    , Article BioImpacts ; Volume 3, Issue 4 , 2013 , Pages 185-194 ; 22285652 (ISSN) Ahmadpour Yazdi, H ; Hormozi Nezhad, M. R ; Abadi, A ; Sanati, M. H ; Kazemi, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
Introduction: Proximal spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is one of the most significant neurodegenerative diseases amongst the autosomal-recessive genetic disorders which is caused by the absence of protein survival of motor neuron (SMN). A critical nucleotide difference in SMN2 compared to SMN1 gene leads to an inefficient protein. Hence, homozygous lack of SMN1 provides a progressive disease. Due to the high prevalence, up to now, several molecular diagnostic methods have been used which most of them are lengthy, expensive, and laborious. Methods: In the present study, we exploited a gold nanoprobe-based method for semi-quantitative SMN1 gene dosage analysis compared to SMN2. The assay was...

    Abstract
Novel types of highly swelling hydrogels (superabsorbent) were prepared by grafting crosslinked poly acrylic acid-co-2-hydroxyethylmetacrylate (PAA-co-HEMA) chains onto starch through a free radical polymerization method. The effect of grafting variables (i.e., concentration of methylenebisacrylamide (MBA), acrylic acid/2-hydroxy methymetacrylate (AA/HEMA) weight ratio, ammonium persulfate (APS), starch, neutralization percent, were systematically optimized to achieve a hydrogel with a maximum swelling capacity. The superabsorbent (SAP) formation was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The controlled-release behavior of...

    , Article Molecular Informatics ; Volume 32, Issue 8 , 2013 , Pages 742-753 ; 18681743 (ISSN) Jalali Heravi, M ; Mani-Varnosfaderani, A ; Valadkhani, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
A total of 21 833 inhibitors of the central nervous system (CNS) were collected from Binding-database and analyzed using discriminant analysis (DA) techniques. A combination of genetic algorithm and quadratic discriminant analysis (GA-QDA) was proposed as a tool for the classification of molecules based on their therapeutic targets and activities. The results indicated that the one-against-one (OAO) QDA classifiers correctly separate the molecules based on their therapeutic targets and are comparable with support vector machines. These classifiers help in charting the chemical space of the CNS inhibitors and finding specific subspaces occupied by particular classes of molecules. As a next...

    Abstract
This paper presents a new method for spectrophotometirc detection of sulfide applying fungal peroxidase immobilized on sodium alginate. The sensing scheme was based on decrease of the absorbance of the orange compound, purpurogallin produced from pyrogallol and H2O2 as substrates, due to the inhibition of peroxidase by sulfide. Absorbance of purpurogallin was detected at 420nm by using a spectrophotometer. The proposed method could successfully detect the sulfide in the concentration range of 0.6-7.0μM with a detection limit of 0.4μM. The kinetic parameters of Michaelis-Menten with and without sulfide were also calculated. Possible inhibition mechanism of peroxidase by sulfide was deduced...

    Abstract
Conductive polymers (CPs) are classified as materials which exhibit highly reversible redox behavior and the unusual combined properties of metal and plastics. CPs, due to their multifunctionality, ease of synthesis and their stability, have attracted more attentions in different fields of research, including sample preparation. CPs along with several commercial hydrophilic sorbents, are alternative to the commercially available hydrophobic sorbents which despite their high specific surface areas, have poor interactions and retentions in the extraction of polar compounds. This review covers a general overview regarding the recent progress and new applications of CPs toward their synthesis...

    Abstract
Gold nanorods (GNRs) can be used in various biomedical applications; however, very little is known about their in vivo tissue distribution by radiolabeling. Here, we have developed a rapid and simple method with high yield and without disturbing their optical properties for radiolabeling of gold rods with iodine-131 in order to track in vivo tissue uptake of GNRs after systemic administration by biodistribution analysis and γ-imaging. Following intravenous injection into rat, PEGylated GNRs have much longer blood circulation times. We have developed a rapid and simple method for radiolabeling of gold rods with iodine-131 in order to track in vivo tissue uptake of gold nanorods after systemic...

    Abstract
SAPO-34 zeolite-like particles were successfully synthesized at high temperature environment. An L9 orthogonal array of the Taguchi method was implemented to investigate the effects of experimental conditions to prepare SAPO-34 with respect to crystallinity of the final product phase. The results showed that the favorable phase crystallinity was improved by increasing the hydrothermal synthesis temperature and organic template content, whereas increasing the water content in synthesis mixture decreased the crystallinity. No significant changes in crystallinity of the final products were observed by increasing the synthesis duration. In addition, zeolite SAPO-5, which was formed as the...

    Abstract
Blood vessels, especially large vessels have a greater thermal effect on freezing tissue during cryosurgery. Vascular networks act as heat sources in tissue, and cause failure in cryosurgery and reappearance of cancer. The aim of this study is to numerically simulate the effect of probe location and multiprobe on heat transfer distribution. Furthermore, the effect of nanoparticles injection is studied. It is shown that the small probes location near large blood vessels could help to reduce the necessary time for tissue freezing. Nanoparticles injection shows that the thermal effect of blood vessel in tissue is improved. Using Au, Ag and diamond nanoparticles have the most growth of ice ball...

    Abstract
Site reactivity of some enol-imines derived from N-aryl formamides with pentachloropyridine under basic conditions in dry CH3CN was investigated. The aromatic nucleophilic substitution of pentachloropyridine with enol-imines occurs at the 4-position of pyridine ring by both oxygen and nitrogen site of enol-imines. Nucleophilic attack by the oxygen of enol-imine gave corresponding oximino compounds as a mixture of E- and Z-isomers. In contrast, nucleophilic attack by the nitrogen of enol-imine gave the unexpected N,N-di-substituted aryl compounds. The structures of all the compounds were confirmed by IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and 19F NMR spectroscopy as well as elemental analysis and...

    Abstract
Porous shape memory alloys (SMAs) exhibit the interesting characteristics of porous metals together with shape memory effect and pseudo-elasticity of SMAs that make them appropriate for biomedical applications. In this paper, a 3-D phenomenological constitutive model for the pseudo-elastic behavior and shape memory effect of porous SMAs is developed within the framework of irreversible thermodynamics. Comparing to micromechanical and computational models, the proposed model is computationally cost effective and predicts the behavior of porous SMAs under proportional and non-proportional multiaxial loadings. Considering the pressure dependency of phase transformation in porous SMAs, proper...
