FFT-based fast Reed-Solomon codes with arbitrary block lengths and rates

    , Article IEE Proceedings: Communications ; Volume 152, Issue 2 , 2005 , Pages 151-156 ; 13502425 (ISSN) Dianat, R ; Marvasti, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
By puncturing the Reed-Solomon codes with the block lengths of 2 m, it is possible to design systematic and nonsystematic codes with arbitrary block lengths and rates that can be decoded using FFT. Because the Reed-Solomon (RS) codes are maximum distance separable (MDS), the resultant codes keep this property as well. The codes are constructed over prime fields as opposed to the conventional practice of extension fields, and hence additions and multiplications are simple mod operations and there is no need to use polynomials and look-up tables. © IEE, 2005

Simultaneous optimization and simulation of a-Si1-xC x layers on n-type silicon solar cells

    , Article Solar Energy Materials and Solar Cells ; Volume 85, Issue 4 , 2005 , Pages 467-476 ; 09270248 (ISSN) Vesaghi, M. A ; Asadi, K ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
We have applied Rosenbrock's optimization algorithm to obtain the optimized efficiency of a solar cell and its structural parameters. To obtain these parameters, we have developed a computer program for simultaneous optimization and simulation of the solar cell. We have used experimental data on the electrical and optical properties of a-Si1-xCx layers, put them into the written code and obtained the optimized parameters of this solar cell. The maximum efficiency is 6.32% which is close to one experimental result. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

Developing an efficient multigrid strategy for solving incompressible flow

    , Article 2004 ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition, IMECE 2004, Anaheim, CA, 13 November 2004 through 19 November 2004 ; Volume 260 , 2004 , Pages 625-634 ; 08888116 (ISSN) Darbandi, M ; Schneider, G. E ; Taheri, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2004
    Abstract
In this work, a multigrid acceleration technique is suitably developed for solving the two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations using an implicit finite element volume method. In this regard, the solution domain is broken into a huge number of quadrilateral finite elements. The accurate numerical solution of a flow field can be achieved if very fine grid resolutions are utilized. Unfortunately, the standard implicit solvers need more computational time to solve larger size of algebraic set of equations which normally arise if fine grid distributions are used. Past experience has shown that the convergence of classical relaxation schemes perform an initial rapid decrease of...

Design guidelines for leakage control transistor

    , Article Conference Proceedings - 2nd Annual IEEE Northeast Workshop on Circuits and Systems, NEWCAS 2004, Montreal, Que., 20 June 2004 through 23 June 2004 ; 2004 , Pages 209-211 ; 0780383222 (ISBN) Farbiz, F ; Emadi, M ; Foruzandeh, B ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper investigates the effects of transistor sizing of the sleep transistor on the power consumption and speed. A method is proposed to handle the power-delay trade off and a new transistor arrangement is proposed. Simulations show how much is the appropriate size of sleep transistor respect to the gate size

    Characterization of two-qubit perfect entanglers

    , Article Physical Review A - Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics ; Volume 70, Issue 5 A , 2004 , Pages 052313-1-052313-9 ; 10502947 (ISSN) Rezakhani, A. T ; Sharif University of Technology
    2004
    Abstract
The problem of the characterization of perfect entanglers was investigated. Perfect entanglers have been defined as unitary operators that can generate maximally entangled states from some suitably chosen separable states. Some well defined tools have also been used to measure the entangling properties of quantum operators and two-qubit states. It was found that such tools help to analyze perfect entanglers and also have the unique property of maximally entangling a complete set of orthonormal product vectors. The results show that the qubit gates provided minimum universal gate construction and two of them were necessary and sufficient in implementation of a generic two-qubit gate

A novel context modeling scheme for motion vectors context-based arithmetic coding

    , Article Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering; Technology Driving Innovation, 2004, Niagara Falls, 2 May 2004 through 5 May 2004 ; Volume 4 , 2004 , Pages 2021-2024 ; 08407789 (ISSN); 0780382536 (ISBN) Ghandi, M ; Ghandi, M. Abstract
In this paper a new context modelling scheme for arithmetic coding of Motion Vectors (MVs) is proposed. The model uses the correlation between the horizontal and vertical components of MVs to improve the probability estimation of symbols. The accurate probability estimation can therefore improve the efficiency of the context-based arithmetic coder. The proposed scheme has been adapted to the H.264 advanced video codec and the simulation results show that a considerable bit rate saving can be achieved in MV coding

A novel fingerprint image compression technique using wavelets packets and pyramid lattice vector quantization

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Image Processing ; Volume 11, Issue 12 , 2002 , Pages 1365-1378 ; 10577149 (ISSN) Kasaei, S ; Deriche, M ; Boashash, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    2002
    Abstract
A novel compression algorithm for fingerprint images is introduced. Using wavelet packets and lattice vector quantization, a new vector quantization scheme based on an accurate model for the distribution of the wavelet coefficients is presented. The model is based on the generalized Gaussian distribution. We also discuss a new method for determining the largest radius of the lattice used and its scaling factor, for both uniform and piecewise-uniform pyramidal lattices. The proposed algorithms aim at achieving the best rate-distortion function by adapting to the characteristics of the subimages. In the proposed optimization algorithm, no assumptions about the lattice parameters are made, and...
