    Abstract
In this research, the effects of preparation conditions, including the coagulation bath temperature, polymer solution composition, preliminary drying time, and thickness of cast polymeric films, on the morphology of ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer membranes were investigated with scanning electron microscopy and nitrogen gas permeability tests. Flat sheet membranes were prepared through a thermal-wet phase-inversion method. Scanning electron microscopy pictures showed asymmetric structures for some of the membranes. It was also observed that the porosity of the membranes decreased with an increase in the temperature of the coagulation bath and the solvent evaporation period. When the...

    Abstract
Design and operation of an optical fiber sensor based on the intensity modulation is reported in this article. Two distinct mechanisms are considered for the optical power loss and the sensor operation is explained in terms of these effects. The dominant loss mechanism is found to be the evanescent loss and based on this phenomenon the optical fiber sensor is designed. Performance of this sensor is tested as a liquid level sensor for water and the experimental results are reported. The dry and wet signals for this probe are measured for a series of measurements and important factors concerning the design and operation of sensor are described. The precision of measured values, reproducibility...

    Abstract
In reservoirs that have been water flooded or gas injected, it is still a significant amount of the remaining oil. Water alternative gas injection is a tertiary oil recovery method which was used for the first time in Canada for recovering remained oil in place of reservoir. The pore-scale mechanisms of this process are not fully understood yet. Such knowledge is essential for accurate modelling of reservoir. In this study various experiments on the WAG process is carried out by means of high pressure glass type micromodel instrument. The micromodel apparatus in this experiment was capable to operate at pressures up to 3500 Psi and temperatures up to 85°C which is similar to conventional...

    Abstract
The present study investigated a counter-flow cooling tower performance by integrating the Artificial Neural Networks and Intelligent Optimisation Algorithms (ANN-IOAs). For this purpose, two scenarios were evaluated. In the first scenario, inlet air wet-bulb temperature (T aw), inlet air dry bulb temperature (T ad), water to the air mass flow rate ratio (mw /ma), and rotor speed (υ) were the input parameters for the ANNs, while the output temperature (T wo) was the ANNs output. In the second scenario, the same input parameters applied for the first scenario were used as input variables and the tower efficiency (ε) was considered as an output parameter. The well-known IOAs methods, namely,...

    Abstract
The process of fluid flow displacement in porous media has recently gained great prominence owing to its widespread usage in a variety of industries, especially in the case of pore scale investigations. Although, many studies have been conducted to address pore-scale investigations in both modeling and experimental approaches, the role of interfacial tension and contact angle on pore-scale phenomena is less focused. In this work, direct pore-scale modeling was used to precisely examine the effect of interfacial tension and contact angle on the fluid flow at the microscale. Also, several pore-scale mechanisms, including Haines jump and dynamic breakup mechanisms, were observed. Therefore, the...

Extended gibbs free energy and laplace pressure of ordered hexagonal close-packed spherical particles: A wettability study

    , Article Langmuir ; Volume 37, Issue 28 , 2021 , Pages 8382-8392 ; 07437463 (ISSN) Bayat, A ; Ebrahimi, M ; Rahemi Ardekani, S ; Saievar Iranizad, E ; Zaker Moshfegh, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The wetting property of spherical particles in a hexagonal close-packed (HCP) ordering from extended Gibbs free energy (GFE) and Laplace pressure view points is studied. A formalism is proposed to predict the contact angle (θ) of a droplet on the HCP films and penetration angle (α) of the liquid on the spherical particles. Then, the extended Laplace pressure for the layered HCP ordering is calculated and a correlation between the wetting angle, sign of pressure, and pressure gradient is achieved. Our results show that the sign and the slope of pressure are important criteria for determining the wettability state and it is found that the contact angle is independent of the particle radius, as...

Determining water-oil relative permeability and capillary pressure from steady-state coreflood tests

    , Article Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering ; Volume 205 , 2021 ; 09204105 (ISSN) Borazjani, S ; Hemmati, N ; Behr, A ; Genolet, L ; Mahani, H ; Zeinijahromi, A ; Bedrikovetsky, P ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This study aims at the simultaneous determination of relative permeability and capillary pressure from steady-state corefloods. Besides using the measurements of pressure-drop across the core and average saturation under steady-state conditions, we use the transient data between the sequential steady states. The inverse algorithm is based on four type curves “stabilizsation period versus water-cut” revealed by asymptotic analysis of the transient solution near end-point saturations, and on the exponential shape of transition data histories observed by direct numerical runs. The transition measurements are approximated in the stabilisation periods by the type curves using non-linear...

    Abstract
Gravity drainage is known as the controlling mechanism of oil recovery in naturally fractured reservoirs. The efficiency of this mechanism is controlled by block-to-block interactions through capillary continuity and/or reinfiltration processes. In this study, at first, several free-fall gravity drainage experiments were conducted on a well-designed three-block apparatus and the role of tilt angle, spacers’ permeability, wettability and effective contact area (representing a different status of the block-to-block interactions between matrix blocks) on the recovery efficiency were investigated. Then, an experimental-based numerical model of free-fall gravity drainage process was developed,...

Experimental investigation on the dominating fluid-fluid and rock-fluid interactions during low salinity water flooding in water-wet and oil-wet calcites

    , Article Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering ; Volume 204 , 2021 ; 09204105 (ISSN) Farhadi, H ; Fatemi, M ; Ayatollahi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2021
    Abstract
Low salinity water flooding (LSWF) has the potential to enhance the oil recovery by affecting the fluid-fluid and rock-fluid interactions. Therefore, a systematic investigation on the effect of initial wetting state (water-wet or oil-wet) of pure calcite is conducted to study the importance of these interactions on the effectiveness of LSWF. In the case of initially water-wet cores, more oil recovery efficiency is observed for more saline water cases. To shed light on the possible involved mechanisms, dynamic IFT, dynamic contact angle (CA), oil/brine and rock/brine surfaces zeta potentials, and effluent pH are measured. It is shown that the short-term effect of IFT reduction and long-term...

Development of a saturation-based μ(I)-rheology for wet granular materials using discrete element method

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 28, Issue 5 B , 2021 , Pages 2719-2732 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Ghorbani, R ; Taghizadeh Manzari, M ; Hajilouy Benisi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Sharif University of Technology  2021
    Abstract
The present study employs Discrete Element Method (DEM) to establish a rheological model that relates the apparent viscosity of a granular material to shear rate, normal stress, and water saturation. In addition, a theoretical model was developed to determine water distribution and water-induced forces between particles for different saturations. The resulting forces were embedded in a 3D shear cell as a numerical rheometer, and a wet specimen was sheared between two walls. A power law rheological model was then obtained as a function of inertia number and saturation. It was found that up to a critical saturation, the apparent viscosity increased with saturation that was higher than that of...

    Abstract
CaO derived from calcined eggshell was doped with Na–K by wet impregnation method and the effect of different Na/K molar ratios was investigated on biodiesel production from canola oil. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), and Thermogravimetric (TGA) analyses. FAME yields were determined by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). The Na–K/CaO catalyst with Na/K molar ratio of 1 showed the highest FAME yield of 97.6% at optimum reaction conditions. Structural investigation of materials revealed that FAME yield was proportional to the number of basic sites on...

Experimental investigation on synergic effect of salinity and pH during low salinity water injection into carbonate oil reservoirs

    , Article Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering ; Volume 202 , 2021 ; 09204105 (ISSN) Mehraban, M. F ; Ayatollahi, S ; Sharifi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2021
    Abstract
Interaction between rock-fluid and fluid-fluid can have a significant effect on oil recovery. Changing the wettability of reservoir rock toward more water-wet or less oil-wet state is one of the expected mechanisms during low salinity water injection (LSWI). pH and salinity are of the most eminent factors of injection water controlling the wettability state of a crude oil/brine/rock system during any waterflooding operation. A small change in pH can affect the surface charges at the rock/water and oil/water interfaces leading to wettability alteration in a porous medium. In this study, the synergic effect of salinity and pH on the wettability state of carbonate rocks is evaluated through...

    Abstract
In this study, droplet generation in a T-junction fluidic channel device was studied by using electrowetting actuation with the consideration of different droplet forming regimes. For this purpose, the finite element method (FEM) was used to solve the unsteady Naiver-Stokes equation. In addition, the level set method was applied to capture the interface between two phases. It was shown that there was a good agreement between obtained data and other work during the process of droplet generation in the absence of electrowetting actuation which results in the decrease in the size of the droplet with increasing the velocity ratios. In the shearing regime, the effectiveness of electrowetting on...

Numerical simulation of cold and hot water injection into naturally fractured porous media using the extended–FEM and an equivalent continuum model

    , Article International Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics ; 2021 ; 03639061 (ISSN) Mortazavi, S. M. S ; Pirmoradi, P ; Khoei, A. R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, a computational technique is presented for the isothermal and non-isothermal water injection into naturally fractured oil reservoirs. A remarkable number of naturally fractured reservoirs contain relatively heavy oils that could not be extracted economically; hence, the thermal recovery methods are extensively used for such reservoirs. In this study, the effectiveness of hot water injection over cold (isothermal) water injection in oil production is quantified. The influence of long and short fractures and their alignments on oil recovery are discussed. To this end, a 2D model for two-phase fluid flow and heat transfer is presented. The medium is assumed to be partially...

Delafossite-alumina nanocomposite for enhanced catalytic wet peroxide oxidation of anionic pollutants

    , Article Journal of Hazardous Materials ; Volume 417 , 2021 ; 03043894 (ISSN) Nazari, P ; Nouri, O ; Xie, Z ; Setayesh, S. R ; Wei, Z ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2021
    Abstract
Mass transfer efficiency and catalytic reactivity are the two major hurdles for heterogeneous catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (CWPO) technologies. To address these issues, nanocomposite CuFeO2/Al2O3 was synthesized and assessed as a novel catalyst for enhanced adsorption and oxidation of anionic pollutants (catechol and reactive red 195 (RR195)) in waters. With a positive charge on the nanocomposite by introducing Al2O3, the adsorption of anionic pollutants was promoted. The surface complexation reaction on CuFeO2/Al2O3, which fits well to the Langmuir isotherm, has engined the mass transfer of pollutants to the nanocatalyst that demonstrated 96.46% and 99.75% removal of catechol and RR195...

The impact of the electrical behavior of oil-brine-rock interfaces on the ionic transport rate in a thin film, hydrodynamic pressure, and low salinity waterflooding effect

    Elsevier B.V  2021
    Abstract
Wettability alteration is the principal low-salinity-effect (LSE) in many oil-brine-rock (OBR) systems. Our recent experimental results have demonstrated that wettability alteration by low salinity is slow. It is expected that the electrical behavior of oil/brine and rock/brine interfaces and the water film geometry control both the transient hydrodynamic pressure, and the time-scale of ionic transport in the film, thus the kinetics and degree of wettability alteration. In this paper, the electro-diffusion process induced by the imposed ionic strength gradient is simulated by solving Poisson-Nernst-Planck equations in a water film bound between two charged surfaces, using a finite...

    Abstract
Oil trapping behavior during the pre-flush stage is critically important to evaluate the effectiveness of matrix acidizing for the oil well stimulation. In this study, the visco-capillary behavior of the two-phase flow in the pore-scale is analyzed to investigate the influence of wetting properties for a natural rock sample. A two-dimensional model, based on Cahn-Hilliard phase-field and Navier-Stokes equations, was established and solved using the finite element method. A stability phase diagram for log capillary number (Ca)-log viscosity ratio (M) was constructed and then compared with the reported experimental works. The maximum and minimum ranges of capillary number and viscosity ratio...

    Abstract
In this study, some new aspects of adsorption of a fluorochemical onto carbonate rocks as a wettability alteration agent to a gas wetting condition with the potential application for reduction of condensate blockage in gas condensate reservoirs are presented. To achieve this, kinetics, equilibrium, and thermodynamic of the adsorption process besides contact angle, imbibition, and characterization tests are investigated. Results of adsorption experiments revealed that kinetics behavior of the utilized fluorochemical–calcite system obeyed the pseudo-second order kinetics model. There was no change in adsorption after about 20 h. Also, the intraparticle diffusion mechanism was not the only rate...
