cavities coupled to waveguides. Starting from Maxwell's equations and considering a proper expansion of the modes of the waveguide and resonator, and using mode orthogonality, the temporal CMT for this structure is obtained. We show that this formulation is general and can be applied to both traveling wave and standing wave type...

Analysis of in-plane vibration and critical speeds of the functionally graded rotating disks

    , Article International Journal of Applied Mechanics ; Volume 11, Issue 2 , 2019 ; 17588251 (ISSN) Bagheri, E ; Jahangiri, M ; Sharif University of Technology
World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte Ltd  2019
    Abstract
In this paper, the in-plane free vibration analysis of the functionally graded rotating disks with variable thickness is presented utilizing DQM. It is assumed that the rotational velocity of the disk is constant and the thickness and material properties including modulus of elasticity and density vary along the radial coordinate. The distribution of the forward and backward traveling waves versus the angular velocity is demonstrated for several modal circles and nodal diameters with respect to the fixed and rotating coordinate systems. After presenting the accuracy and convergence of the numerical method, the derived formulation and the solution method are validated by comparing the results...

Using the hybrid DAS-SR method for damage localization in composite plates

    , Article Composite Structures ; Volume 247 , 2020 Nokhbatolfoghahai, A ; Navazi, H. M ; Groves, R. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
In this paper, the hybrid Delay-And-Sum (DAS) with Sparse Reconstruction (SR) method was further developed for damage location in composite plates. In composite materials, anisotropy leads to some challenges in using conventional damage location methods, which are developed for isotropic materials. In the hybrid DAS-SR method, the DAS and SR methods were combined as a complement of each other. To investigate the DAS-SR method for composite structures, the group velocity of the travelling wave for different directions was first measured experimentally via PZTs. The DAS and SR formulations were then modified to be compatible with the direction-dependent group velocities. The results show that...

    Abstract
Dirac dispersion cones enable remarkable wave phenomena in electronics as well as electromagnetic systems. In this work, the authors experimentally demonstrate for the first time the Dirac leaky wave antennas (DLWAs) at millimetre-wave (mm-wave) frequencies. The demonstrated DLWAs are implemented in the substrate integrated waveguide technology, delivering unprecedented features at high frequencies such as radiation at, and continuous beam scanning through broadside, with ease of fabrication, making these designs well suited for mm-wave applications such as emerging fifth generation and Internet of Things, radar and imaging. It is shown that a planar Dirac photonic crystal can be realised...

Analytical study of open-stopband suppression in leaky-wave antennas

    Abstract
In the majority of leaky-wave antennas (LWAs), the lack of broadside radiation is due to the existence of an open-stopband (OSB) at broadside. In this letter, we present a study on the OSB suppression in LWAs. In particular, we start from a simple unit cell comprising a planar waveguide having alternating open and short sidewalls. The analytical and simulated band structures testify consistently that OSB suppression can indeed be realized by proper design, analytically studied using mode-matching, and further supported by full-wave simulations. An LWA is then implemented using the substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) technology, which provides interesting features such as a high directive...

    Abstract
In this work, the authors experimentally show Dirac Leaky Wave Antennas (DLWAs) at upper microwave frequencies. For the first time, DLWAs are implemented using simple Parallel plate waveguide (PPW) technology, while yielding desirable radiation features and continuous beam scanning through broadside, as well as extremely low profile, with significant ease of fabrication, making them well suited for Ku band applications such as satellite communication, radar and emerging fifth-generation (5G). A planar Dirac photonic crystal in PPW is shown with a closed bandgap and linear dispersion around broadside. In this work, 1D and 2D PPDLWAs are designed that provide scannable fan and pencil beams,...

    Detonatlve travelling waves for combustions

    , Article Applicable Analysis ; Volume 77, Issue 3-4 , 2001 , Pages 405-418 ; 00036811 (ISSN) Hesaaraki, M ; Razani, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The existence of travelling wave solution to equations of a viscous heat conducting combustible fluid is proved. The reactions are assumed to be one step exothermic reactions with a natural discontinuous reaction rate function. The problem is studied for a general gas. Instead of assuming the ideal gas conditions we consider a general thermodynamics which is described by a fairly mild set of hypotheses. Travelling waves for detonations reduce to specific heteroclinic orbits of a discontinuous system of ODE's. The existence proof for heteroclinic orbits corresponding to weak and strong detonation waves is carried out by some general topological arguments in ODE. The uniqueness and...

Signal and noise improvement of travelling wave fet mixers

    , Article 2nd International Conference on Microwave and Millimeter Wave Technology, ICMMT 2000, 14 September 2000 through 16 September 2000 ; 2000 , Pages 76-79 ; 0780357434 (ISBN); 9780780357433 (ISBN) Moradi, G ; Abdipour, A ; Farzaneh, F ; Ghorbani, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The influence of the loading of the FET electrodes, on signal and noise performances of the device in mixer application is studied. It is shown that exciting the input signal from one end of the gate and extracting the output signal from the opposite ends of the gate can improve the device characteristics, provided that the two remaining ends of the gate and the drain are properly loaded. This structure makes the lines (i.e. the gate and the drain electrodes) to be matched with the loads. Therefore it leads to a travelling wave FET mixer, which is a good candidate for high power mm-wave application. © 2000 IEEE

Design of a Coupled Thermoacoustic Refrigerator System based on Heat Absorption of Piston Engines of Power Plants

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Dehghani, Ali (Author) ; Mazaheri, Karim (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Design and parametric study of a coupled thermoacoustic refrigerator system has been carried out based on thermoacoustic theories. The purpose of coupled thermoacoustic refrigerator design is to cool a container with small dimensions for use in cold storage above zero. The application of this refrigerator is where the waste heat of piston engines of distributed generation (DG) plants can be used as energy input. The design is based on the simplicity and low cost of the refrigerator. Therefore, the engine and refrigerator part of the coupled thermoacoustic refrigerator is enclosed in a resonator with a fixed diameter, which is closed on both sides of the resonator. Two standing-wave...

Analysis of a Mathematical Model Describing the Geographical Spread of Dengue Disease

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Gazori, Fereshteh (Author) ; Hesaaraki, Mahmoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Dengue is one of the most important infectious diseases in the world. This disease is a viral infection that is transmitted to humans through the bite of a mosquito called Aedes aegypti. For this reason, geographical regions infected with this type of mosquito are at risk of Dengue outbreak. In this thesis, we first present a mathematical model describing the geographical spread of Dengue disease, which includes the movement of both the human population and the winged mosquito population. This model is derived from a mixed system of partial and ordinary differential equations. Our proposed model has the ability to consider the possibility of asymptomatic infection, so that the presence of...

    , Article IEEE Access ; Volume 10 , 2022 , Pages 25707-25717 ; 21693536 (ISSN) Rezaee, S ; Memarian, M ; Eleftheriades, G. V ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this work, we present a study on the existence of Dirac type dispersion in the simplest of periodic metallic waveguide structures. It is shown that periodic repetitions of two dissimilar waveguides (WGs) can be properly designed to lead to a Dirac type dispersion. A simple theory using circuit modeling is presented to find the condition for Dirac point operation. In addition, mode-matching followed by full-wave simulations validate that the band structure matches that of the theory and shows that a Dirac dispersion can be realized. A Dirac Leaky-Wave Antenna (DLWA) is then implemented using this simple arrangement in substrate-integrated-waveguide (SIW) technology. This DLWA has the...

    Abstract
This study aims to investigate the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of annular cylinders coupled with a fluid medium to identify the effective parameters on stability margins at different rotation speeds. To achieve this, stability and nonlinear vibrations of rotating cylindrical shells containing incompressible annular fluid are considered. The fluid medium is bounded by a rigid external cylinder. Sanders–Koiter kinematic assumptions are utilized to determine the geometrically nonlinear structural equations of motion. These equations are then used to investigate finite amplitude vibrations of various fluid-loaded shells at different states. A penalty approach is introduced by using...
